This has been an unprecedented year for high school seniors. School districts are working hard to give the seniors the best and most socially distant send-off they can. Bus drivers from two different school districts came up with a fun way to honor the Class of 2020.

Windsor bus drivers gave a special salute to the senior class May 8 using 22 buses to spell out, “2020” in the Windsor Central High School parking lot.

Senior Bus Tribute

In addition to spelling out “2020” with buses, the drivers also wrote the names of each Windsor senior between the buses.

“We wanted to show them we care. It’s our way of saying goodbye and letting them know they aren’t forgotten,” said Windsor bus driver Nancy Flanagan. “They grow up with us. They first get on our bus when they’re four years old.”

Bus drivers from the Lovelands City School District in Ohio also had the same idea.

One of the district’s long-time school bus drivers, Lisa Moorhead, brought the idea to the Chief Information Officer, Susanne Quigley. After reaching out the Jim Barret the high school photography teacher who was able to implement a drone to take the aerial shot.

Moorhead along with a team of drivers moved 22 buses to the high school parking lot. It took two hours to create the formation.

“Some of us have been around long enough to transport these kids since Kindergarten and some of us have only been working with the district for a few years, but the one thing we all have in common is the love for our students.  This is a huge accomplishment and anyway we can show them some love, we will do it.  So here’s to the Class of 2020.  Your bus drivers are proud of all of you,”said Jennifer Bloom Bowman, a bus driver for the district.

Working mothers face many obstacles when returning to work after taking a career break. According to research done by LinkedIn, more than 70% of mothers are part of the US workforce. Yet there are barriers that they need to overcome when making the transition from mother to working mother.

Woman in office

Rosanna Durruthy, VP of Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging at LinkedIn offers many tips for working parents based on this new study conducted via a Censuswide survey fielded from February 13 – 20, 2020, among 3,000 working parents ages 18-54 and 1,000 hiring managers across the U.S.

Durruthy shares that more than half of hiring managers recognize the difficulties working mothers face on a daily basis from inflexible work schedules to stigmas around taking time off. It can be very challenging for mothers to advance in their careers after taking a break, but they should embrace their time off. The data compiled shows that hiring managers tend to have an open mind when recruiting mothers returning to work. They see the value this group brings to the workplace and are eager to bring them in. Managers feel that moms are likely to be hard-working, have strong time-management skills and patience. Parents should highlight any career breaks on their resume and share the benefits gained by taking this time off.

When looking for a new job, moms should seek out companies that are right for their specific needs. Companies that offer a flexible work schedule are often the best fit. The interview period can be used as a time to gauge the company culture. Parents can also research part-time roles or work opportunities that allow them to work remotely.

Parents should look for community resources when reentering the workforce. Managers can help with finding out what sponsorship opportunities are available. Reaching out to connections in their network, allows working moms to find mentors or new opportunities. LinkedIn offers groups for working women including Working Single Moms and Thrive: Professional Women’s Group

Duruthy writes, “The transition from employee to mother to working mother can be a remarkable shift, but remember that you’re not alone.”

The Inspiring Women series debuted in 2018 on International Women’s Day featuring Barbie dolls based on artist Frida Kahlo, aviator Amelia Earhart and NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson. This line is dedicated to honoring modern and historical role models who paved the way for generations of girls to dream bigger than ever before. Last year, Barbie inspired a new generation of girls with the release of two new dolls,  Rosa Parks and Sally Ride, the first American woman in space.

Each doll features authentic clothing and unique accessories, plus educational information about the honoree’s contributions to society, so girls can be inspired by their stories through play.

Stories can be extremely comforting for kids, whether they’re healthy or not. For pediatric patients at MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center in Iowa, having stories read to them helps them feel calm and reminds them that they are not alone.

Hospital employee, Dane Pratt, works as a cardiovascular perfusionist. This means he runs the ECMO machine for patients, like a young 13-month-old boy, Parker who has been hospitalized after contracting two viruses similar to RSV. As he sits with his patients, monitoring their health, Pratt also administers a healthy dose of comfort by reading children’s books to them.

“They can still hear and sometimes it helps to let them know they’re not alone, that someone is there for them,” Pratt told CBS affiliate KCCI.

This simple act of reading can make a tremendous difference for a child and their families. “I had a really scary time when we thought we weren’t going to see another day with Parker and he came to her bedside to read with her,” said Parker’s mother, Cassie Baker. “It just completely melted our hearts.”

Pratt typically checks out books from the library to read to his patients, but now he is reaching out the public for help in securing more books via donation. If you want to donate new or gently used children’s books, please send them to:

Dear Confessional,

For most of my life I’ve been at war with my eyeballs. Sometimes at night, I fight my eyes to uncross, focus, and reopen during a strange bobble-head battle when I’ve worked too many hours during the day. Let’s also not forget that blank, open-mouthed stare while at work, followed by a day-dream about the idyllic career/position. It’s a vicious cycle between feeling grateful for what you already have and aspiring for something more.

Determining how to best proceed can be quite daunting. Whether you’re a parent or not, taking a leap of faith and fulfilling your true passion isn’t as far-reaching as it seems when you have a realistic plan to get there.

Do any of these criteria describe you?

  • You’re currently employed but desire a better position.
  • You know you deserve more out of your current job and are tired of being overlooked.
  • You know you’re ready to work again, but don’t know how to dive back in.
  • You miss feeling accomplished professionally, and you miss sleep!
  • You’re ready to return to work after all of the kids are now in school, but don’t really want to go back to your previous job because you no longer love it.
  • You feel guilty to change careers after spending so much time in school, building up your current job, worrying about the discouraging opinion of others, and fear failure.

If you can identify with any of these descriptions, keep reading. Take a closer look at these top tips for planning and achieving the direction you truly desire.

Proper prioritizing between your career and ambition, and managing a healthy lifest‌yle and family life, is harder than it seems. Is it possible? Absolutely! The only way to succeed is to first create a plan and tackle it one small step at a time, without losing sight of your happiness, health, and family.

After taking a professional hiatus for a few years to refocus my efforts on my family of 6 + 1 super furry dog, I reconciled with my eyes and became determined to dive in again, not dabble.

If you’re ready to start empowering your own life and fulfill your true ambitions with concrete action, here’s how.

1.  Determine your goals.

  • What is your dream job?
  • Is it realistic?
  • Is it feasible?
  • Does it require a financial obligation or commitment?
  • Is it local?
  • Would the hours be manageable with familial obligations?
  • Is it what you really want right now?
  • Identify your obstacles.

2.  Draw it out.

  • Let go of fear and inhibition, and make a plan. Take those swirling thoughts and big ideas out of your head and onto paper with a brain bubble.
  • Start with a circle in the middle of your paper that details your goal.
  • Draw branches out from your circle and identify distinct objectives.
  • Make a micro-list under each objective with ideas for achieving each one.

3.  Work in small steps.

  • Look at your brain bubble, create a concrete to-do list, and start with the simplest step. It’s easy to become overwhelmed by staring at the top of a magnificent mountain. The only way up is one small step at a time.
  • Focus only on the step before you. This is a personal journey, so achieve each comfortable step to impress yourself only.

4.  Stand out.

  • Always remain realistic, and determine a unique approach to achieve your target.
  • Offer the best value-add to your initiative. Try to strategically stand out instead of doing the same as your competition.
  • Spend time thinking about why your offering is valuable, different, and better. Focus on your unique niche, even if you’re working towards a promotion or developing your own brand.

5.  Don’t overtalk or brag.

  • As you begin this exciting path, remember not to blab about it. This is merely a thought at the moment. The more you overtalk or brag about what hasn’t transpired yet, the more you set yourself up to back off from the big picture.
  • Frankly, when it comes to family and friends, most career talk necessitates follow-up, questioning, and often leads to feelings of self-doubt. Don’t fail yourself before you begin. Remember, you are doing this for YOU, so share with caution.

6.  Don’t lose sight of YOU.

  • Give yourself breathing room to process, plan, and enjoy your own company.
  • Learn to take breaks for yourself, social relationships, and the family.

7.  Make sure to SLEEP!

  • You can’t drive a car straight, productively, or without crashing if you’re half asleep at the wheel. You need to recharge and reboot your mental and physical computer by shutting down.
  • Manage at least 6-8 hours of sleep per night as a priority. Allow yourself the opportunity to dream big with your eyes closed and achieve fearlessly with your eyes opened.

8.  Work honest and work hard.

  • Every effort should move full-steam ahead, full of passion and determination. As long as you truly love what you do, you will not fail! The only way to fail is not to try at all.

9.  Take risks!

  • The higher up you climb, the trickier the maneuvering. You have nothing to lose, so take risks, stay positive, and keep reaching! Remember, there will be some tough moments—people who will say it’s not possible, others who laugh at your efforts, and some who say nothing at all and exude so much jealousy. This is your road, your journey, and only your life lesson. Keep your focus and don’t stop trying.

10.  Check off your to-do list and keep expanding.

  • Take a moment to absorb your effort and accomplishment. It takes a lot of courage to chase your dreams. Don’t forget to stop, breathe, and play with your kids.

Don’t be scared to dream bigger than you think possible! Believe it, plan it, achieve it, conquer it, and enjoy your view from the top.  You can do it! “I never lose. I either win or learn.” — Nelson Mandela

All rise for the newest Career Barbie! The honorable Judge Barbie doll is now presiding over play time.

Barbie has taken on over 200 different careers since her debut in 1959. From astronaut to president, Barbie has held some very impressive titles and the latest is among one of the most important roles. According to the American Constitution Society, women make up only one-third of sitting state judges in the United States. Barbie is hoping to change this by inspiring a whole new generation of girls to consider judicial careers in the future.

photo: Courtesy of Mattel, Inc.

The launch of the new Judge Barbie dolls serves as an important nod to the Barbie Dream Gap Project, a global initiative to raise awareness about the limitations that can prevent young girls from reaching their full potential. Research has shown that starting as early as age five girls begin to lose confidence in their own competence because of outside influences, like the media and cultural stereotypes. Barbie wants to inspire girls to understand their limitless potential with the Barbie Career line and help them understand they have plenty of choices.

The brand consulted with the National Association of Women Judges to ensure that Judge Barbie is as representative of sitting female judges as possible. The four different Judge Barbie dolls feature a variety of hair colors and styles, as well as skin tones and facial features. They come dressed in a black judicial robe with a lace collar and a gavel accessory. Under her robes, Judge Barbie is still a style maven with a floral-print dress.

All four new Barbies are available for purchase now. The dolls are priced at $12.99 each.
