12 Awesome Gifts for Any New or Expecting Mom

Your friend is expecting for the second (or third or fourth) time. What do you get the mom-to-be who already has all the baby basics? Read on to find some great gifts even the most experienced expectant mom will appreciate.

1. Gift Certificate for Babysitting
More kids means Mom will soon have even less time for herself than she had before. Give her a gift she will think is priceless: a few hours to herself. Prepay a sitter you know she has used before or one you know and trust. Encourage the mom-to-be not to wait to use the sitter and to use the time to treat herself, or just to take a nap, shower by herself, answer emails or decompress without having to worry about anyone else’s needs for an hour or two.

2. Upgraded Stroller
Chances are the mom-to-be already has just about everything she needs, but she may not have everything she wants. A baby sprinkle is the perfect time to pamper her with an upgrade in gear. Although these may come with a big price tag, guests can chip in to buy a group gift she’ll love, like a new strolle. For the mama who needs a double stroller, you can’t go wrong with the easy-to-push Britax B-Lively Double Stroller ($429.99), which has all the bells and whistles like extra storage, independently reclining seats and a quick fold that makes it easy to take this stroller on the go. Moms who need a single stroller will adore one of the best luxury strollers on the market. The Joolz Hub ($699) pushes easily even over uneven sidewalks, can be maneuvered with one hand, has six different positions for baby’s comfort, and sports an extra-large canopy. It can accommodate kids up to 50 pounds so it will last through the preschool years. Plus, its head-turning looks will make mom happy every time she goes for a stroll.

3. A Dream Diaper Bag
A diaper bag may be a parent’s most used accessory. It goes everywhere the baby goes, from the car to the mall and trips to Grandma’s house. That means every mom should have the diaper bag she deserves. The Paperclip Willow ($199) has a built-in changing station for moms obsessed with cleanliness, pockets galore, and it looks more like a cute backpack than a diaper bag. This is a great splurge for a baby sprinkle group gift. As a bonus, it’s made from recycled material so mom can rest easy knowing she being eco-conscious. Check out more of our favorite diaper bags.

4. Time-Saving Gadget She Didn’t Know She Needed
Find something clever that will make mom’s life a lot easier, like the Uber Mini Fridge ($66.04). This fridge is even smaller than the one she had in her dorm room, but it’s the perfect size for everything from storing pumped milk to keeping some cold water (or something more grown-up) in the nursery. This mini fridge can even be used in the car with the included car charger, making it an ideal choice for working moms who pump at the office. Or, she might not realize she needs the magic of an infrared thermometer, like this one from TruMed ($69.99) that will take her children’s temperature in no time flat without the need to hold a thermometer under baby’s arm or place it somewhere even less pleasant.

For something practical that will save her time well through the toddler years, treat her to a 3-in-1 Sterilizer and Dryer by Coral UV ($143.99). With just a touch of a button, this box provides the magic of sterilizing everything from bottles and grimy cell phones to toys that toddlers drop on the ground in 10 minutes flat. Any busy mom will appreciate being able to ditch bleach wipes and boiling water for the ease of dropping just about anything into a child-safe box.

5. A Personalized Gift
Once the proud parents are on to baby number two or more, the new bundle of joy is bound to get a lot of hand-me-downs. Make sure the new little one has something of their own with a baby box from Rock A Box Baby that can be personalized with a name or monogram. These boxes start at $25, but thanks to the quality of the box and the items inside,it looks much more expensive.

6. A Baby Carrier
A baby carrier may not actually give moms an extra pair of hands, but the right one can feel like it. The Cybex Yema baby carrier ($199.95) is not only stylish, it can be used for newborns through toddler age. It can also be worn on the front, back or side. This carrier is a mix of a structured carrier and wrap that is easy to use. The front has a unique design that is softer in the middle and firmer on the sides, giving baby a snug, secure place to nap and observe the world.

photo: Simply Organic Bamboo

7. Soft Throw Blanket
Chances are that Mom got plenty of baby blankets at her baby shower, but her baby sprinkle is the perfect time to give her a blanket that is big enough for and her babies to snuggle under together. A Simply Organic Bamboo Throw Blanket ($79) is ultra-soft, so it’s gentle enough for baby’s skin but big enough to keep Mom cozy too. Plus, it comes beautifully packaged and tied with a ribbon, so it’s ready to give right out of the box.

photo: Countdown to Mama

8. A Collection of Handy Gifts
This advent calendar-style box for expectant moms keeps on giving after the party is over. Every day for 14 days, the mom-to-be opens one of the drawers in the Countdown to Mama ($185) gift chest to reveal something special for her or the baby. Gifts include a water bottle, rose gold necklace, a nursing cover, washable nursing pads, milestone stickers, lotions and a gender-neutral onesie with matching headband for Mom. The gift trunk comes wrapped in a pretty, reusable bag. This makes a great group gift that is actually fourteen gifts in one.

9. Mommy & Me Pajamas
A Mom & Me Snuggle Trunk from Elephant Organics ($100-$125) is a great gift for the mom who wants something soft and new to wear in the hospital or for those first photos at home. These gift boxes come with matching outfits for Mom & baby, plus some other items of your choice. As a bonus, many styles also come in toddler sizes. That means you can add a pair of PJs so big sibling does not feel left out.

10. Spa Day
Growing a tiny human and carrying it around 24/7 is incredibleand exhausting. Moms-to-be often experience aches in muscles they didn’t even know they had. Make her a little more comfortable by treating her to a prenatal or postnatal massage. While pregnant, some moms also forego things they loved before getting pregnant, like dyeing their hair or getting a manicure. Go in with a group and treat her to a full day of pampering that she can look forward to after the baby is born.

photo: JaneCare

11. At-Home Care Kit
For the mom who can’t, or doesn’t want to, leave the house, you can bring the spa experience to her with a care kit. The PamperHer kit from JaneCare ($59.99) has everything Mom needs to get her through ta tough day with bath bombs, body butter, a stress-relief roll-on, and affirmation cards to remind her she is doing a great job.

12. Cleaning Service
No new mom has enough time to clean, yet the cleaning must get done. A gift that will leave her speechless is a phone number she can call to arrange for cleaning fairies to come to come to her house and leave it sparkling.

photo: Amazon

13. Kindle Paperwhite
New moms spend a lot of time holding the baby with one arm and unsure what to do with the other arm. The perfect solution is a Kindle Paperwhite that she can hold with one hand and read to her heart’s content. The Kindle Paperwhite is lighter than previous versions and can be read silently in complete darkness, so it’s perfect for not just for late nights with a baby but also with a toddler who absolutely needs Mom to help them fall asleep.

photo: Google

14. Google Nest Hub
The Google Nest Hub is a device that can do everything from play Netflix or lullabies to keep an eye on a sleeping baby or rambunctious older sibling. When all else fails, Mom can ask her Google Nest for ideas on what to make for dinner when she is eating for two or for secrets to getting the baby to sleep. Plus, it’s small enough to move from room to room. The Google Nest can also act as a babysitter for an older sibling who can just ask the device to tell a story or start a round of freeze-tag.

15. A Night Nurse
No matter how many kids the new mom has already, sleep will undoubtedly remain elusive with a newborn. Give her the gift of one night of uninterrupted sleep with a postnatal night nurse and she will remember your kindness forever. She may decide to have a date night, but chances are greater she will relish in sleeping a solid eight to ten and wake up a new woman.

New Car Seat Device Seeks to Improve Infant Safety

Pregnancy, New Mom & Baby Trends That Will Dominate in 2020

The Bump. Babylist. MyRegistry.com. Baby registries are the ultimate checklist to ensure new moms have all the necessities (and then some) to care for their newborn. Sure, they make it super easy for loved ones to buy baby gifts, but if you’ve ever had a baby yourself, you know firsthand how little material things you truly need with an infant. Sure, you need a changing pad and copious amounts of diapers and wipes, but how many onesies does one baby really need? Once you’ve got the big-ticket items secured, like your car seat and stroller, the greatest thing that someone needs is help!

Now I don’t know of any baby registries that list help or more accurately, haaaalp!, as an option and it’s really, really hard for most new moms to ask for it. When you’re in that foggy postpartum delirium it’s nearly impossible to articulate what you really need even when your household is falling apart. So if you’ve got a friend who is expecting, here are a few ways to ‘think outside the registry box’ and shower her in a really impactful way.

  • Hire a housecleaner. Give your friend the gift of a sparkling clean house complete with a polish and shine. She is going to be consumed with keeping her tiny human alive and trying to ‘nap when her baby naps’, meanwhile her kitchen and bathroom have become no man’s land. Find someone trusted in her neighborhood and schedule it a few weeks after her due date. She will be forever grateful.

  • Pay for a dog walking service. Does your friend have a fur baby? Most doggies take the back seat once the new baby arrives and I’m not talking about car rides. Find a friendly dog walking service and schedule a few visits for their pup to be loved on, walked, and played with. Both parties will be soooo happy.

  • Pay for a laundry service. Could you imagine someone else doing your laundry for a few weeks? #laundrygoals. Babies produce an insane amount of laundry considering their clothes are one-tenth the size of ours and when you include burp cloths and clothes with milk stains, we’ve got a problem Houston. No one wants their dear friend doing their laundry. Pay a stranger and stay anonymously messy.

  • Buy a three-month membership for a fitness app. Find one that has some postnatal yoga or pilates and give the gift of movement. This is especially perfect if your friend is having a winter baby. It’s nearly impossible to make it to the gym with a newborn even if you had the energy. Having some exercise options at her fingertips would be a beautiful, low-commitment option to get her happiness endorphins flowing again.

  • Now for the fun one. Give your GF a mani/pedi gift card to a nearby salon! This way she can feel like a queen again and have her nails be on point for those precious newborn pics.

Preparing for a new baby can be an overwhelming time. Deciding what you need and what to add to that baby registry isn’t always easy. A new survey reveals some insights into how expectant parents build their baby registries.

Using data collected on more than 300,000 gift givers Babylist, a universal baby registry service, has compiled a report on buying habits of expectant parents and baby gift givers.  The survey revealed that while 50 percent of items registered for are $20 or less, the average amount spent by gift givers is about $130. Grandparents are the most likely to splurge on gifts, versus other family and friends who are more budget conscious.

photo: Vidal Baleilo via Pexels

When selecting a gift, most prioritized practicality over sentimentality, with 44 percent wanting to gift something needed versus just 14 percent wanting to give a gift that is personal and thoughtful. One quarter of gift givers purchased something off registry to bundle with items on the list.

The data also revealed trends in registry items, with several selections on the rise in popularity. Between 2017 and 2018 baby bottles on registries increased by 11 percent, followed by baby monitors with a nine percent increase and strollers with an eight percent increase.

Most baby registries are created during the second trimester, though only 11 percent say they feel like they’ve researched products and feel prepared. On average Babylist users spend a whopping 40 hours building their registries. Fifty-two percent of what registrants add to their lists end up getting deleted.

5 Ways to Support a Friend Returning to Work After Maternity Leave

Photo: Pixabay

Returning to work after maternity leave is an exciting time for some, but a stressful and sad time for others.  I remember my first day back to work after maternity leave.  I took my son to the sitter’s house, got into my car and bawled like a baby. While I liked my team and was happy to be returning to my corporate strategy role, I was heartbroken to be leaving my little guy with someone else.

Fast forward to today and I’ve successfully navigated my own maternity leaves, coached clients returning from leave and supported countless friends through the process.  While there are many things you can do to support a friend who’s returning to work, there are five key things that will make a big difference for her.

1. Offer to help around her house.

She may not be able to to envision what she needs, but trust me, the transition from being home with baby to going back to the office is tough.  If she’s like most moms on leave, she’s doing the lion’s share of the household duties, including cooking, laundry, and running errands.  By the end of maternity leave, many moms have developed a new set of habits and routines that are predicated on her being home and having control over her schedule.  Showering, doing laundry or quickly preparing a meal while the baby is napping have become part of her routine.

A rude awakening comes on that first day back to work.  Gone are the days of taking a shower at noon or a nap at 4 pm if she had a rough night with the baby.  Now, she’s having to get up, get herself work ready, get the baby ready for a sitter or daycare and get out of the door early in the morning. She likely returns home that evening tired and desperate to spend some quality time bathing and bonding with her baby before the little one heads to bed.  The flexibility she had during maternity leave has disappeared over night.  Offer to stock groceries in the house, bring over prepared meals, process some laundry or send a cleaning service.

2. Be a good listener.

Returning to work is often fraught with emotions. She is simultaneously recalibrating the division of labor with her spouse or partner, spending less time with her baby and juggling being a mom with her work responsibilities.  Each of these can be tough.  She may not ask for help, but will appreciate it.  Call to check on her and listen. She will need to vent at times and process emotions.  Offer advice where you can, but what’s more important is that you are there for her.

3. Give her small gifts to take to work.

Small gifts to brighten her space and make her feel special are appreciated. Framed pictures of her baby for her desk, accessories to make pumping at work easier or flowers and an encouraging note can bring her joy.  Once the baby shower has passed and after friends have brought the new baby gifts, the attention that the family — and especially the mom — receives will dwindle.  Small tokens of support and appreciation will be unexpected and go a long way.

4. Buy, loan and recommend work clothes.

If she has to wear professional clothes to work, getting back into her work clothes — especially if she’s pumping — can be stressful and, for some, demoralizing.  If you have clothes you can lend her, great.  If not, researching and purchasing pump-friendly work clothes can be a game changer for her.

5. Get her out of the house.

Once the reality of juggling work and her new baby sets in, your friend may find it difficult to make time for herself.  Take her for a walk or out for coffee. She’ll appreciate the support and the break from her new routine.

Your friend’s journey to juggling working motherhood is a long and fruitful one. Being a great source of support during her early days will be remembered and appreciated for years to come.

As the largest career community for women, Fairygodboss provides millions of women with career connections, community advice and the hard-to-find intel about how companies treat women.

Every new mom knows the classic routine of having a baby shower and hoping for the best. Yes, I absolutely adore the booties my grandmother took the time to crochet—as well as enough toys to stock the shelves of FAO Schwartz. As a freelancer, though, my income fluctuates anywhere between being able to hand a few Gs to homeless people in need and dining on Ramen while watching public domain movies on YouTube in the dark.

That’s why the best baby gifts I ever received as a new mom didn’t necessarily score high in cuteness points. They did, however, rock the socks off the convenience factor. If a special woman in your life is expecting her first or even her fifth little bundle of joy, draw some inspiration from the gifts I appreciated the most before heading to that reveal party.

1. Future Financial Peace of Mind

My brother-in-law shows roughly as much emotion as your average IRS agent—it’s all about the money. While we jokingly refer to him as Scrooge every December 25, behind his gruff exterior lies the heart of a saint, albeit the Patron Saint of Fiscal Responsibility.

When I received my reveal card from him, I discovered he had opened a 529 college savings plan for my baby’s future educational expenses. Did my friends squeal and ooh and ahh? Not so much. In terms of practicality, though, my brother-in-law harnessed the power of time to compound interest and create what will become a sizable gift for my little one when the time comes to pursue a degree.

2. Tools for Diaper Duty

My friends refer to me as the plastic Nazi and I take no offense to this. When it came to deciding between disposable diapers and cloth, I chose the more environmentally friendly option.

Several friends pooled their resources to get me a diaper laundry container that neutralized odors naturally until the contents could be washed. They also hooked me up with a ton of cloth diapers in various sizes so my baby’s behind would remain comfortably swaddled.

3. Easy-to-Heat & Drink Noms

Many people treat new moms to easy-to-heat casseroles and quiches. I won’t lie: As a busy mother, the slow cooker and oven have become my best friends. Even if I had the time to cook, parenting a newborn saps me of the energy to do so.

However, the one thing I missed the most during both of my pregnancies was a nice meal paired with the right wine. I literally cried with delight when my bestie arrived after I returned home with my youngest with a gift basket loaded with delicious bubbly and the cheese, nuts and fruit to match. Pro-tip: Sipping one drink only has a negligible effect on breast milk and that first glass of wine after nine months on the wagon tastes like heaven, especially with well-aged cheddar.

4. A Therapist Visit (or 10)

Even women who don’t develop postpartum depression need to adjust to the psychological reality of having another human being 100 percent dependent upon them for care. Talk therapy doesn’t come cheap—even with health insurance coverage.

My mum did the legwork for me when I had my first. Because I returned to work less than a week after giving birth due to the fact I telecommute, she hooked me up with an online therapy program so I could reach out for help without needing to find a sitter.

5. Books, Books & More Books

I refuse to apologize for being a serious bookworm. It’s in my blood. I distinctly remember the day my mum took my pre-K self to summer library, but then left me waiting to read a Curious George book while she cooked dinner. She let a potful of noodles boil to mush when I grew impatient and started loudly reading, “The man with the big, yellow hat …”

I read to both my babies in the womb and while I can’t guarantee they’ll inherit my appreciation of quiet rainy days spent on a cozy window seat with a gripping novel, I can make sure they’re ready for school. Gifts of age-appropriate books always make my A-list.

6. A Rocking Chair

Something about rocking a baby to sleep while covered in an afghan makes me feel pleasantly nostalgic. It’s long been a tradition in my family to pass down this favorite piece of furniture. It didn’t cost them a dime, but now I can rock-a-bye baby the way my mother and her mother before her did in earlier generations.

7. A Cleaning Coupon

My own mum could put TV’s “Queen of Clean” to shame with her near-OCD addiction to banishing every single particle of dirt daring to show its ugly face indoors. I, fortunately, have a more pacifistic relationship with a bit of disorder in my home, but when things get too messy, it does make me snappy.

Trust me on this—new moms won’t feel insulted by cleaning help coupons. Whether you hire a professional service or simply use your own elbow grease, she will appreciate having chores taken off her plate.

8. A Ma-Spa Day

Schlepping around a baby and swollen breasts wreaks havoc on the backs of new moms. A spa day replete with massage, facial and pedicure does wonders to help her heal after childbirth. No room in the budget for paying the pros? Offer to pamper her yourself at home.

Gifts Mamas Truly Love

Giving birth comes with physical pain, financial stress and a host of practical things to plan ahead of time. New babies don’t remember the gifts given in infancy—but every new mom will appreciate these treats and be happy to return the favor when the time comes.

She enjoys long naps on the couch, sneaking spoonfuls of peanut butter when her kid's not looking, and binge watching Doctor Who while her kid's asleep.  She really does like her kid, though, she promises. Thousands of miles off the ground isn’t exactly the place most moms envision welcoming their babies, but when one mom gave birth on a JetBlue flight, she earned an unexpected perk—and the birth story of a lifetime.

According to USA TODAY, a flight en route to Fort Lauderdale, Florida from San Juan, Puerto Rico gained an extra passenger when an expectant mom gave birth mid-flight. The crew responded quickly as the mom went into labor and welcomed JetBlue’s “youngest customer to date.”

In honor of the birth JetBlue tweeted that it would be renaming the airplane, which was already aptly named “Born to be Blue” after the baby, and promised more baby gifts to come. In 2017, a baby born onboard the Indian airline Jet Airways earned free flights for life, so it’s a good guess that this newborn has a future of free jet-setting ahead of him as well.

The name of the baby has not yet been released, but both mom and baby are reportedly doing fine.
