We’ll be supporting these AAPI & Asian-Owned brands all year!

May is AAPI Heritage Month! It’s a time when, according to asianpacificheritage.gov, “The Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum join in paying tribute to the generations of Asian and Pacific Islanders who have enriched America’s history and are instrumental in its future success.”

We’re celebrating by showcasing some of the best brands in the world that are owned and run by Asian American and Pacific Islander entrepreneurs. These brand represent the creativity and innovation of the community, and supporting them is a great way to honor this month of learning. Afterall, it means putting money directly into the hands of business owners. While we believe it’s extremely important to learn and educate ourselves this month (and throughout the year), supporting AAPI and Asian-owned brands is a tangible way to make a difference. From fashion to food, beauty to tech, we’ve got a little something for everyone on this list. Get ready to discover some amazing AAPI and Asian-owned brands that you’ll love just as much as we do!

The Judy Blume Forever trailer is here, and the beloved, iconic author is ready to tell us her own story

Name an author more iconic than Judy Blume—I’ll wait.

Blume is the children’s book juggernaut behind “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,” “Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing,” “Blubber,” and so many other seminal works that may as well be required reading for kids of a certain age. Blume’s books are comforting, relatable, and honest—but that’s why she’s fought against book bans for her entire career, as censors have tried to keep her writing about crushes, periods, bras, and sex away from kids’ eyes.

Get ready to hear about all that and more, in Blume’s own words, directly from the legend herself. A new Prime video documentary, Judy Blume Forever, is set to examine the author’s legacy, with plenty of input from Blume along the way. Just check out the new trailer that dropped.

“I grew up as a good girl with a bad girl lurking inside, so by the time I started to write I really had a lot to get out,” Blume explains in the trailer. “I could be fearless in my writing in a way that maybe I wasn’t always in my life.”

And if that doesn’t just sum it up.

The trailer also reveals that the documentary will include cameos from a lot of famous faces: Molly Ringwald, Lena Dunham, Anna Konkle, and Samantha Bee can all be seen talking about their own experiences with Blume’s books and sharing their thoughts on her impact.

“Everything I learned about sex or crushes, I learned from Judy,” Ringwald shares. Um, same.

In a particularly touching moment, the trailer shows how Judy Blume Forever will examine Blume’s impact through the many letters she’s received from readers over the years. Blume personally answered as many letters as she could and even kept up years-long correspondences with some of her fans.

In a time when book bans and other scary censorship laws seem to be in the headlines every day, we could all use a little more Judy Blume. Judy Blume Forever premieres on Prime Video on April 21.

Jennifer Coolidge is set to play an overbearing mother-in-law in Shotgun Wedding, and the trailer is gold

Jennifer Coolidge is truly having a moment. Fresh off her success in her role as Tanya in The White Lotus, the star is taking on a new character: an overbearing mother-in-law. More specifically, JLo‘s overbearing mother-in-law. A new trailer for Shotgun Wedding featuring Coolidge in all her glory is here, and now we officially can’t wait to see the movie.

The new trailer gives us more of a look at the movie’s supporting cast, which includes Coolidge alongside Sônia Braga, Cheech Marin, Selena Tan, and D’Arcy Carden.

Shotgun Wedding stars Josh Duhamel and Jennifer Lopez as a couple getting ready to tie the knot. But disaster strikes when their destination wedding is crashed by pirates who take their families hostage, at which point the good-looking duo attempts to escape to a neighboring island to find help—if they can get there without killing each other first. Prime Video describes the R-rated rom-com as a “hilarious, adrenaline-fueled adventure as Darcy and Tom must save their loved ones.”

Coolidge, despite being a supporting character, seems likely to play a significant role based on the two trailers that have been released so far. In the first trailer, which dropped on Oct. 4, she can be seen handling some heavy-duty weaponry as she helps the families escape the pirates. In the newest trailer, which dropped earlier this week, we get a clearer view of Coolidge as the movie’s comedic relief, including one scene where she leads the wedding attendants in a sing-along of Edwin McCain’s “I’ll Be.”

If you’ve been looking forward to Shotgun Wedding for a while, you’re not alone—it’s been in the works at Prime Video for quite a while, but was held up when Armie Hammer, originally planned to play the lead opposite Lopez, was accused of misconduct and needed to be recast. But finally, the countdown is on. Shotgun Wedding will be available to stream on Amazon Prime on Jan. 27.

Apple TV is offering free viewings, no subscription required

Last year, Apple TV+ threw the world a hail Mary when it allowed It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown to be broadcast on PBS in October. This year, the streamer is going a different way to show the special, and it will still be free for non-subscribers!

Back in 2020, Apple bought all the rights to the Peanuts specials, which means that the only place you can catch the beloved classics is on Apple TV+. That is still the case today.

Existing subscribers will happily put It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown and the other holiday special on repeat, but what if you don’t want to pay for another subscription just to get your dose of nostalgia? There are several ways you can watch––for free.

Apple TV

First, if you’ve never subscribed before you can head over to Apple TV and sign up for a free 7-day trial. There’s no need to wait until Oct. 31 either––It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown is already available for viewing.

You can also watch A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and A Charlie Brown Christmas while you’re enjoying your trial! You will need to enter credit card info however, so set a reminder to cancel after seven days if you don’t want to pay $4.99 a month.

New this year, Apple TV is providing special free windows for non-subscribers to stream! From Oct. 28-31, you can watch It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown without having to sign up for a subscription.

Free windows will also exist for A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving from Nov. 23-27 and A Charlie Brown Christmas from Dec 22-25.

Not only is it a nod to fans of the original, but it is also a big, fun, broad audience movie,” said Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke. “We are thrilled to collaborate with Joel, Doug, and this great cast led by Jake Gyllenhaal, and for them to come together to reimagine the classic MGM film as an action-packed adventure for our global audience.”

While the original movie did so-so in the box office, its early ’90s cheesiness made it a cult classic for generations since. You’ve got a bar called the Double Deuce, Sam Elliott’s mustache, Patrick Swayze shirtless through a large portion of the movie, bad guys, and The Jeff Healy Band—how can you lose?

The remake will star Gyllenhaal as an ex-UFC fighter who “takes a job as a bouncer at a rough-and-tumble roadhouse in the Florida Keys, but soon discovers that not everything is what it seems in this tropical paradise,” according to a press release. Gyllenhaal will be joined by Billy Magnussen, Daniela Melchior, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Lukas Gage, Hannah Love Lanier, Travis Van Winkle, B.K. Cannon, Arturo Castro, Dominique Columbus, Beau Knapp, and Bob Menery.

“I’m thrilled to put my own spin on the beloved ‘Road House’ legacy,” said director Doug Liman. “And I can’t wait to show audiences what Jake and I are going to do with this iconic role.”

“The original Road House has a special place in my heart and I am so excited to bring this newly imagined version to audiences around the world. Doug and I have each made some big, boisterous action movies and are ready to bring everything we have to this one,” added producer Joel Silver.

Gyllenhaal can next be seen in Guy Ritchie’s upcoming film The Interpreter, but we’re now not-so-patiently waiting to see how he tackles Road House, which is so near and dear to so many.

The Amazon original movie is set to go into production in the Dominican Republic later this month and will stream on Prime Video worldwide when it’s released.

With baseball season well underway, Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television are getting in on the action. The pair has finally dropped the official trailer for the upcoming series, A League of Their Own! The show, which is a spin-off more than a reboot of Penny Marshall’s classic 1992 film, starts with the 1943 formation of a women’s baseball league and pulls in viewers thanks to lovable characters who dream of playing professionally.

“The show takes a deeper look at race and sexuality, following the journey of a whole new ensemble of characters as they carve their own paths towards the field, both in the league and outside of it,” according to Amazon. While the show will focus on entirely new characters who play for the Rockford Peaches, there have been rumors that OG actors may make an appearance (Rosie O’Donnell for sure).

The series is produced by Abbi Jacobson and Will Graham, and the new direction was very intentional. “[Mamie Johnson] was one of the first and only Black women to play in the male Negro leagues professionally,” Jacobson shared with Hollywood Reporter. “When Will and I started talking about the ways in which we wanted to do our version, that felt more real, nuanced and gritty and [a way to] incorporate more women’s stories.”

Emmy-winning actor Billy Porter is making his directorial debut with a film about a trans high school senior navigating friends, family, and new love.

Porter is best known for his work as Pray Tell on Pose and most recently as the fairy godmother in Amazon’s musical movie Cinderella. But he’s stepping behind the camera to put the spotlight on a “delightfully modern coming-of-age story” titled Anything’s Possible.

The official trailer shows trans senior Kelsa (Eva Reign), who is navigating her first boyfriend, Khal (Katy Keene actor Abubakr Ali), her family, and her final year of high school.

“When her classmate Khal gets a crush on her, he musters up the courage to ask her out, despite the drama he knows it could cause,” the trailer’s description reads. “What transpires is a romance that showcases the joy, tenderness, and pain of young love.”

“I ain’t Barbra Streisand yet,” Porter told Variety. “It’s like, let me do one thing at a time. Let me direct something first. Then I’ll direct something and be in it, too.”

He continued: “This is an aspirational story. It’s almost like a fairytale,” Porter says. “We know that. It’s a look at what we can be. That’s what we as artists get to do—look at what we can be and what we should be.”

For her part, the actress shared information about the film on Instagram, writing “Hey y’all, meet Kelsa. Check out these first-look images from #AnythingsPossible, the movie I’m starring in. I am so honored to help tell this story. There’s so much to say, but for now, I’ll just reiterate how excited I am for you all to see this beautiful story unfold!”

Talking with Them earlier this year, Reign said of the film, “It’s ironic: The movie’s called Anything’s Possible, but I didn’t believe it. My whole life, I’d wanted to be an actress, but even after I got that call I was telling myself, ‘I’m a Black trans girl—I’m not going to be the lead in a movie. That’s not feasible. I’ll be lucky to play someone’s friend.’”

Anything’s Possible will be available on Prime Video on July 22.

The ladies of Nonnatus House are returning! Call the Midwife, the beloved BBC series that follows a colorful cast of nuns and nurse assistants delivering babies all over East London, has begun filming its 12th season.

The announcement is welcome news for Midwife fans, who watched season 11 end with many a cliffhanger (no spoilers here!). The show, which has been wowing watchers since 2012, will also return for a 13th season at minimum.

Creator, writer and executive producer Heidi Thomas shares: “It’s an incredible privilege to be able to look back on a decade of Call the Midwife, and yet know that our journey is still very far from over. We are thrilled to be going on for a few more years!

For anyone who hasn’t caught the midwife bug, the show is based on Jennifer Worth’s memoir, which recounts her time as a nurse in the 1950s in post-war East London. She describes her time in Poplar working as a midwife and district nurse, attached to a convent by the name of Nonnatus House. The show closely resembles the memoir in its early seasons, and while it has departed from the original storyline 11 seasons in, it stays true to many historical details.

While we wait for season 12 to drop, there are plenty of ways to catch up on your favorite nuns in the meantime. You can stream seasons one through 10 on Netflix, watch the entire series on PBS and purchase the series on Amazon Prime Video.

Plus, your holidays will be even merrier: The gals will also be a part of Christmas special. Additionally, fans will see the return of Nurse Trixie (Helen George) for the holiday special and all of season 12. George had previously been on hiatus to have her second child.

There is no official debut date, but season 12 will consist of eight, hour-long episodes like seasons past. 2023 is already looking good!
