As a parent you’ve probably encouraged your kids to finish up a meal in order to earn a sweet treat, but if you really want to eat healthier you might want to have your dessert first. New research suggests why dessert might be good for you and, more importantly, why you should eat it before dinner instead of after.

A new study published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Applied found that indulging in dessert before a meal could actually lead to healthier eating overall. The study followed 134 university faculty, staff and graduate students who were eating lunch in the cafeteria. Each participant was offered four different dessert options over four days: a healthy choice (fresh fruit) offered in the dining display before the main and side dish options, an indulgent choice (lemon cheesecake) offered before the main dishes, fruit displayed after the main meal selections or cheesecake after the main meal.

Nearly 70 percent of the participants who chose the cheesecake went on to choose a healthier main dish, like chicken fajitas and a side salad, instead of fried fish and French fries. Only a third of the people who selected the fruit first went on to choose a healthy main dish. Overall the people who selected the cheesecake consumed 250 fewer calories than those who picked the fruit. The results remained similar when the experiment was repeated in an off-campus online setting as well.

“If we choose something healthy first, then this gives us a license to choose something bigger later,” says Martin Reimann, an assistant professor of marketing and cognitive science at the University of Arizona and co-author of the study. “If you turn it around and choose something heavier early on, then this license is already expired.”

In other words, if you want to indulge without sacrificing your health, timing is everything.

If you’re the exhausted parent of a sleepless baby, you’ve likely had your eye on the Tesla of baby sleep aids, a.k.a., the SNOO smart bassinet. If hefty price tag probably pumped the breaks on that idea, but you’re desperate for some shuteye, here’s how to rent a SNOO smart bassinet.

Created by Dr. Harvey Karp, author of the best-selling book The Happiest Baby on the Block, the SNOO smart bassinet promises to soothe your baby to sleep using the same tried and true methods in Karp’s book—minus the need for your aching arms. The bassinet will respond to a baby’s cries with motion and white noise to help them get the back to sleep without the need for parents to get out of bed.

This miracle device also comes at the  rather steep price of nearly $1,300 dollars. While many new parents will do just about anything to get some sleep, not everyone can afford it. Luckily, you can now rent a SNOO smart bassinet so you can catch some zzz’s without sacrificing their college fund in the process!

For just $4.90 per day, your whole family can finally get some much needed sleep when you rent a SNOO. A one-month minimum rental is required, but with free shipping both ways it’s a pretty good deal to help save you from becoming a complete mombie.

For a limited time you can even secure the a special offer of just $3.50 per day for the first month. In other words, skip your daily latte and you’ll earn the sweet reward of sleep instead. The offer is good on orders from now until Jan. 31, but you can order now and delay delivery until you need it, if your future fussy sleeper is still on the way.

Young astronomers and stargazers alike will be treated to a rare sight when they look up at the night sky later this month and spot the first total lunar eclipse of 2019. Dubbed the “Super Blood Wolf Moon,” the name alone is enough to get us excited!

So what does this crazy name actually mean? Between Jan. 20 and Jan. 21, you’ll be treated to a total lunar eclipse of a supermoon (a.k.a., the term for when the Moon is full and super close to Earth at the same time.) The reddish copper hue that covers the Moon during the event is what makes it a blood moon. As for wolves? The Wolf Moon is typically what the first full moon of the year is called.

But why does a lunar eclipse look red? Astronomer Pamela Gay explains to Space.com. “A blood colored moon is created [by] ash from fires and volcanoes, … dust storms and pollution all filtering sunlight as it scatters around our world,” she says. “A grey eclipse is clear skies. Our world can change the appearance of another world, and during an eclipse, the universe lets us see this color play.”

The eclipse will be visible from anywhere in the United States, provided it’s not cloudy where you are. The event will begin with a partial eclipse around 10:30 p.m. Eastern on Jan. 20 and reach full eclipse by 12:12 a.m. Eastern on Jan. 21.

For kids on the West Coast, that means they’ll be able to catch sight of the full eclipse without sacrificing bedtime at 9:12 p.m. Pacific on Jan. 20. Regardless of where you live, this is a rare event worth staying up for as the next total lunar eclipse visible from the United States won’t happen again until May 2021.

You can check out TimeandDate.com for the exact timing of the eclipse in your own neighborhood.

Happy moon gazing!

Traveling with small children can make you feel more like a sherpa on Mount Everest than the jet-setting goddess you were before you became a mom. Between remembering to pack extra diapers, your toddler’s favorite lovey and strollers galore, it can feel overwhelming just getting to your destination. It’s no wonder that rental car agencies and other travel companies offer car seat rentals for families who would rather not lug one more thing through the airport.

With the holiday season approaching, many of us have planned trips to see family or vacations during time off school and work. If you’re traveling by car, then your child’s car seat is likely making the trip as well. But if not, it can be tempting to just rent a car seat at your destination.

But before you give in to this temptation, take note that the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends children use only new car seats due to the risks associated with used car seats. It can be difficult to tell from visual inspection whether a car seat has been involved in a crash or subject to a manufacturer recall.

There is also no guarantee your car seat rental will be in good condition. According to a Consumer Reports study, safety technicians examined car seats available from several large rental car agencies and found many were expired, had broken parts or were missing labels or infant carrier bases. And even if your car seat rental is in working order, there is no way to assure it will not be covered in crumbs, spills or unknown stains.

The bottom line? Car seat safety is not worth sacrificing for convenience.

Your best bet is to purchase an affordable, no-frills car seat at your destination or bring one with you. With devices such as the Baby Trend Snap-N-Go or Go-Go Babyz Travelmate, you can convert your car seat into a stroller. And, if your child is at least 4 years old, you can leave their everyday car seat behind and pack a small, travel-friendly booster seat like the BubbleBum.

Traveling with small children is no small feat, but with a little planning, you can ensure you keep your little ones safe throughout your journey.

A clothing line that looks good, is reasonably priced and helps the environment? Yep, it’s possible. And it’s the new The North Face Renewed Collection! If you’re a fan of the brand, check out their new line and what it might mean for you (and the planet too).

The North Face Renewed Collection isn’t just any ol’ outdoorsy clothing line. It’s the company’s first “refurbished” product collection. You’ve probably heard the term “refurbished” at some point in your shopping history. But it isn’t likely that the word is applied to clothing.

Refurbished products are abundant in the electronics and appliance worlds. When you walk into most big box electronics/appliance retailers, you can typically find a refurbished shelf, rack or stack. These are items that have been returned or used briefly in some way (such as floor models). Even though they’ve seen use, most companies carefully inspect, repair and warrant these items.

The same thinking behind buying a refurbished laptop goes for buying a refurbished The North Face jacket. Kind of. These are all items that have been returned or were defective/damaged. Instead of adding to the U.S.’s landfills, The North Face has decided to repurpose and renew these items.

According to Director of Sustainability at The North Face, James Rogers, “As we address the impacts of our products over their entire lifecycle, recommerce is an important next step in opening new markets and minimizing our impact on the planet. We are furthering our sustainability goals without sacrificing durability or technical standards. Ultimately, as we work to scale Renewed, we will be proving a larger, circular model for the industry.”

So what can you expect from the Renewed line and where can you get it? Currently, The North Face Renewed features popular products such as the Denali jacket, the Summit Series and other well-loved outdoorsy items (including outerwear, hoodies and more).  Right now the products are only available online at thenorthfacerenewed.com.

Are you ready to get just a little bit friendlier with your home planet? That’s right. Now there’s a new way to be eco-friendly. The Safety 1st RIVA Travel System is a stroller made out of recycled car seats. Exclusively sold at select Walmart stores, and on Walmart.com, this is a game-changer when it comes to infant safety, convenience and going green.

Safety 1st, part of Dorel Juvenile, is on a mission. Okay, okay, so obviously Safety 1st into safety first. But along with your kiddo’s safety, this company wants to help out the planet. The new design is the result of years of careful planning—and an effort to reduce landfill waste. Not only is the RIVA Travel System made with recycled components that include recycled Safety 1st car seats, but it’s also made at the company’s Columbus, Indiana zero-landfill factory.

Oh, and don’t worry about sacrificing ease-of-use, or anything else for that matter, just because this is an Earth-friendly product. The travel system includes a lightweight high-impact stroller frame (made from recycled materials), machine-washable fabrics, an American-made onBoard 35 FLX car seat for children weighing 4 to 35 pounds, a storage basket, a compact auto-lock closure that stands when folded and parent cup holders/cell phone holders.

So if you’re wondering where old Safety 1st car seats go, here’s one pretty awesome answer!

The Best Umbrella Strollers for Travel

I don’t think anyone ever wins the mommy wars. The issue of whether a woman should continue to work after having children or become a stay-at-home mother (hereafter”SAHM”), has always been hotly debated and either position seems to carry with it a host of value judgments. Even before I was blessed with two wild and vivacious sons, I heard the shots being fired back and forth on television, radio, movies and books as women in my circle and in public life “debated,” (if one can call the sniping a debate) the right answers for how to optimally parent.

SAHM advocates are quick to point out the unbelievable selfishness of mothers who would place their small, defenseless, children in institutions to be raised by strangers, rather than sacrificing their ambitions for the good of the family. On the other side, working mothers routinely lambaste SAHM’s who chose to leave their burgeoning careers, saying they are throwing away years of advanced education and financial independence in order to play patty cake and coordinate carpools. “Why what if she and the husband divorce, then she’ll be sorry with her shortsighted choice! And forget going back into her chosen field, that door is closed!”

At a core level, the path a woman chooses is her own call. Sort of. It is also a choice likely made by doing some careful cost-benefit analysis while facing her own economic realities – the mommy wars often forget that actually few women even get to choose a side – their circumstances do.

As you can probably guess, I’m working outside the home now despite the very real pangs of guilt felt putting my (then) little babies in the care of other adults. However, my emotions aside, I logically understand that my children are better served learning the curriculum with their peers in a structured classroom environment, rather than staying home with me all day bouncing from one random activity to the next. I have witnessed my oldest in class, without him knowing, and he is much better behaved and far more focused than he is at home doing the same type of project with me.

With that said, I do not want to disparage the mothers who choose to stay at home. I take issue with those on either side who self-righteously place blame and condemnation on a woman who is simply doing what feels right for her and her family. How she defines that and lives with that day in and day out is her burden to bear, and an unkind, and (probably jealous) condemner is not going to change her mind about her current situation. Rather, it will only cause a greater divide between two sides that should be working together and excited that both options are in fact available. It seems strange that this topic is still relevant. I feel as if it has been talk-showed to death, however just today I was reminded through a friend’s indecision on social media and the responses that followed, that it still continues, and that women have not resigned themselves to living and letting live. Perhaps, it is because we are all dealing with our own form of guilt. There is no genuine winner.

The working moms feel like they are not being present enough during their children’s formative years, and the SAHM’s feel as though they have sacrificed everything and will be left a hollow vessel with nothing to offer once everyone is old enough to take care of themselves. The truth is that when we place our value in people and things outside of ourselves, we will never be happy. That holds true for careers and/or children. Happiness, as we all know, is an inside job. So make the choice that is right for you, and feel confident in that decision. After all, we are the ones that have to live with it, no one else.
