From winter lights and stroller hikes to skate parks and epic playgrounds, these are some of the best winter activities and things to do around San Francisco
One of the perks about living in the Bay Area is that winter is a pretty awesome time—you can take the kids hiking one day and play in the snow the next. Of course, you can’t ignore our world-class art exhibits—a great way to get some culture and head indoors when the weather is frightful. Here are some of our favorite family activities for when the temps top out at an oh-so-frigid 60 degrees.
1. Visit Cal Academy’s outdoor play space, Wander Woods, where hands-on playing is encouraged—crawl through a log, build a den, run through a maze, and more.

7. It's newt season! Also called orange-bellies, these adorable amphibians emerge during the wetter months of winter but just look, don’t touch—these guys are poisonous. Join a guided newt hike in Briones Regional Park or in San Ramon.
8. Burn off some energy by letting little groms warm up and drop in at one of these cool skateparks.
15. The next California King Tides (the highest and lowest tides of the year) will be Dec. 23-24, 2022 and Jan. 21-22, 2023. Mark your calendars to explore the coastline and tidepools near San Francisco during the lowest tide of the year—exposing sea life that is normally hidden.

12. Take a Drive Down Christmas Tree Lane
The 3200 block of Thompson in Alameda has been celebrating Christmas by putting on an epic lights display every year since the 1930s. Go and check out the neighborhood of 55 houses known throughout the Bay Area as Christmas Tree Lane, and try not to feel too bad about your own efforts. The lights go up on December 3 and stay on until New Year’s Day, as per tradition.

Looking for post-present activities? These things to do in Seattle on Christmas Day will keep your crew entertained
Just because the presents are all opened and the wrapping paper is all over the floor doesn’t mean that the fun has to stop there. There are still a lot of things to do in Seattle on Christmas Day that your family can enjoy from sun up to sun down. From taking a hike to eating a good meal to looking at the lights that you were too busy to see before now—we’ve got them all right here. Check out all that is available to you this year.
1. Go Ice Skating
Whether you want to head to the Eastside or drive north to Everett, the 25th of December is a great day to go on an ice skating adventure. So grab your skates if you've got 'em. The Bellevue Downtown Ice Rink will be open from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. and the Pacific Ice rink will be open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Both will have festive music and hot cocoa at the ready, so you can warm up when you're done. Advance tickets are recommended for both rinks.
Bellevue Downtown Ice Rink 100 100th Ave. N.E. Bellevue, WA
This year's Gingerbread Village isn't actually a village this time around. The theme is "Buzzing Back" with larger-than-life gingerbread creations based on the Disney/Pixar film, Lightyear. Local architecture firms were paired up pastry chefs (and a few children) to create works of art made with gingerbread, cookies, candy and a lot of frosting. The display can be viewed at the Sheraton Grand Seattle. Admission is free, but donations will be gladly accepted which will benefit the Juvenile Research Foundation. Viewing times are between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m.

3. Enjoy George Balanchine's The Nutcracker at Home
If you wanted to take the kids to see George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker at McCaw Hall, but just weren't able to fit it in before Christmas, why not bring the ballet to your home? A digital-only presentation is available from Dec. 19-27, 2022. It's the perfect way to get your annual sugarplum fairy fix, without the fuss. To watch at home, simply purchase your digital ticket, then let the kids dance, sing, and take as many potty breaks as they need while you stream this fabulous show.
There are quite a few restaurants who will be open and welcoming guests this Christmas and we're not talking about the greasy spoon down the street. If you want this year's holiday to be special (and who doesn't?) consider splurging on a good meal that your family will be talking about for years to come. Those taking reservations for dinner for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day or both include The Dining Room at The Salish Lodge. They will be offering a fantastic three-course meal. Arrive early enough in the day that you can take in the amazing view of the falls before your feast. Chef Brian Doherty would love to host you at The Goldfinch Tavern located at the Four Seasons Hotel with view of Elliott Bay. The George at the Fairmont Olympic Hotel will be serving family-style dinners. Ray's Boathouse will be serving three-course meals while Ray's Cafe will be offering a la carte specials.

5. Bundle Up for a Hike
We'll keep our fingers crossed for a sunny winter day so you can take the kids hiking on Christmas. Heading out for an easy hike at a nearby park, sanctuary, or forest preserve is a great way to get the kids outside for some fresh air—a tall order with all the rain we've been having. Waterfalls and streams are especially magical this time of year. Just remember to wear layers, bring water, and have spare socks (along with other winter essentials) in your pack before you head out.
If you’re longing for a white Christmas, pack up the kids, gas up the family roadster and head towards the Cascade Mountains. There are two spectacular family-friendly day destinations waiting for you there. At Suncadia Resort, you'll find all the winter activity your family needs—ice skating, tubing, snowshoeing and more in one location. And with restaurants that will be serving up eats all day, you can keep everyone happy from sun up to sun down. The Bavarian town of Leavenworth (pictured) will be festooned with over 500,000 lights and decorations, from one end of the main drag to the other. Stop in the shops, sit down to a hearty meal and take it all in before heading home. The best part? Both are perfect destinations for an overnight, too.
For some families, catching a flick on the big screen has long been a Christmas Day tradition. Maybe that's why so many good movies are released over the Christmas weekend. This year, families can sit down to Puss in Boots: The Last Wish where the lovable feline is coming to grips with that fact that he only has nine lives to live and prepare for an ultimate showdown with Jack and Jill. Roald Dahl's Matilda: the Musical debuts on Christmas Day telling the tale of an extraordinary girl with a vivid imagination (and a magical touch) who dares to stand up for herself. Disney's Strange World is a sci-fi adventure comedy about three generations exploring new worlds and trying to survive each other. The semi-autobiographical story about director Steven Spielberg's life growing up is told through The Fabelmans. And the l-o-n-g awaited Avatar: The Way of Water is finally here continuing the story from the first film. Better re-watch that one first to get caught up.
You can drive around your own neighborhood to look at Christmas lights or head to a decked out 'hood like Ravenna's Candy Cane Lane, but if you really want to get up close and personal with a dazzling holiday light display, it doesn’t get any better than the Holiday Lights & Delights at Westlake Park or Occidental Square. The oversized light sculptures of presents, ornaments and arches aren’t just for ogling at—some are for walking through too.
If a day on the mountain sounds good to you, you're in luck. Our wet winter has meant early snowfall in the mountains, so most of the Seattle-area ski slopes are open already. Whether you've got a season pass or you need to grab a lift ticket for the day (they're selling out fast!), there's no better day to carve than Christmas, when the slopes are less crowded than usual. So strap your skis onto the rack and head to the hills today. Hint: If you're not a skiier, you can also snag a ticket to go tubing at The Summit at Snoqualmie.
When it comes to the best Christmas lights Portland has to offer, these displays are totally lit
The City of Roses should be renamed the City of Lights during the holidays, as far as we’re concerned. Starting right after you finish up Thanksgiving dinner, running throughout the month of December, Portland is ablaze with fun and unique light displays that will brighten up anyone’s day. So after you’ve picked out the perfect tree for the season, fill your thermos with hot chocolate (maybe a hot toddy for the parents), bundle up the kids, and check out these holiday light displays that will brighten your season.
Portland International Raceway Christmas Lights - Winter Wonderland
If you're looking for drive-thru Christmas lights in Portland, head down to the Portland International Raceway for a one-of-a-kind holiday experience. Recognized throughout the Pacific Northwest as the “Largest Holiday Light Show West of the Mississippi,” the 30th annual Safeway Winter Wonderland is unlike any light show you’ve ever seen. Spectators become part of the show as they drive through the track, taking in more than 250 set pieces and animated displays along the course. The Christmas ships are coming! A fleet of ships have sailed down the Willamette and Columbia Rivers every year for 67 years. Grab a perch with a view (restaurants along the route book up quick), pack your thermos and blankets, and watch the floating lights go by. This is a great parade, and the best part is, you can catch it almost every night in December for free. Be sure to check online for when they’ll be closest to you, as the route changes. It's the perfect winter evening activity for tiny boat enthusiasts (and their parents).
The Grotto’s Christmas Festival of Lights features more than two million lights and is the largest Christmas choral festival in the world. Enjoy the amazing sounds of local schools, churches, and civic groups as you explore the beautiful property. Concerts are scheduled each evening and families can also enjoy outdoor caroling, puppet shows, and storytimes.

Christmas on the Campground
Drive by or stroll through the Apostolic Faith Church’s campground to enjoy thousands of lights with the kids this year. The lights are on from dusk to dawn at this free display, and music plays at two different times throughout the night. In addition to the life-size nativity scene, the coolest part of the display is hands down the ginormous Christmas tree at the heart of the display. It's the tallest in Southeast Portland, and it's one reason to bring the kids to see this festive display.
Add Lightopia in Hillsboro to your light tour this year. Families can take in all the beautiful sights as you drive along a half-mile winter landscape. This free display is open for visitors on Sundays through Thursdays, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on weekends until 10 p.m. One thing to note, you'll need a reservation to drive through, so snag one while you can.

One street you absolutely cannot skip is Peacock Lane—known as Portland’s Christmas Street. Located in S.E. Portland, each house on this little street has been taking Christmas cheer to the next level since 1932. From nativity scenes and rotating trees to re-enactments of your favorite holiday characters and movies, Peacock Lane continues to delight visitors from near and far. You can find this super sweet displays along S.E. Peacock Lane between SE Stark and Belmont Streets.
Insider Tip: Families can walk the display without car congestion on pedestrian-only nights. This year they're scheduled for December 15-17.

South Carolina is renowned for many things: its subtropical beaches, world-class golf courses and iconic gastronomy. What visitors may not know is that The Palmetto State is also home to the Old 96 District—a monumental region whose rich history dates back to the 1700s.
The Old 96 District, which spans the Abbeville, Edgefield, Greenwood, Laurens and McCormick counties, has been drawing in families from all over. With its one-of-a-kind experiences (and of course, small-town, Southern charm) road trippers are looking to its unexpected wonders for a memorable family road trip.
For an adventure down the road less traveled, we’ve compiled a list of hidden gems throughout the Old 96 District that’ll deliver historical landmarks, scenic views, arts and culture, and more in a very unique way.
1. Hidden Pasture Unicorn Farm
Remember that unicorn your tot begged for on their third birthday? Now is your chance to allow them to get up close and personal with ponies or, as your little one will call it, a “real-life unicorn.” Located in Laurens County, Hidden Pasture Unicorn Farm offers pony rides and plenty of farm dogs, chickens, roosters, turkeys, rabbits, and farm dogs to see.
2. Abbeville Opera House
In 1904, Abbeville Opera House opened its door to the local community as a cultural center, hosting musicals, live stage productions, comedy shows, film screenings, campaign speeches, and town events. Today, the Opera House is fully restored to its turn-of-the-century condition, featuring a 7,500-square-foot stage and two concessions. Wow your kiddos with a behind-the-scenes look at the original rope-pulled rigging system that lowers and raises the stage’s curtains.
3. Winchester Museum at the National Wild Turkey Federation
As the only museum in the world dedicated to wild turkeys, the Winchester Museum in Edgefield provides insight into the National Wild Turkey Federation’s ongoing conservation efforts and a look at the rich history of our favorite Thanksgiving birds. Children will be amazed at the museum’s colorful dioramas and will discover more about the five different species of wild turkeys.
4. Diamond Hill Mine
Grab a rock hammer, shovel, gloves and anything else your mining crew may need to dig up stunning crystals at Diamond Hill Mine. Located outside of Due West, with over six acres of land, the mine is one of the largest in the South and is covered in gems like amethyst, smoky quartz, and skeletal elestial. Diamond Hill is also “unsalted,” meaning that every crystal you discover is true to the Earth–thanks to erosion that took place in the southern part of the Appalachian Mountains.
5. Battle Of Musgrove Mill State Historic Site
Old 96 District is best known for its role in the American Revolutionary War in the 18th century, and fortunately for history buffs, many of these battlegrounds still remain. Head to Clinton to explore the rolling fields of the Battle of Musgrove Mill for an educational touch point on your road trip. Your children will learn the history of the battle’s surprise ending and hike the trails with historical markers.
6. Dorn’s Grist Mill
Travel back to 1898 at Dorn’s Grist Mill in McCormick where your little ones can get an up-close view of America's agricultural and industrial history. Originally built as a cottonseed mill in 1898, the two-and-a-half-story structure was converted into a flour and gristmill in the 1920s and still houses much of its old equipment. Today, the Mill is listed in the National Register.
7. The Phoenix Factory’s Old Edgefield Pottery
A half museum and half working study, the Phoenix Factory's Old Edgefield Pottery is continuing the 200-year-old tradition of making and firing high-quality pottery. Make a stop at the museum to see a wide variety of 19th and 20th century Edgefield-inspired ceramics and purchase a one-of-a-kind pot from the store for the road.

The fireworks on the National Mall are one of the most spectacular shows in town. Set against the Washington Monument, there are a couple key vantage points for optimal viewing (check out our insider tips below), but a number of other area fireworks are also stunning (and many promise lesser crowds). Whether you want to celebrate America’s birthday in our nation’s capitol or you’re looking to venture further out of the city, we’ve found the best places to catch a dazzling display of fireworks in Washington, DC and beyond.
National Mall Fireworks
The National Mall becomes the ultimate amphitheater every July 4th. If you’re looking for something more low-key, you can still catch this awe-inspiring show beyond the Mall.
For a quiet, sensory-friendly evening: head to the National Cathedral. Boasting the highest point in the city, you can take the DC fireworks without all the noise. Another high vantage point can be found at Cardozo High School near U St. This is a hot spot with locals that guarantees a low-key vibe.
