The little ones are at that age where they start to speak in proper sentences and parents are at that stage where we panic about whether their child is school-ready. Parents try to teach them how to read, write, count and about shapes and colors but these toddlers just want to play! While we know from research studies that play is essential for kids to grow and develop, parents can’t help but feel anxious about getting them ready for kindergarten.

Preschoolers have an attention span of approximately five to 10 minutes. It’s almost impossible to teach them how to recognize numbers and count before they start to run around again, unless it’s through an engaging activity. Don’t worry, parents, Dearest is here to help! Here are four fun and engaging ways to teach numeracy—literacy for numbers—to preschoolers:

Cooking

Cooking is one of the most fun activities to do with the kids! Children love making things and the best part about cooking is being able to eat what they’ve made! Incorporate counting while preparing ingredients to familiarize your child with numbers. You can practice counting with them while adding the ingredients to the dish as well. Teach them to recognize the numbers by having them read the instructions from a recipe. There are so many ways of incorporating numeracy into cooking and it’s such an enjoyable activity for both the parent and child.

Arts & Crafts

Children love crafts! Not only does it help children with creativity and fine motor skills, it also allows so many ways of incorporating numeracy too. Check out the various activities with different learning goals here!

Singing

One of the best ways of remembering things is through songs. It is much easier to remember things when there is a rhythm and melody incorporated. It’s exactly how we learn the lyrics to a song! Singing counting songs with your toddler will help them remember the numbers easily. It’s a simple method that benefits your child in many other ways too!

Reading

We all know the huge benefits of reading so why not engage your child with a counting book? If your child finds the counting book too easy, give them a challenge to create their own book about numbers! That way, the little ones would be training their motor, reading, writing and numeracy skills all at once!

In a recent interview with Country Living, Gaines shared how she uses her spot-on design sense and oodles of expertise to make the whole shared bedroom thing work.

Her top tips focus on letting each kid have their own space within the shared space. Specifically, Gaines recommendations include:

Starting with a neutral palette to allow the kiddos to add accent pieces they love.

Making a space for each kid to display their own toys or display nick-nacks.

Letting the kids accessorize in ways that express their personality.

Becoming a parent is one of a kind. You can read every baby book on the planet and still not be fully prepared for the experience of bringing a new human into this world. Here are a few things you probably wish you had known before you brought your baby home.

Photo: Suzanna Palmer

1. You can trust your gut.
Everyone – your mother-in-law, your bestie, the cashier at the grocery store – will have an opinion about the “right” way to do most everything when it comes to baby. Don’t second-guess yourself, and do what works for your family.

2. Babies are not a competition.
You’ll be tempted to compare e-v-e-r-y-thing baby with other moms. We’re talking sleeping schedules, timing of the first tooth and when baby rolls, crawls, walks, etc. Resist the urge. Your baby will do everything in his own sweet (and perfectly healthy) time.

3. A few newborn outfits are all you need.
In those early newborn stages, you’ll be too bleary eyed to change baby into all those cute newborn outfits anyway, so stick with the easy stuff: onesies and footie-pajamas. Also, buttons are the devil during middle of the night diaper changes. Zippers for the win.

4. You will sleep again.
It may feel like the merry-go-round of feedings and diaper changes will never end, but sleep will come again. Eventually.

Photo: Tom Piowaty Photography

5. Poop will become a “regular” topic of conversation.
It happens. You’ll talk about it a lot – and not just to your pediatrician –  to your husband, your best friend, your childless friends. You won’t discriminate when it comes to Baby’s number twos.

6. Mom Bod is Real.
Reaching your pre-pregnancy weight does not mean your body will look the same as it did before baby. All the parts will be the same, but they’ll wiggle and jiggle in a whole new way. Hello, tiger belly and banana boobs.

Photo: Jennifer Chong via Flickr

7. It takes a village.
Surrounding yourself with other mamas who you can share this journey with you and offer support doesn’t mean you’re weak. It means you’re smart.

8. Baby is #1.
It sounds obvious, but when you have to turn down an invitation to an event that will throw off baby’s schedule, ask Grandma to wash her hands before holding baby, or remind visitors to take off their shoes, things can get awkward. Baby’s well-being always come first. No apologies necessary.

9. Everything is a phase.
Feeling like a hot mess as baby works his way through teething, sleep regression and every other challenging phase? Hang in there. Those tough days feel like an eternity, but they’ll be over soon.

Photo: Suzanna Palmer

10. Dad still needs loving, too.
When you’ve got a tiny human relying on you every. second. of. the. day, it’s easy to forget about the big human who helped you create her. Be as intentional about loving him as you are about caring for baby. (Okay, maybe even half as intentional will do.)

11. Postpartum love-making is scary.
When doc gives you the “all-clear” at your six-week appointment, you probably won’t be anxious to rush home and jump in the sack. When you think about what came out of there a few weeks ago, sticking something else in just isn’t that appealing. Getting back to a pre-delivery comfort level takes time.

Photo: Ian D. Keating via Flickr

12. Feelings can’t be trusted.
Post-delivery mood swings are legit. That voice telling you to run away to some remote island in Bermuda isn’t.

13. You don’t need a lot of “stuff.”
A wipes warmer, changing table, bouncer and swing can make parent life a whole lot easier, but the only true essentials are milk, diapers, warm clothing and a whole lot of love.

Feeding a baby new to the solid-food scene? Trying to nourish an on-the-move toddler? If you’re not already hooked on pouches, here are five reasons why you should try them.

Convenience

If you’ve taken on the task of handcrafting your baby’s meals – chopping, steaming and pureeing every veggie and fruit under the sun – you’ll love how easy it is to grab a pouch. Sure, you didn’t make it fresh from your garden-grown organic crop, but there are many organic brands with little to no added ingredients that offer a very healthy supplement. So when you’re short on time or on-the-go, pouches are the best.

At the beginning, you’ll probably need to help your newbie eater get the good stuff out of the pouch. You can either squeeze the puree out onto a spoon, or buy a special spoon attachment that universally fits on the end of the pouch. Try Munchkin Click Lock Food Pouch Spoons (pictured above) that come with covers for the spoons, just in case your baby doesn’t finish it all in one sitting.

Later, your baby will be able to feed himself the pouch making it a generally mess-free (aside from the occasional time your baby decides to squeeze it before placing it in her mouth) and beyond easy snack or meal.

Speed

Before your baby can use a spoon to feed himself, he can hold a pouch and suck all of the goodness out of it all by himself. That’s right, your babe can eat sweet potato puree solo. This is a miracle. Now, while he chows down, you can be pushing the stroller, feeding your older child, making yourself a well-deserved meal, or whatever you need to do. And, most babies slurp these down fast. In a matter of seconds he can have polished off a serving of healthy, organic veggies and all you had to do was pop the top.

Portability

While you need to keep any homemade purees cold on the go, pouches are shelf stable, meaning you can toss them in your diaper bag without a cold pack. That said, once opened, they do need to be refrigerated and consumed within 24 hours.

Nutrition

Pouches can add new foods and nutrients to your baby’s diet. You might not puree beets yourself, or make a mix with kale and chick peas, but you can find these ingredients mixed together in baby food pouches. This means you can serve a greater variety of flavors and produce. Plus, some pouches, like Plum Organics Mighty Veggie and Happy Family’s Love My Veggies (part of the Made to Matter Handpicked by Target line) boast a full serving of vegetables.

DIY Ability

Love making your own baby food and knowing exactly what’s inside? You can make your own pouches too! You can fill these adorable, reusable Squooshi pouches (pictured above)with your own purees or smoothies – get creative with your own healthy and yummy blends featuring your baby’s favorite flavors. Cleaning isn’t as tough as you might think, thanks to a bottom zipper that opens the pouch up wide. While you could use a funnel, pastry bag or steady hand and pouring from a pitcher, to make things easier, a special pouch filling station is offered. Another option is to go with the Infantino Fresh Squeezed Station, which helps you quickly fill BPA-free one-time-use plastic pouches.

What’s your baby’s favorite pouch? Tell us in a Comment.
