There’s always some new product for babies and kids out there. The “next big thing” is just around the corner, and with kids growing and changing fast, it makes sense that products have to keep up. Sure, when we were growing up, we were gnawing on wooden blocks and throwing glass bottles with latex nipples across the room and we came out okay. Right? Or at least, made it to adulthood. That doesn’t mean the “new and improved” weird kids products aren’t, well, improved.

But we’ve gotta say it. There’s also some weird stuff cropping up. The “are you serious” products that we can’t quite believe are real. They’re good for a laugh, but what if they’re actually brilliant? What if these strange products work like a charm? Well, we did a little research and, lo and behold, there are a lot of them that do. Based on Amazon reviews, this stuff seriously can’t be missed and might ultimately become must-haves. Can TikTok’s Tart Cherry Juice Actually Solve Your Toddler’s Sleep Issues?

Parents are singing this sour juice’s praises all over social media, but here’s what experts think of the latest miracle cure for your toddler’s sleep problems

For so many parents, bedtime is nothing short of a circus, leaving them as exhausted as their sleep-resistant children. And when kids struggle to get their nightly shut-eye, we moms and dads start Googling. Melatonin! Magnesium! Is it the nap schedule? Do we need to start meditating before bed? Is there some kind of voodoo doll I can use to get this kid to sleep?! When all else fails, sleep-deprived parents turn to social media for out-of-the-box suggestions—or, in this case, out of the bottle. TikTok’s latest magic bullet? Tart cherry juice for toddlers.

I know what you’re thinking. Juice? Yes, juice. Before bed? Uh-huh. Some parents swear that if you want your toddler to go to sleep more quickly and rest more soundly, all you need is some watered-down tart cherry juice, and they’re even turning it into bedtime popsicles, gummies, smoothies, and more. But is this promised sleep remedy actually effective and safe for little kids? We got all the juicy details with help from Pegah Jalali, a registered dietitian in New York City, and Dr. Candice Jones, a board-certified pediatrician in Orlando, FL.

What is tart cherry juice?

Tart cherry juice is, as you probably guessed, a tart-tasing juice made from cherries—specifically, Montmorency cherries, which are native to France and taste far more sour than those sweet Bing cherries you’re used to. According to the Cleveland Clinic, tart Montmorency cherries contain melatonin, a naturally occurring sleep hormone that helps regulate our sleep cycles (and a supplement you might have heard your mom friends talking about). They also contain tryptophan, an essential amino acid that helps our bodies make melatonin.

A no-sugar-added bottle of this biting liquid can cost upwards of $6 for 32 ounces, with a serving size usually listed as one cup.

Can tart cherry juice help toddlers sleep?

The #tartcherryjuice hashtag has more than 60 million views on TikTok, and we’d guess plenty of those are from exhausted parents. But despite the many claims from TikTok moms and dads that their toddlers have never slept better, Jalali stresses that there isn’t any current scientific data studying the effect of tart cherry juice on sleep in children. Gulp. This means that medical professionals shouldn’t officially promote tart cherry juice as an appropriate, effective treatment for littles who struggle to go to sleep.

Is tart cherry juice safe for toddlers, babies, and older kids?

The fact is, we just don’t know right now. The most current study on sleep and tart cherry juice is from 2012, when researchers had 20 adults spend a week drinking an ounce of the juice before bed each night. In the end, this group slept better than the placebo group, and tests found more melatonin in their urine.

Another study from 2010 looked at tart cherry juice’s effects on a small group of elderly adults who struggled with insomnia. In this population, the researchers found that tart cherry juice did “modestly improve sleep,” but they reported that their “findings may not generalize to other populations.”

What this shows is that there may be potential to demonstrate that tart cherry juice is an effective sleep aid, but with study populations as small and limited as your toddler’s attention span, we can’t generalize the results to the general population—especially kids. This is something that researchers from both studies agree on.

What are the other benefits, if any, of tart cherry juice?

Jalali agrees that the melatonin and tryptophan in tart cherry juice “can help increase sleep duration,” though, again, this isn’t well studied. Upon examination of several bottles, we found that tart cherry juice offers consumers calcium, iron, and potassium. Cherries are also a good source of antioxidants and vitamins A and C.

Beyond this, the sour substance has been used by athletes to help with muscle recovery, thanks to its anti-inflammatory qualities. This has been especially effective after high-intensity events rather than regular daily workouts, says a 2010 study in the Scandinavian Journal of Sports Medicine. It found that when marathon athletes regularly drank the juice before and after competing, they recovered more quickly and felt less soreness and inflammation.

What are the downsides of tart cherry juice consumption?

We empathize with any parent struggling to get their child to sleep. However, Jalali reminds us that the American Academy of Pediatrics “recommends limiting juice intake based on age.” For example, toddlers should only have up to 4 ounces of juice daily, which is half a cup.

Jalali also shares that we need to consider our kid’s oral health. Sugar shouldn’t sit on a child’s teeth all night, so if you’re going to give tart cherry juice a whirl, your kiddo should have some water afterward and thoroughly brush their teeth. Also, as a mom of four, the last thing I want any kid to do, especially a new-to-the-potty toddler, is to load up on a liquid before bed. That’s like engraving a formal invitation for a bed-wetting incident.

Additionally, kids’ interest in a particular food or drink can ebb and flow. If your only go-to for helping your child sleep is tart cherry juice, Jalali says we need to ask: “What will parents do if the child refuses?”

And finally, even no-sugar-added juice is high in carbohydrates, averaging about 30 grams of carbs per serving. Unfortunately, this is similar to the carbohydrate count in a regular soda. Drinking tart cherry juice alone, without any fiber, fat, and protein, can spike and crash a person’s blood sugar, which can make it harder to fall and stay asleep. So one has to decide, do the potential pros outweigh the cons?

What are other strategies parents can use to help their kids sleep?

When a child can’t sleep, there are so many possible explanations. Dr. Jones says some sleep issues stem from “lack of a consistent bedtime routine, a recent nap, a distracting environment, separation anxiety, a scary dream, or sickness.” Other potential disrupters might include a sleep disorder, enlarged tonsils or adenoids, an uncomfortable sleeping environment, and screen time too close to bedtime.

Parents have to become investigators. It’s always a good idea to keep a journal for a few days and try to pinpoint the issue. If nothing turns up, head to the pediatrician for some insight. Dr. Jones encourages parents to ask their doctors for sleep recommendations. She advises us to be mindful of children’s needs to have a “consistent bedtime routine, create a comfortable and quiet sleep environment, turn off and remove distractions such as electronic devices, and resist allowing your child to take a nap close to bedtime.” Be mindful that sickness can disrupt your kid’s sleep, but that “they are likely to return to a normal sleep pattern once they are well.”

It’s not a good idea to put a bandage on a symptom. Instead, you need to get to the root cause and work from the ground up to help your child sleep, ideally with the help of their medical practitioner.

Still on the fence about whether or not to try tart cherry juice? Dr. Jones isn’t convinced—yet. “There are many sleep aides that could help,” she says, “But, like tart cherry juice, many are controversial and unproven.” As parents, Dr. Jones reminds us of our number one job: keeping our children healthy and safe.

The answer to whether you have access to free preschool really depends on where you live and whether you qualify

When your kid approaches age 3 or 4, you may consider sending them to preschool. It probably seems like the natural way to have them enter the education system and transition to kindergarten, but it’s not that simple—and one looming question on parents’ minds is this: “Is preschool free?”

Short answer: No, preschool isn’t free.
Long answer: Preschool can be free, but not everywhere in the United States.

“The cost of preschool varies dramatically across the country, but the average tuition costs approximately $10,000 per academic year,” says Amanda Vierheller, co-founder and COO of Playgarden. “Cost is one of the most prohibitive factors in families committing to preschool.”

Although costly, parents might view this as an investment in their child’s future as research shows that preschool benefits kids socially, emotionally, physically, and cognitively. However, since not every family has the means to send their kid to preschool, it’s become a hot-button topic in many states.

With that said, we understand that navigating the world of preschool for your child can be difficult and we’re here to help. To make the process easier, we spoke with education experts and families about their experiences with preschool and whether free preschool might be a possibility now or in the future.

When do kids start preschool?

Preschoolers are between the ages of 3 and 5, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but children typically start preschool between 3 and 4. By chatting with local preschools, parents can determine what each school’s expectations are for readiness (e.g., potty training) and evaluate whether their kid fits the bill.

What are the benefits of preschool?

One of the reasons many parents consider sending their children to preschool is because of the advantages they’ll receive ahead of kindergarten.

“Preschool introduces children to routine, rules, independence, socialization, early learning, and foundational skills that they use both in school and at home,” says Vierheller. “Students who attend preschool have opportunities to promote social and emotional development with peers and teachers.”

Aside from gaining independence and developing their social skills, preschool also helps to prepare kids for kindergarten. “Not only do kids learn the foundational skills needed to master elementary school topics, but they also learn how to be in school,” says Cara Delzer, head of community at Outschool. “They get to practice self-control, asking for help, and learn how to navigate a structured setting.”

Most importantly, children develop essential skills like language and communication by playing, learning, and interacting with others. “Students also build fine motor and gross motor skills with the daily practice that comes with school activities,” Vierheller adds.

How much does preschool cost in the US?

As mentioned above, Delzer says a traditional preschool usually starts around $1200 a month or $10,000 per year, but this may vary depending on the location, number of children attending, and the type of preschool chosen.

Jaime Maser Berman, a publicist and mother of four, has three of her children currently enrolled in preschool in Westfield, NJ. For the 2022-2023 school year, her kids’ tuition cost the family roughly $6,000 per month.

“Preschool is definitely not free; in fact, we joke we’re constantly hemorrhaging money. Such is life as a parent,” says Maser Berman.

A program to help cover the cost of preschool

While tuition concerns are a real problem for many families, Delzer says there is a government program that’s in place to help.

Head Start

The most well-known free preschool option is Head Start, which is available in some form in every state for children aged 3 to 5. (Sister program Early Head Start is an option for families with kids under 3.)

“Every state has requirements to qualify for Head Start, such as income limits,” says Delzer. “Many school districts provide free preschool with some restrictions, such as limiting it to certain age groups, only being available for part of the day, or only being available 3 days a week.”

Does your state have free preschool?

Nearly all states have free preschool available through Head Start, as long as families meet the eligibility requirements.

Some states offer free pre-K for students who are 4 years old. “Florida, Georgia, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Vermont, and Washington D.C currently offer universal pre-K programs for all children, although some are based on lottery acceptance as spaces are limited,” says Vierheller.

She adds that other states have universal pre-K policies in place for at-risk children, and some are working towards the benchmark of offering state-wide pre-K in the future. For example, California is on track to have free high-quality pre-K for all 4-year-olds by 2025.

The video was posted by Finnish mom Annabella Daily, who shares details of what daycare is like for her son.

Daily says kids in Finland attend daycare from ages one to six, where they’re encouraged to learn through play. They spend several hours outside each day and are also served warm, healthy meals and snacks, which they eat together at tables in a dining room.

“They also do art, music, and crafts,” she says.

One of the parts of Finnish daycare that will be especially foreign to American viewers is that kids are potty trained there “in their own time,” using tiny potties and sinks.

Oh, and here’s the kicker. In Finland, this high-quality care is considered “every parent’s and child’s right,” so it’s subsidized by the government. Parents pay a maximum of $325 per month. No, not per week. Per month.

This is a truly heart-wrenching reminder that things don’t have to be how they are in the U.S. This is what childcare looks like in a country that prioritizes and invests in parents and kids—and we could very well do that here. All it takes is supporting political organizations and politicians who work for policies that would invest in this kind of change. It’s not out of reach, but it takes widespread support that starts with many of us.

Don’t Give Your Kids These Bedtime Snacks If You Like Sleep

So you rummage through the fridge or pantry, looking for something that’s easy to prep and quick for your kid to scarf down. Whether they’re genuinely hungry or just stalling, kids will often ask for a small snack before they head off to bed, and there’s nothing wrong with giving them one. But according to experts, some options are better than others. Here are some bedtime snacks to avoid.

Drinkable snacks

Packed with vitamins and nutrients, a glass of milk or a bottle of drinkable yogurt are healthy snacks and, as a bonus, they also provide some hydration for those stubborn kids who resist drinking water. But chugging milk or yogurt drinks before bed isn’t ideal for littles who are still perfecting nighttime potty training. “If they are out of diapers and may still wet the bed occasionally—if the urge to pee doesn’t wake them up yet—then it’s wise to avoid a large drink before bedtime,” says registered dietitian Cara Rosenbloom.

Snacks that contain caffeine

As most parents know from our essential morning cup of coffee, caffeine is a stimulant, which means it makes you feel more awake. So it makes sense that too much caffeine can lead to insomnia (trouble falling asleep) for kids and adults alike, says Rosenbloom. That’s one reason why pediatricians advise against any caffeine for kids under the age of 12. So, off the table for kids’ bedtime snacks (or even daytime snacks) are cola, iced tea, and energy drinks (like Red Bull or Prime Energy).

But what about foods that contain caffeine? Chocolate is the main culprit here, thanks to the caffeine which occurs naturally in cocoa beans. But it has much less than caffeinated drinks like coffee or brewed iced tea. For example, one cup of coffee has 135 mg of caffeine, iced tea has 30-50 mg, and a can of cola has 40 mg. On the other hand, an ounce of milk chocolate has 7 mg. “It may be a surprise that chocolate contains caffeine, but the amounts are relatively low compared with coffee and energy drinks,” Rosenbloom explains. Here’s a bit of a shocker from the dietitian: “A bit of chocolate [before bed] is fine for kids.” But just a bit!

Cake and candy (but not for the reasons you might think!)

Think back to the last kids’ birthday party you attended and you’ll probably remember the excitable, sometimes uncontrollable behavior that seems to explode right after the kids eat sugary foods like cake or candy. But here’s a bit of a surprise: Researchers who study the link between sugar and hyperactivity haven’t found a strong connection. Believe it or not, most experts believe that the idea that sugar makes kids super-active is largely a myth! Rosenbloom says when kids seem to perk up when eating sugary foods, it’s more likely due to the exciting environment, the caffeine in sugary soda, or certain food colorings.

And here’s some more myth-busting for you: sugar doesn’t affect sleep quality. “There are no studies to support the idea that sugar is linked to poor sleep or bad dreams in children,” says Rosenbloom.

But that doesn’t mean candy is a solid bedtime snack. It isn’t filling, and it can get stuck in kids’ teeth (especially gummy candy) and resist brushing. “Plus, too many sugary foods and beverages may also displace more nutritious foods in the diet, so kids get fewer essential nutrients,” says Rosenbloom.

Best bedtime snacks for kids

The ideal bedtime snack for kids is “smaller portions of nourishing mealtime foods,” says Rosenbloom. (Bonus points if that dinner they rejected two hours ago is still sitting on the table ready to turn into a snack!) Examples of great mini-meal options include:

  • Fruit and nut butter
  • Noodles or crackers with cheese
  • Yogurt
  • Cereal with milk (skip this one if you’re potty training!)
  • Vegetable sticks with bean dip
  • Toast with chopped egg
  • Rice and beans

When it comes to bedtime snacks that are kind to teeth, the Canadian Dental Association recommends options such as plain milk or buttermilk (again, not for while you’re nighttime potty training), as well as fresh fruit and raw vegetables. Plain yogurt, cheese, and cottage cheese are also excellent choices, along with hard-boiled or deviled eggs, nuts, or sunflower and pumpkin seeds. It should go without saying that no matter what kids eat before bed, their teeth should be thoroughly brushed afterward.
