Kid-Friendly Dogpatch Dining

Looking for a meal out with the toddler in tow but tired of your usual list of kid-friendly restaurants?  Why not visit a sunny slice of San Francisco and try the vibrant Dogpatch neighborhood?  The area around the intersection of 3^rd and 22^nd Streets has become a dining haven for families —offering a diverse mix of stylish restaurants where little ones are welcome.  There’s plentiful street parking, or you can ride Muni’s T-Third line and hop off at the 20^th Street station that is one block north of the action.

First stop on the Dogpatch culinary tour is weekend brunch at Serpentine on the corner of 3^rd and 22^nd Streets.  The attractive warehouse space accommodates stroller traffic and chic American comfort food is on the menu.  Don’t miss the buckwheat pancakes and country-fried steak and eggs. For lunch, head one block west on 22^nd Street to Piccino and seat yourself on the sunny outdoor patio as the dining room can be a tight squeeze. Kids will love the thin-crust pizzas made of local and organic ingredients (especially the margherita) and you’ll marvel at the summer special—fig, speck, and chili oil pizza.

Pop back out onto 3^rd street and walk south for dinner at Hard Knox Cafe.  The fare is typical soul food: fried chicken, barbequed ribs, collard greens, and black-eyed peas to name a few offerings.  The eclectic décor features colorful vintage signs and memorabilia that will entertain young eyes for hours, so dine at your leisure.  Finally, stop by Just for You Café back on 22^nd Street to take home a doggie bag of their famous beignets!
