It's never a bad time to go to MoMa PS1, but the contemporary art museum is especially festive during its summer "Warm Up" series. On Saturdays throughout the season, the expansive courtyard is transformed into a steamy, arty dance party with DJs, music performances and food and drink. Is it a bit of a scene? Sure, but in addition to offering groovy sounds and people, the event also invites an artist or collective to create a site-specific environment for the series as part of the Young Architects Program (YAP) installation; this year's Warm Up features a colorful women canopy by Mexico City-based architecture firm Escobedo Soliz Studio. (Warning: your child may try to recreate it upon returning home.)
Get there early before the hipster crush, then escape to the A/C of the museum for some art and a snack in the cafe. And if you and the kids have never experienced James Turrell's Meeting, check it out. (The piece is not always open, but if you can get in, don't miss it!)
