Coleman 4-Person Dark Room™ Skydome™ Camping Tent

$149 BUY NOW

Start your camping trip off right with this easy-to-set-up tent from Coleman. We love the added dark room technology that keeps out 90% of the sunlight. This is key for families with little ones who still need to nap during the sunny hours of the day (which is almost impossible with a regular tent). It also helps during the summer months when the sun doesn't go down until much later. An added benefit is that the dark room technology will keep your tent much cooler by blocking the sun's rays during the heat of the day.

Coleman

Coleman Steel Creek

$229 BUY NOW

This six-person dome tent features a separate screen room for insect-free lounging and extra sleeping space. We love it for summer camping because there is ample ventilation to keep it cool while you sleep. Two queen air mattresses and gear have plenty of room in the main compartment, and set up is intuitive due to the  Fast Pitch™ system.

Tent Tips

Logan T. via yelp

  1. Look at the tent's floor space when deciding what size to purchase. A tent that sleeps four is going to sleep four pretty tightly (often alternating head to foot). If you want space for gear and air mattresses you will likely want to increase the size of your tent.
  2. Practice setting up your tent in advance. There's nothing worse than arriving at a campsite late in the day or in the dark and having no idea how to set up your tent.
  3. Think about what extras you might need for your tent. Does your tent come with a footprint? Should you bring a tarp to put underneath to keep the moisture out? Extra tent pegs and a rubber mallet always help with tent setup, especially on a firm surface.
  4. Weatherproof your tent before you go. Water resistant is not the same as waterproof. Apply seam sealer to keep water out of your tent.

1. If you haven't already, now's the time to head to a local pumpkin patch to pick out your future jack-o'-lantern. These pumpkin patches offer a whole lot more than a U-pick pumpkin experience. We're talking pony rides, challenging corn mazes, and a chance to take home your own dirt baby.

2. Apple season is in full swing, but that doesn't mean it's too late to go apple picking. It's just one of the many activities you'll find at local farms offering fall festivities.

3. Sit for a spell and watch the sunset during fall's longer nights.

4. Score some awesome winter wearables for every kid in your family at one of these beloved consignment stores where you are sure to find the best deals around. Hint: they're also great spots to score a new-to-you Halloween costume for that one time wear.

5. Plan an island escape that only takes an afternoon. Soak up the last vestiges of sunshine and warm weather with sand, frogs on pond trails, and nature adventures in the city.

6. Bundle up your baby and head out with the stroller. We've got the best trails for joggers and walkers mapped out so you can use them any time of year.

7. School is in, so mid-week getaways can be challenging. Upgrade your fall adventures when you strike out on a fantastic day trip for a change of scenery.

9. Free and discounted museum days? Count us in!

10. There are breweries all over Portland that welcome kids. Some even have kids' areas so you relax, sit back, and enjoy that brew or game on the big screen. Go Ducks!

11. Check out the fall colors at these stunning spots you won't want to miss.

12. Cast a line at a new or favorite fishing spot.

13. Eat at a rad restaurant that's been a First U.S. National Bank, a barber shop, and a post office.

14. Water fun doesn't end with summer. Strap on your hiking boots and hunt for the splashiest waterfall on some of these great hikes.

15.  Make your way to OMSI. Why? Because it's packed full of Marvel superheroes kids (and parents) love right now.

16. Roll through the season with an old-school activity that anyone can play. Strikes, spares, and splits are the name of the game.

17. Save some cash when you dine at these spots, where kids eat for free (or under $5).

18. Goonies never say die! Head to Astoria in the off-season when you need to get away over the weekend. We've got plenty of off-the-beaten-path destinations that are worth checking out and don't draw crowds.

19. Sure you've got your favorite neighborhood park you frequent. But Portland is packed with destination playgrounds, you've likely never heard of. Discover awesome new playgrounds for your kids today. Don't forget to bring a towel to dry off slides and swings!

20. Are your kids getting bored with inside time during the rainy season? Try one of our favorite places to play outside—no plan necessary.

21. You don't want to miss the opportunity to see all of Oregon in its seasonal beauty. So, hit the road with the kids in search of new adventures.

26. Make a plan to sleep in the trees with the kids. Our tip? Book one of these spots while you can; they go fast.

27. Need a plan for days when the kids don't have school (we're looking at you fall teacher conferences)? We've got you.

28. Go on a dizzying adventure when you check out one of these corn mazes. After you are done, you may even find a friendly animal to play with or a treat for the hungry tummies in you crew.

29. Seek out one of the city's little known spots with the kids when you need a new adventure.

30. Zip through the falling leaves at these adrenalin dumping zipline location.

The warm weather is finally here, and you know what that means: It’s time to pull out all your backyard hacks because the kids can go outside to play! Think of all the raisins and Cheerios that won’t be all over your carpeting—the spills, the scuffs, and the accidents which won’t be on your couch.

Packing up and going to the park is fun for the kids, but not always practical for you. Depending on the ages and interest levels of your children, going to the park can require an unlikely consensus, as well as a lot of gear you will likely only need if you don’t pack it.

It would be ideal if you could just send them outside in your backyard and let them have at it while you work on preparing dinner, cleaning up after the last meal, or getting some work done.

It doesn’t take a lot of space to make your backyard fun—just some planning and implementation. You can’t do it all, but you can do quite a bit with some simple changes. Work with what you have and try to make your backyard the best place for your kids to play this summer.

Organize a Treasure Hunt

Use some of the toys you have been stepping on inside your house as hidden treasures in a backyard scavenger hunt. Make this event big or small, depending on how many children you have or how many neighbor kids you have hanging around your house.

Hide the toys in places that are easy or challenging to find, depending on how busy or frustrated you want your children to be. Everyone can be a winner. Award them with a healthy snack or treat them to cookies and milk. Discuss the hunt and come up with new backyard games you can play.

Create an Obstacle Course

For older children who have some athletic ability, set up an obstacle course and have them compete to see who can complete it the fastest. Have them jump through hula hoops, duck under rope barriers and crawl through empty boxes. Use what you have around the house or in the garage. Just make sure the items are clean and nontoxic.

Prepare for arguments about who won the event, who cheated, and what was and was not fair about the obstacle course. It’s all part of the fun.

Set Up a Playset

Who needs the park when you can build your mini-park in your backyard? Playsets provide many activities in one connected structure. You can have a swing set, slides, climbing walls, forts, rope swings, or any number of attachments.

Pick out which activities suit your children’s desires and abilities, but make sure to account for the future. They grow up fast and will outgrow a playset designed only for toddlers. You don’t want to have to buy another playset in only a few years.

Get bucket swings for babies and toddlers, but use regular swings for school-aged children. Attach a tunnel the kids can run through and hide in. It’s up to you, but realize you can always add on and remove pieces as your children grow older.

Add a Sandbox

A sandbox is so much fun for kids, whether it is a standalone structure or a part of a playset. You can construct them from simple wooden boards or purchase specially designed sandboxes that look like colorful animals, cars, or spaceships.

Most home improvement stores sell sand designated for play, which is inexpensive and clean. Add a set of beach buckets and shovels, toy trucks, and any household containers, and your children will stay busy for hours.

Give Them a Chalkboard

If you have some wall space, even if it’s on a fence, give your kids a chalkboard to write on. Chalk is cheap, and kids love coloring with it. Pus, giving them a chalkboard means less chalk on your house or garage.

Tack up a chalkboard or buy chalkboard tiles sold in home improvement stores. Provide a bucket or other container for the chalk, so you don’t end up mowing over chalk chunks every week. Your kids can use chalk to make hopscotch boards, tic-tac-toe games, or for artistic endeavors. When they’re finished playing, you can easily wipe or sweep the chalk off, or you can wait for the rain to clear the boards and force your children to start over.

Build a Tree Fort

If you have trees, you can make your kids a tree fort. It can be simple — a few boards designating an area, or an elaborate dwelling built high above. It all depends on your budget, your intentions, and your abilities.

Take your children’s age into consideration before constructing a tree fort. Also, if you are concerned about their safety, start with a fort near a tree, not in a tree. They will enjoy this just as much, and you won’t have to worry about falls.

Attach a Tire Swing

Instead of a fort, you can use your tree’s limbs to attach a tire swing. Your kids won’t ever tire of a tire swing, although you may get sick of constantly pushing them. You can repurpose tires from areas where they litter a neighborhood or use your old car tires after you’ve purchased new ones for your vehicle.

Use sturdy nylon rope to attach the tire to your tree. Make sure the arc of the swing does not allow your children to smash into the house, other trees, and structures, or your neighbors’ property.

Whatever kind of backyard you have, make it the most fun backyard for your kids to play in. Use some of these ideas or come up with new ones of your own. Ask your children to help brainstorm. They won’t disappoint you with how creative they can be, even if their ideas may be unrealistic. You may not be able to dig an underground tunnel to their friend’s house, but you will find ways to make their backyard the best place to play this summer. Slather them in sunscreen and turn them outside for summertime fun they’ll never forget!

School may not be finished for the year just yet, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy some sweet warm weather vibes thanks to Starbucks’ new summer menu. Dropping on May 10, the revamped drinks and sweet treats will have you dreaming of lazy afternoons.

Hot day? Chill out with the newest icy coffee drink, the chocolate cream cold brew. It features classic Starbucks cold bew that’s sweetened with vanilla syrup then topped with delicious chocolate cream cold foam. Please and thank you.

Starbucks

Kids love a good Starbucks drink, do they? Celebrate the last day of school with a frappuccino like the caramel ribbon crunch or the mocha cookie crumble. The coffee company also has plenty of Refreshers, like the dragon drink and the mango dragonfruit lemonade.

Starbucks

When it comes to desserts, Starbucks really outdid itself this year. Say hello to the new lime-frosted coconut bar! It’s made with coconut, oatmeal and mini white chocolate chips, lime frosting on top, then drizzled with white icing and coconut shavings.

And bonus news: Both the chocolate cream cold brew and the coconut bar are permanent additions to the Starbucks menu! No waiting until summer just to get your fix.

Starbucks

Several items are making a summer comeback, including the unicorn cake pop, which makes for the perfect bribe when you just need a moment of peace and quiet to enjoy your afternoon pick-me-up.

Starbucks’ seasonal coffee is also hitting the shelves in the form of the Odyssey Blend. The Arabica blend has been responsibly sourced from Peru, West Java and Rwanda by the company’s Coffee and Farmer Equity (C.A.F.E.) Practices sourcing program. You can snag a pound just during the summer for $16 per bag.

Starbucks

And finally, what’s summer without some bright and colorful drinkware? The lineup of tumblers and cups is undeniably cheery and includes color-changing cups, a new purple iridescent bling cup and an entire collection of lime options.

Starbucks

Don’t forget to pick up a reusable cup—not only to help the environment (the much bigger deal) but also to earn 10 cents off your drink plus 25 Stars. The Starbucks summer menu is available now in cafés and for mobile ordering.

Still, that doesn’t mean winter is all grey skies, rain, and no fun. Here are some last minute winter activities to get in before spring. As well all know, it’s usually not until late April or early May when the weather really start to clear up, so you might as well head up to the mountain with the family and enjoy the snow while you still can! Oftentimes, it’s sunnier on the mountain than in the city!

Hit the Slopes!

Istock

Check out our roundup here on some of the best tubing and sledding spots on Mt. Hood. There are are a ton of options including tubing at Ski Bowl and Cooper Spur, and lots of sledding hills at the Snow Bunny, Little John and White River Sno-parks.

There are also a plethora of local food options kids will love including local favorites like Sizzle Pie, Baes Fried Chicken, Cha Cha Cha, and of course, plenty of sweet treat options if you feel like splurging. Taking the Max to the game adds another fun element to the sports experience as well.

Snowshoeing, Hiking & Cross-Country Skiing

Levi Rogers

Even little kids will find a short walk in the snow to be a lot of fun. Strap on pair of snowshoes, cross-country-skis, or even crampons or micro-spikes and set off on a winter adventure. Many of these gear items are available to rent at places in Portland like Next Adventure, REI, or the Mountain Shop, and even on the way to the mountain itself in Sandy. Check out our guide here for the best places to grab snowshoe rentals and tips for beginners.

Pocket Creek Sno-Park is a great place for beginners to hike in and it's just down the road from the Teacup Nordic track. While the Teacup Nordic Track is a groomed trail specifically for cross-country skiing, Pocket Creek allows for dogs and snowshoes. Trillium Lake, one of the closest lakes to Portland, has a two mile out and back to the lake or five-mile loop with stunning views of Mt. Hood. Keep in mind it's a steep descent (and returning ascent) from the parking lot. White River Sno-Park is another terrific option. Find snow parks here.

Early Spring Hiking

If you don't mind some mud and wet trails, late Winter/early Spring is a great time to hike the Columbia River Gorge. We all know when that nice, warm weather comes the parking lots fill up quick! So venture out to the Gorge or Forest Park on a weekend for less crowded hikes. Hike to the Witch's Castle in Forest Park or Latourell or Wahclella falls for a family-friendly waterfall hike without the heat. You can also hike Dog Mountain before permits are needed on April 23.
