When I was pregnant with my second, my OB accidentally spilled the baby beans to my almost-three-year-old. I was lying on the exam table, holding the measuring tape at the top of my oversized belly when it happened. My doctor casually leaned over and asked my son if he was excited about becoming a big brother.

My toddler cycled through all the feels—excitement, confusion, shock—before shooting me a look that let me know it was time to let him in on the secret. While we weren’t necessarily keeping the news from my firstborn, my husband and I weren’t exactly advertising it either. Turns out we had already done a few things that clinical psychologist Maureen Turner agreed were good first steps.

As she explains, “kids thrive on connection and consistency,” and any time a baby enters a family this gets uprooted in parents’ lives. By trying to keep things as consistent as possible and carving out special time for your sibling-to-be, you can help them through this major life change. Here are Maureen’s top tips to prepare your toddler for a new baby.

Don’t attempt any big transitions around the time of baby’s arrival

Maureen suggests not making any major transitions right before or after the baby’s arrival. So if your toddler is taking up prime crib real estate (as ours was), make sure to move them to a different bed well before the baby needs the crib (as we did). It’s also not a great time to start potty training, retire a comfort paci or transition from sippies to big kid cups. Try to maintain a consistent environment and routine as much as possible during this time.

Try to keep routines as consistent as possible

Part of that overall consistency is figuring out what part of your family’s daily routine you can maintain once the baby arrives. For me, it was naptime. Maybe the bath time/storytime/bedtime trifecta is a stalwart in your house. Or maybe it’s gathering for family dinner. Whatever it is, building in predictability is key to helping toddlers with this exciting change, according to Maureen.

Help foster a connection with the new baby

In addition to moving our son into his big kid bed, we also added one of my favorites—The Berenstain Bears: New Baby—to our nighttime reading in anticipation of the baby’s arrival.

Maureen says that fostering connections between soon-to-be sibs and a new baby should be a cornerstone of adding to your fam. Take, for example, reading the Berenstain Bears book. Talking with my son about how he would soon be a big brother and exploring his questions and thoughts was a great way for him to connect with his soon-to-arrive sister and me. Signing kids up for a siblings class, having them make something special for the baby, like a painting or a story, or even picking out a special gift to give the baby are all ways that parents can help their older kids connect with the latest addition.

Remember that your toddler may still act out

It’s hard to anticipate all the changes that come with welcoming a baby, but come they will. And when it comes to challenging toddler behavior, you count on that too. Maureen reminds parents to “interpret behavior changes as communication.” Young kids don’t have the emotional vocabulary to express complicated feelings or needs. It’s one of the reasons carving out special time to connect with them daily once the baby arrives is important.

In the end, that unexpected nudge from my OB forced my hand in a good way. While things weren’t warm-knife-through-butter smooth when the baby arrived (but then again what part of parenting is?), we made it to the other side as a family of four… and eventually five.

These are some of the must-have Pride Month 2023 goodies we’re loving this year

It’s (somehow) already June. Yeah, we have no idea how that happened so fast, either. But it did. And that means Pride Month 2023 is here. The time when the LGBTQIA+ community and its allies come together to honor the progress made in the fight for equality and to recognize the major work that still lies ahead. Of course, there are vibrant parades and festivities. But Pride Month is also an important platform to amplify the voices and stories of queer individuals, fostering a sense of inclusivity and acceptance. It’s also the perfect time to talk to our kiddos about all the love and different identities that make the people we’re surrounded by so fantastically diverse.

In recent years, an increasing number of companies have stepped up to support the LGBTQIA+ community by launching a wide array of Pride products and we’re so here for them. These colorful and empowering items not only showcase solidarity but also provide a means for individuals to express their identities and spread awareness. From rainbow-inspired goodies to products created by members of the community itself, they all contribute to the ongoing quest for equality, acceptance, and, most importantly, inclusion. Tinybeans is here to support all families, and these are some of the Pride Month 2023 products that will help you and your family do the same, all year long.

Middle school graduation gift ideas? Don’t even get us started. Okay fine, let us share our two cents on this one. The thing with middle school graduation is that it’s a pretty big deal. It’s not high school, but it’s also not elementary school. It’s the transition between childhood and preteen years. So, you want to get a gift that’s not too immature or too grown up. Middle school graduation gift ideas can be tough to come up with, especially when you want to find something that’s both thoughtful and age-appropriate.

There are plenty of classic gift options, but as we remember all too well, their image is ultra-important. So, really, it doesn’t hurt to also keep in mind it truly is the thought and the gift that count with tweens. And that’s totally okay! It’s completely normal and absolutely part of growing up. We rounded up some of our favorite middle school graduation gifts that (since we’re still ultra-cool and with it) we feel pretty confident they’ll love (and love showing off to all their friends!). The transition from middle to high school is a big deal and we’ve got the gifts to commemorate it!

A mom’s TikTok video is going viral after she time lapsed cleaning up after her kids—and her good-for-nothing husband who helped them make all the mess

At this point, there’s just so much research that shows that chores, childcare, and the mental load of running a household fall disproportionately on women in heterosexual relationships, even when both partners work full-time jobs. It’s a well-documented reality, and while some men do step up, the vast majority of them just don’t. One mom’s viral TikTok is a heartbreaking example of being shouldered with being the “default parent” despite having a partner, and we’re only cheering because the mom in the video dumped her useless loser of a husband.

Lynalice Bandy (@5kids5catssomedogstoo on TikTok) shared the powerful time lapse video, which shows her cleaning up her house that has been absolutely wrecked by her five kids and their basically absent dad, who was supposed to be caring for them while she worked six 10-hour days.

♬ SUN GOES DOWN – Andreas Roehrig

After not even a week with her gone, this house (that another fully functional adult also lives in) is cluttered with piles of clothes, trash, and food all over every surface and all the floors. In the time lapse, Bandy painstakingly tidies every room, leaving the house sparkling and spotless at the end.

“I’d like to pretend I’m not the only one who cleans here but as you can see these rooms don’t get much attention when I’m not here,” she wrote in the video’s text overlay. “Every single day I’ve gotten home from work I’ve been met with one disaster to another caused by inattentive parenting.”

She goes on to list some of the messes her soon-to-be ex-husband could have prevented, like shampoo spilled on carpets, nail polish on nugget covers, and a DIY haircut done with kitchen scissors. All of this happened while her husband—the kids’ dad—was in the house and fully capable of engaging with his children, but he was “busy” working on cars instead.

Bandy notes in this video that she has plans to move out of the house, but the housing market in her area is too expensive.

“My soul aches without a place to feel safe and happy,” she writes. Ugh. Our souls ache for her.

In a follow-up video, Bandy reveals that she has moved out (good for her!). But that video shows her back at her ex’s house cleaning it because (surprise!) he still doesn’t bother, and this mom wants any environment her kids spend time in to be clean and safe.

We only hope that Bandy finds peace and happiness, and whoever this absolutely useless man is, that he learns to step up for the sake of his kids.

Who runs the world? These women continue to prove that they do, bump and all

Rihanna just so happened to announce that she was pregnant with her second child while on the job. Before her Super Bowl half-time show performance was even off TV screens around the nation, social media feeds erupted in shock and awe. Whenever a woman does an impressive thing while pregnant, it seems to make international news. But the truth is, soon-to-be mothers—from star athletes to powerful CEOs—have long been dominating their fields, bump included.

1. Rihanna

Rihanna’s performance during the Super Bowl LVII half-time show, a nonstop 14-minute medley of her greatest hits, should have been impressive enough, considering it was less than a year since she gave birth to her first child. But in true iconic fashion, she used the moment—without a single costume change and while suspended on a glass platform in the middle of the arena, no less—to reveal to millions that she’s pregnant again.

2. Amber Miller

A 27-year-old Illinois woman gave birth mere hours after completing the 2011 Chicago Marathon. She said her doctor gave her permission to complete the race, as long as she walked at times, which she did. Even still, she beat her husband’s time in the race and completed it in just 6.5 hours.

3. Amal Clooney

The prominent human rights lawyer went to the United Nations on International Women’s Day in 2017 to encourage the organization to investigate allegations of genocide against ISIS, but publications at the time wrote about how “George Clooney’s wife” was there “showing off her baby bump.” Yes, she was pregnant at the time, but the social media buzz led to a global conversation on how societies view women even as they are doing incredibly important work.

4. Gal Gadot

In addition to battling supervillains on the set of Wonder Woman and Justice League, Gal Gadot was also battling morning sickness. The actress and filmmakers, she told Rolling Stone, went to great lengths to hide her pregnancy on-screen and on-set, where she discreetly filmed intense action scenes. “I didn’t want attention,” she said. “The default should be that women get the job done, but there’s a long way to go and a lot of reprogramming that needs to be done to both genders.”

5. Serena Williams

She is considered one of the greatest tennis players of all time, and yet it was still a shock to fans when they discovered—after the fact—that Serena Williams won the 2017 Australian Open, which secured her record-breaking 23rd Grand Slam singles title, while secretly pregnant. She didn’t publicly announce her pregnancy, with daughter Olympia, until several weeks later.

6. Marissa Mayer

When Marissa Mayer was appointed the new CEO of Yahoo in 2012, it was already notable news: female CEOs at public tech companies are incredibly rare, and at 37 years old, she was also one of the youngest. But, just before her first day on the job, she announced that she was six month pregnant. This trailblazing news made her the first-ever pregnant CEO of a Fortune 500 tech company.

7. Keke Palmer

Hosting Saturday Night Live for the first time is stressful enough, but using the monologue to announce your pregnancy? Only Keke Palmer could pull that off so hilariously. The actress “set the record straight” during her SNL debut by revealing her several-months-along baby bump. “It is bad when people on the internet spread rumors about you, but it’s even worse when they’re correct,” she joked.

8. Regan Schreiber

In 2001, Regan Schreiber, who was an all-American swimmer at Penn State in the 1990s, swam the English Channel—which is 30 miles long—while 11 weeks pregnant. She completed the feat in 9 hours and 30 minutes.

9. Kayla Donnelly

The British soldier served in Afghanistan for seven months while unknowingly pregnant in 2010. According to the Daily Mail, she thought she’d been gaining weight from high-calorie army rations. The baby was born just two weeks after Kayla Donnelly returned from service.

10. Alison Hargreaves

The British mountain climber was six months pregnant in 1988 when she climbed the incredibly dangerous north face of the Eiger mountain in the Alps. Her other accomplishments include soloing all the great north faces of the Alps in a single season and for scaling Mount Everest alone without supplementary oxygen or support from a Sherpa team. Although she later died while descending the summit of K2, the second-highest mountain on earth, her son went on to become a record-breaking solo climber as well.

11. Jacinda Ardern

The New Zealand Prime Minister realized she was pregnant just six days before she took office on Oct. 26, 2017, and that was following a political campaign in which she took a firm stance on the double standard women of child-bearing age face when applying for jobs. “It is a women’s decision about when they choose to have children,” she said at the time. “It should not predetermine whether or not they are given a job.” Following the birth of her child, she was the first world leader to take maternity leave, for six weeks, while in office.

12. Aimee Roseborrough

The physical therapist had been rock climbing for 14 years already, so she didn’t think it was a big deal that she kept at the sport, at Joshua Tree National Park, until she was 37 weeks into her first pregnancy and past 34 weeks with her second. “I do kind of get to forget that I’m so huge and, at times, uncomfortable,” she told Good Morning America, noting that her pregnancy hormones aided in her flexibility.

13. Ali Wong

The comedian recorded not one but two hit Netflix standup specials while pregnant, and both were rule-breaking in their own right. In the 2016 taping of Baby Cobra, Ali Wong made previously taboo jokes about pregnancy, miscarriage, and motherhood while seven and a half months pregnant. Then, in 2018, she taped Hard Knock Wife while extremely pregnant, yet she never mentioned her pregnancy in the hour-long performance at all.

14. Alysia Montaño

This Olympian is now known as the “pregnant runner” with good reason. She crossed the finish line of the 800-meter race at the 2014 U.S. Track and Field Championships while 34 weeks pregnant with her first child. Then, she returned in 2017—this time, four months pregnant with her second child—to run the same race.

15. Kerri Walsh Jennings

When Kerri Walsh Jennings won her third Olympic gold in beach volleyball at the London Olympics in 2012, she was also keeping a brand-new secret: after a missed period and feeling “moody and touchy” throughout the games, the athlete realized she was five weeks pregnant with her third child. “When I was throwing my body around fearlessly, and going for gold for our country, I was pregnant,” she told TODAY.

16. Nur Suryana Mohamed Taibi

The Malaysian sports shooter gained international fame during the 2012 London Olympics, in which she competed while eight months pregnant. Although she did not advance beyond the qualification round in the women’s 10-meter air rifle event, she is known as the most pregnant Olympian ever.

17. Beyoncé

Similar to Rihanna, Beyoncé announced her pregnancy on stage, complete with a dramatic mic drop, at the very end of her performance of “Love on Top” at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2011. She didn’t stop there: in 2017, when she was several months pregnant with twins, she sang two songs from her Lemonade album—“Love Drought” and “Sandcastles”—in a stunning performance at the Grammy Awards.

Eagles center Jason Kelce’s wife, Kylie, will be 38 weeks pregnant on the day of the Super Bowl—so she’s bringing two OB-GYNs just in case

For Jason Kelce, the star center for the Philadelphia Eagles, the Super Bowl is going to be a family affair. During a recent episode of the podcast he shares with his brother, New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce, Jason laughed as they described the upcoming “Kelce Bowl,” since he plays for the Eagles, and Travis plays for the Kansas City Chiefs. The two teams are set to square off on Feb. 12.

“Are mom and dad sitting on your sideline? Are they sitting on my sideline?” Jason joked.

Travis replied, “We do have to figure that out because we each get a certain amount of tickets, and I feel like you’re going to have more of a family-oriented thing.”

That’s certainly true—Jason went on to explain that he’s bringing Kylie and her parents, plus their two daughters, 3-year-old Wyatt and 22-month-old Elliotte Ray. But because the couple is currently expecting their third baby, they’ll have a couple of important, special guests in their cheering section.

As Kylie confirmed to PEOPLE magazine, she’ll be bringing, not one but both of her OB-GYNS to the game. “They’re both my OBs on a regular basis, but I didn’t necessarily want one to be by themselves. All hands on deck.”

She went on to say that the discussion over a potential Eagles’ Super Bowl appearance began back in the fall when the team was in the middle of an eight-game winning streak. “They were undefeated then, and we just had a moment of, ‘Hypothetically speaking, the due date lines up very well with a Super Bowl date. If we happen to need to discuss that, would someone be open to coming with me?’ ” Kylie said.

“And of course, they were very understanding of the situation and said, ‘Of course, hypothetically speaking’ that someone would be able to accompany us.” (Who would turn that down, after all?)

The news originally broke when her husband announced their plans during that same podcast episode mentioned above.

“Kylie’s bringing her OB because she’s going to be 38 weeks pregnant at the game,” Jason said.

Travis about summed it up when he replied, “Dude. Dude!”

But hey, as this soon-to-be dad of three already knows, sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do.

“That could be a super Kelce Bowl. If she has a baby in the stadium, it’s officially scripted,” Jason joked

The Kelce family is clearly ready. Recently, Jason shared a hilarious video of Wyatt singing the “Fly Eagles, Fly” fight song from her crib.

“Apparently Wyatt is pretty pumped about the Eagles win last night too,” he wrote in the caption. “Woke up to her singing the entire fight song this morning in her crib.”

An expecting father asked Twitter for advice about childbirth, and the result was a thread that’s absolutely packed with moms’ wisdom

When an expecting dad is getting ready for the arrival of his baby (especially if it’s his first one), he likely has a whole lot of questions. One expecting dad decided to crowdsource one of his biggest questions, taking to Twitter to ask for advice on what dads can do to make childbirth easier on their partners. The resulting thread is full of moms who absolutely delivered.

“A big question for anyone who has given birth: What is one thing that your partner did, said or brought to the hospital that really helped you through your birth experience?” Dave Whiteside, a soon-to-be dad from Ontario, Canada, wrote on Twitter. “Expecting dad hoping to support his wife in the best ways possible here ready to take notes.”

It didn’t take long for moms to start filling the thread with their best advice. And, as anyone who has given birth will recognize, these nuggets of wisdom are exactly what Whiteside needs to know going into his first baby’s birth.

There’s this great advice about showering a new mom with attention and praise, both during the birth and after it.

And this advice about keeping family up-to-date, while also creating a record of everyone’s love and support.

The advice kept pouring in, letting Whiteside know everything from what to bring to the hospital to how to work with hospital staff to make sure his wife got the best possible care—including being her advocate with the doctors and nurses, something that came up several times.

But one of the best moments came when the Twitter thread was shared on Instagram, where even more people weighed in—including Kelly Ripa.

“Do you mind if i eat?” And “I’m going to the batting cages since you’re gonna be here a while,” she wrote. Clearly, Mark Consuelos could have used this thread.

Later, Whiteside followed up to thank all the moms of Twitter for their advice, and explain a little more why he and his wife chose to crowdsource their childbirth recommendations.

“We have never been in this situation before and she has never given birth, so we’re taking shots in the dark at what would work best for her,” he wrote. “We don’t know what we don’t know. So why not stand on the shoulders of giants?”

And good thing he did, because now this advice is out there for everyone to use.
