11 Cities That You HAVE to Visit in the Winter

When the snow starts falling, adults see shovels and plows, but kids see snowballs and sledding. Take a timeout this winter and join the kids in one of these snow activities. Whether you let your inner child out to play or just watch the kids do their thing, these are the seven best snow activities to do this winter (and the best locations to do them!)

Sledding

Emily Williams

Who doesn’t love gliding over the snow on a sled or saucer? Lying flat on their stomachs, using rope to steer and hands to stop, every kid gets a thrill from sledding. And DC has no shortage of hills to rush down. One of the city's best hills is off-the-beaten path Battery Kemble Park. This hidden gem is in a residential area which keeps it tucked away from tourists and often sparsely populated – perfect for this year!

Where: Battery Kemble Park
3035 Chain Bridge Rd NW
Washington, DC 20016
202-895-6070
Online: nps.gov

Snowtubing

If regular sledding feels a bit tame to you and your bunch, snowtubing might be just what you want. The higher speed combined with the lack of control offers an adventure that will get the adrenaline pumping. You can ride alone or in tandem, this activity is usually best for kids 5 & up. You don’t have to go far to have fun, either; Liberty Mountain Resort is a perfect day trip from DC. Due to social distancing, be sure you make reservations and are prepared for a cashless pay experience.

Where: Liberty Mountain Resort

Snowfort Building

popofatticus via Flickr

Building a snowfort is a fun way to spend a snowy day  and, bonus!, you can use it as protection during an epic snow ball battles. Pick up this $10 brick maker  (it also works at the beach!) to help littles build a solid foundation. Want to get super fancy? See if you can add ramparts, turrets, and cubbyholes for extra fun. The best place to build with snow? Your own backyard! Let the kids do their thing while you keep hot cocoa warm on the stove and watch the merry snow-making adventures from your own patio (or through the windows!).

Snowshoeing

donwhite84 via Pixabay

The end of summer doesn’t mean the end of hiking if you enjoy snowshoeing. Snowshoeing gives hiking a whole different feel as you enjoy the shushed quiet of winter… well, as shushed as things get with kids. Snowshoeing is a great whole-family winter activity because if you can walk, you can snowshoe! The best place for snowshoeing is Canaan Valley with 35 kilometers of marked and ungroomed natural snow trails. And if you finish all those trails, you can head to the nearby White Grass Ski Touring Center for another 60 kilometers.

Where: Canaan Valley
230 Main Lodge Rd.
Davis, West Virginia 26260

Make a Snowperson

bairli1 via Pixabay

Get creative by building a snowman or snowwoman. Let everyone build their own and decorate them complete with carrot noses, coal eyes, and scarves or bowties around their wintry necks. Use what you have around the house, or get a snowman kit here. Have a fam-friendly contest to decide who built the best snowperson (with prizes for everyone, of course!). Or make it a neighborhood-wide competition and let everyone on your block in on the fun. Want to up the stakes? Award the winner this snowman trophy ($24.99)!

Where: Your own front yard

Skiing

tycza1 via flickr

Skiing makes a great family activity and comes with built-in social distancing and masks! Whether you’re first-timers or experts, skiing offers a trail for everyone, ensuring that no one feels left out of the fun. And there’s no shortage of ski resorts nearby. Head to Winterplace Ski Resort for some of the best trails near DC. As an added bonus, if your littles get bored with skiing, they can also go snowtubing – including Kiddie Park for the younger kids!

Where: Winterplace Ski Resort
100 Old Flat Top Mt. Rd.
Ghent, WV 25843
1-800-607-SNOW
Online: winterplace.com

Create a Snowy Sensory Box

Sensory boxes are a great way to let your kids explore things with their hands, and a snowy sensory box lets you bring the outdoors inside. For a kiddo who isn’t a big fan of being cold or for entertaining older kids while littler ones nap, a sensory box lets them have the fun of snow days while staying toasty inside. Add a variety of little toys (think polar bears and penguins), decorative crystals, and other things that can change or contrast with the texture and temperature of the snow. It can get a little messy, so be sure to have some bath mats or towels on hand.

18 Cozy Winter Boots for Kids

Who doesn’t love free movies? Check out these sources to find free movies for kids online that the whole family can enjoy together

The internet is full of entertainment choices, and you know that there’s good stuff to watch (like these free movies on YouTube) out there, but to find it, you have to wade through a bunch of muck. Who has the time? Lucky for you, we’ve already done the research. We looked for ethical sources (nothing has been pirated), and sites that are easy to use and offer a wide variety of films and found six of the best places to find free movies for kids online. All that’s left is to make the popcorn!

Hoopla

Hoopla

Hoopla is a free service offered through many local libraries. Through Hoopla, you can stream up to 15 videos per month with no wait times. Videos do expire 72 hours after you first choose one, but you can rent it again and pick up right where you left off. There are no late fines either. There are lots of movies to choose from for both kids and families alike.

Kanopy Kids

Kanopy Kids

Another free service offered through your local library is Kanopy Kids, which presents programming that is educational, enriching, and entertaining. They offer movies and short films that are engaging for both kids and their parents. The selection of films in the catalog encourages social and emotional development, promotes respect for community diversity, and inspires creativity.

YouTube Movies

YouTube

You already know YouTube as the site you go to when you need a break but really should be working. Did you know that in addition to silly cat videos, they offer a whole array of movies to watch, with a good chunk of them for free? Of course, there’s a catch: Most of the free movies on YouTube are ad-supported—meaning the cost is watching a few commercials before the movie starts. It’s a little tricky to navigate and be sure that you are the one doing the searching, as every free movie they offer (from family-friendly to not-so-much) is listed in one area.

The Roku Channel

The Roku Channel
The Roku Channel

While you may be debating about getting a Roku for your TV, you don’t actually need a special device to take advantage of the free offerings found on The Roku Channel. Unlike many of the other free movie choices, you’ll find a lot more recent films here and a lot more offerings for everyone in the family including lots of children’s TV shows for kids from age 1 on up.

Popcornflix

Popcornflix

While Popcornflix says that they have “compelling documentaries, foreign films, unique original web series, and a place that showcases the brightest filmmakers of tomorrow,” we found their offerings to be a little lackluster overall. Still, free is free, and there are still a few good flicks here.

Tubi

Tubi

Tubi is another service that is on par with Popcornflix, but there are still a few diamonds in the rough to be found here as well.

The ski week break from school will be here before you know it, so we’ve rounded-up seven nearby winter getaways where you can have snowy adventures with your family. Get ready to head to snow-covered mountains for plenty of family-friendly winter activities from skiing and snowboarding to tubing and snow play! Mammoth Mountain

Mammoth Mountain Ski Area

Hit the slopes to snowboard and ski at the 3,500 acres of Mammoth Mountain. You can tube it at Woolly's Tube Park, or even ride a snowmobile. A good family stay-over is The Village Lodge, where you can walk to the gondola and cook meals in a full kitchen. Your crew will be cozy in a two-bedroom condo which sleeps six. After a day of snow fun, warm up at the heated pool and five hot tubs. Another option is the Mammoth Creek Inn, although you'll need to shuttle to the slopes. Here you'll get a complimentary breakfast and the rooms can sleep six. Notably, there's a spa, steam room, sauna, gym and jacuzzi. Plus, the fam can play board games by the cozy lobby fire.

Big Bear Mountain Resort

Big Bear Mountain Resort

Big Bear Mountain is a winter wonderland full of activities and sports for your whole family. Whether your crew is full of beginners or advanced snow sports athletes, you'll find something for everyone. For example, beginning pint-sized shredders can take snowboard lessons (from four years old and up!) designed to make learning fun. On the other hand, more avid skiers and snowboarders can take a half or full day lesson at either Bear Mountain or Snow Summit.

Big Bear has a new Visitor's Center that's a great resource for families. Visit the permanent kiosk in the visitor center, where a Big Bear Mountain Resort representative is available daily to assist with lift ticket purchases and equipment fittings making for a seamless check-in process once you hit the slopes.

Also new and noteworthy: Big Bear Mountain Resort's Bear Mountain has expanded its sun deck from 13,000 sq. ft. to 26,000 sq. ft., creating additional space for outdoor seating, dining, special events/concerts and more.

Additionally, a perfect addition of off mountain activities is the new 2-story ropes course at Big Bear Snow Play: The 2-level ropes course, which opened in August, includes an 80-foot zip line and a number of challenges to reward and excite young and old alike. State-of-the-art safety harnesses will keep guests secure as they traverse the course, the first and only one of its kind in  Big Bear.

Don't miss a visit to the Bear Mountain Adventure Academy. It makes it easy on families by having kids' ski rentals, lift tickets and sports school registration in one spot. Further, there are fun things to do while waiting like coloring and a Burton snowboard practice game. Even more, you'll find food and drink including artisan pizzas, a full-service coffee bar and spirits. Also, you'll appreciate the parent viewing area where you can watch your half-pint learn to ski or snowboard.

On the other hand, if your snow angels want to skip the lift lines and go tubing, slide over to the Grizzly Ridge Tube Park at Snow Summit or Big Bear Snow Play (both with Magic Carpet conveyor belts) for easy downhill fun.

Another flurry of activities can be found at the Alpine Slide at Magic Mountain. First, grab your little one and bobsled together down the 1/4 mile long mountain track. Second, ride the Soaring Eagle where you fly through the sky at up to 28 mph! Then, you can tube down the Alpine Slide and play in the snow. Finally, you can play miniature golf and try the go-karts. Your crew will have a blast!

Plus, two good places to stay as a family are The Lodge at Big Bear Lake with free Wi-Fi and a walk to the village or Big Bear Frontier where we recommend the cabins that sleep up to 12––and furry friends are welcome too.

Snow Drift Tubing Park

Minh-An C.

If you and the crew just want to tube for the day, this is your spot. SoCal's largest and oldest tubing park, you can have 'snow' much fun! It's a no-frills tube park with stairs to get to the top of the slopes. The cost is $20 per person, but kids 36 inches and under are free (with paying adult). Also, good to note that parking is ten dollars.

Travel time: About two and a half hours from San Diego.

Snow Valley

Snow Valley

This smaller mountain is great for snow angels at the beginner or intermediate level. It's also less crowded than big brother mountain (Big Bear) which is 30 minutes further away. For the little ones, there's the Children's Learning Center with full and half-day classes where snow bunnies can learn to ski or snowboard (ages 4-12). Moreover, there's a snow play area where kiddos can sled for a fee. Another perk: kids six and under ski free (with a paid adult). You can do this trip up and back on the same day. However, if you decide to stay overnight, we recommend the Lake Arrowhead Resort and Spa, with a fitness room and restaurant. (It's about a 30-minute drive).

10 Family Day Trips to Satisfy Your Wanderlust

Whip it Up! Super Spots for Hot Chocolate in San Diego

There’s nothing like looking out the window before school to see a few inches of snow covering the ground. The snow day has always been a time honored tradition, but with the adoption of virtual classrooms and e-learning, these magical days are under threat with the real possibility of extinction. Campbell’s is looking to save the snow day.

With parents at their wits end when it comes to virtual learning, kids and parents need a day dedicated to leaving their computer screens and getting outside to play in the snow. Through an online pledge on SavetheSnowDay.com, Campbell’s called on families who believe hills were made to be sled down, cold days call for hot soup and in shutting screens off, and putting snow pants on, to pledge their support to save a cherished winter tradition. The pledge has received over 15K+ signatures to date!

Starting Jan. 12, those who sign the pledge on SavetheSnowDay.com will be entered to win one of 1,000 free limited-edition snow day activity kits. Winners will be drawn at random throughout the month of January.

Campbell's Snow Day Kit

Each kit includes:

  • A snowman making kit featuring a large carrot, coal and oversized buttons
  • A signature red and white hat and scarf
  • Goldenrod mittens
  • Limited-edition Campbell’s Chicken Noodle Soup snowman cans
  • Save the Snow Day window cling to show your support
  • Personalized note from their soon-to-be snowbuddy
  • Kits will be mailed to pledge signers in January during the height of snow season.

Campbell’s believes in the importance of the snow day and is hoping this pledge will remind kids at heart of their own magical memories.

Eat Chinese

Mimi O'Connor

Eating Chinese food on Christmas Day has been a tradition for decades. We think it's always a good time for dim sum; the famous Nom Wah Tea Parlor is pictured here, and is one of our favorite places to get dim sum with kids in New York City. But of course there are many other options for Chinese food in New York City, from Chinatown in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens, to your favorite neighborhood spot.

Catch a Movie

Krists Luhaers via Unsplash

Another old standby for a reason: Christmas Day is an awesome day to see a movie! (It's less crowded, it's cozy, etc.) Big titles this season? Frozen II and Star Wars IX: The Rise of Skywalker are the hot tickets for kids. NYC has all kinds of options when it comes to kid-friendly movie theaters, as well as many where you can eat a full meal while you watch! Check out our favorites here!
