The first three flicks follow the adventures of Carmen and Juni and their retired spy parents, Gregorio and Ingrid, as they save the world time and again. The fourth flick introduces us to a new family, but don’t worry: they’re just as fun as the Cortez kids.

$19 BUY NOW

New Yorker cover artist Bob Staake’s latest creation is possibly one of the most visually appealing and downright stunning books of 2022. As you might expect from the title, the book takes children on a walk along a path that leads through many landscapes. Some are calming, while others are a little scary (like a dark, chilly cave). The message rings clear: at some point you must choose your own path: “When it splits in two, you will have to decide what to do next—and you'll create a path that's unique to you” It’s like Robert Frost’s “The Road Not Taken” meets Dr. Suess’s Oh, the Places You Will Go! but with an entirely unique landscape of words and beautiful art that together form the author’s own unique voice. PS: The book has a bonus illustration inside the jacket that can be put up like a poster. Ages: 4-8

Alexander von Humboldt: Explorer, Naturalist & Environmental Pioneer

$18 BUY NOW

One of the most amazing environmental pioneers you (and your kids) have never heard of, Alexander von Humboldt is considered to be the father of modern ecology. According to Novgorodoff, he was “the only well-known nineteenth-century scientist to argue, throughout his career, that race was not a biological category,” and declared that “all are alike designed for freedom.” Available Feb. 22, 2022; you can preorder it now. The Woman Who Split the Atom: The Life of Lise Meitner

$20 BUY NOW

From author-illustrator Marissa Moss, this illustrated chapter book details the mostly forgotten story of Lise Meitner, the scientist who discovered nuclear fission. Never heard of her? When you read her remarkable story, you'll wonder why. A female Jewish physicist in Berlin during the early 20th century, Meitner had already faced a fair share of sexism as a scientist. Still, when Hitler came to power, it wasn't just sexism: now, she was facing life-threatening anti-Semitism. Meitner's discovery of splitting the atom would change the course of history forever, spurning the race to build the first nuclear bomb. Still, while her male lab partner was awarded a Nobel Prize for the discovery, she was given no credit. Meitner was deeply disturbed that her discovery was being used to build nuclear weapons and spent her later years as an advocate for pacifism. Moss' comic-like illustrations throughout will help children of any age grasp the magnitude of her contribution. Still, the recommendation for this book remains 10 and up due to the heavy subject matter. Ages: 10-14.

Everything you need to know about pizza in Chicago, from the best deep dish to the most popular spots for families

When it comes to pizza in Chicago, most people instantly think of deep dish, also known as pan pizza . . . and also known as Chicago style. And although Chicago is known for this style of pie, there are of course other regional styles, such as New York, Detroit, Neapolitan, and Quad City that have found a home here as well.

With so many pizza joints to choose from, one pizzeria tends to try to outdo the other in trying to attract locals. From arcades to balloon artists, we’ve also included all the best spots for family fun across the city.

Chicago Deep Dish Pizza Places You Must Try

For those unfamiliar, deep dish pizza is baked in a round steel pan. The bottom and sides of the pan are oiled (which will result in a crisp crust), and then the dough is pressed out along the sides of the pan. It is baked at very high temperatures, which is why the cheese is set at the bottom of the pie, followed by a thick layer of toppings, and then the sauce. It is typically eaten with a fork and knife, and there are four notable establishments that specialize in this Chicago style ‘za, although all offer thin crust with even gluten-free and vegan options.

Pizzeria Uno
Pizzeria Uno can be found throughout the U.S., but it originated here in Chicago. Not only that, but it claims to have invented deep dish pizza. They have since grown far beyond pizza to an extensive menu and are as passionate about their craft beer as they are their pies. Their single serve deep dish pizzas make for the perfect lunch, and Monday through Friday until 3 p.m., they pair them with a soup or salad for a great deal.

Giordano’s
Brought to Chicago in 1974 from an Italian recipe 200 years old, Giordano’s is known the world over. With locations not only across Chicago but throughout the U.S., they are so well-known they even ship nationwide. Their use of Wisconsin Mozzarella and hand-picked California tomatoes, on top of a crisp buttery crust is what makes it so special. Soon to be added to their menu is a cheesy, meaty version completely made from plants!

Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria
Lou Malnati opened his first pizzeria in the area in 1971, after 30 years in the business. Lou Malnati’s prides itself on its quality ingredients and a recipe for its crisp, buttery crust that has been in the family for generations. The not-so-secret trick is that they pat out the dough by hand and spread it up the sides of the pan, which is why the crust is not as thick as you might expect. If you are really looking to go a little lighter, try the Malnati Salad with the Lou Malnati’s Sweet Vinaigrette.

Gino’s East
The true measure of deep dish pizza is how long the cheese stretches when you pull a slice from a pie, and Gino’s stretches for days! If you can’t make it to a restaurant, you can pick some up in the freezer aisle or have it shipped nationwide. The flagship location off the Magnificient Mile houses a Comedy Bar with weekly shows and an outstanding outdoor rooftop terrace.

Chicago’s Pizza
Chicago’s Pizza has taken the traditional deep dish up a notch with its famous stuffed pizza. Similar to deep dish, the dough is spread out in a pan and the toppings are loaded on top. However, a second crust is then draped on top of that before it is finished off with tomato sauce and a parmesan spice mix. They also specialize in gourmet pizzas, with honey-semolina crusts and unique sauces such as pesto or gorgonzola cream. Be sure to sign up for their coupons.

Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder Co.
Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder Co. puts a completely different spin on deep dish with its Pizza Pot Pie, which is basically an inverted deep dish pizza, with the dough all around the outside and the cheese, sauce, sausage, and mushrooms hidden inside. You must cut into the dough like you would any other pot pie to get to the filling. It is definitely unique to Chicago, and the building it resides in has a long and storied past.

Chicago Pizza Places Serving Up Regional Styles Locally

These spots offer the best of city-specific pizza styles right within the Chicago city limits.

Cafe Luigi
New York pizza pies are large, with a thin crust and doughy edge, and usually cut into eight wide slices. While native New Yorkers may swear the only place you can get good New York pizza is in New York, Cafe Luigi’s serves up a very authentic NY pie. Do like the New Yorkers do, and fold your slice. Let the grease pool in the middle or blot it with some napkins first. Either way, the ratio of crust to cheese and sauce is spot on!

Jet’s Pizza
Detroit style pizza is rectangular with a thick but crispy crust, and the cheese is caramelized around the edges. To get that doughy goodness in Chicago, turn to Jet’s Pizza, which uses a combination of a proprietary blend of flour and their signature steel pans to make a hearty, yet airy crust. Customers can even “flavorize” their crusts by adding cajun seasoning, sesame seed, butter, garlic, or romano cheese to any pizza.

Coda di Volpe
Neapolitan Pizza is a Naples-style pizza made with tomatoes and mozzarella cheese, but in order to be authentic, the tomatoes must be either San Marzano or Pomodorino del Piennolo del Vesuvio. The signature of a Neapolitan pizza is that there is more sauce than cheese, and additional toppings beyond a little basil are discouraged. The crust is so thin, you may use pizza shears to cut it. Coda di Volpe is one of the few restaurants in Chicago certified by the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana (The True Neapolitan Pizza Association). That means they have been trained in producing this style according to age-old traditions and that only the highest quality ingredients and processes are used.

Roots Handmade Pizza
Quad City Style lands somewhere between a pan pizza and a thin crust. A round pie is cut into strips using special shears. The dough includes malt, and the zesty tomato sauce contains red chili flakes and cayenne. Toppings are between the sauce and cheese. Crumbled sausage is the most popular topping. Roots Handmade Pizza brought the Quad City Style to Chicago. They make their dough fresh daily, and their sausage crumble in house. If you don’t want to dine in, you can pick up a Pizza Kit and hand toss your own pie at home. They even have a Pizza Kit for the popular Quad City Taco Pizza. If you do decide to dine in at the family-friendly restaurant, kids are plenty entertained by watching the pizza-making magic through a glass window into the kitchen. You can also request that your child gets their own tableside dough to play with while they wait for their food.

This beautifully written novel will resonate with young readers who will relate to the pressure Hanako feels as a young kid giving up everything known for something entirely different. Ages: 10-14

The back-to-school season can be one of the most hectic times of any family’s year. Sliding off of summer and into a new routine doesn’t come easy, and the list of what you need to do and buy can even seem overwhelming. Set yourself up for success by working ahead. Here are three easy things you can start now that will take a little of the back-to-school stress off your back.

Buy Supplies Gradually

Back-to-school time can put a dent in your household budget in a hurry. While you may not know your child’s exact classroom supply list or shoe size (they grow so fast) months in advance, there are certain things you know that you buy every year. Get a bin and label it “Back to School 2022-23” and buy a few things here and there.

Think about things big and small, such as:

No. 2 Pencils; sandwich bags; a backpack; socks; a lunchbox; crayons, markers or colored pencils; teacher gifts; hand sanitizer; tissues.

Book Appointments Early

Most kids get a physical once a year near their birthday but before school starts there are a handful of appointments you will want to have lined up in advance for the month or two before the first day, including vaccines, dental exams and eye exams.

One big reason to schedule your child’s eye exam: Myopia, whose primary symptom is blurry distance vision, is on the rise—in both frequency and severity.1 Earlier detection means earlier treatment. MiSight® 1 day soft contact lenses are the first and only soft contact lenses designed for myopia control and FDA approved* to slow the progression of myopia in children, aged 8 to 12 at the initiation of treatment.2† Practicing during the summer will give your little one time to prepare for putting in their contacts during the school year, but in a clinical study, MiSight® 1 day was easy for children to remove from the start: 97% found lens removal easy at one week, improving to 100% by one month!³

Practice Your Route

Whether you’re going to drive every day, take the bus or they will be walking, familiarize your kids, and yourself, with the route to school. This can be especially critical if changing schools, such as the leap from preschool to elementary or elementary to middle school.

If you’re going to walk: Use it as an excuse to do a family stroll. It doesn’t matter what day or time you walk, at first it’s just about getting used to the things you’ll see. Talk about landmarks and observe things that will make the children see it as a pleasurable experience. As you get even closer to back-to-school time, start the walk closer to the actual commute time to adjust to the soon-to-be routine.

If you’re driving: Start driving the route now and again for fun. Pick out songs that will be morning and afternoon commute songs. Hand the kids a stopwatch and have them time the route. Talk about the things you see outside, and how they change over the seasons.

If they’re taking the bus: If it’s possible, try to drive the bus route. Make it a regular activity, and again, ask the kids what they see out the window. Say things like, “When you’re on the school bus, what will you see at this corner?” This can help reduce anxiety when they actually get on the bus. Pretend to be the driver and enforce bus rules.

If you don’t have access to a car, pretend-play the bus scenario. Even if your children have taken the bus before, acting out the school bus trip can be an anxiety-reducing activity to throw in the mix a few times over the spring and summer before the next school year. Take turns being the driver, put on backpacks and play-act climbing on the bus. Make a game of it!

Of course, going back to school will be different for each child, but whenever possible it will benefit everyone to think ahead in terms of what you need physically, and mentally, to be prepared for a brand new year.

There are two words that can fill any child with glee: Summer break. School is out, alarm clocks are put to rest, and playtime is the only task on a day’s agenda.

For parents, though, this three-month recess from school can cause a surge of panic. How can I keep my child busy all day? What if they forgot what they learned this past year? What activities will enrich their mind?

Fortunately, all of these questions and more can be answered through summer camp. Not only will children be kept busy (and out of your hair!), but they’ll garner new skills, make friends and create long-lasting memories.

At Imaginology Kids in Los Angeles, California, kiddos as young as three through third grade can reap the benefits of camp. Children will be exposed to play that incorporates science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics (STEAM) to stimulate problem-solving, critical thinking and creativity.

We’ve broken down four reasons your soon-to-be-campers will love a summer spent with Imaginology Kids.

1. Each Week Features a New Theme

To keep every camper interested and engaged, Imaginology has a rotating roster of themes for every week of summer. Kids will enjoy hands-on activities with Summer Carnival, Under the Sea, Camp Doctors, Camp Story Theatre, Camp Restaurant, the Science Behind Bubbles, Let’s Go Camping and Planet Recycling Superheroes.

2. Children Can Take Their Exploration to the Next Level

Imaginology Kids allows campers the opportunity to freely experience and explore everything that encompasses the “earth, wind, water and light.” The facility features a large collection of natural and repurposed material alongside high-quality, unique educational equipment that’ll ignite their imagination and inspire STEAM-based learning.

3. There’s an Indoor Water Lab

Campers of all ages can experiment with water, ice and cold steam. Unlike most children’s museums offering water play, Imaginology’s Lab is set up for true experimentation with funnels, pipettes, bottles, jars, sponges, rope, wood, plants, twigs and more.

The lab also features faux animals that children can care for or they can test their potion-making skills. With drains in the lab floor, children can safely learn and play.

4. There’s Also a Space With Wind Tunnels

Located inside Imaginology’s Earth lab, the two wind tunnels are designed for experimenting with the power of wind and gravitational pull with the use of colorful scarves, ribbons and assorted materials.

The Earth lab also allows campers to create their own ramps out of plastic, wood and rubber, which they can put to the test for stability and speed by rolling items down their hand-made structures.

Enroll your children with Imaginology Kids this summer— it’s easy to sign up, by the week or by the day!

Skateboarding is undeniably cool. Kids know this. You know this. If your adventurer is chomping at the bit to grind on some rails, visit one of these kid-friendly skate parks—all with something a little different to offer. Some have an area set aside for beginners so your soon-to-be shredders can learn and roll at their own pace. (P.S. We’re also sharing the best spots to take lessons.) If boarding isn’t their thing, some also allow bikes and rollerblades. Grab your helmet and protective gear and set out for a day of fun.

Where to Skateboard Outdoors

Logan Boulevard Skate Park

Logan Boulevard Skate Park, located under the Kennedy expressway in Logan Square, is somewhat sheltered for weather and every bit as cool and gritty as it sounds. All wheels are allowed, including BMX bikes, at this well-lit skater’s haven. The cool aspect of this park is the City of Chicago and the Chicago Park District commissioned original art to decorate the skate park—sculptures and art made from recycled materials and chrome. Also, Haas Park is nearby, which features a playground, fitness center and spray pool.

Grant Skate Park

Don't let the huge size of Grant Skate Park and scope intimidate you. This three-acre park located at the southern end of Grand Park includes more than a dozen rails, ramps and stairs as well as straight stretches of concrete. BMX bikes and skates are also welcome. Parents can hang out in one of the viewing areas to keep an eye on their kids and enjoy the skyline views.

Indian Boundary Skate Park

Indian Boundary Skate Park is part of a larger 76-acre sports facility in Bolingbrook. This outdoor concrete skate park features half and quarter pipes, pyramids and lots of rails for grinding. The best part: beginner skateboarders can learn the ropes in a designated practice area with a small box, complete with rails and training platforms.

Central Park Skate Plaza

Bolingbrook's 2nd skate Park, Central Park Skate Plaza is significantly larger and includes ramps, ledges, banks, rails, staircases, steps, skate benches, a platform and skate boxes. It was designed to mimic an urban plaza and offers spectacular views of the popular Central Park. Bikes, boarders and bladers are all welcome.

Community Park West and Swenson Park

Glenview has two fun outdoor skate parks designed for skateboarders and inline skaters only. While both Community Park West and Swenson Park are good for all levels, Swenson park is ideal for beginners. At 7,000 sq. ft., it’s smaller and a bit easier for little kids to navigate and practice tricks. Swenson also has an in-line hockey rink. Parents can visit the nearby playground for younger siblings. Also, a big upside is the park is designed with a skatelite surface—a durable paper-composite material—instead of concrete, which makes falls a little less painful.

Frontier & Centennial Park

The Naperville Park District has 2 skate parks located at Frontier Sports Complex and Centennial Park. Frontier was renovated in 2021 and both contain several skating elements including half-pipes, quarter-pipes, boxes, rails and more. Centennial is located along the DuPage River, next to the outdoor community pool and a large park. Non-motorized skateboards, in-line skates and scooters are welcome.

Audubon Skatepark

Elk Grove Village offers both an indoor and outdoor skate option at Audobon Skatepark. It's a great place for all levels to practice tricks, ride ramps and rails and grind ledges. Be warned, the indoor park is not heated so they close if the temps drop below 10 degrees (or at staff discretion).

Wilson Skate Park

Near Montrose Beach, Wilson Skate Park is well lit and fairly small, giving your skater a chance to get their bearings without a crowd or ton of distractions. This oasis is known for its smooth transitions, large pools, ramps and grind boxes. Plus, parking is free. You’ll see a bunch of families and kids here on weekends along with some of Chicago’s famed female quad skaters.

Skate Park at Olympic Park

Schaumburg Park District's Skate Park at Olympic Park was designed to mimic elements of parking lots, street curbs and other skater-enticing areas you'd find in a cityscape. Skaters will also find staircases, benches, walls of various heights and a large concrete bowl.

Ryann Buss Zone Skate Park

Located at Knox Park in McKenry, Ryan Buss Zone Skate Park offers a variety of ramps and rails that will challenge even the most experienced skater. Helmets are required at this skate park.

Where to Skateboard Inside

Asylum Skate Park

If it’s raining outside or you just want a different experience, check out the indoor Asylum Skate Park and skate shop in Lake Bluff. BMX, inline, skateboards and scooters are welcome here. If your kids are completely new to skateboarding and need to learn the basics, Asylum offers camps and lessons that will teach them how to start, stop, drop-in, olly, ride ramps, balance and do basic tricks.

For Skateboarding Lessons

SK8 Chicago

Certified Personal Trainer and lifelong skateboarder Ben Karbin created SK8 Chicago to provide lessons to the next generation of boarders. Over the last 20 years mentoring young skaters, he's honed his ability to make aspiring skaters feel comfortable and confident to learn new tricks and techniques. SK8 offers skate lessons, clinics and camps for all levels and also builds custom ramps. They have equipment available to rent if you don't have your own and can offer advice if you'd like to make a purchase.

Little Ripper Skateboarding

Looking for a way to keep kids active during the pandemic shutdowns, Logan Square dad Enrico Hufana started Little Rippers Skateboarding. Hufana and other experienced instructors give kids ages 3-14 an introduction to boarding so they have the confidence to safely navigate all skate parks.

Kai Neukermans is getting ready to graduate next month, but first, he had one big thing to check off his bucket list: play with Pearl Jam. The 18-year-old’s dream came true this past weekend when the band’s drummer, Matt Cameron, unfortunately tested positive for COVID. So Neukermans made his move.

The high school senior happens to know Eddie Vedder’s daughter, Olivia, and thanks to her, he found out the band was taking submissions for substitutes for the upcoming show at the Oakland Arena. Like any soon-to-be graduating senior, he had an important decision to make. “I had a statistics test in my next period class, which I’m not doing very well in, but I’m sure they’ll let me take it next week,” Neukermans told SF Gate.

It appears the decision to practice with his drum teacher paid off, because the teen was given the opportunity of a lifetime when Vedder announced he would be subbing for Cameron, playing “Mind Your Manners.” In a video of the concert, Vedder says, “He hasn’t graduated high school yet. This is the year, right?”

After the singer pushed Neukermans toward the drum kit and he was handed a pair of sticks, the band was off and running. It took just over three minutes for the teenager’s dream to come true, but he played like he was one of the gang for the past few decades.

When it was all over, Vedder raised up the high school senior’s hand and had him take a bow. “That’s Kai right there!”

Later, Neukermans shared the experience on his own Instagram, with the caption, “Another unexcused absence at school on Friday. Busy getting ready for this!” Sometimes sacrifices must be made, after all.

In the meantime, the teen is headed back to high school to finish out his senior year and attend graduation. After that, he and his band, The Alive, plan to record some new songs and release an EP, according to SF Gate. With a gig playing for Pearl Jam under his belt, we’re guessing Kai is going places.

In the meantime, we hope Eddie Vedder wrote him the most epic excuse note.
