Colorado photographer, Mandy Penn wanted to put a smile on everyone’s face during the pandemic. Penn, who is a huge Friends fan, wanted to incorporate her favorite show into one of her photo shoots. She put out a casting call and the rest is pure magic.

The idea first came to her when her friend was pregnant with twin girls. Penn said, “Since I was just starting to do newborns I ran the idea of a Friends themed photo shoot for her girls past her.” Once she got her friend on board Penn ran with the idea, searching for props and a couch. When all she could find was a $200 couch she called up her good friend who offered to make the couch for her from scratch. Next, she needed to find the props, from a foosball table to a lobster to a turkey hat. She even included a smelly cat. Penn didn’t leave out one detail.

“Pizza Baby” Celebrates Second Birthday With Pizza, Of Course!

If your toddlers are like mine, they want to snack constantly yet getting them to eat something convenient and nutritious is a challenge. Rather than take the easy way out and feed my toddlers a steady diet of mac n’ cheese I asked MamaDoc Dr. Wendy Sue Swanson, a pediatrician, mother to two, and Chief Medical Officer at SpoonfulONE for some advice.

Dr. Swanson shared some of her favorite, nutritious, high-protein toddler snacks that your little one will love. You can feel confident about as a parent because they are the same snacks Dr. Swanson fed her own toddlers.

In general, there’s a lack of diverse foods in baby and toddler foods on the market,  so finding a variety of healthy snacks is your toddler likes is important. When thinking about offering a snack, Dr. Swanson advises parents to do their best to keep the sugars low and the protein levels high. She suggests offering lots of diverse colors and textures. According to Dr. Swanson, offering a diverse diet doesn’t just ensure your toddler gets the nutrients they need, it also lowers the risk of developing a food allergy.

photo: Vitolda Klein via Unsplash

Here are Dr. Swanson’s top 10 snacks for toddlers:

  • Hummus and veggies are a great source of fiber and protein. Try carrots, cucumbers, bell peppers, and tomatoes for variety.
  • Make a smoothie packed with fruits and maybe even a handful of spinach for vitamin K. This is a great way to introduce foods with new colors and flavors that are easy to love.
  • Cube up some turkey meat and cheddar cheese. Turkey meat and cubed cheese are also known to be great snacks for toddlers’ oral health. This is a great alternative to cracker-like snacks (think Goldfish) that get stuck in toddlers’ teeth and can lead to tooth decay.
  • Peanut butter or any nut butter with apples is a great choice. We know that babies and toddlers need to be introduced to nuts early and often to reduce food allergy risk. This yummy option makes it easy.
  • Black bean quesadillas are easy to make and can be served warm or cold. What kid doesn’t love a quesadilla? Build on the food they already love and add black beans for protein and fiber.
  • Plain, full-fat yogurt with berries makes a great toddler snack. Yogurt is one of the best sources of probiotics and live cultures, which are friendly bacteria. Top with some berries and maybe even a bit of honey once Baby has reached 1 year. (Honey before age 1 is not recommended due to botulism risk.)
  • Protein-filled pancakes are a great way to sneak in an extra nutritional punch to this staple of toddler diets. Kodiak Cakes are a great choice because their mixes are packed with extra protein and can be combined with an egg and milk to add in even more, but you can also make protein-packed pancakes yourself by using ground-up oats in your mixture.
  • Banana slices with peanut butter on top is always a hit because it is a more sweet snack or treat. It also helps toddlers work on their pincer grasp skills.
  • Eggs are a safe go-to for a toddler snack. Kids definitely can have a preference when it comes to eggs. Try cooking them in a variety of ways: scrambled, hard-boiled, or poached until you find one they love. Eggs are a great protein source and most children love them.
  • Sweet potato fries are a great alternative to regular fries and the perfect finger food for kids of all ages. No salt needed!

Happy snacking!

The Best Walk for Animal Sightings

The National Zoo

The National Zoo offers miles of trails with guaranteed animal sightings and, if you get cold, there are a number of animal houses you can duck into to warm up.  Due to COVID, you do need to reserve your free pedestrian pass prior to a visit (car reservations are now $30 and include entry for up to 4 visitors), but with well-controlled crowds you can rest assured that your walk in these woods will be socially-distanced. The Best Hike for Winter Bird Watching

Nellie B. via Yelp

You don’t have to drive far to be completely immersed in nature. Just 8 miles from the Roosevelt Bridge, Turkey Run Park offers family-friendly hiking on terrains that range from mostly flat to extremely rocky. Be sure to bring the binoculars; bare trees mean it is easier to spot the birds and critters that make this park their winter home. Be sure to bring this book to help i.d. one of the 140 species of birds that spend time in Turkey Run. There are a number of trails, but the short loop off the C-1 parking lot is most favored by families. It’s a steep incline to and from the parking lot but is otherwise smooth and flat near the river (and offers some pretty amazing views!). More wooded paths provide the opportunity to jump across streams and hop on rocks, but these trails are best suited for sure-footed preschoolers. If you wander away from the river’s edge, be sure to track your whereabouts by GPS; trail markers are faded or missing on many of the paths.

When you hike across a snowy terrain in snowshoes you double the amount of calories you'd burn by walking the same distance. Score! Plus, it's a fun activity the entire family can enjoy: if your child can walk, they can be fitted for shoeshoes!  To walk across a  winter wonderland, you'll either need to wait for a DC snowfall or put some miles on your SUV. Thanksgiving feasts can still be (relatively) cheap! If you’re trying to save money around the holidays this year, you might be alarmed by the news of food inflation and scarcity. Fortunately according to Consumer Reports, there are plenty of ways to conserve cash while you shop for the big day.

As it turns out, your standard Thanksgiving food items are actually cheaper this year than the previous two years. You can get a basket of root vegetables and name brand items (like Ocean Spray cranberry sauce or Pillsbury pie crusts) for $22.31, down 36 cents from 2020. And the prices of big turkeys (16 pounds and up) have dropped around nine percent, making it an economical choice and a great source of leftovers.

funny jokes for kids, holiday jokes for kids, thanksgiving jokes.

Other tips to save money? Check your store for promotions around the holiday, but don’t get tricked into spending over budget just to snag a cheaper turkey. Buy in advance rather than getting caught in the crowds and to take advantage of “while supplies last” deals. And don’t feel the need to spend a lot on pricey appetizers, since the Thanksgiving meal is known to be super filling on its own.

As you’re shopping for holiday meals in general, it pays to get a store loyalty card, which often offer gas deals, too. You can take advantage of tech in the aisles by using a Consumer Reports recommended shopping app, like Basket, Ibotta or Flipp, which help you shop for the best savings. Finally, store brands tend to be 20 to 25% cheaper than their name brand counterparts and often taste nearly identical.

Ready for the ultimate Turkey Dog? It’s not a hot dog made with turkey, it’s a turkey with hot dog flavors! If you’re undoubtedly curious, we have the scoop on the recipes below.

Why settle for the same old boring turkey on Thanksgiving when your bird could turn into a dog? Reynolds Wrap has come up with three new styles of turkey that are inspired by hot dog styles and toppings. And yes, they involve ketchup, mustard, pickles and chili cheese:

  • The Chicago-Style Turkey Dog is rubbed with celery salt and ground mustard, then glazed in yellow mustard. The finished masterpiece is served over pickle spears, chopped onions, sport peppers and tomato slices.
  • The New York-Style Turkey Dog has a zesty onion powder rub and a bright-red ketchup glaze. It’s topped with sauerkraut, homemade onion sauce and spicy brown mustard.
  • The Chili Cheese Turkey Dog doesn’t have actual chili on it, but it’s coated in a chili powder rub. Once out of the oven, it’s topped with shredded cheese, onions and sliced jalapenos.

You can get the full instructions online as you prep for Turkey Day next week. Your kids will likely be excited at the prospect of a hot dog-flavored turkey, but it’s certainly unconventional. 25 Simple Ways to Keep the Kids Busy on Thanksgiving

38 Incredible Thanksgiving Desserts (That Aren’t Pie)

Thanksgiving is a time of togetherness for family and friends.

Legend has it that the Pilgrims made it through their first winter in the New World thanks to the Native Americans who provided food and shared their means for survival in a harsh climate.

Traditional Thanksgiving fare includes mashed potatoes, stuffing, yams and other vegetables, cranberry sauce, ham, and of course, the main attraction, the Thanksgiving turkey. This is all followed by pumpkin or apple pie (or both, in my family) topped with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

Wow, I’m salivating for that meal already, but it’s still more than a week away.

Wait, isn’t it Christmas already?

No, you say?

But everywhere I go, I see Christmas garlands strung across store aisles, Christmas tree farms are throwing open their gates, inflatable snowmen have replaced their jack-o’-lantern counterparts, and Santa has set up camp at the mall.

When I was younger, I remember that after Halloween, I would continue to see autumn-themed decorations and other trimmings wherever I went; it was basically Halloween décor minus the scare factor.

It was still autumn and everyone was celebrating the “Harvest Season.” Thanksgiving was always a nice, smooth transition into the “Christmas Season.”

Now with retail taking more and more of a chunk of our attention to the holidays, The “Christmas State of Mind” needs to start earlier and earlier to feed the gift-giving frenzy of a confused populace who keep thinking Christmas is right around the corner, forgetting that speed bump called Thanksgiving.

Why squeeze out a holiday that is totally non-denominational, brings family and friends together for delicious food, and reminds us to show gratitude for all our blessings?

So I’m here, with a defense of Thanksgiving—let’s slow down and enjoy November, its fiery show of leaves going out in a blaze of glory, the countdown to the Thanksgiving Feast, the constant reminder to “give thanks” inherent in the name of the season.

And to those who wish to rush, don’t panic. As soon as you finish that last bite of turkey and stuffing, you may don your ugly sweater and play those Christmas carols. You still have an entire month, after all.

18 Tips for Raising Grateful Kids

Thanksgiving is the premiere holiday for food lovers. After all, when else are you making a multi-course feast with all of the best comfort foods? And a new study shows that if there aren’t any leftovers to enjoy as a result, more than half of people believe the holiday is ruined.

A study conducted by OnePoll, on behalf of Stasher surveyed 2,000 Americans about their Thanksgiving meal preferences. Turns out, leftovers are a really big deal, since more than two-thirds said they taste better than the original meal. And 35% of respondents eat the leftovers for five days or more after the initial meal!

Most people (72%) prepare their holiday feast with the intention of having leftovers. But what’s the best way to enjoy them? Respondents mentioned Turkey Tetrazzini, breakfast potato pancakes, a casserole, or even stuffing everything into an avocado.

Finally, pumpkin pie is delicious, but many people believe it shouldn’t be eaten any other time of year except during the holidays. If you’re looking for a dessert that’s a bit more versatile, we have 38 non-pie options for your consideration!
