Children have a language all their own, which doesn’t always include the words to express if there is a more significant medical issue at play. When it comes to vision, your child might not realize that they aren’t “seeing well.” In children, it is much more common for vision problems to manifest in small ways. If you’re wondering if your child is experiencing vision issues, check out these six common signs.

Research shows that insufficient time spent outdoors and prolonged time spent reading, playing or working with digital devices and poor lighting may influence the development of myopia.1-3

Myopia, if you didn’t know, is when you experience blurry distance vision largely because the eye is longer than it should be. Plus, genetics and environmental factors influence myopia’s progression.4 Myopia requires ongoing monitoring because myopia can get worse as a child grows. In addition to updating their eye prescription, it can lead to long-term eye health impacts such as retinal detachment, maculopathy or glaucoma.5,6

Good news for parents: MiSight® 1 day soft contact lenses are designed for myopia control and are FDA approved* to slow the progression of myopia in children, aged 8-12 at the initiation of treatment.†7

1. They Avoid Reading

Your little bookworm isn’t as interested in reading, and it’s not just the summer slide. If you have a child who normally can’t get enough of their favorite books and now appears disinterested, it could be because reading is uncomfortable due to eye focusing or eye teaming challenges.

2. They Move Closer to Things to See Well

If a child is experiencing myopia—whose primary symptom is blurry distance vision—this could manifest as moving closer to the TV or not being able to recognize faces or see signs from afar.

3. They Seem to Understand the School Concepts but Still Struggle to Keep Up, Especially with in-School Work or Projects

If your child’s teacher lets you know they are not keeping up in class, it might not be because they don’t understand the concepts. It can simply be that they cannot see the work or the teacher’s written explanation clearly. For some children, textbooks, worksheets and computer screens can look blurry, making it difficult to read. This can be because of their prescription or struggling to change focus.

4. They Seem Extra or Easily Frustrated

Any and all of the above can lead to feelings of frustration and low self-esteem in children, which can manifest in ways that aren’t necessarily related to school. If your otherwise pleasant child is now a nightmare at dinner time or flies off the handle at the slightest critique, it may be a sign that a bigger issue is at play. (It may also be a sign you have tweenager!)

5. They Squint!

While making a squishy little face can be cute, if your child is doing this frequently, especially if you’re holding something up for them to see, this is a sign that they are having trouble seeing objects at a distance.

6. Poor Hand-Eye Coordination

If there’s a marked decline in your child’s hand-eye coordination, especially noticeable in sports, playing musical instruments or other hands-on activities, it could mean they are experiencing vision problems.

If your child is struggling with a number of these common signs, it might be time to schedule a comprehensive eye exam with an eye care professional near you. During the appointment you can discuss if MiSight® 1 day soft contact lenses are right for them. They’re designed for myopia control and are FDA approved* to slow the progression of myopia in children, aged 8-12 at the initiation of treatment.†7

It’s a no-brainer that kids want to do everything that you do, including those cycling classes they see you so pumped about. The Little Tikes Pelican Explore & Fit Cycle nails it: It’s the kid-sized version of that super popular cycle…we’ll just say it rhymes with “Sweataton.”

This bike is like a cycling or spin class for kids, personality-pumped trainer included! One of our editors, Jamie Aderski, and her son, Watson (5), tested out the new Pelican Explore & Fit Cycle. Read on to learn more about the hot new bike that is sure to be on every kid’s (and parent’s) wish list!

The Review

I am a huge spin class fan (but only at home where people can’t see what a mess I am!) and I love my at-home cycling setup. When the Pelican arrived, I have to admit, I was a little jealous… of my five year old—This. Is. COOL! It’s a mini-version of my favorite ride to nowhere plus a full sensory experience—nothing “stationary” about it. Here’s what blew us away about the Pelican:

1. Motivating & Fun Trainers + Adventures

Much like that other bike, Pelican's trainers are full of energy and excitement! I love the ease of access to the vids: Just head to YouTube and hit play. Not only are their trainers top-notch, but the visuals of the videos take kids on adventures! You can experience the thrills of mountain biking or snowboarding (no real skills required) and even a roller coaster. Watson said it best: “It’s like going to another world!". Pelican, take me away...

2. Adjustable!

Jamie Aderski

The bike itself has adjustable seating and handlebars—perfect for kids of all sizes and if you have more than one rider, it can be easily adapted to their height. What we thought was really cool is that there's a lever that adjusts the pedal intensity, with three different levels. Hey, sometimes you wanna ride pedal-to-the-metal and sometimes you just wanna coast—Pelican gets it!

3. More Than Just Pedaling

Hot (and unexpected!) feature alert: The Pelican tilts back and forth to add to the thrills, minus the spills! Not only that, kids can "steer" the front wheel which makes for a good time. My two year old is too little to pedal the bike, but loved that she could just sit on it and go for a "ride". Watson said: "I love how bouncy it is!"—agreed! The Pelican is stationary, but not sedentary and it's pretty darn awesome!

4. Bluetooth Speaker

Jamie Aderski

This feature feels grown-up and cool. Watson is a big music fan and now can play his favorite jams while riding along to the beat. Favorite songs of the moment? Anything by BTS, Imagine Dragons or that Parry Grip guy—the forecast is always calling for tacos, y'all.

5. No Tablet, No Problem

That’s right. You don’t even need to part with your smartphone for this ride. The Pelican comes with built-in audio adventures to cruise along with. You get excitement right out of the box with or without a screen!

6. Surprise—You’re Exercising!

Gotcha, kiddo. Pelican made it so simple for our son to get active and have fun!

Whether you’re #TeamTablet or all about limiting screen time, the use of technology in little hands can be a life-saving boredom buster, enriching and fun—if you’re not having to manage your little one’s every move. Enter Google Kids Space: a new kids mode with content to help kids discover, create, and grow—on tablets at an unarguably incredible price point. Read on to learn more about Google Kids Space and how our editor’s kids used this new tablet experience!

Designed With Kids’ Curiosity In Mind

Jamie Aderski

If you do a Google search for tablets, you'll find a lot of options. What’s hard to find: Tablets designed specifically for kids, with expertly curated content and a straightforward design that kids as young as three can understand. That's where Google Kids Space comes in! To create a one-of-a-kind tablet experience that encourages kids' curiosity, Google teamed up with children’s education and media specialists, teachers and other experts to handpick games and books. The kids mode also recommends videos that spark creativity and play. Paired with the easy-to-use parental controls from Google Family Link, it's a win-win for families.

Curated Content

S. Massey

When setting up Google Kids Space on your child's tablet profile, your child has the opportunity to select areas of interest, such as sports, cooking, animals, science and more. On their home screen, they'll find content suggestions based on their selected interests. They can easily navigate among the homepage (with new recommendations every day), "Play" (teacher-approved apps and games that are age-appropriate), "Read" (handpicked books), "Watch" (videos from YouTube Kids), and "Make" (videos that encourage offline play). Parental controls that you've set up for your child's Google account managed with Family Link are applied to the curated content that your child might select. Bonus: If your kids are sharing a tablet, each child can have their own profile so they'll be able to customize their own interests! Google Kids Space is best suited for kids aged 3 to 8.

Smart & Easy Parental Controls

iStock

More independence for them with less worry for you: Google Family Link helps parents manage their child’s device. Parents can download the free Family Link app on compatible Android, iOS, and Chrome OS devices. Family Link helps parents do things like allowing or blocking apps on a child's device or setting time limits—all from their own phone. The best news: Since you control the settings through your child's Google account on this tablet, you'll be setting the guardrails for any time your child logs into his or her Google account.

Bottom line: Google Kids Space and Family Link transform tablets into multi-functional, super practical and easy-to-use devices.

Our Experience

S. Massey

In a household with four children ranging in age from 3 to 12, Google Kids Space was a hit with everyone. Since we could easily set up a custom profile for each kid, everyone got to enjoy the tablet and was able to find fun content that fit their age and interests. Once we had her profile set up—which only takes a few minutes—our littlest one was able to navigate between Sesame Street and Peppa Pig videos with only a minimal amount of frustration! When the tablet is open to her account, the home screen has suggestions picked for her, which means she spent more time actually using apps instead of asking us to help her pick a game (and another game after she changes her mind and another after that).

Even though our three year old and 7 year old were using the tablet, which would usually get some resistance about it being a toy for little kids, we got zero complaints about having the same device! When our son was in his profile, he was able to set his interests for vehicles and animals instead of princesses—giving him a very different experience than his sister—and the apps like Code Karts and home screen features like interesting animal facts let him feel like the tablet is for big kids. We had two tablets, but, with different profiles, we could easily take just one with us for traveling!

Google Kids Space is compatible on select tablets. Learn about compatible tablets here.

Books and video content not available in all regions. Video content subject to availability of YouTube Kids app. Books content requires the Play Books app. Availability of apps, books, and video content may change without notice. “Alexa, let’s read!” Now your favorite AI helper has one more trick up her sleeve: reading with your child. Amazon’s new Reading Sidekick might help shape the future of literacy and it’s available for families everywhere by Friday.

The Sidekick works on both the Amazon Kids-enabled Echo device or the Amazon Kids+ app on a tablet and supports hundreds of books, both physical and digital. Once your child says the prompt, Alexa will ask how much they want to read: a little, a lot or taking turns. From there, Alexa will either read most of the pages, let the child read most of the pages, or alternate paragraphs or pages.

To keep the fun going, Alexa will offer support, like “Way to stick with it!” or “Amazing job!” And if your child gets stuck on a word, she can fill in the blank, too. The product is designed to complement the time you spend reading with your children and to support independent reading.

You’ll need to purchase an Amazon Kids+ subscription to get started, which is $2.99 a month. But you can start with a one month free trial to make sure it’s a fit for your family. Reading Sidekick offers a wide range of books, from early readers to chapter books. It’s one more way to bring your favorite stories to life and develop an essential skill!

Cool Tech for Big Kids

The all-new Fire Kids Pro tablets for kids ages 6 to 12, come with a 7-inch, 8-inch HD or 10-inch HD screen. You can expect these new tablets to look less like a toy compared to the original line for younger kids. The protective case is slimmer (dare we say, cooler?) and includes a kickstand to prop up the tablet and a home screen that looks more like the one you’d use. Aside from the grown-up look and feel, the available content is geared towards the older set, too, with a wider selection just for them (including music!).

Smart(er) Web Browser

More independence for them with less worry for you: The Fire Kids Pro web browser includes a setting that gives kids open but filtered access to the web. Now they can explore on their own with guardrails, research for a school project, or just chill out with a favorite movie. Bottom line: This tablet is now multi-functional and super practical!

Profiles with Fire Kids Pro offer three levels of restrictions: limited, moderate and full. By default, the tablets use moderate restrictions, with tighter filters on web browsing and no access to in-app purchases or expanded content. Built-in controls are designed to help filter out inappropriate sites and you can block specific sites as you see fit. And there is another ally on your side—the Parent Dashboard! Here you can set time limits, see what sites they're visiting and for how long, establish learning goals, set a bedtime, block or allow specific sites and more—so you (are still) the boss.

Expanded Amazon Kids+ Content

Fire Kids Pro comes with a one-year subscription to Amazon Kids+, which includes a huge selection of premium entertainment and educational content that older kids are drawn to. Kids can choose from thousands of apps, songs, Audible books, games including Teen Titans Go and Asphalt 8, books like Keeper of the Lost Cities and Chronicles of Narnia, PG and PG-13 videos hand-selected by the Amazon Kids team, plus educational content from National Geographic, Rabbids Coding, LEGO® and more.

In addition to Kids+ content, Fire Kids Pro tablets include access to a digital store so kids can request apps like Disney+, Spotify, Minecraft, Zoom and more. Once their request is sent, parents have the final say, approving purchases and downloads.

Fire Kids Pro also includes a music row with stations like iHeartRadio Family. Kids can choose from an array of curated playlists like Acoustic for Kids and Homework Inspiration, as well as live radio stations—rock on!

Video & Voice Calling

Hot feature alert: Kids can stay in touch and on top of school projects with the Fire Kids Pro, by making and receiving voice and video calls over Wi-Fi! This feature is available for kids to call contacts with a Fire Kids tablet, Alexa-enabled device, or the Alexa app. Parents have to approve the contacts and have visibility into calling history. Now kids can easily chat with friends to collaborate on homework or stay in touch with family. Kids can make announcements like “I’m done with my homework” from the tablet to Alexa-enabled devices at home—pretty cool, Amazon!

You Are in Control

Yes, this is a “more mature” tablet, but it comes with parental controls so you can customize your kid's experience, no matter where you are! With Amazon's Parent Dashboard you can control options from anywhere and make changes to access, view their activities, set time limits and more, all through your desktop or mobile phone without touching the tablet.

The Fire Kids Pro tablet is smart tech that grows with them, by adjusting the parental control preference as your kids age up. Why does that matter? It makes this device super flexible, fitting all types of parenting styles and kids' ages! You can also approve or deny purchases from the digital store. Kids can request apps from the digital store, then parents review requests and grant approval to app download or purchase, so no surprise charges—now you can let your kids explore without stressing about what they're doing and where they're going because you are in control of it all (but that can be our secret... ).

Parents can set and adjust the level of access with different features, such as web browser and digital store access, at any time on the Parent Dashboard. For the Web Browser, built-in controls help filter out inappropriate sites, and you can block specific sites as you see fit.

Both tablets offer access to the (brilliant) Parent Dashboard! Here you can set time limits, see what sites they're visiting and for how long, establish learning goals, set a bedtime, block or allow specific sites and more—all remotely so you (are still) the boss.

Both Get a One-Year Subscription to Amazon Kids+, With Expanded Content for Older Kids

Both the Fire Kids Pro and Fire Kids come with one year of Amazon Kids+ with access to over 20,000 books, movies, TV shows and other kid-friendly content curated by Amazon—wow. That is a massive amount of content, and we are impressed!

The Amazon Kids+ subscription provides access to even more content to fit any picky older kids' tastes. Older kids can choose from thousands of apps, songs, Audible books, games, including Teen Titans Go and Asphalt 8, books like Keeper of the Lost Cities and Chronicles of Narnia, PG and PG-13 videos hand-selected by the Amazon Kids team, plus educational content from National Geographic, Rabbids Coding, LEGO® and more.

Fire Kids Pro Features a Digital Store

In addition to expanded Amazon Kids+ content, Fire Kids Pro tablets include access to a digital store so kids can request apps like Disney+, Spotify, Minecraft, Zoom and more. Once their request is sent, parents have the final say, approving purchases and downloads.

Fire Kids Pro Has Video & Voice Calling(!)

With Fire Kids Pro, kids can stay in touch by making and receiving voice and video calls over Wi-Fi! This feature allows kids to call from the tablet to approved contacts with an Alexa-enabled device or the Alexa app. Parents have to approve the contacts and have visibility into calling history. Now kids can easily chat with friends to collaborate on homework or stay in touch with family, all while parents have peace of mind on who they can chat with. Kids can make announcements like "I'm done with my homework" from the tablet to Alexa-enabled devices at home—pretty cool, Amazon!

Both Give You Control, With More Flexibility Within Levels of Control With Fire Kids Pro

Both versions include parental controls so you can customize your kid's experience, no matter where you are! With Amazon's Parent Dashboard, you can control options from anywhere and make changes to access, view their activities, set time limits and more, all through your desktop or mobile phone without touching the tablet. With the "Learn First" feature, grown-ups can block access to games and cartoons until after educational goals are met. With both the Fire Kids Pro and Fire Kids tablet, you can let your kids explore without stressing about what they're doing and where they're going because you are in control of it all (but that can be our secret... ).

With Fire Kids Pro, parents can be flexible with parental controls, adjusting their preference on different features as kids age up. It makes this device super flexible, fitting all types of parenting styles and meeting kids changing needs through a wide range of stages between the ages of 6-12.

Both Offer a Worry-Free Guarantee!

Worried about drops and bumps with kids? Don't be. Fire Kids Pro and Fire Kids tablets come with a sturdy case in cool colors and fun prints to keep it protected. The difference is that the Fire Kids Pro looks more "adult" with a slimmer, more streamlined case. For both editions, the case is genius. They each feature a built-in kickstand which is ideal for hands-free video-watching, game-playing, and more. The best part? All Fire Kids Pro and Fire Kids tablets include a two-year worry-free guarantee; if it breaks, return it, and Amazon will replace it free—you just can't go wrong here.

Write your first name, recognize numbers, know the sounds of the alphabet, pay attention and take turns…the list of kindergarten readiness tasks can be daunting. Summer success programs can be key to help kids prep for school, but when COVID-19 locked down the country last year, educators had to innovate.

Would a fully virtual readiness program work with four and five-year-olds? The Ohio State University decided to try it and researchers found that it was successful in theory and in practice. Their data showed that it was feasible to operate, it was popular with teachers and parents and it had success in teaching children literacy skills, early math skills and emotional regulation.

“The promising evidence is that a virtual problem like this can succeed, despite the challenges,” said Rebecca Dore, lead author of the study and senior research associate at Ohio State’s Crane Center for Early Childhood Research and Policy.

Ninety-one families enrolled in the four-week virtual program last year and received storybooks plus a computer tablet preloaded with educational videos. It also included weekly individual video interactions between teachers and children and a weekly video or phone meeting with parents. The final result? Seventy-seven percent of families finished the program and teachers found that kids were engaged for more than half the lesson 90% of the time. Participating children were tested before and after the program and the final data showed an upswing in all testing categories.

Although life is returning to normal, the success of this virtual program is promising for other scenarios. Kids who live in very rural areas may not have ready access to resources and kids who must stay home due to extended illness could certainly benefit from future online offerings. Technology for the win!
