These Vegas hotels offer water parks, animal encounters, and suites for families

Sin City is not as devious as it used to be. Although the pool parties and casinos have their place, Las Vegas offers a wide range of accommodations, activities, and events for every traveler—even the smallest ones. From magical animal encounters to relaxing lazy rivers, Las Vegas has everything you need for a family getaway. These hotels offer kids’ clubs, massive suites, and waterfalls. Get ready for your next family vacation to Vegas!

The Mirage | Las Vegas

Located on the south end of the strip, when this hotel opened in 1989, it was one of the first to offer a full-service resort experience as opposed to the familiar casino/hotel combination. Their heated swimming pool is open year-round, surrounded by luscious palm trees, tranquil waterfalls, and inviting hot tubs for lounging. You can also catch the trademark show, Love, a unique Cirque de Soleil show set to the iconic tunes of The Beatles.

What’s cool for kids: Three times a day, fire, smoke, and lava erupt from The Volcano in front of The Mirage, set to the music of Zakir Hussain and The Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart. The best part of The Mirage is Siegfried & Roy’s Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat. Since 1990, the magical pair has housed white lions and tigers, as well as bottlenose dolphins. A visit here is unique, educational, and definitely unforgettable.

Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino | Las Vegas

Mandalay Bay is at the most southern end of the strip, so it tends to be a bit quieter than other hotels. Some may say that this is the best pool on the strip, with 11 acres of refreshing blue spread over four inviting pools in the middle of the desert. Families can splash in a wave pool, float down a lazy river, or relax on a sun lounger. Later, head to Shark Reef aquarium where you can check out real-life turtles, rays, sharks, and more.

What’s cool for kids: Who doesn’t love building sandcastles and burying their bodies in the sand? With over 2,700 tons of sand, the man-made beach at Mandalay Bay is perfect for little ones (and their parents) looking to expel some energy.

After a day of drop-offs, pick-ups, play time, and general kiddo chaos, going out and treating yourself to a nice meal out can seem more like a dream than a reality. Will the kids enjoy their meal? Will they refuse to eat what’s in front of them? Will you spend more time stressing about the bill than actually enjoying your time together? Put your worries away. A place that's boiling over with positive energy and a focus on community building. Didn’t bring your bikes? No worries—Tahoe Bike Company has you covered! With beach cruisers, surreys and mountain bikes for rent, your crew will be ready to cruise on the miles of bike path around the lake.

Hiking
Nearby Van Sickle Bi-State Park has several trails varying in length but our favorite trail, the Tahoe Rim Trail, starts outside the park. With a small parking lot just for this trailhead, a short ⅓ of a mile hike brings you to a vista with unobstructed, sweeping views of the lake. Continue up the trail and follow signs for the waterfall for another mile where a bridge will cross over the waterfall.

Good to know: Coming from the pancake-flat Bay Area to about 5600 feet in elevation means it's important for families to hydrate frequently and slow down with strenuous activity. Please use wise judgment and bring hats, sunglasses and plenty of water for the littles.

Ice skating
Strap on those ice skates and enjoy South Lake Tahoe’s only outdoor ice skating rink, opening November 1.

Family portrait
Why not have those holiday card photos taken with the gorgeous lake as a backdrop? Old TimePhoto can procure the perfect photo and even dress your family in authentic period costumes if you’d like!

To Eat

MacDuff’s Pub
Frequented by locals and housed in a charming cottage, MacDuff’s will cook the fish the kids caught and turn it into a delectable dinner. MacDuff’s also raises the bar on standard pub fare with truffle mac and cheese and an amazing beet salad. Bonus: go early and grab one of four igloo-like dining pods that will delight the kids to no end!

Casey’s
Named after a beloved family dog that lived to 23, Casey’s is a family-friendly tavern tucked away from the main tourist drag and serves up a little bit of everything from burgers and pizza to Thai lettuce wraps and chicken fried steak which means there’s something for everyone!

Fire+Ice
At Fire+Ice, kids will love creating their own meals! This interactive dining experience lets kids choose their own proteins and veggies, top it with their choice of sauce then watch a chef grill it up in front of them. The best part? It is all-you-can-eat so all those growing kids leave satisfied!

Azul
Taco time! This California-style Latin kitchen will serve up the very best of Tahoe’s tacos, burritos and enchiladas along with craft cocktails to wash it all down!

Baked Bear
Satisfy your family’s sweet tooth with a stop at the Baked Bear where custom cookie ice cream sandwiches are the specialty! The Bear Batter ice cream was a hit for us— blue tongues included!

Where to Sleep

Fall Bucket List: 33 Autumnal Activities for Families

Fall Road Trips from the Bay Area

Dreaming of the day your kiddies are old enough to take them travelling internationally? The good news is that the Bay Area has one of the most diverse food scenes anywhere, and it’s constantly growing and branching out. You don’t have to settle for takeout Chinese or plain spaghetti and meatballs when there’s so many restaurants eager to introduce you to the specialties of their country’s cuisine. Here are some of our favorite restaurants that let you take a culinary world tour and also welcome the kids as well.

Aurum Indian Bistro | Los Altos

Hardy Wilson

Families looking for Indian food with a modern flair should order up some delivery from Aurum Indian Bistro in downtown Los Altos. The restaurant is a joint project from Chef Manish Tyagi, formerly the Executive Chef of August (1) Five in San Francisco, and Anupam Bhatia, owner of Broadway Masala in Redwood City. You'll find the menu includes favorites like saag paneer, lamb biryani and naan, along with unique fusion options like the pulled pork thepla taco. Our kid tasters loved the RaGa Kofta, the Chorizo & Bacon Kulcha and of course, the Butter Chicken (it was everyone's favorite). Don't skip out on dessert as the Heaven Can Wait Toffee Pudding was our favorite.

Din Tai Fung

Din Tai Fung xiaolongbao
Anita Chu

Din Tai Fung, one of the most famous restaurant franchises in Asia, is known for their eastern Chinese cuisine and especially their soup dumplings, called xiaolongbao. The good news is along with the dumplings, much of their menu is kid-friendly, including a wide selection of fried rice and noodles. The tough news is Din Tai Fung’s first Bay Area outpost in Valley Fair is super popular; they accept limited reservations for parties of up to four people, or arrive early before the lines get too long.

Wursthall

Wursthall San Mateo

A bierhaus may not sound like the most family friendly place, but Wursthall’s modern take on a beer hall welcomes kids with their own menu that features kinderwurst (hot dog) and grilled cheese with apple juice or milk. The adult menu offers updated German cuisine, some with a Korean twist; this really is a beer hall Bay Area-style. Parents, enjoy the excellent beer and bratwurst selection and don’t overlook the chicken schnitzel or the crispy fried potatoes.

It’s great fun and kids love picking out what to cook. Goku is an all-you-can-eat style BBQ, so bring your appetite. Kids under four eat free.

Limon Rotisserie

Although many equate Peru with a land of adventure, their food is amazingly accessible and appealing, like roast chicken, lomo saltado (stir fried beef with fries and rice), and ceviche. Limon provides a great overview of Peruvian cuisine and kids will be as big a fan of their signature rotisserie chicken as you. Everything is served family style, so it’s a great place for a casual family meal.

Dim sum houses can seem noisy and overwhelming to the uninitiated, but once you’ve got the ordering process down and you know your favorite dishes it’s a fantastic way to experience Cantonese cuisine. Dragon Beaux has friendly service and all the dim sum classics, plus creative versions of them like the five color xialongbao (soup dumplings), sea bass dumplings and egg yolk “lava” buns. Achilles offers delicious Mediterranean food customized to your taste. The menu has endless options: choose your protein, then choose if you want it on a plate, in a wrap, or a pita pocket. Then you can get crazy with the sides, which include sauces like tahini and tzatziki, veggies, hummus, etc. Everything is super fresh and the workers are very helpful in explaining everything. Kids will love the beef gyro or chicken shawarma, and watching the workers carve them off the vertical rotisseries.

This longtime beloved San Francisco pop-up has made a permanent home in Oakland, so now you can more easily get to their version of homey Filipino cuisine. The Shanghai lumpia (pork spring rolls), lechon (pork belly) and adobo fried rice are big favorites, while the homemade spam with rice and fried egg will be a hit with the kiddies. PLAJ

Kate Loweth

Scandinavian cuisine is particularly family-friendly and we love the homey atmosphere that you find at Pläj. Located within walking distance of the Civic Center, Pläj is a great spot for your pre- or post-theater meal when everyone's all dressed up. We love the smoked fish croquettes and chicken liver more, while kids will definitely want to dig in to the Swedish meatballs with lingonberry jam. On Sundays in December you can enjoy their traditional julbord meal. If you head up to Petaluma, don't miss their more casual sister restaurant, Stockhome (their Swedish candy selection is epic!).

Cafe Zoetroppe

Kate Loweth

Named for Francis Coppola's venerable production company, American Zoetrope, Cafe Zoetrope is located in the majestic Sentinel Building, a San Francisco historic landmark in the heart of North Beach. We love it for it's quirky decor, small tables and totally kid-friendly dining. You can't go wrong with the Pizza Sofia (topped with arugula, prosciutto and shaved parmesan) and the spaghetti and meatballs will make any kid (or adult) both full and happy.

Best Themed Restaurants for an Epic Night on the Town

Over 50 Bay Area Restaurants Where Kids Eat Freel

When Royal Caribbean launched the Symphony of the Seas in March of 2018, it officially launched the biggest cruise ship in the world. Playing host to over 6500 passengers, she’s currently cruising the Mediterranean Sea before making her way to the Caribbean in November. We had the opportunity to explore this impressive vessel and came back with plenty to report. If you’re considering a cruise soon, or just want to know what the biggest ship in the world has to offer, keep reading. Believe us when we say there’s something for everyone on board.

The Stats

Featuring over 17 floors with 2,759 staterooms (6,680 guest capacity total!), there are seven different neighborhoods to explore, including our family-friendly picks—Central Park, the Boardwalk, the Youth Zone and the Sports and Pool Zone.

Central Park has open-air access that brings in a welcomed sea breeze, along with plenty of foliage, live music and several specialty restaurants: Chops Grille, Jamie’s Italian, Vintages and 150 Central Park.

The Boardwalk is filled with kid-centric fun, like the carousel, arcade, Sugar Beach candy store and Johnny Rockets diner, and it’s the home to the outdoor aquatic theater, where you can find live shows, outdoor movies and more.

The Youth Zone is where all the kids’ clubs are located. There’s even a techy-looking science lab, an art studio and a theater, all just for the kids. There’s also an indoor playground where parents can come to let their kids burn off steam, but it does require supervision at all times unless you drop your kiddos off in the kids club. The childcare staff is experienced, and the groups are divided by age: babies and toddlers (they have napping areas and will provide you an itinerary of what your tyke did all day), Aquanauts (3-5), Explorers (6-8) and Voyagers (9-11). There’s even a tweens and teens program for kids ages 12-17. The kids club is open free of charge until 10 p.m., and for anyone wanting a later evening (12 p.m.), there’s a small hourly charge.

The Sports and Pool Zone is at the top of the ship and offers three waterslides, three pools, a splash zone, mini golf, zip lining, rock climbing, the Abyss (a 10-story dry slide), basketball court and the FlowRider wave zones.

The Food

Cruises, after all, are known for their all-you-can-eat spreads, and Symphony of the Seas doesn’t disappoint. From the three-level main dining room (the lunch salad bar is a hidden gem!) with excellent service and impressive dinner menu and the morning fare at the Solarium Bistro to Park Cafe for hot-pressed sandwiches or fresh-prep salads and El Loco Fresh, located near the Sports and Pool Zone, there’s a food type for every appetite.

Insider tip: Don’t forget to look for the soft-serve ice cream cone bars in the Pool the Sports Zone.

If you opt to purchase a specialty dining package, you can choose from nine different restaurants including breakfast at Johnny Rocket’s, raw oysters and family-style seafood dinners at Hooked Seafood, truffle pasta from Jamie’s Italian, or elegant steak dinners with good wine at Chops Grille.

Our best-bet pick for specialty dining on board the Symphony of the Seas is Wonderland: where your dinner and evening entertainment intertwine. From the moment you enter the restaurant, which is filled with mismatched furniture (one dinner chair was an upside-down sofa) nothing is what it seems. The mixologist serves up creative drinks like Chesire Cat cosmos, the menus magically appear, and there’s a continuous flow of things that engage all the senses: They serve imaginative cuisine at Wonderland, which means you’ll be tasting things like liquid lobster for starters and meringue mushrooms for dessert.

Good to know: Be sure to make a reservation as soon as your cruise begins: current waiting lists are around 60 groups.

What to Do

Whether you choose to head out on an excursion, explore the port town or just stay on board, there’s an endless array of activities for guests while cruising the Symphony of the Seas.

Take an Excursion

When you board the ship, you’ll be given a package filled with all the different excursions that are available while you’re cruising. There’s everything from hikes and bikes rides to beach transfers and foodie destinations.

Plan on taking the kids? Be sure to look for the family icon in the shore excursion booklet. For example, the European cruise offers a pizza making academy in Sorrento, Italy. You’ll get a lesson from the pros, get to eat your creations and then stroll through the alley of Sorrento—a charming seaside village in Southern Italy.

Want to leave the kids on the ship? With all the fun excursions for adults, it’s easy to leave the kids on board in kids club while you explore with your partner. Anything with long travel times, thrills or lots of walking might be better solo or only with older kids, like in the Bahamas, where you’ll have the chance to hike Mount Liamuiga.

Stay on the Ship

Each morning you’ll receive a daily planner at your door, which details the port stop for the day, the weather forecast, the big events or deals that are happening, and an hourly rundown of everything you can do aboard the Symphony of the Seas. Want to play laser tag? Head for Deck 4. Feel like climbing the walls? Head for the back of Deck 7. There are movie nights, family mini golf competitions, face painting, family bingo, sushi-making classes, family science labs, dance classes, balloon twisting, and family basketball tournaments. Plan your own family game night in the card room, enjoy the open ice skating times, or just lay low with a cruise-approved Pina Colada on of the hundreds of lounge chairs available.

Insider tip: Be sure to enter (err … ride) the Abyss, which, at 10 stories high, is the tallest slide at sea.

You can choose from a different live show every night: high-diving thrills in the AquaTheater, see the history of aviation in reverse in Flight … Dare to Dream, at the Royal Theater, or ice skating, or follow an ice-skating, time-traveling jewel thief in 1977.

The Rooms

For anyone who wants to splurge, there’s the four-room Family Villa Suite or the Ultimate Family Suite (complete with slide, floor to ceiling LEGO wall and air hockey table for starters!) on level 17. There is also a whole range of staterooms to choose from: ocean-view balcony family rooms, two-room lofts, AquaTheater Suites, interior balcony suites and more.

The Details

The Symphony of the Seas will be cruising in the Mediterranean Sea until November 2018. Her 2018-2019 Caribbean cruise dates and locations can be found here. Rates start at $560 per person.

How lucky are we that the waterpark capital of the world (yes, world!) is just three hours from Chicago? No need to wait a whole year for summer to take a dip, this kid-tastic destination is hopping year-round. You won’t whiz down an outdoor water slide or bask in the sun on a lazy river, but the Wisconsin Dells still has plenty to offer. Here’s the scoop on where to stay, eat, play and be entertained on the cool weather vacay you know you need.

photo: Chula Vista Resort

STAY
You’ll feel like you’re in Mexico with palm trees towering over the water slides at Chula Vista Resort (2501 River Rd., 855-388-4782 or chulavistaresort.com), which we’re assuming is just fine with you. The water is heated to a cozy level, greenery surrounds you at every turn and indoor structures are modeled after Mayan temples. Relaxed yet? Chula Vista is one of the more toddler-friendly waterpark resorts in the Dells (its oversized wading pool has mini tipping buckets and gentle geysers). But, they also kept the more adventurous in mind with an uphill water roller coaster.

Passes to the waterpark are included in your night’s stay. For an extra fee you can play games in the onsite arcade and catch a flick in the 4-D movie theater. Chula Vista’s restaurants range from a chop house to a casual buffet breakfast spot, and there are also waterpark-side snacks. Depending on how many people you’re traveling with, you can pick from hotel rooms, suites, condos or villas that overlook the Wisconsin River.

On the other side of town, other lodging options with big-time indoor waterparks include Kalahari Resort, Wilderness Hotel & Golf Resort and Great Wolf Lodge. Kalahari has a safari theme (tigers are known to camp out in the lobby in an enclosed area). Wilderness Hotel has a massive indoor amusement park with go-karting, laser tag and bumper boats. And Great Wolf Lodge caters to tiny swimmers with a four-story waterpark treehouse and lily pad walk, plus a kids’ spa.

photo: MagiQuest at Great Wolf Lodge

PLAY
Make like Harry Potter and grab a magic wand at MagiQuest (1400 Great Wolf Dr., 608-253-2222 or greatwolf.com). The indoor role-playing adventure challenges you to navigate a realistic-looking enchanted kingdom, unlocking clues and fighting virtual dragons along the way. While best suited for kids ages five and up (there is some strategic thinking involved), younger kids will appreciate the visual effects, which include animated fairies and engaging touch screens.

If fantasy and sci-fi is your thing, head deeper into downtown Dells for Wizard Quest (105 Broadway, 608-254-2184 or wizardquest.com), a digitally-interactive game played in a real-life massive labyrinth; it was all developed by a local Dells family. Your mission is to answer riddles and navigate secret passages to unlock imprisoned wizards, while staying on your guard for the minions that will try to stop you in your tracks.

photo: Knuckleheads

Give your body a rest and exercise your brain by heading to a whopper of an amusement park: Knuckleheads (150 Gasser Rd., 608-254-7332 or knuckleheadspark.com). You’ll burn off energy on the indoor ropes course, bumper cars, bowling lanes, 4-D roller coaster and other whirly-twirlies. Their indoor trampoline park has wall-to-wall trampolines. If your tiny bouncer isn’t ready for high-intensity jumping, check out the “jumping pillow,” where they can hop in a more contained environment.

How about spending the day learning how stuff works? Get those noggins turning with science and robot fun at Tommy Bartlett’s Exploratory (560 Wisconsin Dells Pkwy., 608-254-2525 or tommybartlett.com). It’s the only place on earth where you can see and jump right into an authentic Russian Space Station MIR core module (this was the operational nerve center for space explorers living on the MIR Space Station). Another highlight is the Van De Graaff Generator – Bridge of Fire exhibit, a static electricity generator built by Dr. Robert J. Van de Graaff in the early 1940s. Your hair will stand on end as you pick up electro charges from the generator, which has the power of a thundercloud! Daredevils big and small can also feel the thrill of riding a bicycle across a tightrope.

Cap off the fun with a photo memory at Old Abe’s Old Time Portraits (217 Broadway Ave., 608-254-5663, oldabes.com). This is your family’s chance to step back in time and capture an image of what you would’ve looked like as visitors aboard the Titanic, as Wild West cowboys and gals or immigrants to 1870’s Wisconsin. A large variety of old-time sets and a huge selection of costumes make it easier than ever to time travel when the DeLorean is in the shop.

photo: Paul Bunyan’s Cook Shanty

EAT
It’s impossible to miss Paul Bunyan’s Cook Shanty (411 Highway 13, 608-254-8717 or dellspaulbunyans.com) with huge statues of Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox standing tall to greet you at the entrance of this Dells cult classic. You’ll find meals fit for a lumberjack with all-you-can-eat, family-style feasts served in a cabin that would look right at home in the Wisconsin northwoods. If you don’t have time for a sit-down meal, be sure to at least stop in for sugar donuts and a trip to their gift shop, where you can buy wilderness-inspired loot (think slingshots and fur caps). In order to prep for the busy summer season and spend time with family, Paul Bunyan’s is closed mid-October through March, so it’s only an option if you plan a late winter/early spring getaway.

photo: Buffalo Phil’s

You’ve probably noshed at a restaurant where food arrives at your table via mini train, but there’s nothing quite like Buffalo Phil’s (150 Gasser Rd., 608-254-7300 or buffalophilsgrille.com). Mini locomotives circle overhead and table-side train service chugs over Lil’ Buckaroo meals (pasta, chicken, burgers), plus surprise toys to play with while you wait. If there’s a line to snag a table to experience this train mania, amuse yourself on the ride-on horse or sit atop the taxidermy buffalo for a photo opp. Buffalo Phil’s is attached to Knuckleheads, and you could easily spend an afternoon bopping between the two.

Head to the old-school House of Embers (935 Wisconsin Dells Pkwy., 608-253-6411, houseofembers.com) for a Wisconsin Supper Club style feast. BBQ baby back ribs are the house specialty, but if you happen to be visiting on a Friday, the unbeatable Friday night fish fry is a don’t-miss.

The Dells has other dining options that are less overtly kid-focused and may appeal to more gourmet tastes. On the downtown strip, MACS (208 Broadway, 608-678-2300 or macandcheeseshop.com) serves inventive takes on mac ‘n’ cheese, including Popeye Mac (provolone, mozzarella, spinach, sauteed onions and mushrooms) and Chicken Bacon Ranch Mac (cheddar, mozzarella, chicken, bacon, ranch).

EXPLORE
When the weather is right, hit the outdoors and trade water slides for ski slopes at Cascade Mountain (W10441 Cascade Mountain Rd., Portage, 608-742-5588 or cascademountain.com), located 15 minutes from downtown Dells. Kids ages 4-10 can participate in the Cascade Kids program to learn the snowy ropes of snowboarding and skiing. You’ll also find a tubing hill that measures 900 feet long, with a surface lift that zips you right back up for more downhill fun. Tubes are provided and no experience is required.

Take your pick between 15 downhill runs that satisfy the needs of beginners to more seasoned black diamond riders at Christmas Mountain Village (S944 Christmas Mountain Rd., 608-253-1000 or christmasmountainvillage.com). Their trails are perfect for cross-country skiing and there’s also tubing, for more slippery fun.

Spend an evening or afternoon bowling at Chalet Lanes (740 Elm St., 608-254-8727, chaletlanes.com), a family fun center that features awesome rock & bowl lanes complete with colorful lights, a mega sound system and even a fog machine. Automatic scoring and bumper bowling make this an easy pick for family fun.

Introduce your kids to the magic of live performances at Palace Theater (564 Wisconsin Dells Parkway South, 608-253-4000 or dellspalace.com). Its wholesome entertainment focuses on Broadway shows and Disney classics.
