Editor’s note: This story is aimed to lower the chemicals you use in everyday life, such as silver polish, laundry softener, etc. but please follow the CDC guidelines for keeping your home and surfaces disinfected and clean to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Everyone loves a clean house, but you don’t always have to use products packed with chemicals to get things to sparkle and . From natural ways to soften your laundry to using lemons to shine your chrome, read on for 12 ways to clean without the chemicals.

Lemon

1. Use lemon juice to polish all that chrome and stainless steel in your kitchen or bathroom. We like to keep an extra bottle of already juiced lemon on hand for just such a reason, but if you’ve made lemonade and have lemon rinds left, you can actually use the lemon half right on corners.

2. You can also use said lemon rind, juice or a wedge to clean a cutting board. The lemon not only disinfects, it removes trace odors left behind from things like onions and garlic.

Vinegar (White)

3. Mix vinegar to water at a 3 to 1 ration (3 cups vinegar to one cup water) for cleaning windows and mirrors.

4. Use straight vinegar in a spray bottle to combat mildew. Spray offending area and leave for 30 minutes before rinsing with hot water.

5. Next time you’re at the grocery store, grab an extra one-gallon jug of white vinegar for your laundry room. Add a good 20 drops of essential oil, shake, and keep on hand for a fabric softener. Just add a half cup to each load (shake the jug to distribute the oils before each use).

6. Almost every hard-surface floor, from vinyl to hardwood, can be effectively cleaned with a simple water and vinegar solution. One cup vinegar to a half-gallon of hot or warm water should do the trick.

Baking Soda

7. Use baking soda with a hint of essential oil, like lavender, sprinkled in to deodorize your carpets. Sprinkle, vacuum up, inhale.

8. DIY your own room freshener without all the toxic chemicals. Just put some baking soda in a cute jar, add a few drops of your favorite essential oil (we love the combo of mint + lavender) put the lid on, and shake. Once you’ve got your baking soda + essential oils distributed, remove the lid and place several holes in it to let the freshening begin!

Salt

9. Use a teaspoon of salt to tepid water (not hot or even warm) to clean and disinfect water bottles (and sippy cups). This keeps you from that dreaded soapy water taste and neutralizes any lingering odors in your bottle. You can even soak the lids and sippy attachments in a mild salt solution, just be sure to rinse the heck out of it to flush the salty flavor away. A cotton swab with a salty paste can help get in the nooks and crannies of lids, too.

Oil

10. Cast iron skillet hack: If you properly season your pans, you won’t need to scrub too much but sometimes it happens. (Never, ever use soap and water on a cast iron skillet!) If you have a tricky sticky spot, use coarse salt and a vegetable scrubber dedicated to this purpose with a helping of cooking oil to clean off the gunk. While we recommend seasoning your pans after each use with a helping of cooking oil, try this lazy hack for every once in awhile: wipe your pan clean with a dry cloth and then spray with a cooking spray like Pam before storing.

11. Mix vinegar and oil together to make a furniture polish! Do it a 3 to 1 ration (so 3 tablespoons oil to 1 tablespoon vinegar). Or sub lemon juice for the vinegar. We recommend making this one in small batches (a little goes a long way) and applying with a super soft cloth, not a paper towel.

Toothpaste

12. Toothpaste cleans stains and tarnish on any silver surface. If you’ve got a detailed edge on an antique plate, a gentle toothbrush + toothpaste can take the tarnish out of the nook and crannies and is way less harsh than some commercial silver polishes out there (which can actually strip silver plating). Ditto this method for jewelry.

How do royals get their kiddos to eat? If you’re Kate Middleton you let your littles help out in the kitchen, cooking some of their fave foods! Listen up because Kate Middleton’s tips might just get your picky eaters into food, too.

The Duchess of Cambridge recently shared what Prince George and Princess Charlotte’s enjoy eating. And their picks probably won’t surprise you. Like plenty of mac ‘n’ cheese-loving kiddos, the royals also enjoy “cheesy pasta”. Along with the ooey, gooey dairy delight, three-year-old Charlotte is also majorly into olives, according to the Duchess.

So what got Middleton to open up about her kids’ meal-time picks? During a recent visit to the Lavender Primary School (as part of Children’s Mental Health Week), the Duchess got the chance to check out one classroom’s “mood meter.” The project helps the students better understand the connection between food, body and mind.

According to Ivy Learning Trust chief executive Matthew Kleiner-Mann, during the event Middleton talked about how she gets her kids involved in the kitchen, “She was telling us how much her children love cooking and how they cook for her.” Kleiner-Mann also added, “They made cheesy pasta the other day. One stirs the flour, one puts the milk and butter in. And they make salads and stuff.”

Cheesy pasta that Prince George and Princess Charlotte whip up? Salads and stuff? Maybe the royals are just like us. At least when it comes to keeping kids busy in the kitchen.

Target’s Cat & Jack Line Is Expanding to Include Adaptive Apparel for Kids

There’s a sort of beauty that comes with seeing things in hindsight, right? We notice tiny little things of importance and goodness and often tend to gloss over the not-so-great stuff. Recently, I’ve started approaching my role as a parent with such a perspective. I’m still very much in the thick of raising two toddlers under the age of four, but I’m already seeing how quickly time passes and if it makes any sense at all, I already miss these days, even while I’m living them.

I had such a realization this evening when I was picking up the house before the kids started their baths. I entered my bedroom and was immediately greeted by the tiny chair that my daughter had propped up against the door. She had been trying to reach the top of my dresser earlier, where I keep my necklaces. Then, I saw my son’s toy trucks strewn all over the floral carpet.

I thought the mess looked pretty manageable, all things considered, and then I noticed the baby food pouch that someone had stepped on. Pureed mangoes, peaches and (this is the fun part) beets were splashed all over the place, with one particularly purple stream hitting my stark white dust ruffle just so.

For a second, I just stood there and took it all in. Yes, it was a mess, and yes, I was more than a little irritated that they’d just left it and assumed I’d pick it all up like I always do. Still, it was golden hour, and the sun was pouring through the plantation shutters, and in that particularly beautiful light, I didn’t really even see the mess. I saw hours of play, joy and laughter.

I pictured my four-year-old daughter lugging that chair in from her tiny table in the kitchen, then stepping up on it to get a clandestine look at mama’s jewelry box. I pictured my son, sitting comfortably on the floor, playing quietly with his favorite toys. Then, I pictured my bedroom put back exactly the way it had been five years ago before babies were even a word on our breath.

I closed my eyes and saw my unruffled comforter, pulled tightly at the corners without a single wrinkle. My dresser always stayed dusted and wiped clean on the top and my necklaces were never tangled. I had my diffuser on the nightstand and every night I’d drip in some lavender essential oils and my husband and I would drift off into dreamland, not waking up in the middle of the night for anything, but actually indulging in eight hours of uninterrupted slumber. Yes, it was a sweet time back then, but right now is even sweeter.

Give me the messes and the memories. Give me the toy boxes crammed all the way to the top like a game of Tetris, with tops that won’t close and are about to fall off the hinges. Give me the sticky cupboard drawers with misplaced and mismatched kitchen tools  Give me baseboards with the paint nicked off from a plastic bike that really should be outdoors but is more fun inside.

Give me the chaos and the craziness, because these are hands-down the best years of my life and if I’m going to spend them in a tornado of toys, so be it.

It’s not in my nature to tolerate a mess. The younger version of me wouldn’t let the sunset on a sink full of dirty dishes, but here it is close to midnight and their cartoon plates and half-full milk cups are sitting waiting to be washed. I’ll get to them soon and one day this little house that we worked so hard to restore and decorate will look like a showroom again.

For now? It looks like a family actually lives here. And judging from the ten pictures of Crayon hearts that decorate and clutter up my refrigerator, it looks like we love here, too.

Hi, y'all! I'm Courtney. I'm a mama of two, married to my high-school sweetheart and making a life in the little town I grew up in. I'm a writer by trade, but a mama by heart. I love chocolate and I love family. Let's navigate this crazy, messy, blessed journey together!

So you want a donut? Well, you could head out to the local grocery store and buy a dozen. Or, if you’ve got a really, really, really extra-large family, you could go to the nearest warehouse club and buy a pallet of them. Oh, but you don’t want just any ol’ donut. Voodoo Doughnut is open at Universal CityWalk, and it’s bringing visitors all kinds of sugary sweet awesomeness!

Along with the warm weather, spring brought us all donuts—at Universal Orlando. Okay, okay. We know Orlando is in Florida. And that means two things: 1. Spring, summer, winter or fall, the weather’s pretty warm all year ‘round, and 2. This is the first East Coast Voodoo Doughnut location.

What can you expect from Universal CityWalk’s newest donut shop? To start with, much more than your typical bakery would bring. Voodoo Doughnut offers more than 50 different choices. And while they’re getting the usual suspects (such as frosted with sprinkles), they’re known for their…um, less of-the-norm flavors.

With donuts such as Tangfastic (yes, it’s topped with Tang), Mexican Hot Chocolate (with cayenne pepper), Grape Ape (with grape dust and lavender sprinkles) and Voodoo Bubble (it has a piece of bubble gum in the middle), you’ll find absolutely everything you never know you wanted.

Netflix’s “Stranger Things” Is Coming to Universal Studios This Halloween

There are few things that take us back to the ’90s like scrunchies, Lips Smackers, a bottle of Vanilla Fields and a trademark two-toned Caboodle used for storing all your rocking, colorful makeup. Luckily for us, Urban Outfitters is bringing back the iconic makeup tackle box for just $10––our inner ’90s girls are rejoicing.

Created in 1987, the Caboodle took it’s cue from a photo printed in People of Wheel of Fortune’s Vanna White toting her makeup in a Plano Molding tackle box. Plano decided to use their design to manufacture an official makeup box, complete with mirror, deep storage and swing-out trays which are all reminiscent of their super-efficient fishing tackle box.

And thus, the Caboodle was born.

In the 31 years since Caboodles was founded, we’ve seen lots of updates to keep the box modern and on point. The company now offers train cases, bags, valets, countertop acrylics and teen-specific boxes, but nothing compares to the original which was probably the first-ever makeup carrier for us 90’s girls.

What sets apart the Urban Outfitters Caboodles (aside from the wallet-friendly price) are the iconic colors and original swing-trays which bring back tons of memories talking on your party line while reading Tiger Beat. You can pick from mint green, lavender and pink which have been described as “vintage-inspired.”

Pass us the night cream, please.

Alright, who’s adding a Caboodle to their shopping cart? Let us know in the comments!
