With over 400 National Parks in the United States, whether you’re into exploring hiking trails, camping, going on scavenger hunts, or even soaking in hot springs, there’s an open space out there that you’ll love. If you have a 4th grader in your crew, be sure to snag the free national parks pass that’s good for their whole 4th-grade year. Another way to get in free is to visit during free national park days or choose a park that’s always free.
With a huge increase in visitors to national parks in recent years, some have instituted a reservation system during peak weekends and summer months. Be sure to check for this before you visit! Keep reading to see our favorite family-friendly parks, along with insider tips to help you make the most of your visit.
What to See & Do: Located around 4 hours from both San Francisco and Los Angeles, Sequoia National Park is home to the famous General Sherman Tree (the world's largest tree by volume). Also not to be missed is The Congress Trail—a 2.7-mile paved hike that loops through the forest where you'll get up close and personal with other famous sequoias like The President, The House, and the Senate—jaw-droppingly beautiful trees that have called this micro-climate home for the past 2,500 years or so.
Tips & When to Go: Open year-round, there's no bad time of year to see these gentle giants. In the winter, you can snowshoe among the trees (some roads may be closed due to conditions) while in the summer, you can spend more time and camp inside the national park if you desire. Weekdays are less crowded than weekends. To help plan your trip, read our insider's guide to visiting Visalia and Sequoia National Park.
From the river bed of the Rio Grande to the peaks of the Chisos mountain range, this remote park runs along the Texas/Mexico border.
What to See & Do: Designated as one of the darkest places in the country, it’s one of the best places to stargaze with your kids. It’s also filled with fossils—be sure to take your dino enthusiast to the Fossil Discovery Exhibit. There are also plenty of hiking opportunities for families: some of the best trails for kids include the Window View, the Basin Loop, the Rio Grande Village Nature Trail, and for older kids, the Lost Mine Trail is worth the trek. One of the most popular things to do in Big Bend, however, is to float the Rio Grande. There are several outfitters that offer easy, half-day floats, like this Madera to Grassy Banks option from Big Bend River Tours, which are perfect for families with young children.
Tips & When to Go: Cell service can be spotty, but free, public WiFi is available at the Panther Junction Visitor Center, the Chisos Mountains Lodge, and the Rio Grande Village Store. The best time to go is Sept.-May, as it gets very hot in the summer.
Famed for its granite domes and ancient sequoia trees, Yosemite is a gold mine for families.
Things to See & Do: Filled with hundreds of miles of hiking trails, two favorites include the Tuolomne Grove Nature Trail because you are rewarded with some massive Giant Sequoias, including the one you can walk through, and the Mist Trail as you have the opportunity to see two waterfalls. Make sure you set aside some time to spend exploring Yosemite Village. Grab some lunch and souvenirs at the gift shop (it is huge—perfect to stock up on everything from hot cocoa to wine to grilling supplies). Take a break to watch the Spirit of Yosemite film at the visitor center to give the kids all the background info on Yosemite and how it came to be a national park.
The Yosemite Museum has hands-on exhibits where kids can learn all about the cultural history of Yosemite’s native Miwok and Paiute people from 1850 to the present. If you are lucky, you may even be able to see traditional skills presented by historians. Outside you can walk through a replica Miwok village to see how they lived.
Tips & When to Go: The park is open year-round, with seasonal activities, but May and Sep. are less crowded.
Sandstone cliffs, slot canyons, and animal wildlife are all part of the wonder of Zion National Park in Utah. You’ll want to give yourselves plenty of time at this scenic destination to take it all in.
Things to See & Do: Try a kid-friendly hike, like The Grotto Trail, Weeping Rock Trail, or the Emerald Pool Trail. While at the Emerald Pool trail, be sure to check out the gorgeous waterfall views. For a fun way for families to learn more about Zion together, head over to the Nature Center. Daily from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, youth programs specifically for children and families are offered, and last 30-45 minutes, so they're just the right length for your mini explorers.
Tips & When to Go: Zion National Park is open year-round. Some services or facilities may have limited hours at various times of the year.
Located in Maine, Acadia National Park offers trails along the granite shoreline that seem to rise from the sea. There are plenty of opportunities to learn about lobsters or search for harbor seals, the cool freshwater lakes, and frothy saltwater tidal invite exploring, and there are plenty of yummy lobster dinners within reach.
What to See & Do: Acadia offers families dozens of activities beyond hiking (though the hiking is both excellent and most often very family-friendly), which everyone will love. Pack your bikes for rides along the network of Carriage Roads, and blow their minds at Thunder Hole, a partially submerged cave that booms about an hour before high tide.
Tips & When to Go: While there is plenty to do for visitors of all ages and abilities, much of Acadia’s landscape is very rugged. If you’ve got wee ones in tow, a child’s backpack carrier just might save the trip. Late summer and early fall offer warm days, fewer crowds, and typically chilly evenings, making it the perfect time for a visit.
From mountain waterfalls to ice-cold streams running through rhododendron-laced valleys, the Smokies are full of crystal-clear swimming holes, easy and moderate hikes for all legs, and scenic drives. In addition to being a great national park for kids, this park offers free admission year-round.
What to See & Do: Getting to the Smokies is relatively easy from any place in the southeast, and it’s easily accessible from both Tennessee and North Carolina. Pigeon Forge and Sevierville are both mountain towns just outside of the park and offer plenty of lodging and entertainment options for families looking to neon-light their vacation. A true naturalist would be hard-pressed to find anything wrong with the Smokies, and it’s equally suited for families who prefer to balance their bouts with nature with outlet shopping, live entertainment, and restaurants (all available just outside the park).
Tips & When to Go: It’s rare to have a true off-peak season in the Smokies, so if you’re looking for isolation this isn’t the park for you. However, solitude can be found inside the boundaries of the park, and we recommend going in the early spring to catch the incredible display of ephemeral wildflowers in bloom. Or, go in the fall around the second or third weekend of October to see the brilliant fall leaves.
Explore the coastline and see wild horses on this island sanctuary.
What to See & Do: Since the park is located on a 37-mile-long barrier island, this spot is ideal for beach-loving families. Look for shells, kayak, play in the ocean, or visit one of the centers for a nature program and to experience the marine life touch tanks. Camping is a popular lodging option here, there are several sites, and reservations are required during portions of the year.
Tips & When to Go: Be sure to keep a distance of 40 feet from the wild horses. The park is open year-round, and visitors peak in July, to watch the horses swim the channel, but insects like mosquitos and gnats thrive in the humid summer months. Spring and fall are lovely times to visit.
The third-largest national park in the lower 48 states spans 2,400 miles and offers a respite from cold winter temps elsewhere in the country.
What to See & Do: The dry winter season here means more animals to spot (hello, alligators and manatees!), more ranger programs to attend (think: hikes, bikes, and talks), and way fewer mosquitos than you and the kiddos would find any other time of year. Ride bikes, take a boat tour (most of the park is only accessible by boat), or set up camp before the wet season hits.
The dramatic landscape of Badlands has an otherworldly feel that has to be seen to be believed. With a combination of impressive rock formations and beautiful grasslands, this South Dakota spot is worth a visit as it’s one of our top national parks for kids.
What to See & Do: Drive Badlands Loop Road and stop at a few of the overlooks for jaw-dropping views. Popular with kids, the quarter-mile Fossil Exhibit Trail winds along a boardwalk and features fossil replicas. Along with the Junior Ranger program in the Ben Reifel Visitor Center, kids can also check out the interactive exhibits and visit the theater to watch the film Land of Stone and Light. In the summertime, families can get a close-up view of the night sky through telescopes on Friday through Monday nights at the evening ranger program.
Tips & When to Go: Badlands is open year-round, although the visitor center is closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. Summertime offers additional programs such as the Night Sky program, evening ranger programs, guided hikes, and talks.
Although not as well known as some other parks, Cuyahoga Valley is an ideal spot to watch changing foliage, colorful wildflowers and wildlife. Nestled between Cleveland and Akron, Ohio, this midwestern park may become a new favorite.
Things to See & Do: To see a magical view of Blue Hen Falls, the Blue Hen Falls Trail is an easy hike that the whole family can do together. At half a mile and just under thirty minutes, it’s a great intro trail and leads to the peaceful waterfall. You can also try birdwatching, canoeing and a whole schedule of summer events including train rides on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, ranger-led hikes and wildlife walks.
Tips & When to Go: The park is open every day, although some areas close at dusk for the night. Wildflowers are in bloom in mid to late summer.
If you’ve got a dino lover in your house, then Dinosaur National Monument is a definite stop for your list. Inside the Quarry Hall, the kids can check out over 1,500 real preserved dinosaur fossils that are sure to fascinate them. Next, move on to see some petroglyphs and pictographs as you drive the 10-mile Tour of Tilted Rocks. You’ll also find hiking, river rafting, and ranger-guided programs.
Tips & When to Go: Dinosaur National Monument is open every day all year, but during the winter, some roads and facilities are closed. The Quarry Visitor Center and Quarry Exhibit Hall are only open at certain times, so check the website before heading on your trip. In the summertime, temperatures can easily climb over 100 degrees, so take plenty of water, sunscreen, and a hat.
Located only 75 miles outside of Washington, D.C., and with over 100 miles of scenic highway, this park is perfect for families who love a good road trip. Skyline Drive is the main (and only) drag through the park, and the 75 overlooks of the Shenandoah Valley are swoon-worthy.
What to See & Do: The Shenandoah National Park’s Scenic Drive ensures that you will see splendid views and have every opportunity to get out and explore the park since nearly all trailheads are located a short distance from the road. This is the perfect park for families with good car seat travelers!
Tips & When to Go: Because they leave the fields in the Shenandoah National Park unplowed to purposely propagate the wildflowers that bloom there, you are guaranteed to see an incredible show year-round.
Located in Hot Springs, Arkansas, the Hot Springs National Park is the only park that had a city grow up around it. Known for its bubbling mineral springs and their restorative and healing powers, you can still bathe in them today in one of the restored historic bathhouses.
What to See & Do: While the springs have been around for ages, the amenities have continued to improve. You can bathe in the mineral waters from the comfort of a modern-day spa after spending a morning hiking one of the park's 26 miles of trails. And did we mention that there’s a diamond mine only an hour away in Murfreesboro?
Tips & When to Go: We like the idea of a nice, hot mineral spring bath on a cool spring day, don’t you? The bathhouses are open year-round, but Arkansas heats up in the summer and we suggest going during one of the cooler months.
You can see beaches, rainforests, and mountains at this beautiful park in the Pacific Northwest. Olympic National Park holds a little something for everyone.
What to See & Do: On the coast, kids four and up can be “Ocean Stewards” and earn a badge for completing activities. You can also explore tide pools, try any number of family hiking trails or spend some time on Rialto Beach. For evening fun, join one of the Night Sky programs, such as stargazing or full moon hikes at Hurricane Ridge.
Tips & When to Go: June through September are the most popular times to visit. Although the park is most crowded during these times, the park also has the most facilities and programs available. The park is still a show-stopping sight in winter, but check the website for weather and road conditions first.
Lava Beds National Monument is a must-visit spot when you bring the family to Siskiyou County in Northern California. Here you can check out free flashlights from the visitor center and explore the many (VERY DARK) caves that were formed when lava flowed through the area thousands of years ago. For the youngest explorers, check out Mushpot Cave just a short walk from the visitor center. This is the only cave that has its own lighting in the tunnel.
What to See & Do: Skull Cave (pictured above) is a popular choice because of its massive size. A good lighting source will be needed if you want to venture all the way down to the cave's ice floor (the flashlights from the visitor center can be pretty dim so you might want to bring your own).
Tips & When to Go: Summer is a great time to visit Lava Beds. Remember that even though it might be in the 90s above ground that it will be very chilly when you head into the caves so long pants/long sleeves are recommended. There's no restaurant at the park so bring in lunch with you when you visit. Check out our guide to visiting Siskiyou County with kids for lots of other tips including where to visit the petroglyphs!
While not an official national park, Indiana Dunes still offers visitors over 15 miles of protected lakeshore and 48 miles of trails—some within sight of the Chicago skyline!
What to See & Do Lake Michigan’s sandy shoreline includes dunes that reach as high as 125 feet tall, and its National Lakeshore status has protected its natural beauty from development and commercialization. If you decide to explore the dunes, just be sure to stay on the marked trails to protect the natural habitat!
Tips & When to Go Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is a perfect spot for a picnic, day hike or day at the beach from the moment the sun starts shining in the spring until the last leaves have fallen in autumn.
Located in central Kentucky, Mammoth Cave is the world’s longest-known cave system. Experience the underground adventure with cave tours, trails, and more.
What to See & Do: You’ll find over 84 miles of hiking trails suitable for all different levels, so find the one that works best for your family and get ready to explore. A variety of cave tours are also available so you can see Mammoth Cave up close and personal. The Frozen Niagara is a popular cave tour for families with young kids. Lasting an hour and 15 minutes, the tour is ideal for small hikers at just about a quarter of a mile. Reservations are strongly recommended, but not required.
Tips & When to Go: The cave is open year-round, and the Visitor Center’s hours vary by season.Cave temperatures are between the 50s and 60s but can become much colder in the winter. When touring the caves, flash photography is not permitted. Strollers and child backpack carriers are also not permitted on cave tours, so make sure young ones are up for the walk.
Mountain scenery, glacier-chiseled lakes, and tons of activities greet you at this stunning park in Montana.
What to See & Do: Visit the Apgar Nature Center so kids can play and learn with various interactive activities, ranger talks, and children’s programs. Take in the scenery and look for wildlife as you drive the 50-mile Going to the Sun road. As an alternative, you can use the free shuttle along Going to the Sun Road between the nature center and the St. Mary Visitor Center. You’ll also want to make sure to make time to explore the park with a hike. Plenty of trails are popular with children, such as Trail of the Cedars, Hidden Lake Nature Trail or the Oxbow Trail. After you’ve worked up an appetite, don’t forget to make a stop for a scoop of huckleberry ice cream! A Glacier must.
Tips & When to Go: Glacier is open every day of the year, although hours at visitor stations vary by season. Summer is the most popular season to visit. Weather-related events may affect Going to the Sun Road plowing and opening, so follow the park’s current road status to get the latest information.
Little fossil fans will love imagining past prehistoric days and dinosaurs as they explore the Painted Desert landscape of Petrified Forest National Park.
What to See & Do: Be sure to make a stop at the Rainbow Forest Museum where your kids will enjoy the interactive exhibits and skeleton displays. From the museum parking area, you can find the trailhead for the Agate House trail, a two-mile trek with a paved portion, leading to an old pueblo made of petrified wood. At the Painted Desert Visitor Center, you’ll find an orientation video, a restaurant, gift shop, and plenty of information about the park.
Tips & When to Go: Petrified Forest National Park is open year-round, with the exception of December 25th. However, visitor center hours and park road hours vary by season.
Visiting White Sands feels a little bit like running through a dream. Acres and acres of soft white gypsum sand dunes will have the kids running, rolling and sliding for hours.
What to See & Do: Hit the Visitor Center first to learn all about how White Sands formed, and then head out to experience it! The eight-mile ride down Dunes Drive will take you to the center of the dune field. Sleds can be purchased at the Visitor Center, and little ones (and adults!) will love the chance to take a slide down. Sledding is permitted in the loop area of Dunes Drive. The Visitor Center also has a Junior Rangers program, a gift shop and a native plant garden. Kids can also check out an Adventure Pack for the day, containing binoculars, field guides, a compass and other items to help them explore the dunes.
Tips & When to Go: White Sands is open daily all through the year, with the exception of December 25. The monument occasionally closes for inclement weather or unsafe road conditions. Hours vary depending on the season, so check the website for the latest times. Pack sunglasses and don’t forget the sunscreen, because the sun shining off of those white dunes is bright.
Be wowed by the active volcanoes of Kilauea and Mauna Loa on Hawaii’s Big Island!
Things to See & Do: Start at the Visitor Center and check out the video Born of Fire, Born of the Sea. You’ll want to cruise the main road of Crater Rim Drive, where you’ll find tons of scenic stops to admire, such as Kilauea Overlook for unbeatable views. Swing by the Jaggar Museum where you can learn all about lava, seismographs and everything volcano-related. Finally, take your flashlights and explore the magnitude of Nahuku, the Thurston Lava Tube.
Tips & When to Go: The park is open year-round, including all holidays. The park contains two active volcanoes, so safety is always a priority. Stay up to date on volcanic activity and air quality before visiting by checking the park’s website.
Joshua Tree’s beautiful desert landscapes, nature trails and Dr. Seuss-like trees make this park a consistent favorite for families. It’s definitely worth a stop on your next California journey.
What to See & Do: You’ll find plenty of short trails and nature walks that won’t be too strenuous for small hikers. The Bajada, Cap Rock, Hidden Valley, and Cholla Cactus Garden are loop trails that are all one mile long or shorter and take an hour or less to complete. Let the kids pose for a photo with the appropriately named Skull Rock, located along the main park road. If you’re there at night, don’t miss the chance to gaze up at some unbelievable stars.
Tips & When to Go: Joshua Tree can get extremely hot in the summer, so a spring visit might be more comfortable, weather-wise. You’re in the desert, so plenty of water is also a must!
Yellowstone is definitely one for your national parks list! With geysers, hiking trails, animals, and forests on display, this gorgeous park is a can’t-miss stop on your road trip.
What to See & Do: No trip to Yellowstone is complete without a visit to Old Faithful, the world’s most famous geyser. Take a stroll on the boardwalks around the geyser, and then stop by the Visitor Center to find out when the next eruption is scheduled to take place! You can get a great look and a photo op from the viewing area nearby. While you’re in the Visitor Center, kids can sign up for the Yellowstone Junior Ranger program, where they can earn a badge after completing a series of activities around the park.
Grand Prismatic is another stunning feature on your Yellowstone trip. The park’s largest hot spring boasts bright colors that almost seem unreal. The boardwalk surrounding Grand Prismatic does get crowded, so hold tight to little hands as you check out this amazing thermal feature.
Driving into Yellowstone, you’ll catch some great wildlife sightings, and maybe even a bison crossing, which is always a thrill for little ones.
Tips & When to Go: Summer offers a ton of available activities but is by far Yellowstone’s busiest season, so expect crowds and a slow drive into the park. Spring, summer and winter offer fewer crowds, but some roads and activities are not available depending on weather, so keep up to date on Yellowstone’s website and plan your trip well in advance. We also love visiting in the winter via snowcoach!
With over 2,000 natural stone arches, beautiful red rock formations, and hikes for all ages, Arches National Park is a treat for the whole family.
What to See & Do: Drive through the park to catch a glimpse of some of the famous arches, and stop for strolls and photos. Kids will love Balanced Rock, a gravity-defying structure with a short loop trail that is perfect for small hikers. Another great spot for your little road trippers is Sand Dune Arch. With a 0.3-mile hike and tons of soft sand to play in, kids will have a blast making a detour here.
Tips & When to Go: March through October is the park’s busiest season, so expect crowds and longer lines to drive into the park. Rangers programs are offered in spring, summer, and fall, and the Visitor Center is open daily, except for December 25.
Kids love volcanos, and they’ll love that this lake formed from a volcano is also the deepest one in America. But there’s more to Crater Lake National Park than just the lake, and you’ll want to hit the trails (and fishing holes, and swimming holes) before you wrap up your visit.
What to See & Do: Trying to spot the Phantom Ship (a rock formation along the rim) is worth the trip all by itself, and Crater Lake National Park also offers boat trips to Wizard Island. With its volcanic past, this park is perfect for littles with big imaginations.
Tips & When to Go: Accessible almost all year, Crater Lake is rarely overwhelmed by visitors, even in the summer. Go between July and September for the best weather (and best chance to get out and explore).
Located just off the coast of Ventura, California, Channel Islands National Park is the perfect family day trip. Accessible only by boat or plane, the Park includes five islands.
What to See & Do: Not only are the islands great to explore by foot or kayak, but the necessary boat ride to get there adds to the trip’s element of adventure. Since these islands are truly remote, don’t take anyone whose needs might exceed what you can carry in a backpack. Tiny tots and need-to-nappers might be better off going when they get a tad older.
Tips & When to Go: While the islands are open to visitors year-round, fall, with warmer water and animal migrations, is a sure bet for the WOW factor. Keep your eyes peeled for blue and humpback whales off the coast, and you’re sure to see dolphins as you make your way to the islands by boat.

With the gorgeous views, abundant nature, and nearby attractions, you won't even notice the cable TV. Start your day right with your complimentary welcome basket filled with fruit, muffins, and eggs before hiking around Point Reyes National Seashore. At night after the kiddos are off in dreamland, you can stargaze from the hot tub in your private garden. There is a two-night minimum stay, although one-night weekday stays can be arranged for special occasions. This place books fast, so check their calendar in advance.
You may be familiar with Wildhaven's creekside campground in Wine Country, but did you know that they recently added a campground near Yosemite? You'll find cabins that sleep up to five people as well as safari tents for the warmer summer days. You'll be blown away by the expansive property that has none of the dreary and dark vibes that campgrounds often have in this area. Instead, expect rolling hills with stunning views at the property that's just a 5-minute drive from downtown Mariposa and just over an hour from the closest Yosemite entrance. Yosemite Bug Rustic Mountain Resort | Midpines, CA
Families looking for the perfect combination of rustic and convenient will love the Yosemite Bug. Located in Midpines on the road between Mariposa and the El Portal entrance, you'll be perfectly located for Yosemite adventures. The Yosemite Bug offers lots of different lodging options—cabins, rooms with private bathrooms, rooms with shared bathrooms, glamping tents, camping spots, and even hostel rooms. There's also an onsite spa.
Yosemite Bug has trails on the property that will lead you down to a waterfall and swimming hole (be careful as the trails are steep and difficult for little ones). You can rent out snowshoes in the winter (as available). The kids will love the outdoor ping pong and foosball tables and parents will love that the rooms do not have TVs (because, nature!).
Part glamping adventure and part cowboy getaway, Greenhorn Ranch offers the best of both worlds to families who come back year after year (and once you experience it, you'll know why). Horseback riding gets center stage at this ranch in the Lost Sierra that's just four hours from the Bay Area. Saturday night BBQs are a highlight so make sure you book your stay over the weekend. Families will love the rustic elegance of the creekside cabins that will sleep up to six people.

Evergreen Lodge at Yosemite
Kate Loweth
If you are looking for modern conveniences in a woodsy setting, pick Evergreen Lodge for your next stay when you visit Yosemite. Right now, Evergreen Lodge is celebrating 100 years of welcoming families to Yosemite and it's the perfect time to visit. The property is located about 10 minutes off highway 120 on the road that takes you to Hetch Hetchy Reservoir. You'll feel like you are totally away from it all when you visit.
Accommodations include cabins of every size including the two-bedroom family cabins that we definitely recommend for those visiting with little ones. You'll get a bedroom with a king-size bed, another with two twins, and a central living room with a pull-out couch. Custom camping is also available if you really want to get a taste of the outdoors.
You need to check out the brand-new Explorer Cabins at Tenaya Lodge as families love them. The picturesque cabin development combines the refined comforts of a modern cabin, personalized service, and the perks of a full-service resort—all in a pristine mountain setting. At 650 square feet, the “mountain modern” cabins sleep up to six guests and include a living room, kitchen area, two bedrooms, and a private deck from which to unwind after a day of adventure. The family cabins, outfitted with bunk beds in the second bedroom, are nestled in the interior areas and grouped for easy socialization and community gathering. Kids will especially love the Kids Adventure Course, archery, flashlight hikes, and mountain bikes available for rent.

Nestled on 35 acres in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the Yosemite property features 80 deluxe Airstream trailers as well as 15 luxury tents and three cabins. Airstreams can accommodate up to two adults and two kids (queen bed + pull-out sofa) and the cabins sleep up to five. Stargazing events and nature talks among other programming are available. YARTS shuttle service will take you from the property into Yosemite so that you don't have to worry about jockeying for a parking spot. Forgot something? Head to the AutoCamp Shop for all the essentials.
Venture up to Amador County for some glamping along the shore of Lake Camanche. With both cottages and vacation homes available to rent, there's something for families of all sizes. The cottages include fully-equipped kitchens and a large deck for enjoying the outdoors. The vacation homes can accommodate up to 12 people and include a kitchen, washer/dryer, outdoor dining area, and even a TV. Lake Camanche offers swimming, watersports, fishing, summer movie nights, and more.
Big Sur's heavenly mix of forested mountains, rugged coastline, and lack of cell service make it the ideal locale for getting away. But even if you wanted to sleep on the ground in a tent, scoring a summer spot in the popular Pfieffer Big Sur State Park can feel like trying to win the lottery. Just up the road, and with access to the same trees and beautiful coastal amenities, is the Fernwood Resort. Their tent cabins run alongside the Big Sur River and come with raised beds, picnic tables and fire pits, and access to the camp store and the Fernwood Bar & Grill, for when you don't feel like grilling.
The cabins are a great option for families who don't want the hassle of setting up a tent. Each cabin comes with a fire ring and an outdoor picnic table. The on-site general store has literally anything you'd need from ice cream to water shoes for the river.
If you have never brought the kids to a KOA for camping then you are in for a real treat. This spot near Manresa State Beach and the Santa Cruz Boardwalk offers Deluxe Cabins with bunk beds or a sleeping loft for the kids and brand-new Glamping Cabins that are perfect for a romantic getaway. The Santa Cruz/Monterey Bay KOA's activity park includes an outdoor ping pong table, climbing statues, KOA jumping pillow, and a pool.
Perhaps the best part of a KOA is that there are loads of activities for kids that are hosted by on-site counselors (translation: parents can relax). Get strapped in to climb the coconut palm trees, watch movies under the stars, and enjoy s'mores without the cleanup!

Head south on the 101 and just past San Luis Obispo you'll be in the Santa Ynez Valley, a picturesque spot to plan a weekend getaway. Flying Flags RV Resort and Campground takes glamping to a whole other level with swimming pools, a splash park, a playground, an on-site restaurant, WiFi, and even a dog park for Fido. The family-friendly cottages with loft sleep up to six people and include a full kitchen so that you don't have to eat out for every meal. The property also has safari tents, Airstreams, and cabins, as well as tent and RV camping spots. Nearby attractions include OstrichLand, wine tasting galore, and the adorable town of Solvang.
With words like “spa” and “eco-adventure” in the description, you might think Costanoa was a retreat for grown-ups. And you'd be right, but this place understands that kids need a break from the daily grind, too. Drop your kids in a two-hour nature-themed camp on weekends and Wednesdays, then check into the spa for a massage, head out on the adjacent trails on bike or horse (rentals of both available on site), or just crawl back in bed with a good book (or iPad: even the tent cabins are equipped with free Wi-Fi). There are many levels of "roughing it" here. There's also a KOA campground on site, for tents and RVs. Shared Comfort Stations throughout the campground offer clean bathrooms, showers, and dry saunas.

Getting There
Kate Loweth
Just over three hours north of San Francisco, the drive to Mendocino County can definitely be part of the adventure. A less windy route takes you from 101 to exit at Railroad Avenue where you head to toward Bodega Bay on the coast. Cows, horses and goats will keep the kids entertained along the way. Stop at Bodega Bay Oyster Company for some local shellfish. If you time your arrival for Saturday or Sunday noon-4 p.m., they will be serving up barbecued oysters!
Bodega Bay is another great stop along your drive. Bribe the kids with taffy from Patrick's Salt Water Taffy (pink building on the coastal side of Highway 1 in Bodega Bay) and then grab some fried artichokes with a gorgeous view at The Birds Cafe.
Stock up for your Mendocino visit with a stop at Surf Market in Gualala. In addition to picnic staples like local cheese, bread and sandwich fixings, you can purchase some fresh fish or sausage from their extensive meat counter to cook up for your dinner.
If you are to driving through Anderson Valley don't miss The Apple Farm. Head off the main road for just a moment on the way into Hendy Woods State Park and you will find this adorable farm stand were they serve delicious apple cider and offer hard cider tastings on the weekend. Be sure to grab a bottle of the non-alcoholic variety to sip as your finish your drive through the redwoods. The Apple Farm also has overnight accommodations.
Adventures

Skunk Train – Fort Bragg All aboard! Fort Bragg is where you can catch the Skunk Train for a ride through the redwoods along Pudding Creek. This train (so named because oldsters claimed that you could smell it coming before you'd see it) has both indoor cars and an outdoor car so that you can walk around and make the most of your ride. The Pudding Creek Express is a one-hour, 7-mile round trip tour that takes you over the first tracks laid down by the California Western Railroad. Snacks and beverages (including beer and wine) are available for purchase on the train.
Kids will love the experience of riding the railbikes and we totally recommend it for families. Two riders are seated on a double recumbent bike that rests right on the train tracks. With power-assisted pedaling, you and your partner make your way along the tracks for a 30-minute ride. When you get to your destination, you have some time to take a hike in the woods or grab a snack before you head back into town.
After your ride, check to see if the Mendocino Coast Model Railroad is open for visitors. Your Skunk Train ticket will get you in to check out over 1,300 feet of track that document the area's logging history. You may have trouble getting the little LEGO lovers past the kid-level train table out front (strategically placed to let them touch the LEGO trains and not the model trains inside).
Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens – Fort Bragg Color is everywhere at the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens. The succulent garden offers colorful cactus and spots to sit and enjoy your afternoon. March and April bring the fragrant rhododendrons that thrive in this coastal climate. Come in the summer and the vegetable garden will be full of life. Stop by to see if any strawberries are ripe and try one for yourself.
Russian Gulch State Park – Mendocino There are tons of state park options to get your redwood fix in Mendocino County. Russian Gulch State Park offers a view of a collapsed sea cave called Devil’s Punchbowl just a short walk from the parking lot (high tide provides the most drama). If you have more time to spend in the park, hike the Fern Canyon Loop Trail to check out the waterfall.

Catch a Canoe & Bicycles Too - Mendocino Nestled in a small cove on Big River Estuary, just before it flows into Mendocino Bay, is the adventure destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Established in 1982, Catch a Canoe and Bicycles Too offers ultra-stable redwood outriggers, kayaks, canoes, SUP and bicycle rentals for anyone who wants to explore beautiful Big River and beyond. Cruise down the water to see seal or otters on shore and plenty of birds catching fish. You can even bring Fido along on the Canine Cruiser, a specially-designed rig that allows dogs to see all the action.
Ross Ranch Horseback Riding - Manchester Go for a horseback ride on the beach or through the redwoods with the skilled horses of Ross Ranch. Kids 6 and up can participate in this experience (we highly recommend the beach ride!) that lasts about 1.5 hours in the saddle. You'll take a slow pace down to the sand where the horses will walk along a gorgeous and nearly-deserted beach.
Ford House Museum – Mendocino If you've got some history buffs in your crew, definitely plan to stop at the Ford House Museum in Mendocino. Here you can take a look at a huge diorama depicting the town as it stood in 1890 (count how many water towers you can find!). Check out the whale bones and learn how whales use baleen to filter feed in the waters off Mendocino.
Kate Loweth
B. Bryan Preserve – Point Arena Did you know that Mendocino County is home to giraffes, antelopes and zebras? Around 100 of these majestic animals live at B. Bryan Preserve in Point Arena and you can bring the kids there for a visit. They are currently offering self-guided car tours and guided tours aboard a 1974 open-air Land Rover where you can learn how they breed critically-endangered and endangered African hoof stock. You can even spend the night in one of the on-site cottages.
Point Arena Lighthouse – Point Arena Get a bit of a history lesson along with a gorgeous view of the coastline when you visit the Point Arena Lighthouse. This non-profit that is completely dependent on visitors is a great place to spend the afternoon. Begin your visit at the museum where you can learn the history of the lighthouse and see the original 1908 First Order Fresnel lens that was removed from the lighthouse in 2009. Learn how the lighthouse keepers were responsible for keeping the light going and cleaning every nook and cranny of the lens. Head to the whale watch room where you can borrow some binoculars to try and spot a gray whale offshore. After your museum visit, climb the 145 steps to the top of the tallest lighthouse tower on the West Coast where you will get a 360 degree view of the coastline along with an informative lesson from the tour guide there.
Pennyroyal Farm – Boonville Take your trip home via Highway 128 so that you can pass through Boonville, home to Pennyroyal Farm. This farmstead creamery and winery offers daily tours of the barn where you can meet the goats and sheep that live there. Learn all of their names (yes, each one has a name!), how these animals are raised and how their milk is turned into cheese. Time your visit with lambing season in the spring for an extra-special treat. Your tour ends with a wine and cheese tasting for the parents and a grape juice and cheese tasting for the kids.
Beaches and Tide Pools
Kate Loweth
Bowling Ball Beach – Point Arena Bowling Ball Beach is so named because of the massive bowling ball-shaped formations that line the beach when the tide is low. These are concretions—sedimentary rock formed when mineral cements bind grains of sand or stone into larger formations. You can access the trail to Bowling Ball Beach at mile marker 11.41 where the sign reads "Park facing south only." Here, take the northern path across the bluffs and follow the stairs down. At the bottom, you will likely have to scramble across downed logs to access the beach. Just take it slow and the adventure will be worth it!
Glass Beach– Fort Bragg Treasure hunters flock to Glass Beach to search the sands for glass made smooth by years of riding the waves offshore. From 1906 to 1967, everything from cars to batteries to bottles, cans and appliances were unceremoniously pushed over the cliffs into the ocean. Mother Nature turned this trash into treasure of tiny sea glass. Get the kids to search for colors from clear to the more rare reds and blues. Just make sure that all treasures get left behind for the next visitor to enjoy. As with all California State Parks, the glass found at Glass Beach is protected and should not be taken home.
MacKerricher State Park – Fort Bragg A prime spot for tide pools, MacKerricher State Park is just three miles from downtown Fort Bragg. Stop in at the visitors center when you arrive to feel pelts from animals that live in the area and see how your size compares to that of a whale. Then follow the map to the boardwalk and seal watching station. If you arrive when the tide is low, the area has a massive tide pool that will keep the kids busy for hours. Look for colorful sea stars and speedy sand crabs. Then venture on down the boardwalk to look for seals sunning themselves on the rocks.
Where to Eat
Kate Loweth
Mendocino has no shortage of great spots to grab a bite for the road or to enjoy a meal with a view. Frankie's offers the kid-favorite combo of pizza and ice cream. The thin crust cheese satisfies any kid appetite and the candy cap mushroom ice cream is a sweet treat for adventurous eaters. When the sun is out and the fog stays away, pick a spot on the deck at Flow Restaurant where the view is gorgeous and the fish tacos are a favorite. If you are looking for a family friendly fine dining experience MacCullum House Inn staff is happy to accommodate your kids pallet. Although the restaurant does not have a kids menu the chef is willing to adjust some items to be sure your kids find something they like and the banana split with house made ice cream is delightful.
In Fort Bragg's Noyo Harbor, the Harborview Restaurant at the Noyo Harbor Inn gets top billing for gorgeous views and delicious food to go along with it. Book a spot on the deck and just might spot a seal swimming by during your appetizer course. So fun! You can also head to the harbor itself for some of the freshest fish you've ever had. We loved the casual vibe on the outdoor deck at Noyo Fish Company (definitely get the fish tacos).
The quaint town of Point Arena has a tiny coffee shop, Little Green Bean, that offers tons of area recommendations while you wait for your beans to be ground and your pour-over drip coffee to brew. Head across the street to Franny's Cup and Saucer to satisfy your sweet tooth. Open Wednesday-Saturday, favorites at Franny's are the macarons, giant gingersnaps and not-to-be-missed Friday donuts. The Point Arena Wharf has a coffee shop so grab a cup of coffee and walk the pier, climb some rocks and look for sea creatures in the tide pools.
Where to Stay
Noyo Harbor Inn
Noyo Harbor Inn—Fort Bragg You'll love the location of the Noyo Harbor Inn for your visit to Mendocino and all the conveniences it offers. Located just above Noyo Harbor, you'll be off the main drag of Fort Bragg with views of the harbor right out your window. It's right down the street from the Skunk Train and Glass Beach, and just a short drive to the Point Cabrillo Lighthouse. Families will enjoy the spacious rooms with balconies, giant ensuite tubs and coffee maker/mini fridge. The on-site restaurant offers top-notch service and some of the best food in town. Make sure you request table on the deck for the best views.
Inn at Schoolhouse Creek—Little River If you want some extra space to spread out, a kitchen to cook up some farm-fresh eggs in the morning and a quaint cottage to call home, this is your spot. The Inn at Schoolhouse Creek offers cottages with different layouts to suit the needs of families of all sizes. On a recent visit we stayed in the Pomo Cottage that had a full kitchen, bedroom with king-sized bed, pull out couches that could sleep up to four people and a private hot tub for soaks under the sun. The property also has a spa (currently closed), BBQs for public use and a gorgeous property and creek for exploring. Dogs are also welcome!
Mendocino Grove – Mendocino Even though Mendocino Grove has only been open for a few years, they have glamping down. Safari tents on wooden platforms welcome you to this gorgeous area just five minutes from downtown Mendocino. There are two family tent options, queen bed with two twin beds (sleeps 4) and queen bed with four bunk beds that comfortably sleeps six. You'll be cozy for the night as they have bed warmers for all your campers. Each campsite has its own fire ring for campfires and you can purchase wood and s'mores kits on site.
Amenities that you'll love include spa-quality bathrooms and hot showers. Wake up to coffee, oatmeal, and hot chocolate at the community area in the center of the camp, with additional items for purchase. Mendocino Grove has bocce ball, hammocks, hiking trails and a volleyball court to keep the kiddies busy. Depending on when you stay you may be able to enjoy a free concert, participate in a yoga class, or support local farmers with their Farmer Dinner Series. For some on-the-water time, walk down the hill to Catch-a-Canoe to rent a kayak or outrigger canoe for the morning.
The Little River Inn – Little River Located right in the middle of all the Mendocino County action, the Little River Inn knows what keeps families happy when they are away from home. Each room on this property has rocking chairs with a view of the coast and if you are lucky, some amazing sunsets. Rooms are equipped with a small fridge, Keurig coffee maker, TV and WiFi. Borrow a game or movie from the front desk to keep the kids entertained, or hike down the trail to the nearby beach. Golf, tennis and spa services are also available on site. If you choose to stay in one of the onsite cottages you may even be able to enjoy a coastal view from your private hot tub. Definitely pick up a box of their fudge and a bag of their cookies when you check in.
The hotel's restaurant offers both breakfast and dinner with a view of the crashing waves or the hotel's beautiful garden. Breakfast choices include Ole's Swedish Hotcakes (the short stack is still big enough to share), Little River Inn scones and loads of egg options. If you are there for Sunday brunch, make sure you ask for your complimentary glass of champagne. For dinner, kids can choose from options like the monster burger (which really is quite large) or fish and chips. Give yourself a few extra minutes of peaceful dining and ask for their coloring packet—a dozen-page booklet that gives the history of Mendocino County and area highlights, all for you to color!
Point Arena Lighthouse Vacation Cottages – Point Arena For a truly coastal experience, you can stay right at the Point Arena Lighthouse in one of their six vacation cottages. Three of them comfortably sleep six people with three bedrooms and two bathrooms. They come with a well-equipped kitchen, satellite TV, wood-burning fireplace and the most gorgeous coastal views. Wake up to hear the waves crashing against the rocks and spend your days exploring the 23 acres of land adjacent to the lighthouse.
MacCallum House is a boutique hotel and restaurant in the heart of the town of Mendocino. This Victorian home is surrounded by beautiful gardens and has 19 rooms in the main house. In addition to the main house the inn offers a variety of accommodations including a stay in the historic barn, cottages, suites and more. Many of the spaces include fireplaces, hot tubs, and ocean views. With so many options you are sure to find the perfect room accommodations for your family. The MacCallum House Restaurant is part of California's original farm-to-table and chef-driven dining movement and provides a delicious taste of local, fresh and seasonal cuisine.
Spend the day at one of these kid-friendly beaches around Los Angeles
Hitting the beach is one of our favorite, free things to do in LA but when you google “kid friendly beaches near me” or “best beach for kids near me” you’ll get a lot of suggestions that are well, not the best. We’ve gone out and did a little digging (pun intended) to find and report back on the best beaches for families near LA—not just any old beach will do for our SoCal babes. For toddlers to teens and everyone in between, here’s our favorite kid-friendly beaches from Malibu to Long Beach.
One of the best beaches in LA for families, Leo Carrillo State Park has plenty of space spread out without the crowds. Added bonus? When the tide goes out, you'll also find some of LA's best tide pools and sea caves for kids to play and explore. Another bonus for families that have a dog? Swing up to North Beach (north of lifeguard tower 3) to one of the few beaches in the county where you won’t have to leave your four-legged friend behind—just don’t forget the leash. Want to spend more than just the day here? Make a reservation at one of the campgrounds available along the beach—just check the website as things tend to change quickly.
Sticking with a day trip but don't think you'll spend all day on the sand? Here are some of our favorite fun things Malibu has to offer.
35000 West Pacific Coast Hwy. Malibu Online:parks.ca.gov/
Not necessarily a secret but for some guaranteed calm, soft, sandy beaches without waves, head farther south to Bay Shore Beach. One of the best beaches for toddlers in all of LA, parents can relax here thanks to a lack of big waves but still have access to lots of amenities like a swim dock, a playground, a concession stand, paddle board rentals, plus public restrooms and showers. There is also free street parking on Bay Shore Drive.
Tucked at the end of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, Abalone Cove Shoreline Park offers two beaches (Abalone Cove & Sacred Cove), a State Ecological Preserve, tide pools, hiking trails and gorgeous views of Catalina Island on clear days. The hike down is easy but the hike back up can be a work out so plan to leave the beach just before the kids are all tuckered out—otherwise you will end up carrying them. One of our favorite spots with older kids and teens, the Rancho Palos Verdes beaches, are a tad rocky so don't forget to bring water shoes.
Insider Tip: Go during low tide to maximize tide pool exploration. Pay attention to the signs as some parts of the peninsula has been closed due to falling rocks.
5970 Palos Verdes Dr. South Rancho Palos Verdes Online:rpvca.gov
Located on the southern portion of Point Dume Beach in Malibu, this lovely stretch of sand is both private and picturesque and is one of the best kid beaches in California. While you might recognize it as a backdrop in Iron Man, the large cliffs provide a stunning backdrop for your family’s beach day. Hike up the Point Dume path and you may catch a glimpse of body surfing dolphins or climbers repelling the rocky cliff.
If you are looking for your own little adventure, there's a hidden sandy spot behind the southern rock wall called Pirates Cove Beach. The easiest way to access it is to time it with low tide and walk around the rock wall, otherwise you'll have to scramble over the rocks to access this secret spot.
Insider Tip: This north-facing beach’s surf breaks shallow and close to shore so make sure to keep an extra eye on beginning swimmers at the water’s edge.
Located within Robert H. Meyer Memorial State Park, kids can explore sea caves, tunnels and more rock formations. While not exactly a super secret (the Instagram crowd has definitely caught on to this photogenic spot), this beach is certainly less crowded than tourist hotspots like Santa Monica. Be prepared to trek down some steep stairs to make it to the sand—save this location for kids who can manage the steps. There is limited free parking on PCH or you can pay a fee to park in the lot.
Insider Tip: Check the tide levels before you go—during high tide, the water covers most of the beach, so you'll want to go when the tide's low.
About an hour north of Los Angeles, you'll find the sprawling, often nearly empty Hollywood Beach. Escape for the day to enjoy free parking, volleyball courts, plus plenty of space for kite flying and a long stretch of shore, perfect for little ones who love splashing in the waves. Not to mention, gorgeous views of the Channel Islands—you might even see whales migrating!
Insider Tip: Ventura County is great, family-friendly destination. To extend your day trip, check out what to do with kids in Ventura.

We’ve got a hot air balloon, zipline, and water park on this list
Orange County may be best known for Disneyland and Disney California Adventure, but there are plenty of other fabulous things to do with kids when you’re planning an OC outing. How about one of SoCal’s best water parks? Or a Mexican restaurant that gives you fab views of Disneyland’s nightly fireworks (without having to pay to go into the park)? Or maybe a giant helium balloon that can take your family 400 feet up in the air? Or perhaps playing with sharks at Discovery Cube’s brand new Discovery Sea Lab is more your jam? Whatever your pleasure, the OC has you covered from “fun to done—and all of it’s worth the car ride.
Having re-opened one year ago, Wild Rivers has once again become one of SoCal’s best water parks by offering everything a seasoned water-slider could dream of—13 slick slides (including four, six-person raft slides that let you and the whole fam slip ‘n slide together); a wave pool; a quarter-mile lazy river; and a children’s area with four slides and an 800-gallon water-tipping bucket that lets kids get dumped on every four minutes. Littles will soak up every second of fun they can get, so slather on the sunblock and get ready to make the day of it. There are also three restaurants on-site to easily grab a bite when your brood gets hungry.
Insider’s Tip: Bring water shoes or flip-flops—the ground gets hot and there’s lots of walking. Hours:Open daily through Aug. 23 and open weekends through Oct. 1 (hours vary; check online for details) Cost: When purchased online, admission starts at $40 for kids under 48″; $54 for kids and adults 48″ and taller. Tickets are also available at the gate at an increased cost.
Got little couch climbers who need an outlet that won’t ruin your furniture? It’s time to put those Spidey skills to good use at the American Ninja Warrior Adventure Park. Picture 17,000 square feet of non-stop fun for kids (and grown-ups) who like to climb, jump, swing, and bounce while testing their athletic skills. Designed in collaboration with Universal Live Entertainment and inspired by the American Ninja Warrior TV show, the park invites participants to test their skills on a variety of obstacles including rock walls, rolling logs, swinging bars, high tunnels, and warped walls.
The space consists of The Traditional Ninja Warrior Course which models itself after the TV show with a series of skill-testing walls and obstacles, as well as a huge inflatable obstacle course. The inflatable section has a sprawling course of its own, including side-by-side racetracks so kids can battle each other.
Insider’s Tip: All ninjas must wear American Ninja Warrior Adventure Park toe-grip socks which are purchased upon booking online or at registration. Closed-toed shoes are required for ninjas who want to do the skills course Hours: Open daily, Sun – Thurs., 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.; Fri. and Sat., 10 a.m. – 9 p.m.; mini ninja sessions, 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. Cost: When purchased online, tickets are $14.95 per hour for kids 5 and under; $19.95 per hour for kids over 5 (or $29.95 for a 120-minute session)
This massive floating water park sits inside a crystal clear, freshwater lake that stays temperature-perfect year round. As the fourth largest inflatable obstacle course in the country, the aqua park lets kids bounce on trampolines, conquer tall climbing towers, slide down air slides, crawl through tunnels, balance on floating ladders, and leap through the air—all from atop a floating island parked a short swim from shore. For little swimmers, the Kid Zone features shallow water filled with water trampolines, slides, peddle-boats, and water “sea-saws.” When you’re done with the obstacle course, relax in the sand, swim in the lagoon, or rent a paddle board or kayak. (Note: Kayaks and paddle boards cost extra). Life jackets are also provided for all guests and lifeguards are on duty.
Insider’s Tip: Bring your own chairs to ensure a handy spot to sit in the sand Hours:Open daily now through Oct. 31 Cost: General admission is $45 for entrance to the lagoon plus a 55-minute session on the obstacle course
If you want to end your day with a bang, Calaca Mamas Cantina near Disneyland has one thing that really stands out from other restaurants—fireworks, baby! Their outdoor patio has a prime view of the Disneyland fireworks, which means if you time it right, you can get all the sparkle of Disney’s famous nighttime show without the hefty theme park price tag.
Fans of Disney’sCocowill recognize the restaurant’s Día de los Muertos theme. The space is filled with vibrant Day of the Dead decor, including skeleton art, skull-shaped planters, and an ofrenda featuring photos of people who have passed (they’re reportedly relatives of the staff, but look closely and you’ll also spot Walt Disney). The bright colors and vibrant festivity will only add to your meal as your fam noshes on light and flaky chicken flautas or the signature “Taco in a Bag,” which blends all of the traditional taco ingredients and tosses them into a Fritos bag. Finish with homemade churros served inside a mini churro cart alongside a huge sparkler candle.
Insider Tip: If you’re lucky, you’ll be treated to an appearance by the restaurant’s balloon artist who can twist balloons into any creation. Free validated 2.5-hour parking is also available at the Best Western next door.
Kids will be in make-believe heaven in this gorgeous little “city,” which gives kids small replicas of all the places they’d like to imagine themselves a part of. The 27,000-square-foot facility includes a slew of “sets” for kids to immerse themselves in, including a dentist’s office, police and fire stations, construction area, farm, stage theater, water play area, art studio, and grocery store. Suited mostly to toddlers and pretend-loving kids up to about age 7, your littles will love pedaling foot-powered cars through “downtown” and navigating the space on their own (it’s big enough that they won’t get bored, but small enough that you’ll be able to keep an easy eye on them).
Insider Tip: If your kids have outgrown their nap, you’re in luck—the slow time (i.e. best time to avoid crowds in the tiny grocery store) is 1-3 p.m. Hours:Tues. – Sun., 10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and 1:30-4 p.m., closed Mon. Cost:$19.95 for both adults and kids
Old-school boardwalk fun rules the day at Balboa Fun Zone in Newport Beach. Ride the iconic Ferris Wheel – in operation since 1936—and enjoy arcade games, bike rentals, and even a nautical museum. Want to check out nearby Balboa Island? The kids will love taking the auto ferry from the fun zone across the water. Pedestrians, bikes, and cars are all welcome. And be sure to grab one of the island’s famous frozen bananas dipped in chocolate.
Another option for exploring the Balboa Marina is to rent a Duffy boat from Balboa Boat Rentals. These electric boats go a maximum of 5 mph and seat up to 12 people. You can drive them yourself or hire a driver. Many restaurants in the marina offer “dock and dine” service where you dock your Duffy boat and grab some eats to enjoy aboard or at the restaurant.
Hours: Open daily, Ferris Wheel open 11 a.m. – 9 p.m., and boardwalk rides are open 11 a.m. – 8 p.m.
Any fan of mini golf will want to take a swing at this sprawling golf course that features three separate 18-hole golf courses—plus a small water park, a go-kart track, bumper boats, laser tag, and an arcade. The huge course has no big surprises and there are no fancy moving windmills or electric clown faces. This is straight-up traditional mini golf here, with tried-and-true challenges including raised holes, bridges over water, and mystery tunnels where your ball goes in one place and shuttles to another spot far below.
Hours:Open daily Cost:$14 per game (ages 12 – 59), $12 per game (ages 4-11). Prices for other attractions vary
Want something a few steps (and dollars) down from a big theme park, but that gives enough thrills that pint-sized riders will be squealing with delight? Look no further than Adventure City. Spread out over two acres, this little amusement park has 11 rides and almost all of them are perfect for kids as young as 2. From a tiny Ferris wheel and “Crazy Bus” to a carousel and train ride, kids will feel like bona fide daredevils as they conquer each attraction. There are two small roller coasters that older siblings will appreciate (with a height requirement of 39″ and 36″), but all in all, we’d say the sweet spot for this place is ages 3 to 8. Tweens and teens will likely long for the bigger, faster rides of larger theme parks.
Kids of all ages will also love the petting zoo where they can feed sheep, chickens, goats, and pigs. And when you need a respite from the heat, head to the arcade to cool off and game for a spell.
Hours:Open daily in the summers; weekends throughout the year (hours vary) Cost:$28.95 per ticket
The LA Zoo is amazing, but from time to time, families might crave something a bit smaller. The Santa Ana Zoo is perfect for kids who want a taste of wildlife without the all-day commitment. With just 20 acres of easy paths meandering around a smattering of fun animal exhibits, plus a petting zoo, playground, and even a few amusement park rides—it’s a zoo that’s super easy to handle.
This zoo focuses on the animals of Central and South America, and its residents include anteaters, monkeys, llamas, and a variety of birds. There’s also a farm area where kids can interact with friendly critters and a butterfly exhibit that lets visitors walk through a habitat filled with butterflies from South Central and North America.
Did we mention rides? The 50 Monkey Ferris Wheel and Conservation Carousel are always a hit – as is the Zoofari Express Train Ride which provides narration about all the animals who call this zoo home.
Insider Tip: Pack a lunch and picnic (or buy from the cafe) next to the Safari Playground then let your kids work out their wiggles so they’ll snooze all the way home Hours:Open daily, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. (last admission is 4 p.m.) Cost:$10 for children and $13 for adults
In addition to all the wonderful, hands-on exhibits your family has grown to love at Discovery Cube, this one may be the coolest yet. Having just opened in June, the Discovery Sea Lab is the Cube’s newest permanent exhibit. Kiddos will love the coastal tide pool touch tank, as well as a shark and ray tank this gives guests the thrilling experience of getting up close and personal with incredible creatures from the deep. Littles will have a chance to run their hands across a live shark to learn why their skin helps them slide through the ocean. They’ll also discover the amazing wonders of a tide pool community and learn how their diversity supports the entire planet.
Now through Sept. 4, your family can take part in an interactive aquatic wonderland called Ocean Encounter where you’ll get to explore all the zones of the ocean and find out what makes them unique. All exhibit offerings are included with general admission.
Hours: Daily, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Cost: Kids ages 3-14 are $17 and adults are $22
Great Park’s iconic attraction, the Great Park Balloon is one of the largest tethered helium (not hot air) balloons and the first of its kind in the country. This bright orange balloon stands 118 ft. tall with a volume of 210,000 cubic ft. and can fly from 6 to 16 passengers at a time at an altitude of 400 ft., weather permitting. The best part next to the mind-blowing view? This balloon ride is completely free! Rides are given on a first-come, first-served basis with check-in available 30 min. prior to each session of flights. Reservations are not accepted and wait times vary upon demand, but can be up to three hours—so come prepared with an extra helping of patience and try to get there early to shorten the wait time.
After you’ve soared to new heights, be sure to stop by the Great Park Carousel as well. With recently updated vintage-inspired artwork, your kiddos will love taking a spin on one of the most beloved attractions in town.
Hours: Closed, Mon. – Wed.; Thurs.-Fri. sessions, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. – 10 p.m.; Sat. and Sun. sessions 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. – 10 p.m. Cost: Parking and balloon admission are free
Ropes course? Check! Zipline? Check! Totally free? Yep! This awesome playground located in Huntington Beach’s Central Park West between the Huntington Beach Disc Golf Course and Kathy May’s Lakeview Cafe opened last year and is worth the drive on the 405. With enough wow factor to impress kids who might balk at the idea of spending an hour in the car, this totally innovative playground has a towering ropes course that lets kiddos scamper high above the ground; then take flight on a zip line that soars across the play area – but, don’t fret – this part is low to the ground so littles can’t fall far.
The course here is designed like a “Floor is Lava” game where climbers have to get from one end of the playground to the other without touching the ground. Kids will dig it – though it’s best suited for ages 5 and up. For little ones, there’s a toddler playground next to the lake with a seesaw, baby swings, bench swings, and a small climbing structure with a slide.
Good to Know: Set your navigation to Kathy May’s Lakeview Cafe (6622 Lakeview Dr., Huntington Beach); its is the closest place to park near the playground Insider Tip: Make it a staycation and book a room at the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort and Spa where your kids will love the water slides, beachfront activities, nighttime s’mores, and mermaid swim lessons.
Whether you’re downtown or uptown, coastal, or inland, you don’t have to drive far to find a good hiking spot
Ahhhh…spending the day in nature…fresh air, green trees, a picturesque hike that will tire your kids so they conk out during the car ride home. SoCal is brimming with kid-friendly trails right in our very own neighborhoods so you don’t have to look far for some swell places to explore. These hikes are just a stone’s throw away from home, offer free parking, and feature paths that are easy to navigate. So no matter what part of the city you find yourself in, there’s a perfect place close by to hike the day away.
The Sunset Park Cliffs Trail stretched along the Point Loma Peninsula is one of the very best for small kiddos. This stunning coastal hiking trail is about one-mile out and back, making it easy peasy on tiny legs. Along your travels, you'll have access to the beach and tide pools which you can easily check out at low tide – so be sure to pack swimsuits for some serious exploring. As always, these are called "cliffs" for a reason, so pay extra attention that littles don't venture too close to the edge. We highly recommend catching the view at sunset if you don't mind a crowd—it tends to be the most popular time of day for a reason. It's also a swell place to spot grey whales on their way to migration, depending on the time of year.
Bathrooms: No Parking: Small lots and street parking with Ladera St. and Luscomb St. as good bets

Tecolote Canyon - Bay Park
This is a long canyon in Bay Park where you’ll find several good entrances to choose from. A great starting place for kids is the Tecolote Canyon Natural Park & Nature Center where you’ll find scheduled ranger talks, stories, crafts, and a host of exhibits on animal and plant life. Or you can kick things off at the recreation center where you’ll discover a fun playground with tons of shade. Pick a trail and start your day of majestic exploration. Just remember, they are out-and-back trails, so you’ll have to go back the way you came.
Good to Know: Remember that open spaces are home to rattlesnakes, poison oak, mountain lions, and other hazards. Stay aware of your surroundings, bring plenty of water and sunscreen, and wear good shoes. Bathrooms: Yes, at the Nature Center and Recreation Center Parking: Free parking lot

A perfect combo of urban and nature can be found with this short and simple hike in the middle of the city. Start things off at the historic wooden Quince Street Bridge and you’ll find a trail entrance on the other side that will take you down into the canyon and under the bridge. This is an out-and-back, flat ground trail so only go half as far as little legs can muster so they can make it back to the bridge. This hike is perfect any time of year, but in spring, this trail really puts on a show with lush greenery and oodles of wildflowers. Bonus: Next to the bridge, you’ll find a Little Free Library so bring some old books to donate. Once you and the fam have worked up an appetite, stop by James Coffee and Extraordinary Desserts only one block away.
Bathrooms: No Parking: Free and metered parking

Located behind Mingei Museum is one of the most accessible and quick urban hikes at Palm Canyon in Balboa Park. Winding paths reward hikers with a shady and lush canyon filled with palm trees. In fact, the OG Mexican fan palms date back to 1912 so you can throw in a little history during your visit as well. There are some dirt trails that split upwards, but they eventually loop back around to each other. The garden also features a beautiful wooden footbridge leading from the Alcazar Gardens parking lot to across the street from Spreckles Organ Pavilion. This is a short hike, making it easy on little legs and even easier on parents' ears since complaints will likely be kept to a minimum. Bathrooms are conveniently located at the top of the steps.

Shepherd Canyon - Tierrasanta
This true urban hike is in a canyon that meanders between suburban housing developments. You’ll likely spot regulars from the neighborhood who come here for their daily walks, but it’s so wide that it never feels jam-packed. Some trails are lined with river rocks, sticks, or fallen trees, giving the area a great sense of community pride for being well-taken care of. You may even spy the occasional fort made of sticks and branches that kids will love to play in. There's not much elevation gain to the trail overall, so it will be a super easy hike for beginners and little ones. With several entry points into this out-and-back trail system, families will have plenty of swell options.
Bathrooms: No Parking: Free, residential street parking

On the other side of Balboa Park off Park Blvd., you’ll find another primo hiking trail at Florida Canyon. This is a more moderate hike for longer legs that will take the stamina of a 6-year-old to trek out and back. The dirt trails split off every which way so just pick a direction and follow it until you want to go back. It’s easy to find your way because the brush is low enough to see where you’ve come from.
The best way to access the trail is to park in front of the Natural History Museum at Balboa Park and walk across the bridge toward the rose garden. Turn left and you’ll find yourself in the Desert Garden with paved trails, making it an easy nature walk for kiddos. To find the hiking trail, take the switchback paved trail down towards Zoo Pl. and cross the street.
Bathrooms: None nearby, but there are restrooms in Balboa Park Parking: Next to the Natural History Museum

This scenic urban hike will have you feeling like you’re not in San Diego anymore. With its dried up river bed, large river rocks, and brush lining the wide trails, you're transported to somewhere totally new. During your visit, be on the lookout for wild animals and some serious bird spotting. There are several different neighborhood entrances to this out-and-back hike, but a good starting point is the Gathering Place (noted below). When you've finished hiking, check out the secret Azalea Park Water Conservation Garden, as well as a groovy playground behind the Community Center building.

Seven Bridge Walk – Balboa Park
Definitely, the most "urban" of all the hikes we've listed, the Seven Bridge Walk is a 5.5. mile loop that packs in some of San Diego's best sights and scenery, and it's definitely one your kiddos will never forget. This flat and easy path invites families to explore all seven bridges in Balboa Park and the surrounding neighborhoods of Hillcrest, North Park, and Banker's Hill. The highlight is the suspension bridge at Spruce St. built in 1912 - you'll definitely want a photo here. We recommend starting at the Park Blvd. Bridge on the east side of Park Blvd. at Village Pl. near the Inez Grant Parker Memorial Rose Garden. While you conquer each bridge in your quest, there are plenty of charming eateries and coffee shops to refuel along the way.
Bathrooms: Public restrooms are located throughout Balboa Park Parking: Numerous lots throughout Balboa Park, as well as a large (and free) public lot nearby at the San Diego Zoo

Located in Solana Beach, this fun 1-hour hike in the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve will treat kids to an epic exploration of the slot canyon, mushroom cave, and stunning sandstone formations. Annie's Canyon Trail begins in a residential area and is super popular, so you may want to visit during the week to avoid the crowds or at the very least go early on the weekends. At the end of the slot canyon is a 15 ft. high steel ladder that allows visitors to exit. If you visit on the weekend, please note it can get crowded making it near impossible to venture back the very narrow way you came in, so make sure all members of your family are able to climb the ladder out or can be carried up.
Good to Know: Given the narrowness of the trail and the ladder at the end, make sure to wear sturdy sneakers or hiking shoes Bathrooms: No Parking: Street parking in the neighborhood
Annie's Canyon Trail 150 Solana Point Cir. Solana Beach Online:alltrails.com
Hiking Safety & Tips:
1. Always bring more water than you think you need.
2. Wear sturdy shoes and hats and pack plenty of sunscreen.
3. Watch out for snakes and poison ivy along the trails.
4. With the exception of the Seven Bridge Walk, none of these urban hikes are stroller-friendly, but all are perfect for little legs to explore on their own.
Good to know: With so many fabulous urban hiking trails around the city, it’s hard to pick just one. So here’s an easy way to find a trail near you. Open up your phone’s map, zoom in to the green areas and look for the dashed green lines—those indicate trails. You can also type “hikes” or “trails” into your phone’s map and you’ll be surprised to see what pops up around you!
Inflation is a budget-killer but some of our favorite Bay Area activities for kids are totally free!
Welcome to San Francisco, one of the most beautiful(and most expensive) cities in the world! San Francisco is home to an array of interesting and unique activities, many of which are free (or cost very little). From exploring the Golden Gate Bridge to visiting the world–renowned Fisherman‘s Wharf, there‘s something for everyone to enjoy. Whether you‘re looking for a free outdoor adventure or a fun night out, this guide will provide you with the best free activities in San Francisco (and the East Bay and South Bay as well!). So grab your friends and family, and get ready to explore this incredible area without busting your budget.
1. Walk or Bike across the Golden Gate Bridge: A quintessential activity for Bay Area residents is walking across the Golden Gate Bridge. You can do that from the Marin side at the water level by parking at Fort Baker (near the Bay Area Discovery Museum) and walking the steep climb a mile uphill to get to the bridge. Another alternative is to park at the North Tower Golden Gate Parking lot (or nearby along Conzelman Road if the lot is full). Don’t miss a walk to the Ridge Battery for some of the best views.
3. Play in the Presidio: This former military base turned National Recreation Area has a prime location at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge and tons of free options you can explore. The visitor center is a great starting point as it will give you all of the area’s history. Then check out Mountain Lake Park or the abandoned batteries at the north end of Baker Beach. If you time your visit right, you can enjoy some eats at the Presidio Picnic (Sun. from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.) that includes food trucks and fun activities like free bike-riding lessons (first Sunday of the month) and cultural dance performances (fourth Sun. of the month).
4. Visit the Sutro Baths: This super-cool spot over at Land’s End offers visitors a glimpse into a past era of San Francisco history. Here you can explore the ruins of the massive indoor baths that burned to the ground in 1966 and then hike the beautiful coastline above. When you are down by the ruins, there’s even a cave to explore! Some of the paths to get down to the ruins are pretty steep but you can view them from above if you wish. The NPS has a great visitor center in the parking lot above the ruins that has photos that show the history of the area. Bonus for hungry hikers: there’s also a cafe and bathrooms inside!
5. Hike to Kirby Cove: For a totally gorgeous walk with the smell of eucalyptus in the air, hike down to Kirby Cove Beach. You can park at the trailhead near Ridge Battery where you’ll find awesome views of the Golden Gate as well as public restrooms. The hike down to Kirby Cove and back is about two miles and most of it is paved. You’ll reach the Kirby Cove Campground at the bottom where you can check out Battery Kirby before you proceed to the beach. Here you’ll find some of the best views of the Golden Gate in town and if you’re lucky you might even spot some whales offshore.
6. Explore Tilden Farm: It’s almost a Bay Area rite of passage for a child’s first introduction to farm animals to take place at the Tilden free farm. Bring lettuce and celery for the ducks, cows, sheep, chickens, and more, and check back every spring to see if there are any new baby animals crawling around. Afterward, the kids can take a ride on the merry-go-round ($3/ride) or the stream train ($3/ride, under 2 are free) and swim in Lake Anza.
7. Splash Down at These Splash Pads: If your crib doesn’t have a pool and your crew wants to cool off, there’s no better way to do it than at a splash pad. You can frolic in the fountains at Stanford (yep, it’s true!) or check out one of these local gems where the water is on!
8. Explore McLaren Bike Park: This gem of a bike park opened in SF’s Excelsior neighborhood and there are plans underway to expand beyond its current footprint. Bring the kids and the helmets to try out the pump track and the skills course. Perfect for mini BMXers looking to increase their skills, the park is open daily from 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m.
9. Go on a Sea Safari: Check the tide schedule and pick a time when the tide is super low before heading out to one of your local tide pools. Kids will love searching for the colorful sea stars, quick-as-lightning minnows, and clunky sea snails. The James Fitzgerald Marine Reserve in Half Moon Bay is an ideal spot for tide pool novices as they often have docents on the weekends to point out all the critters to the kids.
10. Explore a New Playground: It seems like there are new playgrounds popping up all the time around here. Now is the perfect time to pack up some snacks and set out to explore a new spot in your ‘hood or a new area altogether. Check out this list of 30 of our favorite parks in SF including the brand-new duo of climbing and swinging structures at the Civic Center. Up for exploring an East Bay park? Spend some time at Oakland’s Frog Park or cool off at San Ramon’s Central Park. The Peninsula is home to our very favorite all-abilities playground, Magical Bridge. Or head south to check out the pirate-themed Seven Seas Playground (perfect on a hot day) or one of these other South Bay faves.
11. Tour the City with SF City Guides: Whether you’ve been itching to explore Chinatown or the Palace of Fine Arts, SF City Guides has a tour for you. All of the walking tours are free and you don’t have to reserve a spot in advance, just show up with your kid crew at the meet-up time and you’re off! Tours like the Ferry Building and Market Street are especially stroller friendly, those like Nob Hill and Chinatown have hills that could be more challenging. The majority of the tours offered are kid-friendly, if they are not it will be stated in the tour details.
12. Tour the Nike Missile Site: During the tense years of the Cold War, from 1953 to 1979, the United States Army built and operated close to 300 Nike missile sites in the United States. These sites were designed as the last line of defense against Soviet bombers. Today, volunteers work in partnership with the Golden Gate National Recreation Area on the continuous task of restoration at site SF-88L, the only fully restored Nike missile site in the country. This museum is an enduring reminder of the Cold War and allows visitors to reflect upon the realities of the Cold War and their influence on today’s society.
13. Visit Adventure Playground: For kids who are into painting, building, hammering, painting, climbing, jumping, ziplining, getting dirty and running wild, Adventure Playground is one of the few places left in the world just for them. Disclaimer: it’s not recommended for the youngest ones, and nervous and overprotective parents will have a hard time letting their kids work with real saws and nails. But it can be really empowering for kids who are ready.
14. Hikes Galore: With gorgeous weather pretty much year-round, it’s always a good time to head out and explore a new trail. In the spring you can check out all of the local waterfall hikes. Even the youngest walkers will enjoy these hikes that are perfect for them. Or, strap the kids in the stroller and set out on one of these paths that are perfect for stroller hikes.
1. Free Admission to Museums & More with Discover and Go: Did you know that you can get free passes to museums, aquariums, zoos, and more, right from your local library? With your library card, you can log in to your library’s Discover and Go website, pick a date and find out what free passes are available to check out that date. Some attractions offer free admission and others are heavily discounted.
You can have up to two active reservations at a time and reservations can be made up to three months in advance. New passes are released on the first of the month (ex. on January 1st, passes for March are released). You can cancel a reservation as long as the pass has not been printed. Some attractions limit you to one pass per calendar year so check out the details when you log in.
2. Visit the de Young and Legion of Honor Museums: While youth 17 and under have always gotten in free to the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (which include Golden Gate Park’s de Young as well as the Legion of Honor), these museums have upped their game and added additional free day initiatives. Bay Area residents now get in free every Saturday! The museums also joined the Museums for All program to offer free admission to individuals receiving food assistance (SNAP benefits). They will continue to offer their free first Tues. admission program.
3. Visit the Palace of Fine Arts: Just a short walk from Crissy Field and the Presidio, you’ll love spending the day at the Palace of Fine Arts. There are a few great climbing trees, shade, and lots of wildlife watching. Can you spot the red-eared sliders sunning themselves on the logs? If you are looking for a picnic, we love grabbing a pizza from A 16 and bringing it over here to eat.
4. Hang Out in Golden Gate Park: Whether your idea of fun is joining in a drum circle, enjoying a cascading waterfall, or spending some time walking through a Japanese tea garden, Golden Gate park is the place to be. It has over 1,000 acres to explore. Check out our handy list of all the free and fun things to do in Golden Gate Park.
5. Explore the Batteries: The Marin Headlands house an amazingly-rich history, which you can see if you visit any of the area’s many batteries. While at Cavallo Point, take the cellphone tour of Fort Baker and then head over to check out Battery Yates and Battery Cavallo. All these spots have informational placards that will give you details about how the area was used in the past.
6. Explore the Bay Model: Kids with an interest in science and the environment will love the Bay Model Visitor Center. Constructed by the US Army Corps of Engineers to illustrate and understand the water flow of the Bay, this large-scale working model, complete with replicated tides, is a perfect way to expand your kid’s knowledge of water, waves, and beaches. Starting at the northern end and then working the way down to the south bay, then over to the delta, your child can watch the daily tidal changes take place in just a few minutes. Bonus: the boats docked just outside make for even more fun.
Explore the Ferry Building: This spot along the Embarcadero is a fun spot to visit if you are hungry but also to explore with the kids. They will love checking out the ferries coming and going, playing at Sue Bierman Park across the street and trying to make their way through the Vaillancourt Fountain without getting wet. The San Francisco Railway Museum is always free and the SF fireboat dock just a short distance away.
Sign Up for Your Free Pre-K Pass to Great America: Kids ages 3-5 can get free admission to California's Great America including The Great Pumpkin Fest and WinterFest.
