As the holiday season approaches you may find yourself humming along to the popular carol, “I’ll Be Home for Christmas.” The holidays usually see the year’s biggest uptick in travel, but with COVID-19 still active, a recent survey by Travelocity found that almost 60% of Americans report they won’t be traveling this year. Nearly one-in-three said they won’t celebrate the holidays at all.

That doesn’t mean people are staying at home entirely either. The Travelocity 2020 Holiday Outlook survey conducted in mid-September, found that travelers are feeling surprisingly optimistic when it comes to leisure travel for the remainder of the year. One-in-four respondents said they have a personal vacation planned later this year, and nearly half of family travelers  with kids under the age of 18 are taking a leisure trip before the year’s end.

Travelocity is predicting the following trends based on the data collected:

  • Stay at a Hotel this Holiday: More travelers (43%) say they plan to stay at a hotel or vacation rental this year, with hotels being the slightly more popular option.
  • Get Road Trip Ready: Nearly 80% of respondents plan to drive for November and December holidays, and 1-in-5 will fly.
  • Pack for a Long Weekend: Holiday travelers say they’ll stay through the long weekend. More than half (53%) plan to stay between 1-4 days opposed to shorter day trips.
  • Celebrate Close to Home: Two-thirds of holidaymakers plan to travel 250 miles or less.

How-To Holiday Away from Home:

  • Keep travel plans flexible: The controlled spread of COVID-19 in a travelers’ origin or destination is now the top consideration in determining whether to travel. Because travel plans can change, search for hotels with free cancellation and flights without change fees.
  • Find hotels using enhanced cleaning filters: One-third of travelers say that safe accommodations at their travel destination will determine whether or not they travel this holiday season. Travelocity provides an enhanced cleaning search filter to make finding hotels and activities easy.
  • Search for flights with safety in mind: More than half of travelers who booked flights this holiday season (53%) said they are worried about flying right now. With new flight badging on Travelocity.com, it’s easy to know which airlines require masks, temperature checks and more.

What Is TytoCare?

Developed by a father of young kids, TytoCare was built with parents in mind. This handheld exam kit connects people with doctors for on-demand medical exams from the comfort of home. TytoCare uses cutting edge technology and impressive innovation for in-depth exams, including capturing vital signs like heart rate and temperature—as if the doctor is home with you.

Now you can skip the crowded waiting room! TytoCare handheld exam kit and app let you perform guided medical exams with a healthcare provider or by yourself with the guidance of the app’s TytoAcademy tutorial to ensure accurate exam data is captured.

The exam kit, together with TytoApp™ (android or iOS), enables you to examine your child’s ears, lungs, heart, throat, skin, abdomen and temperature, to share with a board-certified physician for a quick diagnosis. As needed, the doctor can send a prescription to your local pharmacy —it’s the quickest, safest and easiest doc visit you’ve ever experienced!

What’s in the Kit?

Answer: Everything you need to keep your family healthy and put your mind at ease! Just download the TytoApp to connect with a healthcare professional, and use the simple tools the kit provides:

Why We Love It

When it comes to making, keeping and physically showing up to doctor appointments, now more than ever there are so many obstacles in the way. With work and school being remote in order to keep people safe, it only makes sense that healthcare would follow suit.

While telemedicine isn’t completely new, TytoCare’s method is! Their innovative and comprehensive approach, from appointment to virtual visit to care plan is not only time saving, but also stress saving. Now you don’t need to worry about risking your family’s health by sitting in a crowded, germ-filled waiting room or being in person at a doctor’s office.

More than just a video chat with a doctor, TytoCare provides medical exams whenever you need them, whether it’s 2 p.m. or 2 a.m. It’s also incredibly efficient: Your child can be examined, diagnosed and prescribed treatment without having to travel. No more debates about whether or not to rush to urgent care, with TytoCare, you’ll know immediately if action needs to be taken or if you can (hopefully) go back to sleep.  Also, it’s completely secure. TytoCare uses a HIPAA-secure platform that only you and the healthcare provider can access, so you can be certain your information is safe and secure.

Bottom line: TytoCare is peace of mind and that, like our health, is priceless.

How do you like your coffee? Black, with milk and sugar or…spun into the fabric of your kids’ new coat? If you prefer your coffee in a cup, hear us out. Reima, the kids activewear company out of Finland, is set to debut their newest innovation in kidswear: Coffee Bean Shimmer Fabric, available in a kids two-in-one down jacket and a one-piece newborn snowsuit. Released on September 29, which also happens to be National Coffee Day, these innovative outwear pieces will make you fall in love with coffee all over again.

These coats are seriously made out of coffee? What does the coffee do?
For the coffee-obsessed, you may be disappointed that the coats don’t actually smell like coffee. But, Reima’s smart textile engineers designed the fabric so that the particles of carbonized coffee grounds are spun into the polyester on a very microscopic level. According to the Reima team, they’re “very, very small.”

Even at a microscopic level, coffee lovers and non coffee aficionados will have to agree that the caffeinated design is innovative. Reima tells us that when tiny particles of ground coffee are carbonized at high temperature, the carbon forms honeycomb structures. By adding those particles into their 100% polyester material, Reima’s textile engineers are able to increase the fabric’s heat retention capability, which will help your kiddos stay warm. They go on to tell us that beyond storing heat, this process decreases the build-up of static electricity in the fabric, which prevents the formation of odors.

Besides the coffee grounds, what’s special about these new pieces?
Just like Reima’s other designs, this kids jacket and newborn snowsuit are well made and durable. For families with multiple children who play hard, you can expect these two new outerwear pieces to hold up across multiple seasons and siblings. They won’t show wear or tear on the first tumble or rainy day.

The Coffee Bean Shimmer fabric is made with a waterproof, breathable PU lamination, which means that you can wear it from the warmer, early days of fall through the coldest winter months. Both styles are insulated with responsible down standard certified down and features, and for those looking for specifics, the fill power of the insulation is 550.

We love that the kids two-in-one down jacket can be worn as a jacket or a vest. The newborn one-piece honeycomb snowsuit also is multi-functional: wear it as a snowsuit with legs or convert it to a sleeping bag simply by closing the zip in the leg inseams from both directions. Either way you wear it, baby and the older kids, will stay dry and warm.

The two-in-one down jacket will be available in 6 colors from 4T-14Y and retails for $139.95. Choose from the slimmer “Heiberg” or the “Beringer” straight cut. The one-piece newborn coat will be available in three colors from 0-3 months, 3-6 months and 6-9 months and retails for $139.95. Starting September 29, 2020 buy online at us.reima.com or at amazon.com.

Get the scoop on the pros and cons of a baby food maker, along with our top picks

Your baby is six months old. You’ve made it through the newborn stage, and maybe they’re sleeping through the night. It’s time for you to tackle another big milestone—solid foods. At this point, you’ll need to decide whether or not to buy pre-prepared purees or make homemade meals, and if you ask other parents if you need a baby food maker, be prepared to get some strong opinions, both for and against. But have no fear, we’ll help you with the answer. Read on to find out if a baby food maker is right for your family and which brands we recommend.

Why Some People Love Their Baby Food Maker

1. Making your own baby food is cheaper than buying store-bought baby food, and more environmentally friendly since there are fewer jars and pouches to throw away.

2. You can control exactly what your child is eating, making sure you give them a variety of nutrients and limit sugar, salt, and preservatives. You can cook up fruits, veggies, meat, and fish in your baby food maker, with any herbs and spices you like.

3. By pureeing foods that the rest of the family eats, you introduce your child at an early age to flavors they’ll be eating as they grow up.

4. Baby food makers are built with busy parents in mind. Some operate one-handed, and they have timers so you can set them to steam or blend and walk away until the food is ready to eat.

5. They have more longevity than you might think. You can use your baby food maker even if your child doesn’t eat baby food purees. Use it to steam veggies or make mashed potatoes or applesauce for your baby or the whole family. You can also use it to reheat chilled foods.

Related: Why Baby-Led Weaning Was One of Our Best Parenting Moves

Why Some People Skip It

1. Buying, washing, chopping, steaming, pureeing, and storing baby food takes time, and not everybody has that. You also need to carve out time to clean the baby food maker and the reusable containers you store the food in, as well as plan out your menus and find baby food recipes.

2. Baby food makers are usually compact, but they’ll still take up space in your cupboards or on your countertop.

3. If you spend a lot of time outside your home on errands or adventures, you need to find a way to pack and refrigerate the foods you bring with you and heat them up when it’s time to eat. Store-bought foods are often shelf-stable and you can buy more as you’re out living your life.

4. If you already have a steamer and a blender or immersion blender, you can perform the same functions of a baby food maker, just with a bit more clean-up since baby food makers let you steam and blend in the same container.

In addition to steaming and blending, you can defrost and reheat foods to a comfortable temperature for the baby. The unit can be used one-handed if you’re holding your baby, and it comes with a spatula, mixing lid/smoothie filter, and a recipe booklet. The Babycook Neo ($260) comes with a glass bowl and stainless steel basket and holds 5.2 cups of food.

Baby Brezza Glass Baby Food Maker, $173
The Baby Brezza has a 4-cup capacity and three modes: steam, blend, or steam automatically followed by blending. For convenience, you can steam and blend in the same glass bowl without any transferring.

Tommy Tippee Quick Food Baby Food Maker, $80
This compact, budget-friendly option lets you steam and blend up to 7 ounces of food in the same container for convenience. There’s also an included basket you can steam in if you want to remove the steaming liquid and blend up a chunkier puree for your child.

Make sure to capture all those adorable first-food moments—and share them with your family and friends near and far—with the Tinybeans app. The secure platform puts parents in total control of who sees and interacts with photos and videos of their kids.

Plenty of evidence shows that swaddling, when used correctly, can be a tremendous way to promote safe sleeping. The Safe Sleep Guidelines from the American Association of Pediatrics are clear: swaddling helps to keep babies on their back, which is the ideal sleep position to assist in preventing SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). Since the guidelines also recommend that there be no blankets, pillows or bumper pads in the crib, your baby needs to be swaddled in a correct and optimal manner. Properly done, the swaddle will stay in place, keeping baby safe and comfortable.

Some of the other benefits of swaddling?

Improved sleep for baby and for parents Decreases the Moro startle reflex, in turn increasing REM sleep, which is vital for brain development. Reduces colic and fussiness: a happy baby is a calm baby. Prevents over-stimulation and helps your little one feel comforted by mimicking the comforts of the womb.

With these things in mind, here are some of the specifics on swaddling and what you should look for in an ideal swaddle.

Temperature-regulating fabric

Fabrics that retain too much heat will only be uncomfortable at best and dangerous for baby, at worst. A baby’s body isn’t yet set up to regulate their own temperature perfectly and their small size means that they can quickly become overheated. Look for a moisture wicking fabric—as you would find in some sportswear—that will keep baby warm and dry without overheating.

Moisture wicking fabrics pull perspiration away from the skin and through the fabric so it can evaporate, rather than remaining on the skin. This is important because if not wicked away, during cooler winter nights, sweat that cools on the skin can cause baby’s body temperature to drop. And in the heat of summer, if sweat is simply trapped, baby can quickly overheat. A good fabric will keep baby comfortable all year around. Please remember it is also important to confer with your pediatrician to determine the ideal temperature for the room where your little one will be sleeping.

Flexible fabric

While some people worry that swaddling can interfere with proper hip development, among other joints, what you need to look for is a swaddle with fabric that has enough give to allow the hip joints to move freely without interfering with the comfort and safety benefits of the swaddle.

Avoid swaddles that restrict hip movement, as they can result in your baby developing hip dysplasia. Your baby needs free range of motion in their hips and legs to keep their joint development on track. The swaddle needs to be tight at the torso, but not below. It can still be perfectly safe, if bands are used below baby’s feet.

Don’t forget to band

Banding the swaddle below the feet is absolutely necessary, even as your baby grows, to ensure a snug and secure fit. What you don’t want is the fabric rising during sleep, potentially covering your baby’s face and creating a suffocation risk. Banding the excess fabric below baby’s feet ensures this won’t happen.

BONUS! Banding the bottom of the swaddle makes midnight diaper changes a breeze! No need to unswaddle and disturb baby completely, with hands flailing: just take off the band and do a quick change, ninja st‌yle.

Swaddle sizing

A swaddle should fit so that your baby can have their shoulder above the top edge of the fabric when placed on the swaddle. This may seem a little counter-intuitive, as you might think that keeping the shoulder below the fabric line will keep baby more snuggly wrapped but this actually poses the risk of suffocation if the fabric ends up in your baby’s face. Keeping the swaddle below the shoulders also ensures that no constraint is put on the shoulder joints.

Ideally, you’re looking for one with a flexible fit that will grow with your baby, though remember that once your baby is rolling over from back to stomach—typically around four to five months old—it’s time to consider using a transition swaddle (with one or both arms out) or stop swaddling altogether.

Keep it tight

Loose swaddles can actually pose a danger in that it could come undone with baby’s movement, the result being that the child gets tangled up in it. From the point of view of the Safe Sleep Guidelines, a loosened swaddle is basically a blanket and therefore a no-no in the crib.

How tight is tight enough? You should still be able to slide your hand flat between your baby’s chest and the swaddle, but not more than that.

There is no doubt that swaddling is a perfect way to help your baby master sleeping comfortably and safely. Finding a swaddle that works for your baby is the key!

Hindi Zeidman is a former infant mental health clinician and the founder of Ollie Swaddle—The Smarter Swaddle that’s made better, feels better, and helps your baby sleep longer and better. The award-winning Ollie also help baby self-calm, reduces colic/fussiness, and prevents overheating through its special patented moisture wicking fabric.
