Walmart recently announced an early end to its first car seat recycling event. If you haven’t gotten a chance to trade in your old car seat for a $30 Walmart gift card, it’s too late—at least when it comes to this year’s event.

After collecting nearly one million car seats in less than one week, Walmart (in partnership with TerraCycle) had to change the end date from Sep. 30 to Sep. 21.

According to a press statement, “The response to-date from our customers has been incredible, far exceeding both our and TerraCycle’s expectations. Due to the overwhelming response from our customers, we are quickly reaching capacity for this program.”

One million collected car seats certainly sounds like a sizable number—but that doesn’t compare to the quantity of plastic water bottles it equates to. The car seats are, “The equivalent of diverting over 200 million plastic bottles from landfills”, according to TerraCycle.

While this event was forced to end prematurely, a Walmart spokesperson noted, “Through the car seat recycling event, we’ll help families to keep their kids safe and help reduce plastic waste from landfills. We look forward to hosting future events supporting the needs of parents and families.”

Play is more than just fun for your kiddo. A new study from Hasbro and Boston Children’s Hospital’s Center on Media and Child Health recently revealed the many benefits of play and now you have another reason to act like a kid—with your kid that is!

The study, which is part of the #MorePlayToday initiative, looked at how different types of play affect childrens development. So what did this research uncover?

Starting in 2016, researchers collected data on 327 children between the ages of two-and-a-half and eight in the United States and Mexico. After two years of data collection and analysis, the researchers found that when children play with their parents (or other adults in the household) they have better memory abilities.

Along with better memory, the study also found that play can reduce anxiety, sadness and fearfulness. When it comes to school readiness, board and card games were connected to vocab development, and letter and number games were associated with increased school readiness, as well as other positive behaviors.

Summer has arrived and with it the perfect excuse to forgo cranking up the oven and beat the heat with a family dinner you didn’t have to cook. If you’re looking for a little inspiration on where to dine, Grubhub has revealed the top dining trends of the year so far.

Grubhub’s report titled State of the Plate uses data collected from more than half a million orders placed on an average day through its platform to determine the trendiest dining options. So what did the report find?

photo: Shahrzad Warkentin

One clear choice is maintaining a steady rise in popularity: vegan and vegetarian dining. According to the report, vegan-friendly ordering has risen by 25% so far in 2019, with orders for the Impossible Burger increasing by 82 percent.

The following cities were the top spots in the country for ordering vegan:

  1. Los Angeles, CA
  2. Brooklyn, NY
  3. Portland, OR
  4. Las Vegas, NV
  5. Rochester, NY
  6. Philadelphia, PA
  7. Detroit, MI
  8. San Diego, CA

The Impossible Burger also topped the lists of favorites by region in both the West and Midwest.

The most popular dishes to order vary by season, with heartier comfort foods like mushroom stroganoff and empanadas trending in the winter, and lighter options, like cauliflower bites and mixed berry acai bowls growing in the spring. Grubhub predicts that the summer trends will include barbecue pork buns, truffle parm fries and quinoa and arugula salad.

Why stop at playing video games while you’re awake when you can continue in your sleep? No, that’s not a sci-fi movie premise. The Pokémon Company has just revealed the newest groundbreaking way to play: Pokémon Sleep.

As the name suggests the new game will extend Pokémon GO from waking hours to sleeping. The announcement via Twitter explained, “What if you could continue training your Pokémon…even in your sleep? In 2016, Pokémon GO turned the simple act of walking into entertainment, making the entire world into a game. We’re about to do it again, Trainers—this time, for sleeping.”

The new Pokémon Sleep app uses a special device to track a user’s sleeping time and incorporate it into gameplay. The details on what that actually means are still sparse but the game, along with the new Pokémon GO Plus+, will launch in 2020.

The company also announced the release of Pokemon Home, which allows all of the Pokemon you’ve collected across the various games, including Let’s Go Pikachu, Pokémon Let’s Go Eevee, Pokémon Sword, Pokémon Shield, Pokémon GO and Pokémon Bank on the Nintendo 3DS to be stored in a cloud and accessed by whichever game you are currently playing. In other words, you could catch a Charmander in Pokémon GO and battle with him in another game.

Preparing for a new baby can be an overwhelming time. Deciding what you need and what to add to that baby registry isn’t always easy. A new survey reveals some insights into how expectant parents build their baby registries.

Using data collected on more than 300,000 gift givers Babylist, a universal baby registry service, has compiled a report on buying habits of expectant parents and baby gift givers.  The survey revealed that while 50 percent of items registered for are $20 or less, the average amount spent by gift givers is about $130. Grandparents are the most likely to splurge on gifts, versus other family and friends who are more budget conscious.

photo: Vidal Baleilo via Pexels

When selecting a gift, most prioritized practicality over sentimentality, with 44 percent wanting to gift something needed versus just 14 percent wanting to give a gift that is personal and thoughtful. One quarter of gift givers purchased something off registry to bundle with items on the list.

The data also revealed trends in registry items, with several selections on the rise in popularity. Between 2017 and 2018 baby bottles on registries increased by 11 percent, followed by baby monitors with a nine percent increase and strollers with an eight percent increase.

Most baby registries are created during the second trimester, though only 11 percent say they feel like they’ve researched products and feel prepared. On average Babylist users spend a whopping 40 hours building their registries. Fifty-two percent of what registrants add to their lists end up getting deleted.

Does paddling your way across Europe in a kayak for two sound like the world’s most amazing vaycay? If it does, the Denmark-based nonprofit GreenKayak wants to make your travel dreams come true—and for free!

GreenKayak started giving away free paddling trips in April of 2017 and the offer, which started in Denmark, has since spread to Ireland, Norway, Germany and Sweden. So how can you get a kayak-packed trip for free?

All you need to do is pick up some trash! As long as you agree to help clean up the waterways in the areas GreenKayak serves, the organization will give you a green kayak (obviously) built for two to use. You’ll also get lifejackets and equipment necessary for collecting waste.

GreenKayak’s first efforts resulted in the collection of three tons of trash from Copenhagen Harbor in one year. Since its inception in 2017, volunteers have collected a total of nearly 11 tons of garbage from the waterway.

Tobias Weber-Andersen, GreenKayak founder and CEO, told USA Today, “The feedback from volunteers is amazing; people have been wanting to join in the fight against ocean pollution and be very hands-on.” Weber-Andersen added, “We had hoped to have 30 kayaks this year, but most likely we will have around 50 spread across all of our locations.”

12 Ways Kids Can Give Back without Leaving the House

The early days with a new baby can be exhausting and stressful for both moms and dads, but how they cope with the challenges of new parenthood is very different according to research.

A study from Penn State University found that moms and dads are affected differently when they welcome a new baby, and each has specific needs to better cope with the stress of infant care. It should surprise absolutely no one that what moms need most to support a healthy family dynamic is sleep. Dads, on the other hand, need exercise.

photo: smpratt90 via Pixabay

The study looked at data from 143 moms and 140 dads collected 10 months after the birth of their babies, tracking the answers to questions about sleep patterns, exercise routine and perceived well-being of the family as a whole. Moms that slept more on average than other moms reported greater well-being, but dads who slept more on average actually reported lower well-being.

On the days that dads exercised more than usual, fewer arguments occurred between the couple. The same was not true for moms and exercise, however, as arguments tended to increase on the days that moms reported engaging in more physical activity.

The research team suggests that new parents track their own sleep and exercise habits the same way you might track your newborn’s patterns—with an app. Parents can then use the info to assess how it lines up with their mood and well-being and adjust their behaviors.

“Most parents already have a good place to start from at least on some days, so it’s a matter of figuring out what works on those days and then doing more of that,” said lead author Mark Feinberg. “This would be an easier and maybe more effective approach than thinking that we have to help someone completely change their routines and emotional patterns.”
