Don’t ditch the idea of Valentine’s Day lingerie until you see our seriously comfortable picks

For a lot of us, even thinking about Valentine’s Day lingerie makes us cringe. Itchy lace, boning and underwires, contraptions that require teamwork to get into, and we’re not about to start on wedgies (we’re being real here). Sure, it can look pretty, but it’s 2024 and we refuse to wear anything that doesn’t feel as good as it looks, especially when it comes to undies. We’re fully unavailable for adjusting and sucking in from now on, even on February 14th. It’s the dawn of a new era. The era of comfortable lingerie.

These are the Valentine’s Day lingerie pieces that you’ll actually want to wear all year. We know that’s a bold claim, but we’re backing it up with this list. Bralettes with soft mesh, stretchy bodysuits that can even be worn out and about, and, most importantly, pieces you’ll feel so good in. Because that’s the ultimate in hotness—feeling confident. Weather you’re looking for something to wear with your partner or just for yourself, we’ve got the Valentine’s Day lingerie you won’t want to take off. Well…maybe.

The words “What’s for dinner?” might be a busy parent’s least favorite phrase. You just got home from work, there are a dozen things to finish by yesterday, and you need to be at two different after-school activities in the next hour. And now you have to feed everyone a delicious meal—what gives? If you’re burned out on planning the evening meal but not excited about serving mac and cheese and dino nuggies yet again, we rounded up 11 easy family dinners to keep in your back pocket for those evenings when you just can’t. Some have store-bought shortcuts, and some use a slow cooker, but all taste great and require almost no prep work, yay!

If you want more easy family dinners, check out our favorite 30-minute meals and our make-ahead meals perfect for busy weeknights.

Baked Ranch Bacon Chicken

With only five ingredients, you can make a rich and savory main meal with this simple recipe from The Cookie Rookie. The prep work is easy, and it all comes together in one casserole dish.

Oven-Baked Salmon

Kristine's Kitchen Blog

Salmon is a versatile and healthy fish that most kids will eat. This recipe from Kristine’s Kitchen Blog is ideal for busy nights because it’s a 30-minute meal with almost no clean-up required. What makes it especially good is the honey-dijon glaze you’ll use to baste it while it cooks.

3-Ingredient Creamy Tomato Shells

Pinch of Yum

Pasta is one of the most versatile dinner options on the planet. With hundreds of different ways to prepare it, finding one that takes almost no time is a win for busy parents. This easy family dinner recipe from Pinch of Yum takes less than 30 minutes, and the secret is in the sauce!

The Viral Baked Feta Pasta

This dish went viral on TikTok a while back, and this is the original recipe that made it happen. The longest part is the roasted tomatoes and baked feta, and Feel Good Foodie has a faster stovetop version for those short on time (who isn’t?). Either way, you’ll get a savory pasta dish you can serve alone or as a side. For picky eaters, you can remove the roasted tomatoes from their portion.

French Dip Sliders

Warm, gooey French Dip sliders for dinner? Yes, please! The hardest part of this easy family dinner from Eating on a Dime is the time you’ll spend sauteeing onions to layer on top of deli roast beef and provolone cheese. If you’ve got picky eaters at home, just skip the onions on a few of the sliders.

Sheet Pan Pork Tenderloin

We love a good sheet pan dinner, and this one from No. 2 Pencil is as easy as it gets. It takes 25 minutes to bake this well-balanced meal in the oven, and with one pan to clean, it’s perfect for a night when you need something quick, filling, and flavorful.

Meatball Sub Bubble Bake

This is one of our favorite easy family dinners. Not only does it take 10 minutes to prep, but it also only takes about 20 minutes to bake. You’ll end up with a delicious one-pot meal with just four ingredients that older kids can whip up if you aren’t home. Get the recipe from Life with the Crust Off.

Pasta with Peas and Bacon

A house favorite, this quick pasta is so tasty that the kids will be begging you to make it every week. You can even use pancetta instead of bacon! Get the recipe here.

Slow Cooker Teriyaki Meatballs

Anything made in a slow cooker is a godsend for busy parents. This easy dinner recipe from Persnickety Plates uses frozen meatballs, teriyaki sauce (store-bought or homemade, depending on your preference), and pineapple. Serve over rice with broccoli.

Sheet Pan Chicken Fajitas

a picture of sheet pan chicken fajitas, which is one of the best easy family dinners
One Lovely Life

This easy family dinner is great for busy nights because you can prep all the toppings while the meat and veggies are baked in the oven. One Lovely Life says you can use store-bought fajita seasonings if you don’t have time to make your seasoning blend.

Honey Garlic Shrimp

a picture of honey garlic shrimp, an easy family dinner
Sally McKenney via Sally's Baking Addiction

Shrimp cooks so quickly, and the marinating time in this super easy dinner recipe from Sally’s Baking Addition is only 15-20 minutes, so you can prep it, take care of something else, come back, and throw the shrimp in the pan. Five minutes later, you’ll be ready to serve it up. Our only recommendation is to cut back on the amount of honey.

Sure, babies are adorable and have this irresistible smell that compels us to sniff them daily, but those tiny new humans who cause grownups to talk in reeeeallly high voices (more on that below) are also pretty darn weird. Like, did you know babies are born without kneecaps? How about the fact that if you look in your newborn’s eyes for long enough, your heartbeats will sync up? If you think that‘s strange, see what else made our list of surprising, little-known baby facts.

Babies learn their mother’s voice in the womb

It makes sense that newborns would know their mothers’ voices—they’ve just spent 9 months shacked up inside Mom’s body. In fact, studies show that not only do babies know her voice, but they prefer it, consistently showing increased attention when exposed to mom’s sound versus dad’s. Want proof? Just watch this adorable TikTok video of a wailing newborn calming down after hearing the familiar sound of Mom’s voice.

They also remember music they heard in utero

If you were on a disco music kick throughout your pregnancy, don’t be surprised if your baby perks up at the sound of “Saturday Night Fever.” A study by the University of Helsinki found that babies who were exposed to a particular lullaby in the womb appeared to recognize the song even several months after birth. So pick your tunes wisely!

Newborns can’t taste salt but have way more taste buds than adults

No matter how many chips you eat during those early days of breastfeeding, it won’t matter to your tiny guzzler. Research suggests that your baby can’t taste salt until about 4 months of age. That being said, your budding foodie has about twice the number of taste buds as you—including having them in the tonsils as well as the roof and sides of the mouth. Scientists think these added taste buds help make babies more receptive to their mothers’ milk.

Babies are born without kneecaps (kinda)

Those cute little baby knees are extra pudgy for a reason: there are no kneecaps in there! Or rather, infants don’t have hard kneecaps made of bone. Baby knees are initially only soft cartilage (better for cushioning them during tumbles), which eventually ossifies into bone as your tot grows.

And yet, at birth they have more bones than adults

Those little skeletons aren’t exactly miniature copies of ours. Most babies are born with almost 100 more bones than grownups—about 300 altogether—which fuse as they grow, eventually becoming the standard 206 bones that are typically found in adults.

Newborns can’t cry with tears

Oh, but they can cry. It’s just… tearless. This is because a baby’s tear ducts don’t fully develop until anywhere from 2 to 12 weeks of age.

Some babies have a “mini-period” after birth

Don’t freak out if you see a little pink or red discharge in your baby girl’s diaper. This phenomenon, called “pseudo-menstruation” or “false menses,” can occur in a small percentage of newborn girls up to 10 days after birth and is caused by the rapid decrease in estrogen that occurs when a babe leaves the womb. It shouldn’t last more than a few days.  Want more info? This article lays it all out.

Some may also have breasts—or even lactate!

There’s nothing new about babies lactating (about 5% do it), though luckily we’ve stopped thinking of it as “witch’s milk.” Once again, this is thanks to the estrogen in Mom’s body and can happen to boys and girls. No need to worry unless it doesn’t go away within a few weeks of birth (though breastfed babies may have breast swelling that can last up to six months, according to Seattle Children’s Hospital).

Babies have more brain neurons than adults

There’s a lot of growing to do in that promising little brain, and babies are pretty much born with all the neurons they’ll have for their entire lives. Since a good amount of brain cells die as we age, this means newborns actually have more neurons than we grownups do.  As your baby grows, these nerve cells are trimmed according to aging and the old “use it or lose it” adage.

And their brains double in size during the first year

It might seem like your baby has a big head when she pops out into the world, but that newborn noggin will grow to twice its size during the first year! This translates to about an inch during the first month and a half-inch every month thereafter, according to Mayo Clinic.

Our exaggerated “baby talk” actually helps babies learn

The particular way we speak to babies isn’t random (studies show it’s the same all over the world with even Rhesus monkeys addressing their littles in higher pitches). According to a University of Florida study, that strange but familiar way we talk to babies— higher pitch, slower speed, exaggerated pronunciation—actually helps them learn how the words should sound coming out of their mouths.

Baby stomachs are the size of a walnut

Turns out there’s a reason babies get full so quickly—and why you have to feed them so often! A newborn baby’s stomach is about the size of a walnut and can hold just 4-5 teaspoons at a time. Any more than that and you’d better hope you’ve got a burp cloth on your shoulder for the overflow.

You are probably addicted to your baby’s smell

Can’t get enough of your newborn’s personal perfume? It’s not just you. According to a study from the University of Montreal, a baby’s smell is as addictive as drugs are to addicts. The study found that the newborn baby’s odor activated the feel-good reward centers in adult brains, similar to those activated when an addict does drugs. And for moms, this rush of dopamine was even more heightened. So breathe it in, parents!

If mom and baby look into each other’s eyes for long enough, their heartbeats sync up

This is how connected moms and their babies are and, unlike a newborn, we could actually shed a tear it’s so sweet. Research shows that moms and babies are so in tune with one another that if they focus on each other intently, their hearts beat in sync. Think that’s cool? A 2017 study also found that when adults and babies look at each other, their brain waves synchronize. Scientists think this neural connection helps facilitate babies’ social learning. We’re weeping.

Babies are born with an innate sense of rhythm

Your baby may not have any moves yet, but she’s got the beat! Infants are born with a natural rhythm recognition that allows them to detect missing beats in drum sequences they hear, according to a study by the Institute for Psychology in Budapest. Scientists believe it is a result of spending so much time so close to the “ba-bum, ba-bum, ba-bum” of Mom’s beating heart while they’re in utero.

Now go cuddle your loveable little weirdo. And if you’re still in the mood for some quirk, here are 10 weird (but normal) things that babies do.

Make sure to capture all the cutest moments with your babe—and share them with your family and friends near and far—with the Tinybeans app. The secure platform puts parents in total control of who sees and interacts with photos and videos of their kids.

Becoming a new mom is tough, but these postpartum self-care tips can help give you the nurturing you need.

Welcome to the rollercoaster ride of motherhood, where each day is a whirlwind of sleepless nights, a flood of emotions you never knew existed, and baby coos you wish you could play on repeat.

If you’re a new mom, congratulations on this incredible adventure you’re embarking on. Whether you’re just days, weeks, or months in, we can only imagine how the arrival of your tiny bean has left you feeling—unparalleled joy with a side of “oh gosh, I’m lost in a tornado of diapers and baby bottles”?

Though, it’s within this bittersweet chaos that you can easily forget the most crucial passenger on this wild ride…you. Yes, you, the superhero who brought a small human into the world.

As your friend, your confidant, and your friendly voice of reason, we’re here to help you navigate the postpartum journey (because you don’t need to do it alone!). From taking care of your mental health to recognizing when you need professional assistance and everything in between, let’s dive into our top postpartum self-care tips.

1. Take Care of You!

There’s no denying that parents put themselves on the back burner when it comes to their children. While you can’t help but make your little ones your number one priority, refusing to dedicate time for self-care can affect your overall parenting.

With your body requiring extra care and nourishment upon giving birth, it’s important to stay hydrated (is that water bottle on your nightstand empty?), eat a well-balanced diet rich in nutrients, and get some hard-earned rest—we know, it’s easier said than done! Incorporating gentle exercises into your routine can also expedite your recovery. It could be as simple as light walks or pelvic floor exercises, but the key is to move at your pace.

2. Keep an Eye Out for Signs of Postpartum Depression

Motherhood brings forth a lot of change, including a spectrum of ever-changing emotions. While some shades are less joyous than others, it’s crucial to recognize if you’re feeling trapped in a prolonged shadow of sadness, hopelessness, or worthlessness.

These feelings are correlated to postpartum depression, a type of mood disorder that affects up to 15% of women after childbirth. The medical condition, which is often mislabeled as “baby blues,” can develop within the first few weeks to months after giving birth. It’s also marked by other serious symptoms, like a lack of interest in once enjoyable activities, the inability to connect with your infant, and thoughts of self-harm. Acknowledge your feelings during this transitional period, and if you find yourself experiencing any of these symptoms, seek immediate help.

3. Seek Professional Help When Needed

Your mental health as a new parent is vital. Not only does it play a direct role in how you navigate the unpredictability of parenthood, but it also impacts the quality of your relationship with your baby. 4. Find Your Village

Moms, we know you carry the weight of the world on your shoulders, but navigating this new era shouldn’t be an act you bear alone. Finding a support system can be paramount for both your mental and emotional well-being, whether it’s your significant other, family, friends, or a mommy support group. Surrounding yourself with comfort, laughter, and shared experiences can be the safety net that’ll uplift you when you need it most.

5. Carve Out “Me Time”

Oftentimes, it’s easy for moms to fully embrace their role as caretakers, devoting all of their time and energy to their new bundle of joy. But it’s important to not lose sight of who you were before children, and to not forget about what brings you happiness and relaxation in the process.

Devote time throughout each week that puts your first, so you can maintain your identity outside of motherhood. Reconnect with hobbies you love, or indulge in a guilty pleasure—maybe a TV series that’s just for you. This time is crucial for recharging and preserving your mental and emotional health.

6. Recognize (& Celebrate!) How Far You’ve Come

With so much always happening at once, it’s easy to overlook the small victories of parenting. Take a step back and celebrate all that you’ve achieved and how much your baby has developed—because of you! Whether it’s your baby sleeping through the night or you mastered the art of one-handed diaper changes, these small wins contribute to your growth as a mother. Acknowledging them can give you the feel-good emotions you need to keep going.

7. Set Realistic Expectations

Hooray, you’ve been promoted to the new role of mom, but like any new job, this period comes with some adjustments and level setting. Set realistic expectations of what you can and cannot accomplish in one day to gift yourself some much-needed compassion and grace.

Consider simplifying your daily routines to manage the demands of caring for a newborn. Rather than going to the grocery store, try ordering your meals weekly from a meal delivery service. If you’re overwhelmed by neglected household chores, tackle one area of the house every few days or divide and conquer with your partner. Every day may not be picture-perfect, and that’s more than okay.

8. Nurture Your Relationship with Your Significant Other

Amidst the sleepless nights and never-ending sea of bottles, don’t forget to nurture the bond with your partner. Communication is key and understanding each other’s needs in this new chapter of life is a must. Even simple gestures can go a long way in maintaining a strong and supportive relationship.

You’re in the right place! We combed through expert reviews and rankings to help make your family car-shopping decisions easier. So whether you’re looking for a roomie sedan, an eight-person people mover. or a stylish SUV, here are the best family cars for 2024.

Best SUVs for Families in 2024

Kia Telluride

a picture of one of the best family cars 2024, a kia telluride

Capacity:  Seats 7 across three rows

What the Experts Say: Stylish, roomy, and rugged, Car and Driver magazine ranked it #1 in its list of Best Cars for Families, calling even the base model Telluride “nicely equipped,” with top trims offering “near-luxury environs.”  Considered a mid-sized SUV, the interior is spacious, with comfortable seating even in the third row. Edmunds also named the Telluride winner in the Midsize 3-row SUV category, praising its “quiet and upscale cabin, impressive tech, extensive standard features, adult-friendly third-row seating, and a satisfying driving experience.”

Notable Features: A top-tier winner for safety, the Telluride was named an IIHS Top Safety Pick in 2023, with nifty safety features including an aerial view blind spot monitor that gives you a birds-eye perspective on your surroundings: collision avoidance systems that can mitigate crashes before they happen, as well as a 10-inch Heads-Up Display that puts all the information you need for your trip (such as speed and turn-by-turn directions) on the driver’s side dashboard so you can more easily focus on the road.

To keep you cruising in comfort, there are plenty of outlets for every kid to have a fully-charged device. There’s also a “Find My Car” app you use when you’ve, say, lost your car in the sprawling Target parking lot (just saying)—as well as remote start with climate control that lets you get your car nice and toasty (or cooled off) before you even climb inside.

Starting MSRP: $35,990

Honda CR-V/ CR-V Hybrid

a picture of one of the best family cars 2024, the Honda CRV

Capacity: Seats 5 across two rows

What the Experts Say: Consistently finishing as the best-selling Honda every year since 2017, reviewers call the reasonably priced CR-V “the benchmark small SUV for families,” with Edmunds saying that the 2024 model “pulls off this feat yet again with a smooth ride, helpful tech features and excellent storage space.” The CR-V offers “reliably good performance,” says Car and Driver, which ranked it #1 in its list of Best Compact SUVs, praising its “plenty of usable space” and “friendly driving dynamics.”

Notable Features: Safety features include standard blind spot monitoring, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, driver-attention monitoring (to keep you from nodding off in traffic), traffic sign recognition, and a back-seat reminder to help you remember your most precious passengers. If you’re looking to save on gas money, the hybrid model delivers an impressive 40 mpg, which will make up for the slightly higher sticker price. Do you have a lot of baby gear to haul? Edmunds calls the CR-V’s more than 39 cubic feet of cargo space “cavernous” (it’s one of the largest in its class)—meaning you’ll get your groceries and your stroller inside, no problem.

Starting MSRP: $29,500/$33,350 for the hybrid model

Subaru Crosstrek

a picture of one of the best family cars 2024, the Subaru Crosstrek

Capacity: Seats 5 across two rows

What the Experts Say: Named the overall Best SUV by Consumer Reports, reviewers praised the rugged and affordable Crosstrek, saying it “delivers an excellent ride, good fuel economy, standard all-wheel drive, and enough ground clearance for mild off-roading all in a reasonably sized and priced package.” It also comes standard with a slew of safety features that’ll make you feel good putting your tribe inside, whether you’re headed to the mountains or the mall.

Notable Features: Besides being a reliable off-roader, Subaru is known for putting safety first, so it’s no surprise that the compact Crsostrek comes with standard safety features like automatic emergency braking with pedestrian/cyclist/motorcycle detection as well as forward collision and lane departure warning, making it a Top Safety Pick from the IIHS for more than a decade. In addition, standard all-wheel drive will keep the car steady in all types of weather and terrain. Got wigglers? The seat belt warning system will audibly alert you (with a progressively louder alarm) if any of your passengers are unbuckled.

Starting MSRP: $25,195

Toyota Highlander Hybrid

a picture of a boy in a Toyota highlander, one of the best family cars 2024

Capacity: Seats 8 across three rows (7 if you opt for captain’s chairs in the second row)

What the Experts Say: Ranking #1 in Consumer Reports’ list of Midsize 3-row SUVs, the Toyota Highlander Hybrid has plenty to offer families who want to hit the road in comfort, with the magazine calling it a “smart choice for families looking for a do-it-all vehicle.” Families will appreciate the “abundant standard safety tech,” according to Car & Driver, though larger families might not like the tight third row, which makes for more limited cargo space in the back.

Notable Features: Save money at the gas station! This roomy 6-cylinder hybrid can carry eight people with a turbocharged engine and still get 35 mpg overall. Safety features are what you’d expect of a mainstream family hauler, with forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, lane keeping assistance, and blind spot monitoring all coming standard. Kids will be all eyes up with the optional panoramic moonroof, which gives a sleek window to the sky. You’ll also stave off the “Are we there yets?” with in-car wifi and five charging ports spread throughout the cabin.

Starting MSRP: $40,720

BMW X5

a picture of one of the best family cars 2024, the BMW X5

Capacity:  Seats 5/7 with optional third row

What the Experts Say: In for a splurge when looking for a new family car in 2024? Ranking #1 in Consumer Reports’ list of Luxury Midsized SUVs, reviewers called this sleek family ride a “luxurious, slick, and well-rounded vehicle” that “balances comfort, agility, power delivery, and interior quality.” Car and Driver also raved about the X5, praising it as “swift and swanky, with enough driving enjoyment to entertain on an occasional mountain pass.” That being said, while the car is roomy enough, reviewers say the optional third row is tight, making it a small-kids-only space (and not big enough for a bulky car seat).

Notable Features: Safety features include BMW’s Active Protection System, which detects imminent accidents and prepares by automatically pretensioning safety belts, closing windows and moonroof, and activating post-crash braking. There’s also a heads-up display on the front windshield to keep your eyes facing forward. Those who think of their cars as their sanctuaries will appreciate the X5’s gorgeous interior, which will make you think twice about allowing your little crumb-droppers to bring snacks of any kind inside (Good luck with that, by the way.). Elegant touches include a panoramic LED moon roof with embedded lights that create beautiful patterns in the dark, as well as a sleek (and huge!) curved digital display to show you the car’s stats in style.

Starting MSRP  $65,200 (for the base trim sDrive40i model)

Chevrolet Tahoe

Capacity: Seats 8 across three rows

What the Experts Say: If you’ve got a big family—and maybe a dog or three—this impressive SUV should be at the top of your list. With roomy seating across three rows, Car and Driver said the interior “feels like acres of space compared with smaller, mid-size SUVs.” That, and its “quiet interior”  and “meaningful options” earned the cavernous SUV a number one spot in C&D’s list of Best Large SUVs, with reviewers calling it “as faithful a companion as a golden retriever.”

Notable Features: Top safety features include standard forward collision alerts and front pedestrian braking; lane departure warning and lane-keeping assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and HD surround vision. Heading to the mountains? The Tahoe’s rugged V-8 engine can handle the drive: It’s got standard all-wheel drive and  20-inch wheels wrapped with all-terrain tires (and has a towing capacity of 8400 pounds, nearly as much as some full-size pickup trucks). Kids will love the available rear-seat entertainment system, which includes two 12.6-inch displays mounted behind the front seats. There are also power steps to help get people in and out of the vehicle—a helpful hack for, say, the in-laws or newly-toddling toddlers.

Starting MSRP: $56,200

Best Minivans for Families

Toyota Sienna

Capacity: 7 or 8, depending on the configuration, across three rows

What the Experts Say: Like it or not, the minivan is the most practical family-mover around (once you get one, you’ll get it), with the Toyota Sienna ranking number one in both Car and Driver and Kelly Blue Book’s lists of Best Minivans for 2024. KBB reviewers called the Sienna “quiet, and easy to drive” while praising its “outstanding fuel economy,” “robust suite of active safety features,” and “swoopy, sweptback look with supple body creases and modern lighting elements.”

Notable Features: While the Sienna is slightly more expensive than some of its rivals, you’ll save in the long run when it comes to gas since all models come standard with a hybrid engine that delivers up to 36 mpg, Made with families in mind, all trims come with power-sliding side doors, easy-stowing third-row seats, built-in side-window sunshades, and tri-zone climate control. A rear-seat entertainment system is optional—though plenty of outlets and USB ports are spread throughout the cabin to satisfy most tiny techies. Need to talk to your passengers in the third row? The car has its own intercom system to make en-route lectures with your littles a bit easier. And, of course, safety features abound, including available all-wheel drive, radar cruise control, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detecting, and lane-keeping assist.

Starting MSRP: $37,185

Online: Toyota.com

Kia Carnival

A picture of the Kia Carnival, one of the best family cars 2024

Capacity: 7 or 8, depending on the trim, across three rows

What the Experts Say: Nervous about joining Team Minivan? The Carnival may make it a little easier with its luxurious interior and boxy aesthetic that does its best to make it appear less minivan-ish (though maybe not as much as the yet-to-be-released 2025 Carnival). Car and Driver praised its “handsome, SUV-inspired look that helps van-averse drivers avoid the cringe,” while US News and World Report called it a “well-rounded, upscale and value-packed minivan with lots to offer,” adding that “while it isn’t flawless, the Carnival lives up to its name as a fun and flashy people hauler that stands out from the pack.” It also scored the Number 1 spot in Consumer Reports Best Minivans category, with reviewers calling it “roomy, comfortable, and refined.”

Notable Features: Climb inside this roomy set of wheels and you may forget all about that SUV you once wanted.  The Carnival’s interior feels like a higher-end luxury car, with an optional leather trim and a sprawling infotainment system that stretches across the dashboard (the 8-inch screen comes standard; the 12.3-inch dual screen is optional). A huge middle console lets you stash all your road trip goodies where the kids can’t see them, and 9 USB ports spread across the vehicle will keep everyone plugged in for the ride.

For kids who want to ride like the VIPs they are, the second-row captain’s seats have an optional one-touch relaxation mode that offers a full recline, raised power footrests, heating, and ventilation—with available rear screen displays so second-row passengers can stream their favorite media while cruising. There’s also a ton of space, with Car and Driver reviewers reporting they fit 14 carry-on suitcases behind the third row of seats and a whopping 48 in total with the seats folded down.

As for safety, the Kia has a slew of standard features, including lane-keeping assist, automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, automatic high-beam headlamps, and blind-spot monitoring. The available Passenger View with Night Vision display on the touch screen lets you peek in on passengers in the 2nd- and 3rd-rows, even at night. There’s also a two-way intercom system from the front seats to the back, so your kids can’t act like they can’t hear you—even in the third row.

Starting MSRP: $33,200

Online: Kia.com

Honda Odyssey

Capacity: 8 across three rows

What the Experts Say: You can’t talk about minivans without mentioning the Honda Odyssey, which has been the best-selling minivan in the US for more than a decade. The quintessential Mom Car snagged the #1 spot in both Motor Trend and US News and World Reports’ list of Best Minivans (though it ranked third for Motor Trend and Consumer Reports), with the former saying the car’s “surprisingly stable, nimble, amply powerful driving experience will reassure buyers who were dreading minivan ownership.” Motor Trend also lauded its “clever family features” and “surprisingly pleasant driving experience,” while US News praised its “spacious and comfortable cabin,” “long list of standard features,” and  “peppy engine.”

Notable Features: Who says a minivan can’t have some pep in its step? With one of the most powerful engines in the class (according to this review, anyway), the Odyssey pushes 280 horsepower to its front wheels through its “refined “10-speed automatic transmission, making for a smooth ride in both school zones and mountain passes (even without four-wheel drive). Safety features include all of Honda’s standard Sensing safety features, adaptive cruise control, emergency braking, lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Like the Carnival, the Odyssey has a Cabin Watch and Cabin Talk system that lets you see your second and third-row passengers and talk through an intercom to get their attention.

Got squabbling siblings? The Magic Slide second-row seats allow you to separate (at least two of) your kids by sliding the seats apart in the second row. Or, to keep kids distracted, the available 10.2-inch video screen can play DVDs or streaming media—or play the “How Much Farther” app, which lets kids track their trip by watching an animated screen. If all that didn’t have you dreaming in minivan, Honda’s in-car vacuum might put you over the edge. Car crumbs be gone!

Best Family Sedans in 2024

Honda Accord

a picture of a Honda Accord, one of the best family cars 2024

Capacity: 5 across two rows

What the Experts Say: If you’ve got a small family and don’t plan on taking the kids, the dog, and the gear anywhere anytime soon, the Accord offers an affordable, reliable ride with more space than you’d expect. Autoweek called it “exceptionally spacious inside,” with ” more trunk space than most people will ever need.” The Accord ranked #1 in Car and Driver’s list of Best Midsize Family Sedans, offering “two roomy rows of seats, a generously sized trunk, and all the infotainment tech expected from a modern car,” plus “refined road manners” that make it fun and easy to drive.

Notable Features: If you’re looking to save money on gas, opt for the hybrid model, which gets  51 mpg city and 44 mpg highway (even the non-hybrid is impressive, at 29 mpg city and 37 mpg highway). The available 12.3-inch touchscreen with wireless connectivity is a nice addition, and safety features include standard automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning, road departure mitigation (which adjusts the steering wheel if you cross lanes without signaling), blind spot indicators, adaptive cruise control, and traffic sign recognition. As for space, you can get three car seats in the second row, according to Kelly Bluebook, and the trunk space is spacious enough for your stroller and a load of groceries.

Starting MSRP: $27,895

Online: Automobiles.honda.com

Toyota Camry Hybrid

What the Experts Say:  There’s a reason the Camry has been the bestselling sedan in the US for more than 20 years, even now: “In a world awash in SUVs,” said Car and Driver, “the Camry continues to offer the old-school alternative of a competent, comfortable, dependable, economical, low-key midsize family sedan.” Ranked #1 on Consumer Reports’ list of Best Midsize Sedans, reviewers praised the car’s stellar fuel economy, intuitive controls, and standard advanced safety systems, making it a “competent, well-rounded and pleasant family sedan. While the price point for the hybrid model is a bit higher, we think it’s worth the extra expense for the Earth-impressing 47 mpg you’ll get on your drive.

Notable Features: The peppy sedan is touted for its smooth and quiet ride, in addition to its standard Safety Sense-2.5+, which includes forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, plus lane departure warning with steering assist. Blind spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning are available as options.  While it’s no SUV, the Camry has a good amount of space—it will fit two car seats (forward-facing and/or rear-facing) comfortably in the back row but don’t expect to squeeze a third one in, according to this review. In addition, its 15.1 cubic feet of cargo space can fit a standard stroller with room to spare (See this reviewer’s “Luggage Test” to see how big it is.)

Starting MSRP: $26,420

From unbelievable biodiversity to unique outdoor adventures, traveling to Costa Rica with kids tops the list for family-friendly vacations

Pura Vida. This was the first greeting my husband and I received when we arrived in Costa Rica for a quick getaway this past October. We decided on the Central American country after searching for a tropical Fall escape that would deliver exceptional ecotourism, unforgettable adventures, and a much-needed reset.

Translating to “pure life,” pura vida is the national motto of Costa Rica—and you’ll hear it said just about anywhere you go. It’s “hello” and “goodbye.” It’s “thank you” and “you’re welcome.” It’s “have a great day” and “I hope to see you again.” It’s short and sweet, yet all-encompassing.

The phrase also perfectly encapsulates Costa Rica’s entire vibe, from its laid-back lifestyle and friendly and welcoming locals to its envy-worthy attractions and breathtaking biodiversity.

While my husband and I decided upon a couple’s only retreat, we were amazed to see the number of families vacationing in Costa Rica. Though, after just one day of exploring, we could understand exactly why. The country offers unmatched experiences that parents dream of doing, but that kids will also appreciate seeing, along with the perfect blend of pura vida.

So if you’re considering heading to Costa Rica with kids for your family’s first international vacation, we’ve laid out five reasons you should experience this pura vida for yourself!

1. Safety & Accessibility

Costa Rica is considerably safe for locals and tourists alike, making it an ideal destination for those with children. It has a long-standing history of political and environmental stability, giving way to its nickname, “Switzerland of Latin America.” How safe are we talking here? The country has celebrated over 70 years of no standing army (impressive, right?).

Getting around is also relatively easy, so if you’ve missed some Duolingo lessons, don’t worry. Many residents speak English and Spanish, which is convenient for families who might not feel comfortable tackling a full conversation en español.

2. Family-Friendly Resorts

Families are the core of Costa Rican households, who place a great emphasis on being together. It’s no surprise that this family-oriented value has even extended into the country’s hospitality business. There are numerous family-friendly resorts to choose from, like SCP Corcovado Wilderness Lodge, which my husband and I have been eyeing for some time.

Located on the edge of the renowned Corcovado National Park, this Osa Peninsula-based resort is both a paradise for parents and nature’s playground for children. With 189 acres of surrounding rainforest and a nearby secluded beach, little ones can enjoy the action and adventure they crave, while mom and dad can carve out time for R&R at the on-site spa.

SCP Corcovado Wilderness Lodge also boasts amenities tailored specifically to those with kids, including a family-only pool, activities for all ages and adventurers, and an all-inclusive model that’ll handle all the cooking for you—so you can focus on making memories together. So if you’re looking for a break from the kitchen, this resort has your back and serves up the freshest meals all day (featuring ingredients grown on-site!), whether you decide to dine in at the restaurant, sit poolside or beachside, or want to simply enjoy family time on your own private terrace.

3. One-Of-A-Kind Outdoor Adventures

There are few destinations in the world that match the amount of natural wonders in Costa Rica. We’re talking a rainforest, waterfalls, volcanoes, and the list goes on. As a result, these gifts from nature provide a handful of adventures that cater to all age groups and activity levels.

If you have any young daredevils in your clan, fill your itinerary with ziplining through the lush rainforest, hiking picturesque trails of a waterfall, touring the base of a volcano, and stand-up paddleboarding on a lake.

For attractions that are less strenuous and more manageable with younger children, book a tour to go boating and see whales up close, spot wildlife in a national park, snorkel in the ocean, or try horseback riding.

4. Wildlife & Biodiversity Galore

More than 25% of Costa Rica’s land has also been designated as a national park, wildlife reserve, or protected land, which helps to preserve its stunning beauty. This allows families to explore nature in all of its glory and see the native species in their natural state—memories that’ll last a lifetime.

One of the most magical experiences from our Costa Rica vacation was seeing a family of monkeys, poison dart frogs, and toucans in the wild. While we were disappointed that there weren’t any sloths in sight at the time of our rainforest tour, we were still in awe of the diverse wildlife and biodiversity we were able to witness firsthand. Pictures will truly never do our experience justice.

5. Environmental Consciousness

Costa Rica is a leader in ecotourism, and visiting can provide an opportunity to teach kids about the importance of conservation and sustainability. Depending on where you lodge, your hotel may likely help you put your family’s conservation efforts into effect.

At SCP Corcovado Wilderness Lodge, along with any of its global sister properties, your stay can help give back to others and protect the neighboring community. From snarky retorts to replies that shut the conversation down completely, here are all the ways to deal with the comments you dread each holiday season

Gathering with family at the holidays can be wonderful, but for some, it can also be fraught with misunderstandings, insults, and worse. It’s not always intentional, of course. Cultural differences, varied life experiences, and a lack of exposure to outside ideas can all contribute to these clashes. But that doesn’t mean you can’t already have a prepared response to an insult that may come your way. You don’t have to sit silently when someone makes a snide remark about you grabbing a second helping of pie or when you’re finally going to get a “real” job. So what are some polite responses to rude comments you can have in your back pocket?

First, “Be realistic about what you’re walking into,” says Mariel Benjamin, LCSW and VP of Groups and Content for Cooper. “This includes not imagining that people have changed, that old fights are over, or that you’ll magically be a more patient person.”

Instead, Benjamin recommends reconsidering your boundaries (like spending less time by staying at a hotel), or even setting some ground rules in advance. She also suggests bringing items that might create a better atmosphere, “ like old photo albums to share in happy memories, or conversation cards for dinner talk that avoids politics.”

Dr. Glenn Doyle, licensed psychologist and trauma specialist at Insight Therapy Solutions, says it can also be helpful to “remind yourself that someone saying something does not make it true and that certain people are just projecting their issues or looking to get a reaction out of you.”

Modern-day etiquette expert and co-founder of Fresh Starts Registry Jenny Dreizen also reminds parents to prepare their children for these situations.

“Tell them that if they hear anything that makes them uneasy or someone says something to them that is uncomfortable, they are not compelled to answer and that they should come find you,” says Dreizen. She recommends moving with them to a private area to strategize together, whether that means interjecting into the original conversation, leaving the party, or just staying by your child’s side the rest of the evening.

“Making our kids feel safe, seen, and comfortable is always paramount,” says Dreizen.

Now here are some polite responses to rude comments to keep in your back pocket before your next gathering:

When someone tries to body shame you

“If there’s a comment about your body I would respond by saying, ‘I love my body for what it does for me rather than just focusing on what it looks like,’” says Jennifer Kelman, LCSW and therapist with JustAnswer. She says humor or self-deprecation is also usually helpful here.

Doyle agrees. “If you feel up to going the humorous route, you could respond by thanking them, stating you’ve been working out and you’re glad your body has caught their eye,” he says. “Otherwise, rolling your eyes, shrugging, and refusing to acknowledge their comment is my preferred route. Remember: the goal is to deny them the humiliated or disempowered reaction they’re after.”

When someone comments about what you’re eating

Dreizen recommends ignoring or deflecting the comment with humor by saying something such as, “Yes, thank you, it is a lot of food, and I am really looking forward to enjoying it. You enjoy yours!”

“My favorite response to any kind of shaming is somewhat sarcastic: pretending you’ve never heard that point of view before, thanking them profusely for their concern, and maybe asking them for more of their fascinating, helpful viewpoint,” adds Doyle.

For those who don’t enjoy sarcasm, he recommends shifting the attention to something or someone else, “the goal being to make the person who tried to shame you feel silly and petty.”

Bryana Kappadakunnel, LMFT and founder of Conscious Mommy, offers these quick conversation-ending responses: “I’m not open to discussing my diet. Let’s change the subject” or “I’m happy with my food choices and would appreciate it if you would please stop making comments. Thank you.”

When someone insults your parenting

“Most people hurl insults without any real awareness as to how they’ll land. Or, they want to return to a familiar pattern of engagement, usually one that starts with criticism, continues with defensiveness, and ends with someone wielding power over the other. Avoid that trap by staying clear, firm, and repetitive,” says Kappadakunnel. She offers the following scripts to ensure the listener understands that their feedback is not wanted:

“I feel good about our parenting choices. When I need your help, I’ll ask for it.”

“I understand I’m doing it differently from how you raised us. That is my personal choice, and I hope you can respect it.”

When someone insults your job or career

“This would be an incredible overstep and I would let the other person know that this is what interests you and this is where you feel happiest irrespective of how they feel about your career choice,” says Kelman.

Doyle meanwhile offers a therapy technique called “verbal judo.”

“If someone makes an insulting remark about your job or career, find something about their criticism to sort of agree with (‘You’re right, the money isn’t great,’ ‘You’re right, it’s not exactly what I wanted to do with my degree’), but then flip it on them with something you do like or is great about your current job (‘…but it gives me the flexibility I need now,’ ‘…but it’s a good placeholder while I look for my next job’),” says Doyle.

Dreizen offers a short and sweet response: “You know what, I am not looking for input on my career right now.”

When someone insults your relationship status or partner

“How to respond to negative comments about your relationship or partner might depend on several factors: whether your partner is with you at the event, how important your relationship is with whoever made the comment or whoever is hosting the event, and your personal tolerance for enduring or brushing off such comments,” says Doyle. He says he prefers to avoid responding to negative comments about a partner with humor as they may feel betrayed.

Kappadakunnel offers the following responses:

”I’m not okay with you speaking poorly about my partner. Excuse me.” (Then walk away.)

“I feel comfortable with my relationship status, even if being single isn’t something you would choose.”

“My relationship/relationship status is not something I’m willing to discuss with you.”

When someone makes bigoted remarks or wants to turn the conversation into a politically heated debate

“In the old movie War Games, there is a line, ‘The only winning move is not to play.’ While it’s tempting to address these comments in real-time, getting into an unwinnable, uncomfortable argument with someone you see once or twice a year might not be worth it in the long run,” says Benjamin. “A simple, ‘I don’t agree with you and I don’t think this will result in a productive conversation’ followed by a change in subject will set a tone.”

Benjamin says if they double down, it’s totally fine to exit the conversation.

“More important is that, if these topics come up in front of your children, that you have a discussion with them following this, letting them know that you don’t agree with these views and that your child understands why those views are objectionable,” she adds. “If it’s about something that is offensive, bigoted, or cruel, make it clear that you not only disagree but that it’s an unacceptable viewpoint to hold.” She says this is a good time to remind them that family can be complicated and that you don’t always automatically get along or even have to agree with them.

If things get especially offensive, Kapaddakunnel offers the following line to shut things down: “I will not engage in discussions that discriminate against others. Please stop, or we will need to get going.”

Cupola House Tree Farm

It started in 1988 with 6,000 tree seedlings planted on land that encompassed a house with a cupola on top. Nearly 30 years later, and after many references of “Oh right, the cupola house” being answered with “Yep, the Cupola House Tree Farm,” the name stuck and 24,000 trees now stand. Now, second and third generations keep the tradition of connecting with nature, farming, culture, and heritage alive alongside the original founders. All you need to worry about during a trip to Cupola is finding the perfect tree—they provide the tree saw, wagon, and twine, and they even shake loose needles off and strap it to your car for free.
