If you’ve ever asked your kids “How was your day?” and received what sounds like a grunt or the ever-popular “OK,” you’re not alone. Instead of letting family chats fall to the wayside, consider using conversation starters for kids during your next family dinner. Sure, gathering everyone for a meal might seem impossible, but it’s more important than ever; studies have shown that families that eat together often have healthier diets, increased communication, and overall emotional stability.

And, engaging your kids in conversation has other huge benefits. It helps them learn important social skills, boosts vocabulary, raises self-esteem (especially when you listen to their responses), and could lead to them opening up about things that might be bothering them. So, if you’ve come this far, congrats! The next step? Figuring out what to talk about at the table. That’s where our fun conversation starters for kids come in handy.

How to Use Conversation Starters

Time your questions.

If your kid is hungry, tired, or both, it might not be the best time to engage in elaborate table talk. Use conversation starters with kids when you aren’t rushing to get to practice, there isn’t homework to be finished, and everyone is in a good mood.

Listen to their answers.

So, their curiosity is piqued, and they’re thinking hard about what to say. You need to be present in the moment and listen. Kids’ self-esteem gets a boost when they know their parents are listening.

Don’t forget to ask open-ended questions.

Consider using conversation starters for kids that require more than yes or no answers. If kids (or anyone) have a chance to elaborate on their answers, that can open the door to more interesting conversations.

300 days a year of sunny skies make Colorado Springs a popular destination for families, especially in the winter. This area of Colorado is an alpine desert, so you won’t typically see the tons of snow experienced in the nearby ski towns like Vail and Breckenridge. This temperate weather provides opportunities for other family adventures, especially if you choose The Broadmoor Resort as your home base.

I recently visited with my 14-year-old son and was really impressed by the gorgeous facilities, numerous on-site and nearby activities for families, and excellent restaurants. I’m never quite sure what will impress a teenager these days but I can definitely say that the Broadmoor’s falconry class and ziplining experience were highlights, along with our trip up to Pikes Peak. Here’s what you can expect when you visit The Broadmoor with kids:

Activities for Families at The Broadmoor Resort

The Broadmoor Resort Colorado Springs zipline
Kate Loweth

Ziplining at The Broadmoor

I think the best way to see the stunning scenery surrounding The Broadmoor is by zooming through the air via a zipline. Broadmoor Outfitters offers two zipline courses that are just a short drive from the resort. Your guides will transport you to the course at South Cheyenne Canyon where you’ll traverse rope bridges and ziplines as long as 1,800 feet with a controlled rappel to end the fun. Impress your kids with your bravery and see waterfalls and the massive canyon far below along the way.

Falconry Class

Kate Loweth

The 4,000-year-old tradition of falconry is available for you to experience when you visit The Broadmoor. Kids from elementary age through teenagers will love learning about the owls, falcons, and hawks that make their home at the Broadmoor. These captive-bred, trained birds are housed in the onsite mews and this is where your falconry class begins. A falconer will introduce you to these amazing creatures and explain the history and tradition of falconry.

Then your class heads outdoors where you’ll get to see one of these birds in action as they chase prey and soar through the air. The highlight for us was holding the falcon at the end of the class—it was surprising how light the bird was!

On-site Activities at The Broadmoor

The Broadmoor Resort Colorado Springs bowling alley
Play at The Broadmoor Resort

There’s so much to do at The Broadmoor that you never even need to leave the property! Families will want to book some time at Play where you can enjoy a game or two of old-school bowling while enjoying drinks and snacks. Saturday mornings bring everyone’s favorite Cosmic Bowling which is a real treat for kids because you can show up in your PJs!

Near the lobby, you’ll find a movie theater that shows family-friendly flicks on various nights. For some more active fun, book some time at the pickleball courts with a lesson for those who have never played before. Free fitness classes, ballroom dance lessons, and even a fly fishing fundamentals class are offered frequently throughout the winter season. Special events like elf storytime are available if you come during the holiday season.

Indoor Pool, Whirlpools & Spa at The Broadmoor

The Broadmoor Resort Colorado Springs indoor pool
The Broadmoor Resort

While the outdoor infinity pool is closed for the winter season, you can always swim in the gorgeous indoor spa pool and nearby outdoor lap pool. If the day has been a little chilly, the perfect spot to end your night is in one of the two outdoor whirlpools that fit up to 14 people each.

The nearby spa offers a relaxing environment for parents to enjoy when the kids are otherwise busy. Reserved for onsite guests and golf club members, the spa offers saunas, salt walls, steam rooms, oxygen rooms, and fireplace lounges to enjoy after your massage or facial.

Childcare and Day Camps at The Broadmoor Resort

If you are traveling with younger children and want to have some kid-free time to enjoy the spa or a fancy dinner, book some time for your kids to be cared for by the Broadmoor Nannies. They will visit the on-site playground and enjoy other activities around the property until it’s time for you to meet up again.

If you decide to visit the property in the summer months, Bee Bunch on-site day camps are offered for kids ages 3-11. Kids will do arts and crafts, take nature walks, and do STEAM activities. This program is also available on select days during the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons.

Accommodations & Restaurants at The Broadmoor

The Broadmoor Resort Colorado Springs
The Broadmoor Resort

Whether you choose to stay in a traditional room, suite, or cottage, you’ll be impressed by the opulence of the rooms at The Broadmoor and all of the space it offers for your family. Large bathrooms, plenty of space for luggage, seating areas, and comfortable beds are all part of your Broadmoor experience. Many rooms have fireplaces which are pretty much our favorite after a long winter day spent outdoors.

Dining at The Broadmoor

There’s no need to leave the property for meals when you’re staying at The Broadmoor as you’ll find loads of kid-friendly dining experiences on-site. The Golden Bee is the lively English pub of your dreams with massive soft pretzels, fish and chips, and burgers on the menu. Head to Ristorante del Lago to dine by the lake and enjoy traditional brunch fare and Italian specialties like pizza, pasta, and slow-roasted chicken. For a real celebration, book a table at Summit where you’ll find upscale contemporary cuisine like veal osso bucco, herb-crusted sablefish, and Wagyu beef skewers.  For a great grab-and-go option, head to Café Julie’s for croissants and pastries that will rival any Paris patisserie. You might even see them making the desserts in the attached kitchen while you are there!

Things to Do Near The Broadmoor

Pikes Peak Cog Railway
Pikes Peak Cog Railway

Pikes Peak Cog Railway

A highlight of our visit to The Broadmoor was a ride on the Pikes Peak Cog Railway. Open year-round, this train takes you from the town of Manitou Springs (elevation 6,320 feet) to the top of Pikes Peak which has an elevation of 14,115 feet. Along the way, you’ll hear about the history of the area and see some amazing views of Colorado Springs below.

The ride up the mountain takes just over an hour and then you’ll have about 40 minutes to enjoy the summit and visitors’ center before heading back down the mountain. Be sure to try their famous donuts at the top!

This trip is best for older kids as you have to stay in your assigned seat for the duration of the journey as it gets quite steep at some points. There are no restrooms onboard the train and no strollers are allowed. The elevation gain is no joke and you should be sure to hydrate and take it easy when you visit the peak. Choose seats by the windows for the best views!

Downtown Manitou Springs

After your visit to Pikes Peak, take some time to stroll through the quaint town of Manitou Springs. Kids will especially love the indoor/outdoor Manitou Springs Penny Arcade where you’ll find retro video games, pinball, racing games, and so much nostalgia.

Getting to The Broadmoor Resort

The best part about staying at The Broadmoor is that getting there couldn’t be easier. Fly into Colorado Springs airport and make arrangements to ride the property’s shuttle van to the property. You don’t have to rent a car and there’s plenty to do on the property to keep your family busy while you are there.

Um, excuse us. Where are the stocking stuffers for adults?

Listen, we’re parents. And we love seeing our little ones light up during the holidays, so we try to create as much magic as possible over the holidays. That includes planning the best possible gifts and filling their stockings with goodies. But we’re here to remind you that adults are totally due for some stocking fun, too. Stocking stuffers for adults are often last-minute or forgotten all together (who can blame you? You’re over there making holiday magic, remember?), but it’s high time we change that.

Our list of stocking stuffers for adults include clever, creative, and, most-importantly, fun things any grown-up will love finding (and you’ll love gifting). We have gourmet treats, vintage stickers our inner child will adore, some boozy options for those who choose to imbibe (hey, it’s the holidays), and ideas we hadn’t even thought of. Well, until we found them. But we did the hard work for you, so read on for our picks.

Ugly, but make it fashion. Ugly Christmas sweaters are here.

There’s nothing as iconic as the ugly Christmas sweater. Oh, sure, they started out being worn un-ironically (over turtlenecks and paired with a festive brooch, right? We know you’re picturing it now.), but they’ve become a seasonal staple that isn’t going anywhere. Have you been resisting this trend? It’s time to embrace it. Do you already have a collection of jolly jumpers? We’re ready to help you add to it. Either way, these sweaters are the icing on the Christmas cake (Yule log?). Parties, Christmas Day, casual Friday…you need one. Or two. Whatever.

Hilariously ugly to adorably snuggly, this is the ultimate sweater guide. Oh, and if you hate sweaters, or live somewhere that it just would be miserable to wear one, we thought of that, too. There’s tees, sweatshirts, button-downs, and even an apron in here. For adults, for kids, and for pets—we made sure to include anyone who needs some extra holiday style. And make sure to note shipping cut-off dates! It’s coming fast.

Kristen Wiig’s 2020 sketch will live on forever

Don’t forget about mom this holiday season. Saturday Night Live host Kristen Wiig highlighted what Christmas morning really looks like for some moms, in a sketch that went almost instantly viral when it aired in 2020 because it was so on point. In the sketch, Wiig gets woken up early by her kids, played by Kyle Mooney and Chloe Fineman.

Her kids and husband begin revealing all of their gifts, and mom, well… she doesn’t have much.

Mooney sings about receiving a Nerf gun, Hulk hands, a drum set, and a telescope. Fineman gets a hat, a phone, and a copy of Catcher in the Rye. Wiig’s husband, played by Beck Bennett, gets a signed baseball bat, a laptop, and a tie. And mom gets a… robe.

The song continues with the family listing off more and more presents, including the piano from Big. Wiig thanks her family (rather unconvincingly) for the robe, which she suddenly notices was also on sale.

While making breakfast, Wiig emerges from the kitchen with a dishrag over her hand letting her family know she burned herself. “It hurt pretty bad, but I didn’t even scream/because I keep the pain inside of me,” she raps.

When it looks like there might just be some extra presents for her after all, the kids and dad announce, “It’s presents for the dog!” The dog opens all of his gifts, which include a bone, treats, and, why yes, even his own robe.

Once they’ve finished tearing through the stacks, the family squeezes onto the couch for a holiday selfie, in which Wiig looks like a wreck because she’s been up all night making Christmas magical for her family

As the sketch ends, an exhausted Wiig is sitting alone on the couch holding a glass of red wine. “Your mom does everything for your family,” says a voice-over. “This year get her more than one present. Moms like stuff, too.”

A seasoned mom shares all the best ways to navigate the festive season with a wee one

They say it’s the most wonderful time of the year—and it is!—but even at the best of times the holidays can be a tad stressful, from travel logistics and finding the right gifts for everyone on your list to those less-than-subtle comments from relatives. Now throw a newborn into the mix and suddenly the season has an entirely new sense of magic, plus a fresh set of challenges as you navigate ever-changing sleep schedules, seasonal viruses, and an overwhelming number of commitments. As a mom of six, I’ve journeyed through my share of holidays with a new baby in tow (my third was born one week to the day before Christmas, and I really wish I’d had this list back then). Drawing from personal experience and expert advice, here are some tried-and-true tips for helping a new mom survive (or even thrive!) this holiday season.

1. In Good Health

No matter the season, keeping your babe healthy is always priority number one, but it’s especially important to be on guard with a newborn during the holidays. Baby’s immature immune system, large crowds gathering indoors, and the circulation of respiratory viruses make for the perfect storm. Dr. Priya Thomas, founder of Mindful Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine and mom of three, explains the risk. “An adult who just has a cold can pass along RSV, which can become severe in young babies.” Her advice is to steer clear of the crowds, practice proper hand-washing, and ask others to do the same before holding your infant. “Parents should feel empowered in this area, as it’s a matter of the health of the newborn,” says Thomas. But she is quick to remind us that that doesn’t mean new parents need to skip all the fun with friends and family. “This is the time to be creative. You don’t have to miss out on the holiday cheer, just avoid the large holiday parties and opt for a more intimate gathering in your home,” she suggests.

Related: 3 Ways to Protect Your Baby From Respiratory Viruses, According to a Nurse

2. Respond Right

As you spend more time with family and friends in the coming weeks, expect a flurry of questions and offers of unsolicited advice. (Take it from me, this time of year they’re as reliable as busy stores and even busier parking lots.) For example, if your little one’s sleep schedule coincides with a family event, you might hear remarks like, “We never cared about schedules in my day.” While these comments are often well-intended, they may not be helpful, especially when tender, postpartum emotions are swirling. To ease the pressure of responding in the moment, prepare a general response ahead of time, such as “We’re doing what we think is best for our baby.” Give your response with confidence and a smile, then gracefully transition the conversation to a more enjoyable topic. And, if tensions escalate still, take some advice from Theresa Gray, founder of Blooms of Grace Counseling. “If you’re noticing that you’re starting to feel anxious, angry or stressed, it’s okay to step away for a moment,” she shares. “Take deep breaths that fill your belly and relax your jaw and visualize a peaceful scene or memory.”

3. Baby Yourself

This time of year is all about giving, so go ahead and give yourself the gift of a break. “Self-care is often thought of as things like hot baths, mani-pedis, and shopping trips with friends, but those aren’t really the things that recharge us,” explains Gray. “Instead, self-care during this busy and highly sociable season might be to get up before the baby to prepare yourself and your heart for the day.” She continues: “It should include spending intentional time with your spouse or close friends and asking for help and communicating the needs and desires you have.”

4. Respect the Nap… Or Don’t

With all of the added festivities, the holidays are notorious for throwing off routines. As the parent, you get to decide whether to toss your schedule to the wind or politely decline any events that may mess it up. In my early years of motherhood, I took the respect-the-nap-at-all-costs approach. Although I missed out on certain events, I enjoyed the outings I did take because I had a happy, rested sidekick. Now, six kiddos in, we tend to let baby nap on the go, and she generally thrives in the spontaneity. In the end, how much to alter your baby’s schedule over the holidays is up to you and the kind of kid you have. “There is wisdom in keeping to a schedule, as there is a physiological need for that, but some flexibility is good, too,” says Thomas. “I am all about being mindful of what works for your family.”

5. Layer Up

The weather outside can be frightful this time of year, so it’s especially important to dress your little one so that they’re warm and comfortable. Because infants aren’t able to regulate their body temperature yet, they can lose heat four times faster than adults—though that’s not a reason to keep them indoors, no matter how many times your grandma warns about catching your death of cold. “Your baby is not going to get sick from exposure to the cold, but do be mindful of low temperatures and proper clothing,” advises Dr. Thomas. Layering is the key to ensuring your tot doesn’t get too cold or too hot. The rule of thumb: Dress them in the same amount of clothing you’d wear yourself, then add a layer. Also, be sure little’s outfit includes a hat, as the head and face are where babies lose heat the quickest.

6. Travel Smart

If you’re hitting the road this year, it can be helpful to plan your drive around baby’s nap time or bedtime to help you travel in peace. If they’ll be awake for the drive, schedule in lots of stops for feeding and cuddling. If your babe is prone to fussiness in the car, consider a genius travel companion like this: the Baby Shusher. It has consistently calmed our crankiest car-bound babies (and also soothed their hyperventilating parents) for years. Another option is the Hatch portable sound machine, or just turn up the tunes. “Santa Baby,” anyone?

7. Toy Time

Now that you’re a parent, it’s time we break it to you: for the next decade, the holidays will be virtually synonymous with toys. So many toys. If you have family eager to load baby up with gifts, my seasoned-mom advice is to skip anything with batteries (a.k.a. noisemakers) and keep it simple. For young babies, an activity mat is a great choice, suggests Thomas. “You can do tummy time on the mat with a newborn even just for a few minutes,” she says. “Look for one with a mirror and different contrasting colorings and textures, things they can touch and feel or make sound.” For older babies, my go-to’s are wooden blocks, hand puppets, and board books, each of which develops their motor skills or fosters imagination and emotional connection.

8. Slow Down

During the holidays, we often feel the pressure of doing more, but this is your permission to slow down. Replace the holiday “ho-ho-ho” with “no-no-no.” “Self-care sometimes means saying ‘no,’” Theresa explains. “You don’t have to do everything and be everywhere. Choose the things that prioritize the health of your family and the reason for the season.” (Read that again if people-pleasing is your kryptonite.) Letting the hustle and bustle of the holidays pass while you soak up the simple pleasures—quietly snuggling up on the couch with your favorite festive bevy and your tiny little elf—may be the best thing you add to your schedule this season.

9. Nobody’s Perfect

Sometimes, the most precious moments are the least perfect. It took me a long time to learn this. For years, I aspired to have the perfect Christmas tree (you know the one, straight from a Pottery Barn catalog), but with so many curious little hands moving things around, I’d have to rush to secretly redo the ornaments each night after bedtime. Now, looking back, I realize that I missed the magic in pursuit of perfection. Learn from my loss and let go of the idea that there is an “ideal” Christmas or Hannukah card, photo, or party. Instead, be present with your baby and enjoy the moment, no matter how imperfectly (or downright messily!) it unfolds.

Leave these dangerous items off the list this year

With Hanukkah in full swing and Christmas fast approaching, odds are you have some holiday shopping on your to-do list this week. Pediatric ER doctor and mom of four Dr. Meghan Martin recently posted a TikTok video sharing which toys are most likely to land kids in the ER this holiday season, and you might be surprised by a few. While you’re probably already aware of dangerous activities all kids should avoid (like swimming alone and riding on ATVs), there are certain no-go items that kids should really steer clear of. Here’s what Dr. Martin has to say:

5.  Anything with a button battery

Per the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, “When swallowed, these small batteries get stuck in the esophagus (throat). The saliva triggers an electric current which causes a chemical reaction that can severely burn the esophagus in as little as two hours, creating an esophageal perforation, vocal cord paralysis, or even erosion into the airway (trachea), or major blood vessels.” Beyond these dangerous outcomes, children have died from ingesting button batteries.

These tiny batteries can be found in so many items in your home, from remote controls to musical greeting cards to watches. “[In toys] they keep those compartments closed with these little cheap screws. It’s not worth it. They can kill kids, and they do it every year,” Dr. Martin says.

4.  Water beads

“These are sold as sensory toys, but little kids can ingest them when they’re small, and they can get larger and can cause bowel obstructions,” Dr. Martin says. “Don’t mess with these with little kids—and they can cause problems with pets, too.” The Consumer Product Safety Commission further explains: “Water beads look harmless—almost like candy—but can be deadly to babies and small children if ingested, and can lead to choking, internal injuries, and even death if left undetected.” The CPSC recommends that water beads be removed from all environments with kids ages 3 and under.

3.  Electric scooters

“Kids get going way too fast on these,” Dr. Martin says. “They hit a bump; go flying; and mess up their faces, their arms, their heads. It’s Bad News Bears.” Electric scooters can travel up to 15 mph, and if you fall off, you are going to get hurt whether you are wearing a helmet or not. Cuts, fractures, and head injuries are the most common issues resulting from e-scooter usage. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children under 16 not operate or ride on electric scooters.

2.  Hoverboards

“We see so many hoverboard injuries right after Christmas,” Dr. Martin says. “[Kids] break their forearms and their elbows and sometimes their heads. Also, they can literally light your house on fire.” This two-fold danger still hasn’t kept hoverboards off kids’ wish lists through the years, and most kids aren’t wearing helmets and wrist guards while operating them. There’s even a whole TikTok account dedicated to hoverboard “fails.

The CPSC has been warning parents of the dangers of hoverboards since 2015. “In March 2017, a 2-year-old girl and a 10-year-old girl died in a house fire ignited by a hoverboard in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. In addition, CPSC has reports of 13 burn injuries, three smoke inhalation injuries, and more than $4 million in property damage related to hoverboards.”

1.  Trampolines

“This should not be a surprise to anyone. I detest trampolines,” Dr. Martin says. “They keep the emergency department and the orthopedics team in business. It doesn’t matter if you have a net. It doesn’t matter if you have them buried in the ground. Most of the injuries actually happen on the trampoline. Also, your insurance company may drop you.”

Kids can get injured by landing wrong, being jumped on by another child, or falling off a trampoline without a net. As the Mayo Clinic explains, “trampoline injuries cover a wide spectrum, from small lacerations to fractures of the spine, head, ribs and sternum. And the number and variety of injuries continue to climb, despite efforts to make trampolines less dangerous with enclosure nets and other safety features.”

Consider these warnings as you play Santa this year so that you can avoid a holiday trip to the ER with your little one!
