The Simplest Way to Get Your Toddler to Play by Themselves

Back when your toddler was a “taby”—that’s the post-baby, pre-toddler phase around 1 when they start becoming little people—they were constantly moving, touching, and tasting everything in sight. And as parents, your job was simply to try to keep up and prevent them from killing themselves in the process. (Check!) But toddlerdom brings with it some different challenges. While your kid is making major strides in becoming more independent at this age, teaching them how to play independently feels nearly impossible (time to yourself while raising a 2-year-old? Pfft.).

Thankfully, we’ve got some great advice on the issue. Melissa Minney, a speech and language expert for kids, posted a video on Instagram with a genius tip for encouraging toddlers to play by themselves. It’s called an “invitation to play,” and in the caption, she explains what’s going on.

“An invitation to play is an early childhood education concept where an adult arranges toys or materials in a way that is meant to spark a child’s interest and imagination and that encourage exploration and activity,” she writes. “It doesn’t have to be elaborate; for example, in this video, I took these wooden peg dolls that my daughter loves already and arranged them in a new and interesting way on the shelf (lined up across the top) with a wooden wagon on the floor with one doll already in it. And that’s it!”

She continues, “My daughter came into the play area and I didn’t say anything, she noticed something was different and immediately went toward it to explore. I sat off to the side and drank my coffee 🙌”

Not only is this a clever way to help toddlers develop, but it also grants parents that elusive free time we mentioned above. Even if your little one plays on their own for just five minutes, that’s five minutes of not pretending to be Princess Buttercup of Unicorn Land (not that we don’t love being royalty).

Minney continues in the caption, “Invitations to play can also be a great way to introduce new toys and figure out what your child gravitates toward. A great tip for getting started with this is to think about a toy that your child currently likes or how they like to play right now and try to offer invitations that include/support that—if you’re not sure, you may have to try different things to see how they respond.”

Yep, we’ll be trying this out ASAP.

5 Toddler Activities That Calm Little Bodies & Support Sensory Processing

When you’re playing with your toddler, do you often find that they want to climb on you or push their body into yours? If so, that’s completely normal! Toddlers seek sensory experiences that help them explore the world and regulate themselves—and Courtney English, a pediatric occupational therapist, is offering five toddler activities you can do with your little ones to help encourage this kind of play in safe, fun ways in a new TikTok video.

Before we dive in, note that most of these exercises involve props. While you’re not required to get these by any means, if you’re looking for toys that serve a dual purpose (for example, both play and sensory stimulation), the ones used in this video could be great to add to your list.

Here are the five activities English recommends to help calm bouncy little bunnies:

1. Foot Squeezes

The first activity is foot squeezes, which she says she uses before naps or bedtime to help her toddler relax and prepare for rest. Simply squish your toddler’s little feet all over while you’re cuddling on the couch or lying in bed.

2. Tactile Balance Disc

The second is a tactile balance disc, which has a pebbly surface for toddlers to stand on while they balance on the floor. English says they use this in two ways: either to pick up from the floor and toss into a bucket or to stand on, which stimulates multiple different senses at once.

3. Balance Pods

The third toddler activity English recommends is balance pods, which she sets up as an obstacle course for her toddler to cross. While she has specific props for this, you could easily use household objects to create platforms for your toddler to balance on and recreate this activity.

4. Play Couches

Fourth on the list is play couches, a popular toddler toy consisting of plush modular cushions that can be used as a couch or separated to build forts and more. English recommends using them to create obstacle courses to stimulate the senses while building motor skills.

5. Tactile Discs

Finally, the fifth toddler activity is tactile discs, which are similar to the balance discs above but sit flat on the floor. These are great for toddlers to stand on while eating if they have a hard time sitting still, English says.

As you’ve probably gathered by now, all of these activities include movement and work to engage your toddler’s senses. So even if you don’t have the same toys English uses, you can definitely look for opportunities to recreate these activities using household items with different textures for your toddler to touch and feel as they play.

Disco Vinnie's House

A local favorite, Disco Vinnie has been designing elaborate light displays that really wow the neighborhood for years. Unlike other shows, this one runs for five hours and cycles through 80 songs, so you can swing by, stay for a bit and then come back another time for a totally new experience. It features four singing, old-fashioned light bulbs with talking faces (they make great back-up singers when harmonies are needed) and two arches that will really dazzle the kids.

Menashe Family Lights

West Seattleites have long loved visiting the Menashe Family Lights. With over 340,000 lights strung around the property, alongside blow-up characters, animated animals, a manger scene with vintage figures and a sweet little train that captivates the kidlets, this is one display that’s brimming with holiday cheer. In years past, the Menashes have invited Santa and Mrs. Claus to make an appearance and even unleashed gentle flurries on the gathered crowd. Who knows what special additions will be made this year. Tune into 103.1 FM and then sit back. This year promises to be another great one, with bigger and brighter lights. Plus, they've been known to host a New Year's Eve countdown too.

Olympic Manor

Mountlake Terrace

A different kind of winter light display, it features four themed zones where you’ll encounter lighted animals and plants lining the zoo’s walking paths. From the beautifully lit butterfly, bug and plant lanterns that start everything off to the mysterious animals just past the fairy tree, this display is totally lit. Don’t forget to make a stop at the interactive zone (in the center of the zoo), but know when you do, your kids won’t want to leave.

Google Musical Holiday Lights

The Cross Kirkland Corridor is where you'll find this musical display. Back again for another exciting year, families can gaze at this magnificent display that's programmed by Google engineers. It's a chance for them to dazzle you with their programming chops. 10,000 lights will dance to holiday music. Whether you and the kids do too is up to you. There are two places where families can park for free to enjoy the display. Try the Google surface parking lot (Google Building B, 787 6th St. S.) or the first level of Google Building D (451 7th Ave. S.).

Insider Tip: Plan to see this display turn on when you attend the party on December 2. Expect a petting zoo, a photo booth, hot chocolate and cookies for all. It all starts around 5 p.m., carolers take the stage at 5:15 p.m., and the display goes live around 5:30 p.m.

Redmond Lights 2023

Art meets light at this walkable public display. It's a month-long celebration of community and belonging that highlights local artists and their work. Or keep everyone warm and still have fun when your budding artists participate in the kid's coloring contest.

Maple Valley Lights

You'll find merriment and dancing lights at this stunning display in Maple Valley. Getting in on the festivities is easy. Simply pull up with your cuties and tune the car radio to 101.9 on your FM dial to enjoy the show that's filled with Christmas spirit. Then sit back and watch the mesmerizing 70,000 lights do their thing as they cycle through 15-20 songs (that's about 35-40 solid minutes of programming) before heading home to put the Littles to bed. In addition to finding Santa, complete with reindeer, on the roof, exciting new songs has been added to the playlist.

Good to Know: If you would like to drop off a food donation, you'll find a spot to leave non-perishables for the Maple Valley Food Bank.

Now in its eight year, this Eastside display is all about tradition. And this is the second year the display will be completely RGB (that's light show speak for pixelated red, green and blue LED lights). Now boasting a complete rainbow of colors, families can expect about seven or eight songs to be featured, and should plan to sit back and relax as the lights do their thing for about 20 minutes. Just tune your car radio to 103.1 FM to make the cascading jumping lights spring to life, like a reindeer on a rooftop.

Evergreen Lights

The folks at Evergreen Church in Bothell hope you and the kids will stop by to enjoy this popular light display that's a favorite with north end families. The Littles will be entertained by over 500,000 bright lights dancing to choreographed music while parents can snuggle up under the heat lamps nearby. Expect snow flurries every 30 minutes and an improved Pixel Light Tunnel that's sure to impress your friends on social. Head inside to watch trains and warm up with cookies and cocoa (available for purchase) before making your way back to the city.

Kornfed's Christmas Lights

Lights and inflatables that are the envy of Christmas enthusiasts cover pretty much every inch at this house in Bothell that really goes all out for the season. When you visit, stay a while to take it all in, checking out what's new and different—and hey, what's over there? Kids will have a blast seeing the whimsical elements of this brighter-than-bright display that gets bigger every year. But the real heart of this display is the donations they collect for families in need. If you're able, please bring a food or toys to support the MayWood Hills PTSA. Cash or monetary donations work too. Last year, they collected over $3,000 and 1,000 lbs. of food that went to local famililes.

Pennlights Holiday Show

This spectacular dancing light show, started back in 2007 by Dan Penn, and it pulls out all the stops, bringing holiday cheer to the neighborhood. Plan to spend around 20 minutes taking it all in, tuned to 92.1 FM from your car. Enjoy watching the 10-foot rooftop light grid that really wows. Expect lots of fast-paced holiday songs, mash-ups, and dub step that'll have your kids dancing in their car seats. To listen to the songs synched with the over 70,000 lights, tune into 89.1 FM. We love that this display is totally committed to being "green." In fact, almost everything you see has been saved from the landfill by display designer, Gena Laws and her family. If the spirit of the season moves you, bring some canned food to support the Black Diamond Senior Center and Food Bank. The Laws family is proud to have raised over 50,000 pounds of food in the past 13 years.

As much as we love the beach, staying at the oceanfront isn’t the only way to do Cancún. And we haven’t even dipped our toes into the lake, yet. Swimming lakes are decked out with their signature Aqua Parks: inflatable climbing structures and classic obstacle course games such as barrel roll, monkey bar rings, and more. Lifeguards are plentiful and lifejackets are required for all lake activities, making it easier for parents to relax and enjoy the sandy beach.

The fun doesn’t stop when it’s time to dry off. Mini golf, laser tag, and volleyball are epic options for an unforgettable family game night, while massive, air-filled jumping pillows will have the whole family hopping up and down together. Check the non-stop schedule of events to take a wagon ride, get messy at a foam party, munch popcorn at an outdoor movie night, or get crafty at dozens of group art activities. Morning workouts and an old-fashioned flag raise are attended by the hosts of honor—Yogi Bear and his friends.
