Slapjacks, flapjacks, pancakes or hotcakes—whatever you call them, they’re high on everyone’s favorite foods list. And there’s no better time than the start of the school year and the beginning of fall to reward your kiddos with a stack of them on a Saturday morning. Here are Atlanta’s best spots to get a steaming, buttery, syrupy plate of goodness.
Pancake Social in Ponce City Market offers lemon and ricotta pancakes, apple cinnamon pancakes, and banana and oat cakes, but while we like these all, the original buttermilk pancakes take the, well, cake.
That's not the only thing on the menu you're going to want to stuff in your mouth at this family-owned restaurant on the Square, but it's definitely where you need to start.
The Silver Skillet has made 14th Street its home since 1956, and not too much has changed about this classic Atlanta diner since then—especially not the quality of their old fashioned pancakes. Choose your toppings of nuts, whipped cream, raisins, or bananas and keep it classic.
The tiny Crooked Tree Cafe doesn't mess around. They serve delicious pancakes with a side of protein, but you'll realize you've been missing these two things your entire life once you taste the ones they make.
Java Jive is a Virginia-Highlands staple offering mouthwatering pancakes (topped with fresh fruit), plus a seasonally-rotating selection of mini pies that make a whole lot of sense (trust us) for breakfast. And if you're there on a day they offer the avocado scramble, do yourself a solid and go for it.
Buttermilk Kitchen is the kind of place where people don't mind waiting for an hour just for a chance to belly up to a robust brunch menu. Luckily for us parents, our kiddos are early risers, and we can usually beat the crowd by heading out before the rest of the city wakes up. For a dose of deliciousness, get their fried chicken on a buttermilk pancake, topped with maple syrup and powdered sugar. Or, go classic buttermilk with your option of caramelized bananas, whipped cream, or blueberry preserves.
Eat like a hungry soldier in 57th Fighter Group Restaurant, a WWII-themed aviation restaurant right next to the airport runway. 57th Fighter Group offers a fine dining feel in a casual, friendly venue. Their Grand Sunday Champagne Brunch is a buffet-style menu. Eat your heart out through short and tall stacks of pancakes, not to mention their selection of made-to-order bananas foster, omelets, Belgian waffles, smoked salmon, soups, honey thyme chicken, fish, beef, salads, an ice cream sundae station, and more.
O.K. Cafe is old-school. Their food is rich, their plates are hot, and their pancakes are bigger than your face. If you're feeling fancy, you can get blueberry or strawberry stacks, and if you're feeling really healthy, you can get a blueberry, banana, and apple breakfast shake to wash it all down.

From the character meet & greet with your kids’ favorite Nick characters (Sponge Bob, of course, Paw Patrol, Dora and Boots, Shimmer and Shine and many more) to Aqua Nick, the six-acre waterpark with every thrill you can envision and the excellent food found throughout the resort, there’s plenty of fun for families to be had. We had a chance to explore the resort, so keep scrolling to get the details.
The Hotel
Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts Riviera Maya
With its white modern design and iconic Nickelodeon accents, it’s hard to miss this 280-room resort hotel. From the main lobby, you'll take a short shuttle ride down to the oceanfront, and once you’ve been shown to your suite, you’ll have time to enjoy the swim-up pools (every room has one), the patio that offers stunning views of the Mexican Caribbean Sea, and the easy access to the restaurants on the lower level of the property. Nickelodeon-inspired colors and Nick characters adorn the walls and pillows, and there are two bathrooms, which is ideal for families. The hotel also provides items that’ll make traveling with kids easier: strollers, cribs, changing tables, monitors, bottle warmers and even kid-sized bathrobes.
There are three signature rooftop suites. Each one has an oceanfront terrace, private butler service, separate bathrooms with full bathrooms and full dining and living rooms. When you book one of the themed suites, you’ll get several extra perks—two massages, a private character meets & greet, a character dining experience at Nickelodeon Place and more. The crown jewel is Pineapple Suite because, in addition to all these amenities, there’s an interactive pineapple on the terrace, complete with a magic conch shell!
Aqua Nick at Nick Place
Gabby Cullen
Located at Nickelodeon Place, this sprawling six-acre waterpark not only has six thrilling water slides in the Soak Summit main tower but four more slides in Paw Patrol Adventure Bay that are perfect for pint-size visitors. It’s hard not to want to explore the activity pool, which has a wave pool, a climbing wall and a water activity ropes course. Aqua Nick also has two lazy rivers—one is a classic float, and the other is fast-paced with plenty of waves.
Snag a bite at Nick Bistro if you feel like hitting the buffet. You'll find an ample selection of food from freshly-made tacos to salad and kid-friendly offerings like pasta and chicken nuggets. Be sure to visit the soft ice cream station before heading back into the waterpark. There are also several Aqua Bite food stations in the park serving up pizzas, hamburgers, hot dogs and poke bowls.
The Entertainment
Gabby Cullen
From the Meet & Greets to Team Nick performances, there’s never a dull moment at the resort! Getting a picture opp with your kids' fave Nick character is as easy as checking the daily schedule on the Karisma Hotel app. The Snick Lounge, located in the main Lobby, has exciting entertainment every night in addition to arcade games, TVs playing Nick shows and a pool table. The shows range from magic shows and glow parties to live music and other family-friendly fun.
The Character Pajama Jam is especially fun. You’ll get incredible meal options like waffles, parfaits, avocado and smoked salmon toast, smoothies, hash browns, bacon and fresh fruit. Team Nick is on hand with singing and dancing and they’ll bring iconic faces like Dora, Boots, Spong Bob, Shimmer and Shine and many more. Kids get a goodie bag with items they can use to participate in the entertainment.
Kids can also take a cooking class from one of the head chefs. The Yacht Club holds sessions twice a week, and kids can learn to make everything from smoothies to waffles.
The Kids’ Club at Nick Place isn’t open yet, but guests have access to the club at the resort’s sister property next door until it is. You'll also find the Nickelodeon Shop at Nick Place, so be sure to take time to browse through the impressive selection of Nickelodeon souvenirs.

Cost: Peaches start at $42 a box; jams are $33 for a set of three. Deliveries run early June through late July.
Want fresh fruit—or a huge box of nutritious snacks—delivered to your door every week? The Fruit guys will send you generous-sized boxes of fruit and/or healthy snacks to your door on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly basis. Fruit boxes contain a cornucopia of different seasonal fruits, and snack boxes have things like Chocolate Blonde Coconut Energy Bars or Spinach & Kale Fruit & Veggie Leather.
Cost: Fruit boxes start at $26; snack boxes start at $32
If you live in the Tri-State area, Pennsylvania or Delaware, this grocery delivery service offers much of what you'd find at a traditional grocery store, including seafood, dairy, deli & cheese, prepared foods, bakery items, frozen food, household essentials (like pet food and cleaning supplies), and beer and wine. There are also ready-to-eat meal kits for those days when cooking and cleaning just aren't on your to-do list.
Go to the traditional grocery store from the comfort of your computer. Basically: Anything you can get at your neighborhood grocery store is available online as well. When you enter your zip code, the site redirects you to whichever Albertsons Company grocery chain is in your area, including Safeway, Acme, Vons, Haggen, Albertsons, Star Market, Tom Thumb and more.
Cost: $9.95/delivery fee on orders over $150; $12.95/delivery fee on orders under $150. (Note: These fees can vary and/or be waived if you use certain coupons and/or purchase specific items).
If you don't mind paying an $8.95 membership fee, Shipt offers next-day and same-day (sometimes) delivery from local drug and grocery stores including CVS, Target, Smart & Final, Gelsons and Petco—which means you can get everything from household essentials and hair care to children's toys and pet food.
Cost: $8.95 monthly membership fee plus delivery fees (orders over $35 are delivered free, orders under $35 come with a charge of around $7)
If you can score a delivery slot and you don't mind the added fees, Instacart is the next best thing to going to the grocery store yourself. It sends a personal shopper to gather your groceries at stores including Whole Foods, Costco and Smart & Final. The good news is that Instacart is available all over the country; the bad news is that it's also one of the most popular grocery delivery services—which means getting a shopper to do your bidding takes patience. While you may place your order today, the next available delivery slot may not be until a few days from now (if any slots are available at all). Our tip? Try placing your order late at night; it seems to up your chances.
Cost: $7.99 for one-hour delivery slots/$5.99 for two-hour delivery slots. Tip strongly encouraged.

If you want an outdoor patio... … I Love Sushi is the place for your crew. They’ve got a great patio with a view and clear partitions, so you can feel safe while you eat. The patio is first come, first serve, and off hours are your best bet for getting a seat, especially when wiggle worms are involved. Shared plates are how they roll here, and we agree they make a great option for family style dining. Parents will also dig the variety of veggie rolls available. Always an easy and healthy option for kids!
