The Fiver Party

Rawpixel

Skip the gifts and just for cash. The “fiver party” is a simple solution for both attendees and hosts when it comes to the big birthday gift dilemma. Instead of gifts, guests are simply asked to bring five dollars for the birthday kid. With a dozen or more kids in attendance, those “fivers” will quickly add up to a decent sum which can be used towards one big gift.

All ages.

Goalsetter

Goalsetter allows family and friends to contribute to kids’ goals, such as saving for college, a brand new bicycle, or an experience of some sort. Kid 13 and under can create a free FDIC-insured savings account used to set earning goals in three different categories, including saving for the future, like college tuition, giving back to charitable causes of their choice or spending on meaningful gifts like expensive gear or experiences. Friends and family can purchase a digital GoalCard in any amount.

All Ages.

19 Gifts That Give Back to Others

Mother’s Day is coming up on Sunday, May 12th, 2019, which means you’re running out of time to get or make an excellent gift for the woman who gave you life.

Now, with two little ones, I don’t usually expect much for Mother’s Day. My hubby will often pick me up some flowers and something I mentioned wanting but would never buy for myself, and my oldest daughter will make me something out of construction paper and elbow macaroni, but that’s about it. Don’t get me wrong — I’m not complaining about it. I treasure every elbow macaroni craft, but sometimes you end up hoping for something a little more … well, awesome.

With that in mind, as Mother’s Day gets closer, here are some fantastic ideas to make your holiday rock a little bit harder.

Mommy and Me Yoga

Whether you’re an experienced yogi or a newbie, a mommy and me yoga class can be a blast. These beginners’ yoga classes can be a great way to stretch out, relax and spend time with your little ones. You may even find that you’ve got a talent for yoga, which might give you a way to relax even on your most stressful days.

Yoga helps to increase flexibility and improve your metabolism and can also help you lose weight. You don’t have to be active or naturally flexible to try out yoga, either. If you keep at it, the strength and flexibility will develop. As the late, great Carrie Fisher put it, “be afraid but do it anyway.” The confidence will come later.

Mother’s Day Weekend Camping

Who says you only have to celebrate Mother’s Day on a Sunday? Make it an entire weekend by heading out for a family camping trip. It doesn’t matter how old your kids are — you can enjoy a weekend camping trip. Just make sure you have a couple of comfort items like blankets or stuffed animals so your kids will be comfortable — and stock up on snacks and other supplies. You don’t want to be roughing it with young children. Wait until they get a little bit older for those wilderness excursions.

My parents took me camping as a kid and, honestly, they’re some of my best memories — even if we were sleeping on a beach in a sandy tent and got so sunburned we looked like little lobsters. We never went on a Mother’s Day camping trip, but it’s a great way to spend the holiday weekend.

Make Some Crafts Together

While I adore the elbow macaroni creations that I get from my daughter every year, it might be fun to make a craft together. Make splatter-paint canvases by throwing paint on a canvas. I can guarantee that kids of every age will love this one — kids adore making a mess! Just make sure you do it outside, because you will get paint everywhere.

This year, I think me and my oldest daughter are going to make handpainted flower pots. Terra cotta pots are perfect for painting, and once they’re dry, you can plant anything you want in them. Both beautiful and functional.

DIY Pizza Party

Who doesn’t love pizza? Instead of ordering in, why not get the kids involved and make your own pizzas? If you’re handy in the kitchen, you can easily make your own pizza dough. But if you’re not, store bought is fine.

Set up the pizza dough and let your kids build their own with their favorite toppings. You can even create a pizza bar with all the toppings, sauces and cheeses you want. Then, once they’re decked out, throw them in the oven and you’ve got a tasty dinner that you all worked together to make. What better way to spend Mother’s Day?

If you’re worried about counting those carbs, don’t fret — you can make a low-carb pizza crust with a riced cauliflower.

Play in the Dirt

Kids love digging in the dirt, so why not get your hands dirty and plant a garden? You can plant flowers to decorate your yard, or maybe vegetables, depending on what’s in season in your area.

If you don’t have a yard that you can dig up to create a garden — either because of HOA rules or just because you don’t have a yard at all — set up some raised planting beds and go to town. Your kids will love to have you playing in the dirt with them, and depending on what you plant, you might have some fresh vegetables or fruits to enjoy a few months down the road.

Whatever You Do, Enjoy Your Day

Now, I’m not saying you have to do all of these things for Mother’s Day — or any of them. This list is just to give you a few ideas to help your Mother’s Day be a little more awesome this year.

Jennifer Landis is a mom, wife, freelance writer, and blogger. She enjoys long naps on the couch, sneaking spoonfuls of peanut butter when her kid's not looking, and binge watching Doctor Who while her kid's asleep.  She really does like her kid, though, she promises. Find her on Twitter @JenniferELandis.

A group of teens provided an amazing birthday gift for a boy with autism whom they had never met before and their whole community came together to celebrate their kindness.

Kristen Braconi took her son Carter, a five-year old with with high-functioning autism and ADHD, to a local park in South Brunswick, New Jersey for what turned out to be his best birthday ever. As Carter was riding his scooter, a group of teenage boys approached him and unprompted offered to teach him how to skateboard.

As Braconi explained in a Facebook post, the boys taught him how to balance on the board, encouraged him and helped him up when he fell. Later they even sang Happy Birthday to him. She said the boys were not aware that Carter has autism. “They wanted to do that for him and their kindness and inclusion without knowing anything was going on with him, it was amazing,” she told CNN.

When the impromptu lesson was over, Braconi and Carter bought some ice cream and sandwiches and returned to the park to give them to the kind boys. “I wanted to recognize the kids and their parents because when you can show their parents how kind and respectful they are when you aren’t around you know you have done a great job!” she said. “They did so much more than they knew.”

The video Braconi shared online went viral and was spotted by the South Brunswick police. The department shared the video on Twitter in hopes of tracking down the boys to reward them. The internet did not disappoint and the teens were located and will be gifted with a pizza party.

At this Astoria play space and educational center known for their wonderful and whimsical classes for babies and children, various party options are available for your cuties. Customers must first contact the facility and staffers provide a tour and then they choose one of three packages: Basic–in which you bring your own food and decorations, Premium, in which they’ll take care of the food and decorations and Super Premium in which you get all the bells and whistles as well as age-appropriate entertainment, such as characters appearances or a jewelry or soap-making class. You get private use of the space for 3 hours; they charge only for the space rental, and not per child, there are no extra hidden fees for bringing your own food or balloons. The Paint Place
Painting parties in which everyone paints the same general painting but it’s still personalized and “your own” are not just for adults. Kids are also gravitating to canvas paint parties and you don’t need any experience. Parties for kids here are 90 minutes long and include about 60 minutes of instructional painting of a prechosen image. Kids will paint anything from basic hearts and ice cream cones, to some works from Monet, Van Gogh, Warhol, you name it.  When kids paint, the teacher–a professional artist–usually incorporates some kind of art history lesson into the session. Parents can then use the remaining time to bring in any food/cake etc. Partygoers also have the option to extend their event by a half hour or hour, for a fee–just ask to speak with the team about it.

Inside this whimsical space, you’ll find rotating, carousel-style rides (one looks like a cloud, another has cushiony dolphins that spin) that look like they’re made of foam. Every ride is really plush, from a see-saw boat that holds 4 (adults are allowed on this.) In the very back of this playspace is an awesome two-tiered climbing structure with a balloon room, awesome soft clear slide, maze, and, of course, a beloved ballpit. Parties are held on-site and there’s a private party room downstairs. Super cute place, but really best for toddlers, so think a 3rd or 4th birthday celebration. Parties must be booked in advance; call the venue for more info.

City Owlets
This playspace-slash-cafe is awesome for kids 5 and under and hosts one heck of a party. It’s best described as a mini house with a bunch of little nooks, some two-tiered, and each little nook has a theme. For example, there’s a baby/toddler sensory space with awesome (safe) lights, a ‘supermarket’ area, a pretend cafe, and so much more, including dress up clothes, you name it. You know know what fun you’ll find around the corner at City Owlets, and in warmer months there’s also a backyard with kid safe climbing and sliding toys. It’s Open Play during the week, along with kids classes and special events, and parties are private and personalized. Call to speak with an employee about the venue’s Go OWL Out parties (these are set themes, i.e. unicorns, mermaids, dinosaurs, superheros, etc…). It’s a hands-free, book your party, and let City Owlets handle the rest package. (Most parents choose this option.) They have a new package called “Totally OWLsome”, which is a full-fledged custom package. Parties at this space are best for kids 5 and younger.

11 Birthday Party Ideas For Sporty NYC Kids

House Party: Birthday Entertainment That Comes to You!

—Rachel Sokol

Sports have become a major part of kids’ collective youth culture. While your kick-loving kindergartner may adore soccer or your pint-sized pitcher could play baseball all day every day, not all kids enjoy (or feel comfortable playing) what many parents consider “traditional” sports. Enter sport stacking. If you haven’t heard of this sport, the story of now-21-year-old Jesse Horn illustrates how cup stacking can help kids with autism.

Horn, who is autistic, didn’t feel like he “fit” into traditional athletics growing up. At age 9, Horn got his first stack of Speed Stacks. If you’re not familiar with the sport, stacking involves precisely (and quickly) stacking and unstacking a set of cups in a very specific way. Speed Stacks are the official cups of the sport.

Photo: Courtesy of Jesse Horn

Not long after getting his first set of stacking cups, Horn realized he had a passion for the sport. He practiced for hours daily, honing his skills. Even though Horn did get better and better at stacking, that wasn’t the only benefit of this sport. Like many autistic children, Horn found social interactions challenging. While he had no real friends at school, he was developing online friendships within the stacking community.

The friendships that Horn was building weren’t just in the not-always-so-real world of the internet. A year after starting the sport, Horn competed in his very first tournament. But that wasn’t his only first. An invitation, by a fellow stacker, to a pizza party the night before the tournament was a major social first for the boy who had trouble making friends.

Twelve years of sport stacking later and Horn is still enjoying the game. The 21-year-old recently graduated fro college and is enjoying a career as a motivational speaker—thanks (in a big part) to stacking!

Classes for the Whole Family

Gingerbread House Day
After last year’s success, the Country Village in Bothell will be hosting its second annual Gingerbread House Workshop for families. Get a sneak peak, on November 14th at the annual Taste of the Holiday celebration. Here, families can greet Santa’s reindeer as they make their holiday debut, check out demos and enjoy holiday refreshments, including fresh roasted chestnuts (starting at 4 p.m.) before heading over to Santa’s Cottage to get their build on.

The following weekend, Nov. 21st, is the official Gingerbread House Day. Expect lots of holiday cheer, train rides, pony rides and photo ops with the wandering gingerbread man and woman at this lively celebration. But no matter what workshop date you choose, you’ll find everything you need to sit down with the kidlets and create a messy masterpiece with all the sticky frosting and gooey treats provided. Take your creation home or enter it in the Gingerbread House Competition that will make your holiday shopping sting a little less if you win 1st place, a $200 gift certificate to the Country Village. This T-town family tradition is a great post turkey, pre putting-up-the-Christmas-tree event for the whole fam. Santa will make a special appearance at one of the sessions to sit down with little decorators and make sure their special wishes are on his list. But don’t worry if you miss out on Santa, each session has an added extra (like music and special guests) that add a sprinkling of magic to an otherwise already magical day. Pre-registration is required (sessions are filling up quickly!) and museum members receive a 10% discount.

Where to See Ah-mazing Houses

The 23rd Annual Gingerbread Village
After decorating a house as a family, take a trip to the downtown Sheraton Seattle, where an ogle-worthy display of gingerbread creations, designed collaboratively by local architecture firms and the Sheraton’s own culinary team, will be on display from the week of Thanksgiving through the new year.

Jedis of all ages will cheer for this year’s oh-so-timely theme, May the Holidays Be With You, featuring fantastic gingerbread creations inspired by the Star Wars movies. No Jedi mind trick here, just plenty of scene stealing creations, photo ops for your littlest lightsaber wielding fan and a chance to finally find those droids you were looking for (we hope!). Plan for a bit of a wait before you can see the houses if you go on the weekends, but don’t let that discourage you. This is one line that’s worth waiting through!

What could be better than playing with your food? How about decorating it first? Budding chefs and the sweet obsessed—which is pretty much every kid we know—can bring friends along to make edible creations before blowing out the candles at these create-and-eat birthday party spots. An added perk for parents: cleanup is included!

California Pizza Kitchen

For little sous chefs who love to get hands-on in the kitchen, a pizza party at California Pizza Kitchen in Bellevue is the perfect option. The birthday kiddo and up to 25 of his or her closest friends will get a behind-the-scenes tour of the restaurant from General Manager Hal Reynolds (bet you didn’t know the restaurant used to be a bank?) along with a tour of the kitchen, pizza tossing lessons and the opportunity to make their own pies using a variety of kid-favorite toppings like cheese, pepperoni and olives as well as some unique ones too (think broccolini, corn and grilled chicken). Since Reynolds knows kids (he has twins of his own), he will make sure everyone in your party is entertained from start to finish. From decorating chef hats, to learning how to toss a pie, to personalizing pizza to-go boxes, Reynolds will keep your party going, so you can sit back and enjoy yourself. At the end of the experience, all partygoers will become certified CPKids Pizza Chefs and will not only take home the leftover fruit of their labor, but a free CPKids Meal Certificate to use on their next visit. As an added bonus, Reynolds will serve up complimentary samples to all of the adults in your party and will throw in print invitations and thank you cards. Now, that's amore!

Good to Know: For an extra fee, you can order CPKids aprons for everyone to wear and take home as a party favor. Don’t want to bring in a birthday cake? CPK will provide sundaes with Haagen-Dazs vanilla ice cream, triple-thick hot fudge, fresh whipped cream, rainbow chocolate chips and a cherry. Just make sure to tell them when you book your reservation.
