It was another typical sleepless night of tossing and turning, unable to shut off my brain after a long day of work and managing all that comes with four active boys. I picked up my phone and searched “insomnia” on YouTube and came across a few meditations and hypnosis videos, popped my earbuds in and shut my eyes.

Meh. Not helping.

I did another search of “relaxation” and found a video of a young blonde woman entitled “sleepy time soft sounds massage” so I clicked…with hesitation, because I was unsure of what I was about to hear.

At first, I was horrified that I may have clicked on some kind of somehow-safe-for-YouTube-porn, but after viewing for a bit there was nothing sexual. Just a lovely young woman with a Russian accent whispering that she was going to brush my hair and help me get to sleep. Slightly creeped out, but desperate for some shut-eye, I closed my eyes, listened and fell asleep within minutes. Success!

The next day, I had images of my husband busting into the room showing me our internet history thinking our boys had stumbled into something they shouldn’t, only to embarrassingly admit that I was the culprit. Yes, I was the one listening to a hot Russian woman pretend to brush my hair and help me have “head tingles” to relax.

Obviously, that didn’t happen—but I wouldn’t have cared anyway because it worked. I was quickly lulled to sleep by her gentle and reassuring voice. I was hooked.

What I had stumbled across was a hugely popular, but still very underground, phenomenon called ASMR—short for “autonomous sensory meridian response.”I noticed that this one ASMR YouTuber’s channel had over a million and a half subscribers and 10 million views of this one video alone. Maybe the subscribers were mostly creepy guys, but I had to figure it was more than that.

I scanned the comments on the video and yes there were some guys, but most were regular folks suffering from stress and insomnia. I was surprised to find moms like me thanking her for allowing them to rest and for giving them a mental and emotional break. Some were coping with depression and anxiety through the videos, others would listen while undergoing treatments for cancer. I was still seized with thoughts of whether this was all kosher but nothing I saw or heard was “off” in any way.

It reminded me of years ago in when a man came to repair one of the typewriters in my high school typing class (yes, typing class). I was supposed to be doing my drills on the typewriter but found myself completely mesmerized by his thymic movements, tinkering with his tools repairing the machine in front of me that I just stopped typing and my head started to tingle, my body went limp and I just wanted to zone out.

It took every effort not to lean forward and say to him, “Can you just stay there all day and just keep doing what you’re doing because it I’m completely relaxed which is no small feat.”

Was I a total weirdo? Not really.

Many of us have had this sensation at least once and it can be triggered by a variety of things. For some it can be triggered by tapping or any repetitive movement or sound. It often happens to me when I’m sitting in church and there’s someone knitting near me. The rhythmic and repetitive tapping and clicking of the knitting needles and twisting and looping of yarn zones me right out and relaxation sets in.

For someone who just cannot shut off my brain or my body, it’s a much-needed break for my poor overworked nervous system. Isn’t every mom’s nervous system shot like mine at least on some level?

I’ve now become an ASMR aficionado and have my favorite go-to ASMR YouTubers. Instead of dreading bedtime and another night of catastrophizing about my kids, job and life, I look forward to a new ASMR adventure in relaxation. There’s no need for a trip to the spa when I can simply put on my headphones, close my eyes and just tune out.

Some videos last an hour or more, others mere minutes—so when my six-year-old and 16-year-old twins are battling it out in the living room, I can pop in my earbuds to hear someone whispering calm words or using a gentle rain stick and I can feel my blood pressure falling like the raindrop sounds on the video.

Of course, I’m usually sawing logs before it’s even over but that was the point in the first place. And it’s not like my kids would let me just pass out for a few minutes like that, anyway. That’s alright—I know I’ve got a good night’s sleep waiting for me once they’re in bed.

Laura Richards is a writer and mother of four boys including a set of identical twins. She has written for The New York Times, The Washington Post, Redbook, Good Housekeeping, Woman's Day, Martha Stewart Living, Reader's Digest and many more.

Adam Mansbach, the author of Go the F*ck To Sleep, is releasing a third installment in his adult picture book series. The new book, aptly titled F*ck, Now There Are Two of You, follows the ode to picky eaters—You Have to F*cking Eat.

Mansbach gets it. He understands the trials, tribulations and seemingly never-ending stream of sleepless nights. After giving voice to two of the biggest struggles parents face, bedtime and meal-time, Mansbach is now taking on how life changes when you go from one to two kiddos.

Fans of Mansbach’s first two books, and pretty much anyone who reads the titles, already knows these picture books are not meant for children. Even though they’re packed with kid lit-like illustrations, the content is purely for parents.

F*ck, Now There Are Two of You is available for pre-order on Amazon right now. The book makes its grand debut on Oct. 1. If you’d rather listen to Mansbach’s newest book, instead of reading it, Larry David (co-creator of Seinfeld and the mind behind/star of Curb Your Enthusiasm) will narrate the audio version. David recently told Entertainment Weekly, “As the second-born child, I’m sure my parents experienced feelings similar to those of the narrator in this book.” The comedian, actor and writer added, “Is it any wonder I’m so f‑‑‑ed up?”

Celeb mama and model Behati Prinsloo recently shared a pic of her daughters, two-year-old Dusty Rose and one-year-old Gio Grace on Instagram. Even though Prinsloo, and hubby Adam Levine, typically keep photos of their kiddos private, this time it was for a very good reason!

Model Kate Upton, like Prinsloo, is more than just a pretty face. The model-actress mama launches the #ShareStrong hashtag earlier this week and other celebs, such as Prinsloo and actress Jessica Biel, have joined in.

Upton’s initial post read, “I’m strong for my daughter, I want her to feel comfortable to radiate strength, power and confidence. I realize that starts with me. Now I encourage you to join the conversation and share why you’re strong.”

Prinsloo jumped to join in on the conversation posting her on IG photo, captioning it, “Here’s to the sleepless nights, bleeding nipples, crying, laughing, the highest of highs and lowest of lows and everything in between.” She went on to add, “I won’t change a single thing, being mom to Dusty and Gio keeps me strong, motivated and empowered.”

21 Things You’ll Think as a New Mom

The average newborn sleeps for three to four hours at a time, according to the National Sleep Foundation, but you probably already knew about the whole babies just don’t sleep thing. Now new stats from an Indeed.com survey show that new working mamas spend an average of 105 days on the job before their littles sleep through the night.

What does this mean for U.S. working moms? For most of us, showing up to work after a totally sleepless night is pretty much the norm, but it also makes returning to a job mere weeks after birth just that much more challenging.

photo: Engin_Akyurt via Pixabay

Indeed.com’s survey isn’t exactly the first set of statistics that points out the impact newborns have on their parents’ sleep. Another survey from Owlet Baby Care found that parents of infants under six-months get a depressingly low amount of nightly shuteye. Almost half of the parents surveyed got between one and three hours of uninterrupted (not total) hours of sleep nightly.

While you can’t change how or when your baby sleeps, your employer may have a solution. In a perfect world, the United States would jump on-board with the extended paid parental leave policies many other countries offer or at the very least, companies would offer flexible start times.

Luckily it looks like employers are taking notice when it comes to tired new parents. Almost two-third of working moms surveyed by Indeed.com said their employers did offer some form of scheduling flexibility in their baby’s first year!

Target Wins for Most Clever Mother’s Day Gift This Year

It’s always refreshing when a celeb who seemingly has it all together gets candid about the challenges of motherhood. New mom Gabrielle Union recently opened up to Parents Magazine for a cover story and we can all relate.

Union and husband Dwyane Wade welcomed their baby girl, Kaavia, via surrogate in November after years of struggling with infertility. The couple has already been very open about their struggle to become parents—and now that they’ve finally welcomed their daughter, Union isn’t holding back on the challenges of parenthood either.

“I suck at swaddling,” she admitted to Parents. “I don’t know whether to use glass or plastic bottles. I never knew there were so many types of nipples. And installing a car seat is like taking the SATs! I don’t have all the answers, which feels terrifying.”

Finding time for herself hasn’t been easy either, as all new moms can relate. “Kaavia went through a phase of not napping,” she said. “I was like, ‘When do I shower or pee or live?’ So I had to get a little comfortable with her crying, which I had not been. And then I took the quickest shower of all time!”

Of course, in the end all of the hardship from the IVF treatments to the sleepless nights and missed showers is worth it. Union is happy to share her family’s journey with others. “Kaavia really is the personification of hope for a lot of people like us, who maybe didn’t have a lot to be hopeful about,” she said. “She represents that maybe there is a light at the end. And when you take people on the low points of your journey, it’s cool to let them be part of the joy.”

Having a long gap between babies can feel daunting. Being thrust back into the newborn world of sleepless nights and diapers that were already a distant memory isn’t easy, but getting to experience those precious first moments all over again makes it totally worth it. Joanna Gaines gave birth to her fifth child after an eight-year gap and she’s sharing some inspiring insight about the experience.

“When this baby comes, there is going to be quite the gap,” Joanna recently told PEOPLE. “I feel like those years when the kids were all young, it was so foggy … at one point I had four kids [age] 4 and under, and I just remember it was like tag-team wrestling. Chip and I were trying to figure out how to do this with four kids so young.”

This time around the couple is approaching things a little differently, however. Joanna explained that they really want to take their time and enjoy all those special moments.

“I look at this as another opportunity to really embrace this moment with a newborn,” she said. “My kids are so excited about it … but [I want] to slow it down a bit.” That said, the couple is still hanging on to many of their parenting traditions.

Joanna recently shared a post to Instagram of proud papa Chip holding baby Crew and sporting his hospital wristband, despite already being home. “Chip started a tradition with Drake where he wore the hospital bracelet until it fell off…looks like the tradition lives on. #5,” the caption explains.

Despite wanting to enjoy the fleeting time with her new baby, Joanna has learned that the days don’t all have to so momentous. “The older I get, the more I realize it doesn’t have to be these huge moments where there’s art supplies everywhere and we have to really plan this out,” Joanna said.

“It can be something as simple as drive around with fun music. And so what I love in watching Chip, it inspires me to go beyond my comfort zone and find creative but also simple ways to connect with the kids.”
