Make a slinky skeleton with the kids this Halloween season
Add a little spooky fun into the afternoon by making a simple (and not too scary) skeleton craft for kids. Keep it classic, or add color and sparkle for Día de los Muertos. Supplies for Your Skeleton Craft
This craft activity is fun, and you probably have almost everything you need at home. Gather the following items: Cardstock quality paper, brass fasteners, pipe cleaners, hole punch, glitter glue, googly eyes, gemstones, markers, ink pens or just about anything else to get a skeleton ready for the holidays.

There are a lot of great (and free) downloadable skeleton templates floating around, so take the time to look for one the kids love. Our pick for an easy download is this happy little guy. His smile and big bones make for easy coloring and decorating; he most definitely won over the artist at our writer's home.
Lay Out the Bones to Decorate
After you've cut out the pieces, lay them out for easy decorating. This is also a great opportunity to squeeze in a little science lesson about bones and the body.
Ears and Eyes and Mouth and Nose
We decided to start with eyes so the skeleton could see "what was going on," but feel free to start decorating anywhere. At this point, kids can go wild with markers, jewels or whatever else they have on hand.
Glitter glue works great for kids who want to create a sugar skull for Día de los Muertos. Add black swirls and lots of color to make it pop.
Punching Time
After everything has dried, grab a hole punch; if there isn't one in the craft box a skewer works well, and make the holes at the designated points on the template.
Get It Together
Using the fasteners (also called brads), attach all the slinky pieces to one another. If the fasteners are too long, fold them up on the backside of the skeleton to conceal them.
Silly Dancing Bones
Finally, this slinky skeleton is ready for action. Create a wall hook with a fun colored pipe cleaner; attach it with glue or punch a hole at the top of the skull and loop through. This craft will be a perfect decoration to pull out year after year, and you can even have the kids create a new one each year!

The best Atlanta trick-or-treat neighborhoods and events
Become one with the creatures of the forest at the Chattahoochee Nature Center. Explore the mysterious forest on a guided night hike during the 37th Annual Halloween Hikes. This is a family-friendly hike with music, crafts, and campfires and is perfect for a non-scary Halloween event for all ages. But make it a new Halloween tradition. Hikes held on October 28 and 29.
This Buckhead neighborhood is bound by Moore's Mill Road on the south, I-75 on the east, and the Paces neighborhood on the west, and is especially happening in the streets surrounding the Morris Brandon Primary Center. Expect a neighborhood draw and loads of kids.

Located at Penn Avenue and Myrtle Street, from Fourth to Eighth Streets, you'll find The Midtown Neighborhood Association is hosting its annual Bash on Halloween this year. The Halloween Bash, which is now a spooktacular block party, will allow the kiddies to party for two extra hours. The family can enjoy food, mysterious fun, and trick-or-treating during the extended time.

Ashford Park Neighborhood
This neighborhood in Brookhaven, surrounding Ashford Park Elementary School, is known for its pedestrian-only Redding Road segment of Halloween revelry, but the streets near Redding Road equally embrace Halloween. The best news? Ashford Park, located at Redding Road and Caldwell Road, is known as the "push toy park" and is the perfect spot to calm an over-excited (or over-sugared) little one down before heading to the next house.

Virginia-Highland
Not far from Inman Park, you'll find elaborately decorated homes, sidewalks, and plenty of streetlights in Virginia Highland. Just steer clear of North Highland Ave. This particular neighborhood may be more geared toward older kids and adults. Some bars and restaurants celebrate Halloween, but it may be a bit scary for the tiny tikes. Find it: Start at Barnett St. and Adair Ave. in Atlanta.
Inman Park is probably one of the best places to trick or treat. With streets of Victorian houses (not so spooky any other time of the year, but really—have you ever seen a haunted house that's not a Victorian?), Inman Park is the perfect backdrop for trick-or-treating. The neighborhood takes decorating for Halloween seriously, so expect some legitimately spooky displays, but it's a fun and safe environment suitable for some serious fun.

Historic Brookhaven
While the homes in Historic Brookhaven are a bit more spread out, the streets in this beautiful neighborhood are easy to navigate and are filled with little trick-or-treaters every Halloween.

This historic neighborhood in Atlanta has a bit of the Halloween flair year-round, with massive Victorians lining the streets. These (possibly haunted) homes go all out for trick-or-treating and are close together to maximize your candy and minimize your walking. The Atlanta Zoo is also nearby and a great place to trick or treat and have a howling good time. Kiddies can dress up as their favorite animals and hang out with them at the Boo at the Zoo. Don't forget you can also go ghost hunting and "Capture the Spirits" at the Oakland Cemetery.

Avondale Estates
Annually on Halloween night, the City of Avondale closes some of its streets, issues a detailed safety map for trick-or-treaters, and awards homeowners City of Avondale Estates Halloween Spirit Awards for best decorations, scariest, most creative, and best decor for kids. This year, a neighborhood parade will end with spooky treats, good eats, and ghostly fun!

Chastain Park Neighborhood

3. Carmel Mountain Ranch
The highly walkable and stroller-friendly cul-de-sac neighborhood streets of Carmel Mountain Ranch make for easy paths to fill up your goodie bags. Little ones who aren't going to make it out on Halloween night or just want a headstart on the weekend can visit Carmel Mountain Plaza’s free trick-or-treat event on Oct. 31. Participating stores hand out candy to kids age 12 and younger and you can enjoy balloon art and listen to live music from 80’z All-Stars. 4. Miramar
If you’re in the armed forces (or have friends who are), military housing complexes are some of the best spots to go trick-or-treating. A high density of families means tons of kids in costume and parents eager to share the experience.
5. Carmel Valley
Carmel Valley's safe neighborhoods and warm community spirit make it an ideal and popular locale for family trick-or-treating. Just east of Carmel Valley, trick-or-treat before Halloween at The Village Pacific Highlands Ranch's Halloween event. Kids can go door to door to collect goodies from participating merchants, boogie down to live music and strike a pose because there will be complimentary photography.
6. Bressi Ranch, Carlsbad
Homes in this beautiful neighborhood are decked out beyond belief in Halloween decor. Many abodes look like they've been professionally fashioned with spooky decor, lighting, music and effects generally reserved for venues like Disneyland. The homes in this neighborhood are situated close together, which makes it easy and comfortable for little kids to go door to door in a short amount of time. 7. Shoppes at the Forum, Carlsbad
The Shoppes at Carlsbad will once again give local families a convenient, indoor option for little ghosts and goblins to snap up some goodies earlier in the afternoon before other evening activities.

8. Encinitas
Don't miss the awesome Safe Trick-or-Treat event in downtown Encinitas on Halloween from 5-8 p.m. located on Historic Highway 101 (Encinitas Blvd. to K St.) where the Encinitas 101 Main Street Association will present its 20th Annual Safe Trick-or-Treat event. Local businesses stay open late to welcome trick-or-treaters and all along the 101 there are several places to stop and enjoy Halloween-Themed activities. Make sure to swing by the Lumberyard courtyard to enjoy music and games!
9. Santa Fe Hills in San Marcos
Santa Fe Hills has previously been voted the #1 best neighborhood for trick-or-treating in San Diego—and for good reason! The houses in this community transform into festive and spooky abodes with carved pumpkins and decorations that wow—but beware—some of the decor and spectacles may be too scary for very young kids, so proceed with caution. If you do feel like braving this neighborhood, you'll surely get an eyeful!

10. Little Italy
Check out the Annual Trick-or-Treat on India St. in Little Italy. On Oct. 28, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., little monsters are encouraged to dress up for this fun and safe Halloween tradition to enjoy trick-or-treating throughout Little Italy. The event will kick off in the Piazza della Famiglia with Halloween décor, music and some trick-or-treating. After grabbing a map of participating Little Italy businesses in the Piazza, little ghouls, witches and goblins can walk from door to door along historic India Street to get delicious Halloween treats and candy from the local businesses that are taking part in the event. Bring your family out for a night of sweet and spooky fun! It gets crowded, so we suggest arriving early.

The zoo's Halloween event Seattle families clamor for is back for 2022. So grab your costumes to enjoy this weekend of Halloween festivities, and all kinds of pumpkin eatin' at the zoo's Pumpkin Bash. Watch as hippos, otters, bears, penguins, and other animals gobble, smash, and play with pumpkins and other autumn-themed treats, part of the zoo’s excellent animal enrichment care program. It's also a chance for your costumed kiddos to trick-or-treat around the zoo, going from one station to the next.
Insider Tip: During Pumpkin Bash, one child 12 years and under in costume is admitted to the zoo free with a paid adult admission.
Put on your Halloween costume and head over to Kelsey Creek Farm in Bellevue for this fun mini event. Kids ages 2-10 will get to go trick-or-treating with the farm animals and see what costumes they're wearing. Plus they'll have a ghoulishly good time decorating a trick-or-treating bag, making a paper plate jack-o'-lantern, and visiting the real pumpkin patch. Come dressed for the weather because this Eastside favorite takes place rain or shine.
This Halloween, a costumed train ride is in order for your little ghouls and goblins. It's all aboard for a fun-filled two-hour train excursion that puts the changing colors of the scenic upper Snoqualmie Valley on display. The train will be decked for fall, bringing the sights outside in. The journey begins as you go west to the top of Snoqualmie Falls, stopping at the top to enjoy the view. Then it's time to return east to the Railway History Center for a 30-minute stopover that includes seasonal activities and a visit the Train Shed Exhibit Hall. Costumes are encouraged, and all children arriving in costume will receive a small prize! Tickets are required.
Although families can always expect a wild time at Northwest Trek, things are getting spooky on the weekends in October. So dust off your Halloween garb and prepare to wander past magical lights, eerie spider webs, and pumpkins everywhere as you work to solve the mystery of the forest. Is it ghosts? Goblins? Bigfoot? It’s up to you to figure it out during this park-wide scavenger hunt. Remember to end your exciting adventure with time at Kids’ Trek where your little ghoulies can slide, climb, jump, and explore until they’re boo-ed out.
Explore the Northwest Trek Wildlife Park at night—safely! Walk the animal paths, lit with spooky lights and visit multiple trick-or-treat stations along the way. Remember, nocturnal animals are wide-awake for Hoot 'n' Howl and the Kids' Trek Nature Playground will be lit up for the occasion, too.
If you're looking to add something a little wild to your Halloween adventures, bring the kids to Northwest Trek for the annual Pumpkin Chomp & Stomp. A Halloween event Seattle kids love, you'll find the park’s many trails will be adorned with picturesque pumpkins and the many animals that call the park home will get in on the pumpkin love, too. Watch them chomp, stomp and roll all day as they get fed pumpkin treats.
Halloween might be the perfect time to head down to the Hands On Children's Museum in Olympia. Parents can always count on this Halloween event to be light on scary but heavy on fun. The hay bale maze, scavenger hunt, ghost puppet making, and pumpkin decorating are just the right speed for the mini set. And everyone will enjoy science demos on weekends by Dr. Science himself, as well as the costume dance party. You get all this plus over 150 other hands-on exhibits to explore.
We know you and the kids will have a happy howl-o-ween at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium’s Halloween-themed weekend. Get ready for ghostly games that'll have you guessing which skull belongs to which animal, who makes that sound, and what does that oversized pumpkin actually weigh? Playing at the Kids' Zone is a great way to round out the day after you've seen the costume parade at the Wild Wonders Outdoor Theater (it starts at noon). How many squash and pumpkins can you spot at Bloedel Reserve? Woodland owls will lead you on an all-ages scavenger hunt through the gardens in search of gourds, squash and pumpkins. Guess the weight of this year’s largest pumpkin and win prizes at the Shop at the Gatehouse when you complete the scavenger hunt.
Highline MaST Aquarium’s annual Halloween festival will be full of hands-on activities, skeletons, and creepy crawlies of the sea. It’s that time of year again, when the Museum of Flight transforms into the Museum of Fright for their annual Halloween celebration. Dress in your best space suit, pilot's costume or any other Halloween get-up then head on down for safe, Halloween-themed games and activities that will spark imagination and innovation and get everyone in the Halloween spirit.
Gather up your little ghosts and goblins and head to Wild Waves Theme & Water Park near Seattle for their annual Fright Fest. One of our favorite Halloween events on weekends, the park transforms into a scream park with amusement rides and family-friendly activities your little monsters will love. You can count on family-friendly fun Saturdays and Sundays from 2 p.m.-6 p.m. But beware, the park transitions to Fright by Night between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m., so keep that in mind as you make your plans.
Good to Know: None of the decorations around the theme park are scary. However, Extreme Screams, Voodoo Swamp and the two haunted mazes are not recommended for kids under 13. Reservations required.
Calling all witches to one of the best Halloween events in Seattle—a Witches High Tea! It’s a chance to practice your craft and perfect your spells, and costumes are most certainly encouraged. Expect to be welcomed into the 112-year old coven with an ethereal tea service: enjoy savory tea sandwiches, alluring treats and cakes. Witches of all ages are welcome, and for the more seasoned sorcerers, otherworldly libations will be available. Seatings are every half hour between 1:15 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. Tickets available with or without alcohol.
Earn your candy this Halloween at the 14th annual Run Scared race benefiting The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Whether you're signed up for the 10K, 5K or the 2-mile walk/run, you'll want to don your spooky best so you look the part. This year at the Stone Mountain Pumpkin Festival you can play all day and glow all night. After the sun goes down, the jack-o-lanterns light up, a sillier-than-spooky Nighttime Parade commences, and you'll find plenty of other not-so-spooky glowing experiences. Although not really a haunted house, it is a little spooky at night will all the glowing jack-o-lanterns, and it's a fun event for the little ones.
Take a train of terror (and one of not-so-terror). The Family Time train is designed with younger guests in mind, and is meant to be nonthreatening and fun. Scare Time begins at sunset when the ghosts and ghouls of Pine Mountain are set loose to haunt. A total of three trains will depart every hour beginning at 6:20 each night. Closing time varies nightly – make sure to check! Ticket reservations are not required, but are highly recommended. Tickets are available on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights in October.
The Village is an outdoor haunt experience at the Renaissance Festival grounds that takes visitors on a tour of a village that has been cursed by evil forces. The residents have been acting strangely, and are mutating into creatures with a taste for human flesh! Better for your kids aged 13 and older, expect intense scenes and scares, character interactions, and plenty of thrills. You'll also find food, drinks, and games in the Courtyard area before or after your tour.
The Buford Corn Maze is an Atlanta Halloween tradition. Between the hayride, the bounce house, the pony rides, and the corn box (not to mention the five-acre corn maze), there's plenty here to entertain without the spook factor. But if your older kids are ready for a scary Halloween, come on Friday or Saturday night, when the haunted forest is open from 8 p.m. until midnight. Kids of all ages are allowed, but use your best judgement, and you'll need to accompany kids under 8. It's $16 for the corn maze, haunted or regular.
Timing your Six Flags visit is the key to serving up just the right amount of horror for the kids. During daylight hours, the festive Kids Boo Fest (Sep. 17-Oct. 30) is a chance for families to get treats in Trick-or-Treat Town, watch Halloween-themed shows, and jump on one of two hayrides. Once night falls, it's time for Fright Fest with terror-filled rides and wandering monsters and zombies. This one's not for the faint of heart. For families with various ages, keep the little ones in the scare-free kid zone while the big kids go exploring after dark, or stick to the day time events to keep it family-friendly.

It's not exactly a haunted house, but if you want an immersive Halloween experience that's 100% kid friendly, Boo at the Zoo is the event you've been waiting for. With a trick-or-treat trail, a costume contest, a big cast of costumed characters and plenty of fall activities, Boo at the Zoo will get your whole family in the Halloween spirit without keeping little ones up at night.
If you're not sure how well your kiddos will handle spooky after-dark activities, Fearopolis could be the perfect introduction to the haunted house experience. Kids will enjoy the competitive games like pumpkin launching and laser tag, and if they want to test their limits of fear, the haunted house gives some startles and scares without overwhelming first-timers. Please note these activities are recommended for kids over 10.

Attend the Kids Monster Fest The Kids Monster Fest is a special matinee haunted house experience for children 12 and under and scaredy cats of all ages. Guests will be allowed into the largest Underhill Haunted House nighttime haunts: Underhill Manor. Upon entering young guests will receive a magic wand that will frighten any ghouls, monsters, or creeps away. Also, guests should try and find Harry, the very cute resident bat. Oaks Park Scare Grounds Portland's only Scream Park returns to one of the oldest amusement parks in the country, the historic Oaks Amusement Park. The Event features three horrifying haunted walkthrough attractions: House of Horrors Scarezone, Graveyard Pumpkin Patch, Last ‘Scream’ Photo Op. There are also Oaks Park thrill rides, games, and concessions. But we know you want to know about the not-so-scary option for little kids. Little ghosts and goblins are invited to join for Midway Trick-or-Treating during select hours. Get a trick-or-treat bag from any game booth, then stop by the carousel, train, mini golf course, and each Midway game for goodies.
Bella Organics Haunted Corn Maze Open every Friday and Saturday night through October, this Halloween activity starts at dark. Get lost in acres of corn with the kids. Creatures stalk you as you make your way through the Haunted Corn Maze. This year the Sauvie Island Haunted Corn Maze will be inspired by suicide prevention, a theme we can all get on board with. If you're wondering which option to take with kids, try the earliest time available.
If you kiddos are too young for such a scare, Bella Organics has a far less scary corn maze to be enjoyed earlier in the day. It's open on Halloween and includes access to hay rides a cow train and even a petting zoo with lots of animals your little ghosts will love getting their hands on.
