Meet the New Treat in Town: A New Shave Ice Spot Opens

With LA’s topsy-turvy winter weather the kiddies are craving something cool. Luckily, a new ‘healthier’ twist on fro-yo has wound up on the Westside. Sweet Crush Ice Bar brings Asian-inspired shaved ice and milk snow to family-friendly Brentwood in a groovy modern space on San Vicente, next door to Whole Foods. Made with real, fresh fruit and premium ingredients like whole vanilla beans, Earl Grey tea, and espresso, patrons big and small will enjoy a thirst-quenching frozen refreshment that satisfies a sweet appetite that isn’t overindulgent.

Step up to the kiddie-level counter and pick a Sweet or Pure Crush. The Sweet are milk-based flavors with a creamy texture that’s lighter than ice cream yet conveys the strength of its infusion. The block ice spins, shaved into delicate ruffled ribbons that melt on your tongue. The rich cocoa will remind little ones of frozen hot chocolate (a nod to NYC’s Serendipity), while parents needing a pick-me-up can get a fix with Espresso or Earl Grey, less sugary than an iced blended but with the requisite caffeine.

Milky offerings also include Peanut Butter, Mango, Coconut, and Vanilla. For cuties preferring fruit, try a water-based Pure Crush, with popular choices such as Strawberry Lemonade, Pomegranate and Tropical Siesta hinting of pineapple. Exotically inclined kiddos may sample pink guava, passion fruit, lychee, blood orange, grapefruit ginger or mojito (without the alcohol).

Go for a kid’s size or share regular or large, with options for fresh fruit toppings, chocolate in the form of rocks, curls or pearls, or salty-sweet chocolate-covered sunflower seeds.  Gratis drizzles include caramel and chocolate for enhanced sweetness.

The light, contemporary shop reflects the purity of its ingredients. White lacquered walls with snowflake cutouts are backlit, programmed to emit rotating bright rainbow colors.  Sleek benches line the wall, inviting little ones to climb up to savor their flavor. Just beyond the counter, a ‘V’ shaped nook forms a conversation area, punctuated with a working fireplace, thanks to the former pizza parlour occupant.

All ages will be delighted by a private space of back bleachers opposite a wall showcasing interactive iPads. Snap a photo or record a video and share it on the spot. Adult playdates encouraged.

See you there!
