Rockaway!

You may have seen the posters on the subway and thought, "What the heck is that crazy pink house?" (Well, we did.) It's Rockaway! by German artist Katharina Grosse, and another art experience brought to you by the folks at MoMA P.S. 1. The artist transformed Fort Tilden's decaying aquatics building — and some areas and trees beyond — using brightly colored spraypaint. The building was rendered structurally unsound by Hurricane Sandy, and in scheduled to be demolished later this year. The installation is a continuation of MoMA PS1’s ongoing collaborative programming alongside the Rockaway Artists Alliance that began with collaborating on rescue efforts immediately following Hurricane Sandy in 2012. (See MoMA website for directions; exact location of the piece is here.)
