Bright Horizons has just released the 2018 Modern Family Index and it shares some staggering information on employees views of moms in the workforce. The report uses data from working Americans and discusses the “motherhood penalty” in which working moms are often overlooked for career-advancing opportunities.

Not only are moms missing out on leadership roles that help them reach their full potential, but the report also found that businesses lack those very same characteristics that moms bring to the table. Just in time for Mother’s Day, the Modern Family Index is seeking to shed light on the simple thing moms need the most––recognition and opportunity.

What do women think of themselves as workplace leaders? According to Bright Horizon’s stats, a whopping 82 percent of working moms say there are barriers to leadership. Beyond that, 78 percent think they need to go above and beyond to prove themselves as leaders (in comparison to non-moms).

Even though the working mom’s view of their own route to leadership isn’t exactly positive, 89 percent of workers believe working mom leaders can bring out the best in their employees—with 65 percent feeling moms are better listeners, 51 percent saying moms are calmer in a crisis and 47 percent reporting that moms are more diplomatic. Now those are some stellar qualities that everyone needs to appreciate—especially on Mother’s Day!

So even though the macaroni necklaces, finger paintings, and “artful” clay coffee mugs are absolutely adorable, you wouldn’t say no to some serious appreciation for everything you do. And neither would we!

You’re about to have a close encounter of the wolf kind! In the pine-dotted hills of the high desert 90 minutes from LA, lies Shadowland Foundation, a facility dedicated to the preservation and re-population of the wolf species.  This is a one-of-a-kind educational experience for kids, families, and everyone who loves the wolves. You’ll be ready to join the pack of ten Alaskan timber wolves and have a whole new understanding of animal conservation after a visit to the foundation.

Skip Saturday Morning Cartoons
Tours are currently held at 10 a.m. on Sat. only. This is due to protecting the eerily beautiful nocturnal eyes of the wolf. Founders and “wolf parents” Paul and Collette Pondella are using donations to complete work on their barn—once that opens they can host meet-and-greets year round.

Sit Tight, Learning First
Your session begins with a seated presentation inside a warm, in construction yet still gorgeous, sprawling, red barn. Collette presents a thorough and interesting round-up of everything you never knew about how important wolves are to our ecosystem and how they have been systematically targeted for eradication. You’ll see a short documentary called Freedom of the Pack created by Thomas Durant (famous for “The Deadliest Catch”) who was inspired by a visit to Shadowland. The presentation takes about an hour and a half and questions are welcomed. While Collette speaks you can hear the wolf pack piping in like impatient children saying “Come on! Come meet us! We’re waaaiitttttinnnng!”

Meet the Pups
Once the presentation concludes, purses and bags are stashed, and there’s time for a bathroom break. If there’s a large group, it’s split up into two where one group goes with half the pack and vice versa. Everyone is instructed on safety and how to meet the wolves (fingers tucked in, offering the back of your hand to smell). Then you’ll be led into a staging area (a.k.a. Paul and Collette’s side porch of their ranch house) where you’ll sit down and let the pack meet them/sniff and get to know you.

Inside the wolf enclosure, the pack (Shadow, Wahkahn, Takoda, Freedom, Alaska, Tehya, Cochise, Chenoa, Keme, Kachina, Ogin) all know what to do. They hop up on a viewing platform and wait for the awe-filled attention. Like children, they all have different personalities. Some are shy, some are affectionate, and some—like Wahkahn, who even as a puppy towers over some of the full-grown adult wolves—is feisty and playful.

Swap Spit!
You’ll have plenty of time to get to know each wolf, with Collete and Paul constantly teaching as you do. Perhaps the most fun part of the meet and greet is the opportunity to feed them. You’ll hold little bits of kielbasa sausage and be shown exactly how to offer it up for a nibble. Wolf spit is shockingly thicker than a dog’s. Wipes are ready for you after the saliva-fest.

If you aren’t eating your packed lunch there on the pretty grounds, stop by the Heart and Soul Café for howlin’ good (couldn’t resist that joke!) burgers, macaroni & cheese and a homemade chocolate chip ice cream sandwich on your way back down the hill.

What to Know Before You Go (And we’re not “crying wolf!” Sorry, last pun.)

  • Wear closed-toe shoes and jeans or pants that you don’t mind getting hair and wolf slobber on.
  • Be prepared for 20 degrees chillier (and windier) weather than in LA.
  • Park to the left of the red barn and head inside to be checked in.
  • Empty your pockets before meeting the wolves; anything sticking out is fair game for a nibble!
  • Bring lunch to enjoy with your group afterward on Shadowland’s lovely grounds.
  • While there are no age restrictions and the wolves have met everyone from newborns to 100-year-olds, it’s recommended for 8 & up.
  • Tours of groups over 10 must donate ahead of time to secure their tour date. Recommended donations are $50 per adult and $35 per child. Tours book up well in advance, so call a month or so before you’d like to go.

When you’re the parent of a toddler, there is never a dull moment! You’ve never laughed so hard, or felt this exhausted and rewarded. Here are 10 signs that you have a true toddler on your hands and are more than ready for a glass of wine (or two) at the end of the day.

1. It’s 7 AM and you’ve reheated your coffee about 5 times. In the end, you resign yourself to a cold cup of coffee or burn your tongue trying to gulp it down because you resolve to drink that cup of coffee before the morning is over, if it’s the last thing you do!

2. Your walls, fridge, and floors are constantly covered with fingerprints thanks to a mystery sticky substance. These fingerprints, also reside on windows, furniture, and any other item that you love and/or want to keep nice. If it’s not a sticky substance, it’s sand from the playground falling out of every pair of shoes that you own and your bra.

3. Tantrums happen FAST! One second you are laughing and playing and the next second, your toddler is lying on the ground like a limp strand of spaghetti screaming. These tantrums also happen at the most “convenient times” like a busy parking garage or the dressing room at Nordstrom. When you see another mommy with a toddler throwing a tantrum, you guiltily smile and sigh with relief and think, “thank God that’s not me”.

4. You wake up at 5:30 AM to get to the gym at 6:00 AM for a crazy 1-hour workout session in the dark. You’ve never been a morning person, and so going to the gym at 6 AM is a pretty tremendous feat. After the gym, you rush home to shower, either shave your legs or wash your hair (you can’t do both), brush your teeth, apply makeup and get dressed all before your toddler wakes up at 7:30 AM.

5. You’ve resigned to reading “The Pout Pout Fish” at least 15 times a day (if not more). You can recite it, and even find yourself dreaming about taking adventures with the Pout Pout Fish and Ms. Shimmer. You order “Pout Pout Fish In the Dark” because for some odd reason you personally can’t wait to read anther book in the series.

6. Going out to dinner on a Saturday night when you don’t have a sitter involves going out at 5:30 PM to a loud restaurant filled with other parents and kids. You inhale your food, ask for the check right away and give the other parents knowing glances. Before you know it, macaroni and cheese is being flung across the restaurant and crayons are scattered on the ground. You scoop up your toddler and run out the door making sure to leave a generous tip before your toddler explodes.

7. Your taste is music changes because the radio stations played in your house and the car consists of Raffi and Elizabeth Mitchell. Throughout the day, you hear yourself humming Apples and Bananas, The Wheels on the Bus, and Baby Beluga. You even start looking for Raffi tickets because in your new state of mind, you think it could be fun to see him live with your toddler.

8. You never go to the bathroom alone. There is always a little person by your side handing you toilet paper, saying “mommy, mommy” or throwing things into the bathtub. Or your husband, who wants to talk to you and tell you about his day while you’re trying to get five minutes of sanity!

9. Naps are a marathon! In the two hours your toddler is sleeping, you run around getting the house back in order, cook gourmet meals, fold laundry (never-ending), get in a quick workout and complete house organization project. Naptime ends and you wonder, “What did I do with my time before this child?” On the days that your toddler decides to hold a “nap strike”, you are absolutely miserable and will need an extra coffee run to keep up with your toddler and an extra glass of wine after an early bedtime.

Schedule10. The immense happiness that you get from this little creature is immeasurable! When she smiles, wraps her little arms around your neck for a hug or learns something new your heart melts. You are glad that the days are never dull and you wouldn’t have it any other way.

How many times have you let your little ones into your jewelry box for dress up play just to end up with the entire contents jumbled together in one giant knot? We’ve all got better things to do than untangling our chains knot-by-knot, which is why we loved this ingenious hack. Check it out below.

As the ingenious video illustrates, all you need is a little lubricant to make untangling a breeze. Coconut oil, olive oil, or any other oil from the back of your pantry will do. By rubbing a small amount of oil on just the tangled part, you can easily manipulate the knot using two needles or the opened end of two safety pins. The trick is to lay it out in a flat surface as you work to loosen the tension of the knot.

Check out the video to see the steps in action. And if for some reason the magic fails you, there’s always that rainbow colored macaroni necklace that will pair perfectly with just about anything in your closet!

Pasta Skeleton
Which bone is connected to what bone? This clever pasta skeleton craft is a great way to expose your little surgeon a little biology. You’ll want a variety of pastas to represent the different type of bones in the body, but remember that it’s not necessarily for your biologist to remember the exact names for everything either. They’ll still step away from this project with a newfound respect and awe for the intricacies of the human body. For printables, materials and resources for this craft, visit Playful Learning here.

Imprinting with Pasta
Discover a world beyond macaroni and spaghetti and see what other unique noodle shapes there are. Press pasta into clay and explore patterns and shapes. We discovered this creative activity through Arteascuola, a creative blog by Italian artist and educational teacher Miriam Paternoster. The blog even teaches you how to fire the tiles up so that they last longer. Opt for quick-dry clay if you don’t want to use an oven, or if practicing patterns is your only goal, use playdough. Visit Arteascuola for more tile inspiration and instructions on how to make those tiles shine.
