Most of these are super easy to make, and kids will have a blast banging on a tin can drum, shaking DIY maracas, and making some tunes. Looking for other creative projects for kids? Sesame Street

Sesame Street is one of the best TV shows for toddlers
PBS

This classic children’s television show began in 1969 with puppets created by visionary Jim Henson. The show originally premiered on public broadcast television, but in 2015, it also moved to HBO with first-run episodes. It continues to focus on the relationships between the humans and puppets who live on the famous street.

Where it’s streaming: Max

Viewer beware—you’re in for a scare when a new Goosebumps series comes to Disney+ and Hulu this fall

Spooky season is officially upon us, and if you’re looking for some spine-tingling fun, this new Goosebumps series from A24 should be right your alley. Based on the classic book series by R.L. Stine, the show appears to be full of references to some of our favorite old stories—but with plenty of new characters and terrors to keep things interesting.

The official synopsis for the show, which is set to premiere Oct. 13 on Disney+ and Hulu, reveals that it will follow “a group of five high schoolers [who] unleash supernatural forces upon their town … [and] must work together in order to save it.”

From the trailer, we know that Justin Long stars as the town’s new English teacher, who moves into a creepy old house where someone was murdered decades before—and despite not seeming to believe in anything creepy or crawly, Long’s character promptly gets possessed by something ghostly that appears in his home’s hallowed hallways. Then, it’s up to the teens to figure out how to (maybe) save him. They’re played by Rachael Harris, Tyson Dornn, Ben Cockell, Isa Briones, Rob Huebel, Miles McKenna, Zack Morris, Ana Yi Puig, and Will Price.

That’s about all we know about the plot so far, but dedicated Goosebumps lovers will note that there are plenty of Easter eggs—both in the trailer and the official poster for the new series. The poster features Slappy, the ventriloquist’s dummy who comes to life in several of the scariest Goosebumps books. The trailer heavily features the camera from “Say Cheese and Die!,” and there’s an early jump scare thanks to a familiar face from “The Haunted Mask.” Even the creepy bird from “The Cuckoo Clock of Doom” makes an appearance.

In other words, strap in, because this is going to be one hell of a ride. Get ready to stream (and scream) on Oct. 13.

Sometimes a little lie is a harmless tool in your parenting arsenal

Parents are lying liars, and any parent who tells you they don’t occasionally lie to their kids is the biggest liar of all. Honesty might be the best policy for fully-formed adults, but the child brain doesn’t always understand reason or boundaries or parental motivation. Children basically have reptile brains; they want. They want books read to them, they want to be played with, they want to go to the park, they want to eat chocolate for breakfast—the list of wants never ends. That’s where little lies come in.

Apparently, there are some arguments that lying to a child can erode their trust in you, but to that, I say, “meh.” Sometimes a little white lie is the difference between arguing with a three-year-old for 14 minutes about why they can’t slide down the slide another 40 times, or actually making it home before you have a full-fledged public meltdown.

1. The park is closing.

When my daughter was a toddler, she loved the park. All kids love the park, but she loved the park. As in, whenever we tried to leave the park, she acted like I was separating her from a recently reunited soul mate she’d never see again. So one day, I overheard a mom at the park telling her child the park was about to close. It was high noon, the park was nowhere near closing. The child said, “Really? Okay.” No fighting, no screaming, no debating the merits of staying on a dense foam tarmac filled with throwaway toddler toys for the rest of the afternoon. Sorry honey, the park is closing!

2. This artwork is amazing!

Your toddler’s artwork isn’t good. It just isn’t. And that’s fine—it’s not supposed to be. But you better believe every time they hand you a sheet of garbage-scribble, you are going to clutch your chest and act as if you’ve just seen sketch renderings of the birth of the Mona Lisa. Some experts say lying to a child about their talents can affect their self-esteem, but this is another piece of advice that I willfully ignored when it came to raising my small children, and they turned out just fine. This artwork is amazing!

3. This (noisy) toy is broken.

Parents are expected to draw from an endless reserve of patience that simply doesn’t exist. How many times can you hear Elmo sing the ABC song before you want to pull all your hair out? This is a rhetorical question because I know the answer. It’s 17. After you hear Elmo’s little voice say, “Come on kids! Sing with me!” for the seventeenth time, something inside your very being changes. At this point, you have two options: throw Elmo out the window, or tell your toddler that he’s broken and needs to be fixed, then stash him in your closet for a few weeks until you build up the resolve to endure him singing the ABC song once again. Oh, no! Elmo is broken!

4. Santa/The Tooth Fairy/The Easter Bunny is real.

Some adults believe charging a crystal under a full moon gives it special powers, and then balk at the idea of letting kids believe a giant bunny rabbit leaves them tasty treats in the yard on Easter morning.  It’s okay to let children experience some harmless “magic” while they are still young enough to believe that unbelievable things are true. Because when we allow them to experience the unbelievable as “real,” we are also giving them permission to look for the magic in things when they are adults. BRB, I need to find my crystals. The Easter Bunny is real!

5. It’s going to rain today.

Same idea as “the park is closing,” but you reserve this for the days you don’t feel like leaving the house. It’s okay to not feel like leaving the house sometimes. Parenting is exhausting; you’ve been to Barnes & Noble story time four times already this month, you’ve been to the park every day this week, and if you just want to relax today and let your toddler entertain themselves without hearing them beg for an hour—that’s okay. Yes, you should establish boundaries with your child and teach them they are not always going to hear the word, “yes.” But sometimes you may want to opt for a little white lie to avoid a struggle. It’s going to rain today!

6. Kids can’t eat this.

Our kids take everything from us, don’t they? Sometimes you want a little special treat that is only yours. Mine is super expensive, fancy dark chocolate. Whatever yours is, small kids are pretty easy to lie to, as we’ve established above. A simple, “This isn’t for kids!” is shockingly effective. I mean, you wouldn’t give them a sip of your wine, and that’s pretty easy to explain. So think of this as an extension of that. Kids can’t eat this!

7. Sorry, we’re out of…

But what about those times when your kids are onto you? When they know cookies and ice cream and so many other things you know good parents aren’t letting their kids eat are for kids? Tell them you’re out and don’t give it another thought. Just make sure you’ve tucked that unopened package of Oreos into the back of the pantry before you do. Oh sorry, we’re all out of Oreos!

8. That’s not streaming anymore.

We don’t talk about Bruno, no, no… it was super catchy the first 432 times that you heard it, but something about 433 was the straw that broke the camel’s back. That’s when it’s time to resort to, “Oh, no! Encanto isn’t streaming anymore!” Look very shocked and disappointed when you say it. This only works if your kid can’t navigate around a streaming platform themselves, so hurry up and use it while they’re young. That’s not streaming anymore!

And for a bonus, the comments in the below post are golden. Who knew so many parents told their kids the ice cream man only plays music when he’s out of ice cream!

Will it be a camel dairy, whale watch, or island zipline day?

Fill up your gas tank and get ready to hit the road. From boardwalk amusement parks to aerial trams, these trip-worthy destinations are just a short drive from LA, and will still get home by bedtime.

Terrannea Resort

Drive Time: 31 miles from DTLA.

Why We Love It:  You don’t need to be an overnight guest to enjoy the gorgeous splendor of this upscale cliffside resort. Sprawled over 102 acres, Terranea is home to a network of walking and hiking trails that snake along the coastline to the rocky shores below (even dogs are allowed!). Non-guests are welcome to explore the grounds—and there are plenty of wide open hills and fields for littles to run around. When you’re hungry, the casual (albeit pricey) Nelson’s restaurant offers upscale bar food with a killer view. There’s also a bakery by the front entrance that sells all sorts of yummy treats the kids will want to devour. Unique day experiences are also available to non-guests, including art classes, archery, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, and a private falconry experience.

Insider’s Tip: Stop by the “Falconry Meet and Greet” every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 11-11:30 a.m. to meet Terranea’s falconer and learn about how he works with these majestic birds of prey.

Riley’s Farm & Oak Glen

Drive Time: 80 miles from DTLA

Why We Love It: The best time to visit Oak Glen is the fall, when apple season brings hordes of tourists up for a good picking. But the agricultural community of Oak Glen is also home to Riley’s Farm, which not only offers farm activities and U-pick all year long, but also Revolutionary War reenactments, including “Adventures in the Old World” Saturdays, with old-time favorites like archery, tomahawk throwing and corn husk doll-making.

Catalina Island

Elias Shankaji/Unsplash

Drive Time: Boats leave from Long Beach or San Pedro, which is about 25 miles from DTLA

Why We Love It: The boat ride alone is reason enough to cruise over to our nearest island neighbor. The 1-hour crossing is an easy way to spot whales, dolphins, or other sea life—along with a great view of the SoCal coastline. Once you’ve docked, you’ll feel miles away on this little island where bison roam free and zipline tours whisk you over scenic canyons with views of the Pacific. Rent a golf cart to explore the island on your own, or book a jeep tour to see all the off-road splendor the island has to offer.

It’s worth noting that an amazing 88 percent of Catalina Island is still wild and uninhabited, as it was set aside as protected land by the Catalina Island Conservancy. Consequently, the island has more than 62 miles of unspoiled beaches, and the longest publicly accessible stretch of undeveloped coastline left in Southern California.

Griffith Park

Venti Views/Unsplash

Drive Time: 7 miles from DTLA

Why We Love It: Be a tourist in your own town! Griffith Park has enough to offer that you can spend a whole day exploring its 4,210 acres of land (It’s one of the largest urban wilderness parks in the country!). Littles will love whirling around on the historic carousel (and they’ll equally love knowing that this is the spot Walt Disney reportedly came up with the idea for Disneyland). Tiny stargazers will definitely want to see the Griffith Observatory—especially if you have time to see a show in the Samuel Oschin Planetarium, one of the largest planetarium domes in the world. You can make a hiking day out of it by parking near the Greek Theatre and taking the one-mile trail up to the observatory; or, there’s plenty of parking at the top as well.

While you may not fit this all into a day, Griffith Park is also home to the 133-acre LA Zoo—as well as Travel Town, where kids can walk around historic trains and get a miniature train ride. Prefer to see the park on horseback? Griffith Park’s Equestrian Center (called The Los Angeles Equestrian Center) offers trail rides for all levels.

Balboa Village

Drive Time: 47 miles from DTLA.

Why We Love It: With its historic Ferris wheel, bustling eateries, and waterfront charm, Balboa Village is a perfect place to spend a family day. There are bike and boat rentals, a nautical museum, and an old-school candy store specializing in nostalgic sweets. If you have time, hop aboard the ferry to Balboa Island—you might even spot a migrating whale on the way over. And don’t miss the Balboa Fun Zone, which is like a pint-sized Santa Monica Pier with far fewer tourists.

Insider Tip: The area is home to the original frozen banana, so don’t leave without enjoying the delicious chocolate-covered treat. Both Dad’s Donut & Bakery Shop and Sugar ‘n Spice claim to be the first purveyors of the dessert on a stick, but the jury’s still out on which spot is the top banana.

Palm Springs Aerial Tramway

Drive Time: 109 miles from DTLA.

Why We Love It: This tram ride feels like a Disneyland ride, only you’re actually going somewhere (besides around and around). Boasting a two-and-a-half mile ascent on a rotating tram car, it’s thrilling enough for kids (and adults) of all ages. And then, of course, there is the destination: Once atop the peak, there are hiking trails to explore, a small history museum, and a restaurant where you can admire the view and grab a bite to eat at Forest View Restaurant—8500 feet above sea level.

Pro Tip: Dress warmly. Temps at the top are often 30-40 degrees cooler than the valley floor. It’s cold enough that even in spring, there may be a little bit of snow on top, even when the weather is warm below so check the forecast before heading up.

San Diego Safari Park

Melissa Heckscher

Drive Time: 110 miles from DTLA

Why We Love It: It’s a tad closer than the San Diego Zoo (a difference of about 30 miles) and is still one of the largest zoos in the county for seeing a whole menagerie of wildlife. Sprawling more than 1,800 acres, the park is home to more than 3,500 animals—plus loads of interesting ways to see them, including by open-air safari truck or during a “Roar & Snore” sleepover at the park. Of course, you can also just let the littles run and see the place on foot (stroller rentals are available if your kids get tired of walking).

Vasquez Rocks

Melissa Heckscher

Drive Time: 43 miles from DTLA.

Why We Love It: It’s like a natural playground! Your little bandits will love scurrying across the many prehistoric rocks that jut up from the ground across this 932-acre park near the town of Agua Dulce. The park—which was named after the infamous bandit Tiburcio Vasquez, who used these rocks to elude capture in the 1800s—features gobs of small and colossus rocks, all of which are fairly easy to climb (though we recommend climbing with them for added safety).

Insider Tip: While you’re in the area, stop by the Agua Dulce Winery (open Wed.-Sun.) to taste the locally-made wine.

Whale Watching Cruises

Drive Time: Varies, depending on where you’re departing from (Dana Point, for example, is about 60 miles from DTLA)

Why We Love It: Living on a coast is good for more than just perennial beach days. Our ocean is teeming with life waiting to be discovered—and taking the kids out for a few hours on the waves means they might get that amazing thrill of spotting migrating whales—plus the resident sea lions, seals, and dolphins that make SoCal waters their year-round home.

When to go: Grey whale season runs from Dec. through Apr.; Blue whale season runs May through Nov.

There are several whale-watching outfits leaving out of LA-area harbors, including larger tour operators like Harbor Breeze Cruises and LA Waterfront, which offer two-story boats for $45 a person (if you book online you’ll save some money!). Or, if you want a more intimate experience, companies such as Captain Dave’s and Newport Coastal Adventures out of Dana Point and Newport Beach offer private trips if you’re willing to pay for the privacy; these tours range from about $71 per person for a Zodiac (up to 20 passengers) to $398 for a private charter (up to 6 people).

We have a few thoughts on push presents.

If you haven’t heard of the idea of a “push present”, get this: the concept might actually be centuries old. The Indian ritual of godh bharai is similar to a baby shower, although in this case, instead of the typical bottles and baby swing, the expecting mom is lavished with gifts and cash (um, yes please). To absolutely no one’s surprise, celebrity culture has increased the push present’s popularity. Kristin Cavallari was treated to a Birkin Bag in 2012, courtesy of now-hubby Jay Cutler. Jay-Z gifted Beyoncé a blue diamond worth $35K (apparently, Jays give solid presents).

On the flip side, some people aren’t big fans of the concept. We’ve heard that the baby is (obviously) the best gift already, so if you’re in the “nope” camp, we get it. That said, many believe that new moms should have whatever they want. We can’t really argue that, either.

Our take? If you or your partner is Team Push Present, we have some excellent ideas (though we skipped the Birkin Bag thing because…wow). Not into the idea? Consider just making sure your favorite new mom is as supported as possible—cooking, cleaning, watching the little one while she gets a much-needed shower. Actually, we have a little experience in  New Mom Territory and would highly suggest doing that, regardless of gift-giving. New mom yourself? You have all the permission in the world to pick yourself up something from our (awesome) list below. Or link your partner for a little hint-dropping.
