“Teachers are the experts? Teachers have all the knowledge? Are you kidding me?” said the school board chair.

The principal of Florida’s Tallahassee Classical School was forced to resign under pressure from the board after parents complained that sixth graders were shown a photo of Michelangelo’s classic 16th-century sculpture, David. One parent apparently even called the statue “pornographic,” in case you needed to know how fraught the education system has gotten in Florida.

Now-former principal Hope Carrasquilla has told reporters that the situation was “a little more complicated than that,” a sentiment that was echoed in a completely unhinged Q&A with the school board chair, Barney Bishop, who said, “We’re Florida, OK? Parents will decide. Parents are the ones who are going to drive the education system here in Florida. The governor said that, and we’re with the governor. Parents don’t decide what is taught. But parents know what that curriculum is. And parents are entitled to know anytime their child is being taught a controversial topic and picture.”

What the former principal and the school board chair agree on is that normally, parents get a letter warning them before something like David is shown in class. This year, due to “a series of miscommunications,” as Carrasquilla put it, the letter didn’t go out.

Carrasquilla added that one parent was “point-blank upset” and “felt her child should not be viewing those pieces.”

Carrasquilla was given the opportunity to resign “voluntarily” (with a letter of resignation given to her by Bishop) and told that if she didn’t sign the letter, the board would meet to discuss firing her with cause.

Tallahassee Classical School is a public charter school where students are chosen for admission on a lottery system. As Bishop put it, “Parents choose this school because they want a certain kind of education. We’re not gonna have courses from the College Board. We’re not gonna teach 1619 or CRT crap… The rights of parents, that trumps the rights of kids. Teachers are the experts? Teachers have all the knowledge? Are you kidding me? I know lots of teachers that are very good, but to suggest they are the authorities, you’re on better drugs than me.”

He also insisted that “classical education” is about “moral values, civic values, personal responsibility. Those are the things that aren’t being taught in schools. Along with history, science, math, art, music. We don’t have safe spaces for kids so they won’t be offended by a Halloween costume. We don’t use pronouns. We teach them phonics. We teach Singapore math. They learn to speak Latin. Every student learns a musical instrument.”

But a work of art that’s been considered a masterpiece for literal centuries? Best to protect kids from that.

Sweet Mickey’s

Named for owner Randy Brinker’s grandmother and built around a sense of community, Sweet Mickey’s has quickly become an institution in Ballard, an area with no shortage of sugary options. They host regular activities for neighborhood kids—think Halloween costume contests and readings of How the Grinch Stole Christmas—but it’s what's inside that matters: beautiful truffles, drawers of gummies, an assortment of licorice (lots of salty selections for Ballard’s Norwegian contingent) and gorgeous gift baskets put together in-house for every occasion.

Sweet sensation: Fudge is one of those sweets that’s generally not worth the toothache, but not so at Sweet Mickey’s. Here, it’s made fresh in-house—soft, smooth and addictively delicious—in about a dozen seasonal flavors that rotate throughout the year.

The Confectionery

This old-timey candy shop has been family owned and operated in University Village for more than 40 years, and a local favorite for just as long. The shop is a candy-coated dream worthy of Willy Wonka, with 100 different gummies, 30 types of imported licorice (both salty and sweet), 60 kinds of nostalgic candies like Ring Pops and Necco wafers, and more chocolate than you can imagine. And no matter what the holiday, the seasonal assortment of treats can’t be beat.

Sweet sensation: Consider The Confectionary your one-stop shop for special occasions. They’ve got piñatas for birthdays; teacher, hostess and wedding gifts; and an amazing selection of seasonal goodies for every holiday on the calendar.

Seattle Chocolates Factory Store

For over 25 years, Seattle Chocolates has been making, packaging and shipping more than a million pounds of decadent truffles and chocolate bars, plus seasonal and special occasion products out of its 60,000-square-foot Tukwila warehouse. Although you won't find an old-school vibe here, you will find a variety of truffle bars (the dark chocolate peanut butter is our favorite), Jcoco chocolate tasting boxes that explore the different cacao percentages of dark chocolate and origins of chocolate, individually wrapped truffles, seasonal bars and Valentine's Day chocolates that will make your kids (or your sweetie) smile. The Sunshine Collection brings light (and playful chocolate combos) to Seattle's grey winter days, as does Seattle Chocolates' spirit of giving back—10% of net profits goes to Girls Inc.

Sweet sensation: It's got to be the Experience Chocolate tour. During the tour, families (kids must be at least 6 years old to participate) will get a behind-the-scenes look at how Seattle Chocolates makes their divine confections. They'll also learn about the history of chocolate and get a chance to taste Seattle Chocolates' signature recipes.

Husky Delicatessen

OK, so technically it’s not a candy-only store, but unless you’re on a candy-only diet, we don’t think you’ll mind. Aside from making some of the best sandwiches in West Seattle and offering a killer lineup of homemade ice cream, Husky Deli has a delightful assortment of international candies—plus chocolates from brands like Cadbury, Milka, Ritter Sport and Kinder—near the back of the store. And much of it is behind a display case, so you’re less likely to deal with sticky-fingered bandits who end up with a handful of treats in their pocket.

Sweet sensation: Sometimes simple is best, and a baggie full of chocolate-covered goodies can’t be beat: raisins for the kiddos, espresso beans for you.

Johnson Candy Company

Want to experience a real-life history lesson with your sweet-toothed tot? Head to Tacoma. Johnson Candy Company isn’t made to look like the retro sweet shops from the ‘40s and ‘50s—it is that place, preserved in all its vintage charm. Unlike other shops, Johnson is still making their own chocolates, dipping some of them by hand even, on decades-old equipment. It’s a delicious trip back in time.

Sweet sensation: Though you’ll find all the usual sugary suspects here, the real draw is the chocolates. You won't find any foodie flavor combos here, but simple, delicious candy that's clearly made with love is sometimes all that you need.

Indoor or out, there are plenty of activities to keep your family busy in the new year!

A new year and a new month are just around the corner. If you’ve resolved to find amazing new adventures with your kids, we’ve got ideas—one for each day of the month, in fact. In between your snowy sledding adventures and your busy back-to-school schedules, try one of these family activities that’s anything but boring.

1. Celebrate the New Year at a National Park (psst…entrance fees are waived on January 16 because it is Martin Luther King Jr. Day). These popular parks have the outdoor bells and whistles families love or try a little-known park for a change of scenery.

2. Looking for other ways to celebrate 2023’s arrival with the kids? We’ve got family friendly ideas you can do at home.

Spirit Halloween costume memes ruled the internet this Spooky Season, and we can’t get enough of these hilarious versions

If you’ve ever perused the costumes on display at a Spirit Halloween store, you’ve likely LOL’d at many of them—due to copyright and intellectual property issues, these costumes can’t be called exactly what they are; instead, they’re kind of like the Costco generic version of movie characters and pop culture moments. For example, a Daenerys Targaryen costume might be for sale as “Blond Queen with Pet Dragon.” And thus the Spirit Halloween costume meme of 2022 was born. People have been creating their own versions of the generic, off-brand costumes you might see at Spirit, and the results are hilarious, if a little too on-the-nose at times.

If you’ve been on any social media over the last few weeks, you’ve likely seen at least a few Spirit Halloween costume memes. But to celebrate Halloween finally being here, we decided to round up some of our favorites. Below are some of the funniest, scariest, and most relatable versions of the biggest meme of the Halloween season.

Iced Coffee

If you can’t get through the day without hitting the Starbucks drive-thru (author sheepishly raises her hand), then this iced coffee costume may speak to you. It includes happiness and hopes and dreams, but also “always running late” and “I’m broke.” Scary relatable, TBH.

Oldest Sibling

Those with younger brothers and sisters will find this one all too relatable. This oldest sibling costume includes “all of your parents’ generational trauma and mistakes” and “soft spot for younger people who look up to you for some deranged reason.” BRB while I call my therapist about this one.

Your Ex

If you’d rather not speak of or think about your ex, here’s the costume for you.

Conservative Guy Scared of Cities

If you grew up in a small town and stayed Facebook-connected to high school classmates who never left, this one will hit home especially hard. Conservative Guy Scared of Cities naturally includes “saw that thing on the news” and “not scared bro.”

Unprepared Hiker

Ready to hit the trail? Not in this costume, which includes flip flops, a cotton t-shirt, a sunburn, and “delusions of grandeur.”

Teacher on School Bus

Anyone who’s ever been on a field trip will recognize this very scary costume, which includes glasses and “an astronomical volume of anger.”

Beacon of Light

Want to dress up as something good and pure in this dark, dark world. This “Beacon of Light” costume is just Dolly Parton, and we’re here for it.

The Only One Who Can Prevent Forest Fires

It’s a mirror, because as Smoky the Bear has been telling us for generations, only you can prevent forest fires.

Overworked Mom

This one speaks for itself.

The Perfect Mom

LOL.

Sandwich Artist

Even brands got in on the fun, like Subway, who created (and tweeted) a version of the meme that features a Sandwich Artist from one of their stores. The costume includes a hat and visor, as well as “opinions about the sub you’re ordering” (and a note that those opinions will not be stated out loud). Enjoy wondering what the sandwich artist thinks of your order next time you go to Subway.

My Dad

This one is empty. That’s the whole joke. It may be dark, but it’s OK if you still laughed.

Spirit Halloween Store

The joke was bound to get meta eventually, so here it is: The Spirit Halloween Store Spirit Halloween costume. Say that five times fast.

As usual, celebrities slayed the Halloween costume game in 2022. Here are some of our favorite fits from around the web

The grand finale of Spooky Season has arrived! Halloween is finally here, and with it, all the pumpkins, candy, spooky decor, and jaw-dropping costumes we’ve come to expect from the holiday. Some of the best costumes are designed and worn by celebrities, of course, and this year has been no exception. Famous revelers have been showing us how costumes are done (and giving us plenty of inspo for next year’s fits).

So without further ado, here are some of our favorite outfits celebrities were spotted in during the Halloween festivities this year, including JoJo Siwa as Draco Malfoy, Lizzo as Marge Simpson, and so many other great costumes.

JoJo Siwa as Draco Malfoy

Calling all Potterheads! Kids and adults alike are sure to love JoJo’s costume: the villainous Draco Malfoy. With slicked-back blond hair and a Slytherin robe, she unsurprisingly nails the look.

Kim Kardashian as Mystique (and her kids as hip-hop superstars)

Kim Kardashian is one celeb who always takes Halloween to a whole different level—and this year was no different. The reality star stunned in a skin-tight blue bodysuit as she went as the shape-shifting X-Men mutant Mystique.

In another photo, Kim revealed that her sisters, Khloe and Kourtney, got in on the fun with their own Marvel-inspired costumes: Magik and Selene, respectively.

But nothing could top Kim’s four kids, who rocked their costumes as some of hip-hop music’s greatest superstars. North went as Aaliyah, Saint went as Snoop Dogg, Chicago went as Sade, and Psalm went as Eazy-E.

Lizzo as Marge Simpson

Sometimes, there’s something to be said for keeping your costume old school. Case in point: Lizzo, who absolutely slayed as Marge Simpson, complete with yellow face and body paint and makeup accents that made her look 2-D.

Kylie Jenner as Elvira

Apparently retro was in for Halloween 2022, since Kylie Jenner, one of the top trendsetters on the planet, rocked an ’80s look: Elvira, the Mistress of the Dark (or “Kyvira,” naturally).

Paris Hilton as Sailor Moon

Paris Hilton has been nailing Halloween for years, and this year’s costume continued that trend. The heiress and reality star dressed as her “childhood icon,” Sailor Moon, even posting a photo of herself in her costume with a filter to make it look like an anime cartoon.

Jennifer Garner as “late for the bus mom”

Jennifer Garner got in on the biggest social media trend this year: meme-ing those off-brand Spirit Halloween costumes. Her version is one all moms will relate to: “Late to the bus mom,” complete with a wet hair wig, lukewarm coffee, and “will and determination.” Not included is your kid already waiting in the car for a ride to school, and of course, undergarments are optional.

In a hilarious TikTok video, Garner showed off her actual costume—or two costumes. Alternating between a haunted bride and a goth witch, Garner used Britney Spears and Madonna’s “Me Against the Music” to spoof a dance-off between the two characters.

Donald Faison’s Daughter Wilder as Dionne

Allow us to pick up our jaws off the floor. The original Clueless actor’s daughter is killing it as tiny Dionne in this excellent ’90s tribute costume.

Rebel Wilson as Barbie

With a new movie starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Reynolds on the horizon, we weren’t surprised to see Barbie costumes were popular this year. Getting in on the trend is Rebel Wilson, who rocked a Barbie box along with a few matching friends: Marissa Montgomery, Carly Steel, and Ramona Gruma, and Jacob Andreou as Ken.

Jana Kramer (and her daughter) as twinning witches

One Tree Hill alum Jana Kramer got festive alongside her two kids—she and her daughter, Jolie, rocked twin witch costumes, while little brother Jace went as Spider-Man.

Witney Carson as Cruella DeVille

Dancing With the Stars pro Witney Carson got her whole family in on the fun this year. She went dressed in a jaw-dropping Cruella DeVille costume, while her husband, Carson McAllister, and their son Leo went as two of her dalmatians.

The Burtka-Harris Family as Fast Food Mascots

Neil Patrick Harris, David Burtka, and their twins, Gideon and Harper, are known for their legen—wait for it—dary Halloween costume game. Just when we thought their family of four couldn’t possibly outdo last year’s horror movie take, along comes “Trick or Meat.”

Heidi Klum as a Giant Worm

If you (like the rest of the world) await the supermodel’s annual costumes, you know she’s never afraid to go all the way. In past years she’s been a human body (without skin), a seriously terrifying alien, Fiona from Shrek and of course, Jessica Rabbit from Who Framed Roger Rabbit?. As a giant worm, Heidi Klum’s Halloween 2022 costume might make the list of most wild ideas of all time.

Embassy Row
Around the world can be found when you knock on doors along Embassy Row, where international embassies stretch from the Vice President’s home all the way to Dupont Circle. More than 20 embassies invite trick-or-treaters to explore cultures from around the world. You may be handed a few tourism pamphlets along with your candy bars, but where else can you say you’ve been trick-or-treating in Indonesia, Armenia, Ireland, and Portugal all in one night?

Start here: Massachusetts Ave. NW

Capitol Hill
Candy flows in this family-heavy neighborhood with back-to-back row houses. Once you’ve had your lollipop fill, head to Eastern Market (or start there!) for some serious costume watching.

Georgetown
While crowds of people-watchers can definitely turn Georgetown’s Halloween into a Nightmare on M St., there’s something to be said for trick-or-treating on those narrow side streets, where the row houses are so close together; you can score twice the candy in half the time! Avoid M St. and Wisconsin Ave. proper unless you and your brood are more interested in seeing the coolest costumes in town (Georgetowners do know how to dress up!), and focus on the side streets where you’ll probably need two bags to carry all your loot.

Start here: Side streets between M St. and Wisconsin Ave. NW

Brookland
The real treat in Brookland is the house on Hamlin. You can expect over-the-top decorations from the owner of this rowhouse. Past themes include a haunted cornfield you could walk through and an ode to Stephen King's IT that featured 35 clown props. You'll find more ghoulish fun on Franklin St. near Langdon Park. Check out NextDoor for a map of homes offering treats.

Start here: 915 Hamlin St. NE

Chevy Chase DC
The hot spot for sugary loot can be found on Rittenhouse between Broad Branch Rd. and Utah Ave. The houses on these blocks go all-out with over-the-top decorations. When you've hit all the houses, be sure to take a stroll on The Avenue where local shops hand out sweets from 4-6 p.m.

Old Town Alexandria
A history of haunted houses and ghost stories set the stage for a frightfully fun All Hollows Eve in Old Town Alexandria. Kids can pound the brick-layered sidewalks and knock on the doors of old style Colonials at this popular trick-or-treating destination. Many of the shops along King Street hand out candy as well. For those on the hunt for a good haunt, we recommend the candlelight ghost tour.

Great Falls
With its big houses and lots of young families, Great Falls is a great choice for trick-or treating! And you can do some pretty epic pre-gaming as well! There will also be a pet costume parade, a pumpkin carving competition and kids in costumes get a free spin on the Capital Wheel (with purchase of an adult ticket). For more Halloween-themed fun, head to Gaylord National Harbor for selfies with Spookley the Square Pumpkin and indoor trick or treating.

Bethesda
Bethesda's Edgemoor community makes our list for its close proximity to downtown—and for its impeccably decorated houses. Little legs will have to travel a bit further between these stately properties, but epic decorations and generous candy allotments more than make up for the extra travel time between properties. After you trick or treat, head in to town for a late dinner or a cup of hot chocolate. Pro tip: You can park at the library, which is also the ideal starting point.

Start here: Connie Morella Library, 7400 Arlington Rd.

This easy DIY monster costume comes together in minutes!

October 31st is coming up fast, and if you want a charming Halloween costume for kids on the quick that you don’t need to worry about getting ruined, then look no further than this DIY Frankenstein costume. If they don’t want to be a monster, check out our other favorite last-minute Halloween costume ideas here.

Frankenstein Costume Supplies

old pants: anything with blown-out knees, ripped pockets, stains, or just too short, all work

an old shirt, ideally a turtleneck if you want to try to add the bolts. Best in any lighter color, not black or navy blue.

a black Sharpie

Optional: plastic toy bolts; yarn to add stitches

A slightly oversized blazer

For the face paint: green face paint and a black eyeliner

How to Make a Frankenstein Costume

Step 1. Shred It
Just go ahead and cut holes in the pants here and there. If it's cold when you go trick-or-treating, you can always wear an extra layer underneath (green is ideal!).

Step 2. Stitchery
Draw simple stitches on your shirt and a few across the pants. If you want to add some yarn stitches you can do that too.

Step 3. Neck Bolts

Basic: We used a turtleneck and a pair of plastic kid's bolts from a construction game. You essentially just cut small holes, slide the bolts in (backward), and put the nuts on to hold them in place. You could spray paint them silver if you want (we left ours black). The fabric of the turtleneck kept them from poking the neck or making it uncomfortable.

More advanced: You can also try making bolts using a headband to slide around the neck (this works well for older kids but little ones will probably lose track of this). We love this tutorial which is a little more involved but a bit comfier/less bulky.

Step 4. Face Paint

No need to go overboard with the green paint: you can make it a faint green that's relatively easy to wipe back off. Take black eyeliner and make stitch marks. Avoid putting marks over the eye or too near it as it makes it harder to wipe off later.

Don a blazer for the oh-so-Karloff look. Snowboots look great as clunky shoes, but sneakers will do the trick for your active tots.

Tip: This basic costume can be altered to become a zombie!

Make your baby’s Halloween costume a one-and-done event because, honestly, who has time for that?

Having a baby already requires more planning than we’ve ever done before. Keeping up with feedings and naps and socks (seriously, where are all their socks???) is more than enough without trying to figure out a 14-piece Halloween costume for them. Luckily, they’re already cute enough, so pulling together a baby Halloween costume is super easy with these one-and-done options!
