High Flying Fun: Your Guide to Seafair 2023

Where to see the practice sessions, the best parks for viewing the action, and how to get there by public transit

Held at Genesee Park, Seafair has been a Seattle tradition since 1951, and for many families, it’s one of the “can’t-miss” events of the summer. While adults are impressed with what the high-flying acrobats can do in the sky, kids are flat-out amazed. But the event isn’t just about what’s happening in the sky. It’s a special time when hydroplanes and classic cars are celebrated too. Of course, the show’s biggest stars are the U.S. Navy Blue Angels. They have performed at Seafair for over 40 years! Want to get in on this Top Gun action? Below you’ll find the general scoop on the three-day weekend in addition to information on the best places to watch the Blue Angels at Seafair this year.

Boeing Seafair Air Show

The Boeing Seafair Air Show runs Friday, August 4 through Sunday, August 6, 2023, and it’s where you can catch the amazing flying aerobatics of the best of the best pilots. This year’s lineup includes US Navy Blue Angels (including Fat Albert C-130), the US Navy EA-18G Growlers (from Naval Air Station Whidbey), B-17 “Sentimental Journey”, B-25 “Made in the Shade”, US Army’s Golden Knights, US Army Helicopters, PBY-5A Catalina Seaplane, and US Coast Guard MH65 Search and Rescue.

The air show also includes displays by civilian pilots, vintage aircraft, and parachute demonstrations. It is said that Brad Wursten will be pushing the envelope of one of the most advanced aircraft in the world during his “Power Addiction Air Show” all three days.

As with past years, the Blue Angels have a flight plan for practices over Lake Washington so the I-90 Bridge and Seward Park will remain open.

HomeStreet Bank Cup

The HomeStreet Bank Cup is a H1 Unlimited Hydroplane Boat Race where the hydroplanes up to 220 MPH! Not only is this race an integral part of Seafair, but it’s also the third oldest H1 unlimited race site. This year they are celebrating 70 years with Seafair.

Seafair Classic Car Show

Up to 100 classic vehicles will be on display on the shores of Lake Washington for the Seafair Classic Car Show on Sat. and Sun. Come see vintage antique cars from the 1920s and 1930s, modified classic cars, custom classic cars, and classic foreign cars along Thunder Alley.

Museum of Flight Jet Blast Bash

The Museum of Flight’s Annual Jet Blast Bash is a two-day event that offers families the closest views of the Blue Angel show as the planes park and take off from the Museum. Held on Aug. 5 and 6, 2023 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., the Museum of Flight will be chock-full of outdoor family activities, plane displays, live music, food, and even a beer garden for moms, dads, and other caregivers. All activities are free with Museum admission. There will be some free parking onsite, but it will be limited so they recommend taking public transit.

Going to the Races

What to Bring
Be sure to lather on the sunscreen and bring lots of water and some extra cash as many of the beaches will have tasty treats to purchase. Your wingmen will enjoy the show best if you gear them up with some ear protection, especially if they can sport some cool earmuffs like the ones the pilots wear.

The Best Way to Get There
Genesee Park on Lake Washington will be your best bet for a front-row seat for both the air show and hydroplane extravaganza. However, getting there by car is no picnic, and finding parking will be that much harder. There is some general parking available for $50 (which you can purchase ahead of time) and limited paid ADA parking. Instead, we suggest you take advantage of buses and link light rail for your transportation needs. In any case, here are your options:

Sound Transit Link Light Rail
Get free round-trip shuttle service from Columbia Center Station from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sound Transit schedules and rates can be found online.

Sound Transit Buses
Check the Sound Transit Trip Planner for the most direct route from your home.

Metro Transit Buses
Metro Bus Route 50 will be operating a standard schedule with stops at Genesee Park & Columbia City Station. This route will operate every 15 minutes from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Seafair Saturday and Sunday. Military members and their families will receive free rides by showing military ID.

ADA Parking
Limited paid ADA event parking will be available on-site on a first-come, first-served basis. A state-issued, accessible placard is required for access.

Where to Find All the Action 

Genesee Park on Lake Washington is the official location and will be your best bet for a front-row seat to the Air Show extravaganza, hydroplane hoopla, and a lot more. The park is located at 4316 South Genesee Street.

Other Places to See the Air Show

Mount Baker Park
Located just two miles away from the Seafair epicenter, this beach park is the perfect spot to picnic while you watch in awe as the team displays the amazing agility and speed of the F/A-18 Hornet, performing a flurry of stunts that loop, roll, and turn through the sky. The small, well-groomed space has plenty of entertainment to keep those jet-heads busy while you wait for the show, including a life-guarded beach complete with a roped-off kiddie area, a cozy grass lawn perfect for a picnic, plus a small playground with a sturdy zip-line for small fries to attempt their own daredevil maneuvers on.

Insider Tip: Be sure to arrive early to beat the crowds and spend some time exploring the park before the show. Parking is limited, so consider using public transportation or venturing the neighborhoods on the hill above the lake.

U.S. Blue Angels

Colman Park
Located adjacent to Mount Baker Park, this lush, grassy waterfront area offers an amazing view of Lake Washington and a stellar place to picnic with the crew while you do some plane-watching. Spend some time wandering the walking trails, community garden and score some ice cream before the show.

Pritchard Island Beach
Tucked quietly away in the Rainier Beach area of Lake Washington is a little grassy beach that boasts of panoramic views of Seward Park and Mercer Island. Here kids can splash around in the water, cannonball from the low or high diving boards and enjoy the show away from the noise and glitz of the big festivities.

Aubrey Davis Park – Mercer Island
Formerly called Park on the Lid, this huge green space, located just off of the I-90 bridge, offers an abundance of room to watch a stellar show with spectacular views of Lake Washington, the Olympics, and Seattle’s skyline as the backdrop. The park also offers two softball fields, two playgrounds, and trails throughout the park, giving everyone plenty of room to run around, throw a Frisbee, or park for a bite to eat.

Groveland Beach Park Beach – Mercer Island
This hidden gem is located in a residential neighborhood on the west shore of Mercer Island and offers a guarded, sandy beach and playground to hang with your flight crew during the show. Keep in mind that you will have to walk down a steep, paved path to get to the beach. Although not a direct vantage point for the demonstration, this area does offer a less crowded alternative for plane gazing.

Keep ‘em cool at this gorgeous lakefront park with a sweet panorama of Lake Washington with Seattle, plus Mount Rainier in the background. It will be planes galore at this scenic Bellevue neighborhood park with its lakefront sandy beach, and sloping grass lawn, and the perfect place for your crew to convene for an afternoon airshow. With its play structure built right on the beach, tots can easily maneuver from water play to playground, to sand digging without missing a moment of all the high-flying action.

Meydenbauer Bay Park
Nearly walking distance from downtown Bellevue, this newly remodeled beach park will give you enough of a view, and plenty of activities to keep the chitlins busy both before and after the show. Take advantage of the quarter-mile of Lake Washington waterfront, beautiful swimming beach and swimming platform, plus a 400-foot-long curved pedestrian pier that extends into the lake, a hand-carry boat launch, paved walkways, picnic areas, and a fantastic playground. The park also features a hilltop overlook with gorgeous views of Seattle, a new beach house with restrooms, changing rooms, and boat rentals (think: canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddle boards), as well as a lifeguard station.

DIY This Non-Toxic Finger Paint for Kids

We love finger painting ideas for kids like this one that’s non-toxic and safe for babies

Make your own non-toxic paint and you’ll be less worried about your kids putting it in their mouth. This easy recipe comes together with three ingredients you probably already have at home. Follow these simple step-by-step instructions for making edible finger paint for babies and older kids, and you’ll be making art in no time.

Warning: While this recipe isn't made with toxic ingredients, it does contain raw flour, which the U.S. Food & Drug Administration warns against eating. Keep a watchful eye on your child and a wet washcloth handy to clean off hands as you paint.

Save this recipe for edible baby finger paints.

Supplies You'll Need

1. Mix the flour and water together.

Use warm water to help the mixture come together more easily. We used a whisk to get all of the lumps out. If you have older kids, this is a good step for them to help with.

2. Divide the flour and water mixture.

Pour the mixture into four bowls, cups or containers of your choice.

3. Add food coloring to each container.

We stuck with the basics, making our paints red, blue, green and yellow. That way we could talk about color mixing as we played, showing how red + yellow = orange and blue + red = purple.

Pro tip: We used only three drops of food coloring for each small bowl and still ended up with bright colors. If you go overboard with the food coloring, you may end up staining your fingers. But we promise it will wash off eventually!

4. Let your baby get creative!

Our little tester isn't sitting up on his own yet, so we made this a tummy-time activity. You can use any type of paper, but we like finger-painting paper (like this one from Melissa & Doug). It's glossy and non-absorbent, which helps the paint spread easily across it.

Pro tip: Let your baby paint in the high chair (as long as it's easy to clean), lay down a waterproof splat mat, or make this an outdoor activity to keep mess and cleanup to a minimum.

Post-painting clean-up: Set out your artwork to dry, and be prepared to give your baby a bath after your art session. The flour-water mixture should wash out of clothes and off of floors, splat mats, etc., but it's easiest to clean up with warm water right away. Happy finger painting!

Fort Reno Park

Climb Fort Reno's hill and you've reached the highest natural point in DC! This slope is known for it's longer-than-usual ride. Bubly Tube Park at Liberty Mountain

Liberty Mountain is one of the closest slopes to DC, and the lodge provides shuttle buses straight from the parking lot to the tube track so you don't have to waste energy trekking to the mountain. Bubly Tube Park has 15 lanes available for visitors to shoot down. Translation? Long lines are non-existent. And if you're lucky, you and the fam will have a slide all  to yourselves! Younger families can head over to the Kiddie Tubing area where kids smaller than 41" can tube safely.

This resort has 46 lanes, so you never have to wait long for another run (fun fact: they are now the largest snow tubing park in the country!). And 3 running lifts means you spend more time sledding than toting that tube back up the hill (and with over 1,000 feet of sledding, you're not going to want to walk). 1. Berry's Tree Farm

Open daily till Christmas, Berry's offers more than 5,000 real Christmas trees to choose from, plus train rides and a petting zoo. Purchase pre-cut trees or saw your own with supplies provided (or you can bring your own saw). And to help you get your perfect fir home, Berry's offers assistance cutting, tying, and needling, if you'd like a hand. They also offer snow flocking for an additional fee if you want it to really look like Christmas (or maybe just winter) at your place.

Insider Tip: Make your trip to the tree farm extra special when you pair it with a Santa visit. The Big Guy will be there November 25-27, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Saturdays and Sundays, December. 3-18.

2. Minter’s Farm

Voted one of the best Christmas tree farms near Atlanta in 2021, Minters Farm has been around for more than 30 years and opens daily for the holiday season right after Thanksgiving. Drive to the fields or take a hay ride to cut your own Murray Cypress, Virginia Pines, and Carolina Sapphires. Staff can help you cut, if you need it, and they'll also drill your tree if your stand requires it.

Insider Tip: The Carolina Sapphires are shorter season trees, so it's best to wait until the second week in December to start cutting them.

3. Thompson's Tree Farm

The original owners of this tree farm near Atlanta recently sold the spot but the new owners are keeping the same name. However, things are going to look a bit different here this year because of the business transition. You can cut your own Green Giants, Blue Ice, and Carolina Sapphires, or pick out freshly cut Christmas trees by appointment only.

Good to Know: Thompson's Tree Farm won't have the gift shop, wreaths, garlands, Fraser Firs, or a petting zoo this year, although they hoping to bring these features back next year. The good news? You can still expect free hot chocolate and coffee.

4. Sleepy Hollow Farm

Expect a wide selection of high-quality trees, including Leyland Cypress, Carolina Sapphires, and Blue Ice, at this Atlanta Christmas tree farm that also has barn animals to visit. Come cut your own (you'll receive a saw at the entrance), or pick up fresh-cut Fraser Firs and freshly-made wreaths beginning Novebmer 20. This spot is closed on Mondays (these people are our kind of people), but open Tuesday through Friday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Insider Tip: If you purchase a tree on Saturday or Sunday it’s no charge to visit the playground. If you want to come play on weekends without purchasing a tree, it’s $5 per person (children under 2 are free). The playground is not open during the week.

5. Hunter's Christmas Tree Farm

This family Christmas tree farm near Atlanta has been producing trees for more than 30 years, and is considered one of the most reasonably-priced options around. However, it's still managing the Christmas tree shortage, so visit early to make sure you get what you want. The u-cut field currently has more than 150 Leyland Cypress trees 5 to 15 feet tall, and there are more than 800 pre-cut Frasier Fir trees on order. They also offer a variety of garlands, wreaths and tree stands, and don't forget to dive into the complimentary hot chocolate and cookies. Remember to bring a toy or canned good for the North Fulton Community Charities.

Insider Tip: Santa will be at the farm on November 25, 26, and December 3, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Pony Rides will be provided on November 25 and 26, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and donations are appreciated.

They've got Leyland Cypress, Green Giants, and Virginia Pines waiting for you, plus flocked Christmas trees of all sizes. Stick around for the hot apple cider, candy canes, hayrides, and a petting zoo. On the weekends, delight your elves with a trip to the fun zone for a nominal fee. Make sure to check Yule Forest's Facebook page to see updates on their stock of trees or unexpected closings due to weather or tree shortage.

Casual DC Restaurants Offering Dine In & Take Out on Thanksgiving

Lincoln Restaurant
Dine in: We're giving thanks for the endless sides this restaurant serves up as part of their Thanksgiving feast. Mac and cheese, brioche stuffing, maple brown sugar sweet potatoes, charred Brussel sprouts and cheese grits are just some of the side stars. In addition to endless sides, enjoy endless meats at the carving station, one a la carte entree and a dessert for $65 ($25 for kids 12 & under).

Take out: Lincoln Restaurant is also offering Thanksgiving at home with a salad, farm turkey with country gravy, three sides, and dessert. Prices range from $75-335 depending on whether you choose the package for 2, 4, 6, 8 or 10 people. Orders can be placed by going to their website and clicking the link for Thanksgiving at home or calling the restaurant.

Founding Farmers
Dine in: The pre-fixed for this dinner is sure to please even picky eaters. Enjoy a three-course meal that starts with either soup or salad followed by your choice of a main: turkey, ham, pan seared white fish, salmon, veggie loaf, prime rib ($8 uncharge) and (for picky eaters) fried chicken. Each is served with an array of sides, including mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, green beens and corn bread. And sweet tooths, rejoice! Founding Farmers is dishing out pies on pies this holiday, among them are apple, pumpkin, pecan, key lime and coconut cream. Dinner costs $43.99/person ($20 for kids 12 & under).

Take out: From brunch to dinner to left over kits, Founding Farmers has you covered on Thanksgiving (as well as your entire holiday weekend). Order a turkey and you can technically lay claim to cooking this bird; you'll receive a "raw and ready to roast" Spatchcock Half Turkey that comes enough bread, sides and dessert to feed 4 ($200). Beyond the classic Thanksgiving entree, you'll find maple-glazed salmon, herb-crusted prime rib, veggie loafs and honey-glazed baked ham as take-and-make at home options.

1. Smolak Farms

Smolak Farms is your destination for everything merry and bright this holiday season. They will offer pre-cut and cut-your-own trees on their picturesque farm complete with fallow deer. They will have cut Balsam and Fraser Firs from five feet and to a soaring sixteen feet for sale. If you want to cut your own tree, head there early in the season as they often run out. They usually open the day after Thanksgiving for U-cut and sell the "marriage saver" tree stand to anyone who needs it.

Good to Know: Smolak usually has tons of fun Christmas activities for families like Santa visits, a tree lighting, and Elf storytime. They're currently coordinating with Santa to plan the 2022 events.

2. Maple Crest Farm

After they finish the pumpkin season, the folks at Maple Crest Farm roll right into Christmas trees, offering four fields to families looking to cut their own down. Find just the right Douglas, Canaan, Concolor, Fraiser, or Balsam tree to grace your living room. They've got sizes for everyone (some are even over 10 feet tall!). Trees are $75 and they provide everything you need (saws, sleds, and twine). All you need is room in or on your car. They'll even wrap your tree for you so you can get it home easily.

3. The Christmas Tree Farm

Whether you're a newbie or a seasoned Christmas tree hunter, you'll find the right tree for your fam at the Christmas Tree Farm in Pembroke. This working farm has been selling both U-cut and pre-cut trees for four generations. After you've found your tree, they'll shake, cut, bail, and net it for you (psst...they'll even cut it for you if you're not confident in your lumberjack skills). Don't forget to wave to the miniature horses and goats when you're there. And if you've got a pooch, they're welcome to tag along with as long as they're leashed and you clean up after them.

4. Pakeen Farm

Each Christmas season Pakeen Farm invites you to head to the barn and in the fields to pick out your perfect Christmas tree, while you sip hot cocoa, munch on mini donutes, and take in the brisk New England air. They offer u-cut trees, as well as pre-cut trees, wreaths, roping, and other holiday decorations. They typically have Balsam Fir, Fraser Fir, Concolor Fir, Norway Spruce, and a few Blue Spruce as well.

5. Holiday Tree Farm

Find a just-right sized Christmas tree to display your ornaments and watch over your presents all season long at this farm just north of downtown. Having been hit hard by the July's rain and the drought, they've lost lots of mature trees. But they are still excited to welcome families to the fields to find that perfect tree to bring home. The tentative dates for 2022 are December 11 and 12. Be sure to check their Facebook page for updates coming soon.

6. Indian Rock Farm

Choose and cut your own tree from the field full of Balsam, Fraser, and Concolor firs. You'll also find award winning, handmade wreaths, swags, and mistletoe that are accented with hand-crafted bows. This year Indian Rock Farm will only be open three days for the whole season—November 26 & 27 and December 3, with a reservation. Remember that they are cash only and leashed dogs are welcome to join you in your hunt for the perfect tree.

7. Greenwood Tree Farm

This spot has pre-cut trees as well as U-cut trees for sale so you can find the tannenbaum of your dreams. Fraser Fir and Balsam Fir are the dominant varieties sold here, and they only accept cash or check (ATM available on site). New this year is a chance to visit with the resident goats and chickens. Don't miss out on the free apple cider and purchase some honey to take home with you.

8. Tree-Berry Farm

This spot offers blueberry picking in the warmer months and Christmas trees in the colder months. Stroll through the field to find the perfect tree then flag down a cutter who will measure and cut your tree for you (you can also cut it yourself, if you prefer). Choose from a handful of Spruce and fir varieties (think: Balsam, Frasier, Cannan, and White Spruce). You might get lucky enough to catch a hayride around the farm too. Delivery is available.

9. Turkey Hill Farm

This beautiful hilltop farm has loads of Christmas trees ready for you to cut down. Open on weekends from Thanksgiving until they are sold out (they've actually sold out in a weekend before, so get there early), it's the place to find Blue Spruce, Fraser Fir, and Douglas Firs in beautiful surroundings. The max price you'll pay for any tree is just $120 and some are as low as $10 (think: Charlie Brown style). Cash or check only please, and leave your pups at home.

10. Crane Neck Christmas Tree Farm

As soon as you're done cleaning up the turkey, you can head to this Christmas tree farm near Boston—it opens the day after Thanksgiving (Nov. 25). Choose your family's fresh tree for their selection of Douglas or Balsam Fir ($89 for any height). Bring your own hand saw if you can, and be prepared to secure your tree to your car (no need to pull a Griswold this season). Cash or check is required. 

Good to Know: They also have a Groveland location (17R Wood Street) if that's more convenient for your family. It also opens the day after Thanksgiving.

Exposure to ‘Blue Spaces’ as a Child Linked to Better Mental Health

No need to get wet: being just near a blue space is great for your health

If you needed an excuse to hit the coast year then you’ll be happy to learn that going to the beach changes your brain, according to science. Actually, being near any body of water (think: lake, river or the sea) brings many health benefits for your mind and body in what scientists call “blue space.”

In fact, a new study from the Journal of Environmental Psychology reveals that exposure to blue space as a child has a major impact on a person’s mental health and will encourage them to maintain a healthy relationship with nature into adulthood.

“Building familiarity with and confidence in and around blue spaces in childhood may stimulate a joy of, and greater propensity to spend recreational time in, nature in adulthood, with positive consequences for adult subjective well-being,” says the study.

The study involved 18 countries and examined the relationship between adult well being and a person’s exposure to blue space as a child. Respondents shared their experiences with blue space during childhood, including how frequently they visited it and how comfortable their parents were allowing them to be in and near water. In a nutshell: the more blue space exposure as a child equalled a better adult well being.

“Adults also had familiarity with and confidence around coasts, rivers, and lakes, as well as higher levels of joy around bodies of water and a greater propensity to spend recreational time in nature during adulthood, says WebMD. “In turn, this lifted their mood and wellbeing.”

The impact that bodies of water have on our well-being are numerous: reduced depression, increased levels of creativity, and the ability to naturally de-stress are just a few. Now you know why spending time soaking up the waves and summer sun makes you feel so amazing!

Here’s how it works. Scientists say that being near water and listening to the waves can bring you to a more meditative state and lead to reduced depression. The undulating waves are relaxing, acting as a de-stimulator and can help bring more mental clarity as well.

While your mind is in a relaxed state, you are more likely to be more creative as your brain rests. The blue state helps take you away from the everyday stressors of life and you are free to let your imagination roam. The Global Healing Center recommends literally surrounding yourself with the color blue to bring about a sense of calm and inspire creativity.

Scientists also say that a swim in the ocean can de-stress you, stat. Not only can the water feel refreshing, but the naturally occurring negative ions are also said to help counteract the positive ions we come into contact with on a day to day basis, leaving us in a more peaceful and relaxed state.

Just stepping foot onto the sandy shores of the beach does a body good. Researchers say that the simple act of touching sun-warmed sand brings almost immediate comfort––unless you’re not a sand person.
