Now this is a story all about how…it’s been 30 years since The Fresh Prince pulled up at his family’s Beverly Hills mansion! To commemorate the occasion, Will Smith recently announced that he will be opening up the doors to the house where it all happened.

Starting Sept. 29 at 11:00 a.m. PST, groups of up to two Los Angeles County residents will have the opportunity to book a one night stay in Will’s wing of the mansion. To honor the 30 years that have passed since the show started, the five bookings will only cost $30 a night and will occur on Oct. 2, 5, 8, 11 and 14, 2020.

With some major updates since the 90’s, the wing showcases big style with access to Will’s bedroom and bathroom, a poolside lounge area and dining room. Guests are in for a big treat with perks that include trying on some of the Prince’s Air Jordans, spinning throwbacks on turntables, dressing up in clothes from Will’s closet and lounging poolside.

Guests can also make a request to be a part of a special Airbnb Online Experience with DJ Jazzy Jeff, where he will teach guests how to spin and scratch and virtually spend time with him in his home studio.

Anyone interested must prove Los Angeles County residency and currently live in the same household to minimize risk during the Covid-19 pandemic. To request a booking, head to Airbnb starting Sept. 29.

Looking for new ways to entertain the kids outdoors? We’ve got a nature-meets-suburbs scavenger hunt just for Angelenos. Get ready for a social distancing-friendly walk around the block—and see how many of these critters, plants and objects you can spot along the way.

1. Make a Wish

Whether you consider them a weed or a wildflower, these plants are regulars on lawns around town. Kinds can search for the white fluffy blooms and wish away!

Fun fact: It takes one to two weeks for the yellow petals of a dandelion to evolve into the delicate wisps (actually seeds) that carry wishes.

2. Butterfly Effect

Ian Lindsay via Pixabay

While the peak of butterfly season typically ends in March, you may still be able to spot some of these winged beauties this month.

Fun fact: Painted lady butterflies (with their graphic orange and black wings) migrate from the deserts of Mexico to the Pacific Northwest in spring.

3. Buzzing Around

Busy little honey bees can be seen circling flowers this time of year—just make sure kiddos keep a safe distance.

Fun fact: Lavender is a favorite of honeybees. (Of course, If you're bee-averse, you'll want to steer clear of the purple blooms.)

4. Getting Antsy

Little ones are experts at finding ants. And it's the perfect chance to make use of that magnifying glass.

Fun fact: Ants are one of the strongest creatures, able to lift 10 to 50 times their weight! That would be like a toddler lifting a horse.

5. Critter Connection

Mike Desisto via flickr

Keep an eye out for squirrels scurrying up trees, balance on power lines and darting across lawns—or even sunbathing in the park

6. Think Pink

Bougainvillea's bold, fuchsia blooms are a commons sight in LA—and they make for a great photo op.

Fun fact: The largest bougainvillea was planted in 1902 and is still growing today in the city of Glendora in LA county.

7. Hoop Dreams

Live in the sprawling 'burbs? Count how many basketball hoops you see on your excursion.

8. Rock On

Chances are you'll spot one of these drought-tolerant "lawns" before you round the block. The low-water landscaping is quintessential LA.

9. Humming Along

Tom Benson via flickr

According to the L.A. Nature Map (which lets you share your own pictures and sightings), hummingbirds abound around LA right now.

Fun fact: In addition to being able to hover mid-air and fly straight up and down, the amazing hummingbird can also fly backwards, .

10. Hi, Hydrant!

And you thought fire hydrants were red? Nope. Turns out LA's public hydrants are yellow, and you can find them every block or so.

Fun fact: Red hydrants are actually designated for private use and have much less water pressure than their yellow counterparts.

The Biggest Virtual Event Calendar for Kids

Editor’s Note: The White House and The White House Visitor Center are currently closed to public due to COVID-19. At this time, The Ellipse and Lafayette Park remain open.

The White House, The President’s House, the Executive Mansion, The People’s House — no matter what you call it, the iconic building at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. has plenty to see and do to engage both kids and adults. Whether you’ve got family in town longing to see the State Dining Room or you’ve always wanted the scoop on scoring Easter Roll tix, we’ve got insider tips on how to set foot on the White House grounds (without being tackled by Secret Service). Scroll on for how to nab tickets to tour the White House along with other events at The People’s House.

How to Tour the East Wing of the White House

Wikipedia

Tickets to tour the White House require some planning; they are granted on a first come, first served basis and require a minimum of 21 days notice. To request a tour, contact your member of Congress. Tours run Tues. and Thurs., 7:30-11:30 a.m. and Fri.-Sat. 7:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Tours are free and self-guided. Once inside the White House, you will have access to rooms in the East Wing, including the Blue Room, the Green Room, the Red Room and the State Dining Room.

When to Register for the Easter Egg Roll Lottery

Donna Spiewak via Wikipedia

President Hayes first invited children to roll their eggs on the White House lawn in 1878. Ever since, the Easter Egg Roll has been an annual tradition. Today, the event is organized and managed by the White House, the White House Historical Association and The National Park Service. Held on the Monday following Easter, the Roll features story time, live music, pictures with the Easter bunny and, naturally, an egg roll. To get tickets, you must enter a lottery. The lottery typically opens for a week in the month of Feb. or Mar. Lucky lottery winners leave the event with a keepsake, wooden egg.

Get Tickets to Smell the Roses Near the West Wing

Wikipedia

You can tour the White House year round, but if you want to smell the roses you can only visit the gardens twice a year. For one week in April and one week in Oct., the public can visit two formal gardens, the Rose Garden and the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden, as well as the White House Kitchen Garden. Free tickets are dispersed daily by Park Rangers during the bi-annual event starting at 8:30 a.m.  on the corner of Constitution Ave. and 15th St. NW.

Go Trick or Treating at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

Wikimedia Commons

In recent years, Presidents have invited local children and military families to the White House to celebrate Halloween. Families who are selected and pre-screened receive tickets from the Department of Education and the White House Military Office. You may not be able to go knock on the WH door, but there are plenty of other great places to get candy in the District (check them out here).

Talk a Walk in President's Park

Ad Meskens via Wikimedia

You can step foot on White House grounds without walking through a metal detector; Lafayette Square (to the north of the White House) and The Ellipse (the park south of the White House) were originally the front and backyard of the Executive Mansion and are now open to the public. Today, you can enjoy these parks 365 days a year. The Ellipse is probably most famous for the annual Christmas tree lighting, which is hosted by the current president.  Looking for a sneak peak into the main building but don't have tickets in hand? Head over to the White House Visitor Center to see White House artifacts. While you're there, pick up the National Park Service's Junior Ranger booklet on the President's Park.

Forget about mom-shaming. The mamas who visit NYC’s LaGuardia Airport’s Mamava lactation pod are each other’s biggest cheerleaders.

When The Wing CEO/first visibly pregnant woman on the cover of a magazine/new mommy, Audrey Gelman, recently visited the pod she snapped a pic of something totally unexpected. There were dozens of sticky notes on the pod’s interior, all offering words of wisdom and encouragement.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B5qWAGEh5WQ

The photo, which Gelman recently posted on Instagram, shows notes that read everything from, “What you are doing is Beyond Amazing” to, “Thank you to Mamava pods! And thank you mammas for all these messages. We are amazing!!”

Gelman captioned the photo with her thoughts on motherhood and this awesome action, “All of a sudden i felt flooded—the intensity of new motherhood, the stress of running a business i never thought would grow this fast —and the pressure i put on myself to do it all perfectly.” She continued, “The notes were sappy but they were the only things i needed to read in that moment. “You are enough,” “it gets better,” “feel proud of yourself for what you’ve created.” Those simple messages of encouragement and the recognition that so many have been through this before made me feel less alone.”

Breastfeeding Moms Can Finally Nurse in Comfort at Every Major U.S. Airport

These Are America’s Best Airports for Breastfeeding Moms, New Survey Finds

Photo: Shelley Massey

My daughter. She’s a wily one. Born smack in the middle of two boys with a mom who cares more that she gets in a good run than a good manicure, my tender bloom is equal parts girly-girl and gunslinger.

By birth order alone, she inherited a basement full of action hero costumes, dinosaurs, trains, and LEGOs. In this jungle of—like it or not—stereotypical boy-ness, for years my daughter never knew that there were princess palaces and pink cheerleading outfits to contemplate. And even after the floodgates of pink, purple, and sparkly opened, I still find her sifting through her brothers’ stash, often looking for just the right prop for whatever drama she’s acting out. She learned early on to take what she has and make it work.

Just. Like. A. Girl. Can I get an amen, anyone?

Consider her adventures with LEGOs for a moment. While my son is a stickler for following the instructions and playing along with whatever theme comes plastered on the box (grateful to have at least one rule follower), my daughter takes the mismatched sets and works miracles. The chassis of a Ninja Turtles sixteen wheeler? That’s a stage for her ballerina police officer. Darth Vader in miniature? Nope. He’s a ninja warrior who fights red legos that she’s planted all over the playroom floor (oh, joy!). Her structures, while elaborately created from imagination instead of the blueprints we lost ages ago, matter less in the grand order of LEGO playtime. It’s her plot—the story and the drama and the interactions between her characters—that matters more.

Now, before you start feeling too sorry for my little LEGO lover, I should tell you that we’ve supplied her with plenty “girl” sets of her own. But the same thing happens. We build the set to specifications, and by the next afternoon Elsa has become a cowgirl on Sven’s back, Anna is a sled-driving horse thief, and Olaf is Sherif. The trading post we spent an hour building is snapped to the top of her brother’s LEGO X-Wing, and the Death Star is in jeopardy from an ice cube slinging Kristoff. It’s the plot that matters more.

At night, when I worry about my kids—or more honestly, about my parenting skills—I comb through the remnants of the day, searching for signs that I’m doing something right. And when she’s been on a LEGO kick, it’s easy to find what I’m looking for. Because if there’s any skill that a woman needs in this world, it’s her ability to pick up the mismatched pieces in the LEGO drawer of life and build something beautiful, exciting, and exactly right for herself out of it.

Shelley Massey is a writer and editor for family travel, fitness, and lifest‌yle publications. She enjoys exploring with her four kids ages 10 & under, running, good food, entertaining, and great stories. And though she and her family live happily in Atlanta, their hearts are in Tennessee.

Just in time for the International Day of the Girl, Delta’s WING Program is helping to inspire more girls to enter fields typically dominated by men.

After being scrapped initially, NASA’s first all-female spacewalk is finally happening and what better way to celebrate girl power than with an all-female flight to NASA? The entire flight was planned and orchestrated entirely by women, including the pilots flying the plane, ramp agents working on the ground, gate agents boarding the flight and women in the tower guiding the aircraft on its way out.

This was Delta’s WING Flight fifth flight since it was founded in 2015. The goal of the program, which flies young girls ages 12-18 from Salt Lake City to NASA in Houston, is to help close the gender gap in aviation. Since the program’s inception, over 600 girls have taken flight with Delta WING.

“We know representation matters. At Delta, we believe you have to see it to be it,” said Beth Poole, General Manager – Pilot Development, who helped start Delta’s WING Flight in 2015 and has helped plan the flights ever since. “We’re taking ownership to improve gender diversity by exposing girls at a young age and providing a pipeline so that 10 years from now, they will be the pilots in the Delta cockpit inspiring generations of women who follow.”

After landing in Houston the girls were invited to tour NASA’s Mission Control Center, Building 9, Johnson Space Center and Space Center Houston. They also had lunch with Jeanette Epps, NASA astronaut and aerospace engineer.

“It didn’t seem realistic to go after a career in aviation, but today I realized, ‘Hey, I can do this too,'” said Katelyn J., age 17, a 12th grader from Advanced Learning Center.

This was the first flight for many of the Salt Lake City students. Delta partnered with schools that have STEM or aviation programs to provide a real path for interested future female aviators. “I never would have thought I would have had this experience. I’m really grateful for my parents who have made this possible and inspired my love of aviation,” said Karyanna H.,16, an 11th grader at Jordan Technical Institute. “It’s such an exciting time to be in STEM. There’s so much left for us to discover.”
