Thanksgiving feasts can still be (relatively) cheap! If you’re trying to save money around the holidays this year, you might be alarmed by the news of food inflation and scarcity. Fortunately according to Consumer Reports, there are plenty of ways to conserve cash while you shop for the big day.

As it turns out, your standard Thanksgiving food items are actually cheaper this year than the previous two years. You can get a basket of root vegetables and name brand items (like Ocean Spray cranberry sauce or Pillsbury pie crusts) for $22.31, down 36 cents from 2020. And the prices of big turkeys (16 pounds and up) have dropped around nine percent, making it an economical choice and a great source of leftovers.

funny jokes for kids, holiday jokes for kids, thanksgiving jokes.

Other tips to save money? Check your store for promotions around the holiday, but don’t get tricked into spending over budget just to snag a cheaper turkey. Buy in advance rather than getting caught in the crowds and to take advantage of “while supplies last” deals. And don’t feel the need to spend a lot on pricey appetizers, since the Thanksgiving meal is known to be super filling on its own.

As you’re shopping for holiday meals in general, it pays to get a store loyalty card, which often offer gas deals, too. You can take advantage of tech in the aisles by using a Consumer Reports recommended shopping app, like Basket, Ibotta or Flipp, which help you shop for the best savings. Finally, store brands tend to be 20 to 25% cheaper than their name brand counterparts and often taste nearly identical.

We love a quirky Airbnb, from treehouses to lighthouses. Now there’s a new list of “the most popular weird Airbnbs” and it features some gems close to home and abroad. Our favorite might be the giant seashell in Mexico!

U.K. site Confused.com put together this list and the top pick is the Bubble Suite. The domes are located in Mexico’s wine country and get an average of 4.8 stars. At $215 a night, they’re not exactly cheap, but they’re perfect for a kid-free getaway or celebration.

If you’d rather hit up Hawaii, check out the Dreamy Tropical Treehouse. It’s an adult-sized treehouse featuring panoramic views of a tropical jungle. It only sleeps two people for $300 a night, but it’s still a steal by Hawaii standards. Enjoy being totally off the grid!

Finally, don’t forget that giant seashell. Head back to Mexico and Isla Mujeres to rent The Seashell House, aptly situated near the beach. It’s $299 a night and it’s big enough to bring the whole family, plus it offers a private pool!

There are plenty of other gems on this list, including a private island in Belize, a super cheap recycled hideaway in Brazil and the Cube House in the middle of the Netherlands. Which one will you pick to add to your travel bucket list?

Time for an ALDI Run: Unicorn Cones Are Coming

What’s the Dill? ALDI’s Dill Pickle Popcorn, That’s What

Photo: Karissa Whitman

I was four months postpartum. I was struggling with nursing my son, but we had a wedding we had already committed to going to. I was so nervous because I was worried I’d lose my breastmilk supply for not nursing for so long. I spent the entire day packing myself a little bag full of my supplies. My breast pump, bottles, an icepack inside an insulated cooler for my milk, my nipple cream, etc…I was packed and ready.

I needed to run to the bathroom real quick and figured “Hey, why not rely on my sweet reliable awesome husband to put my bags in the car?” You know, I trusted him so much I didn’t even think to check all the bags made it into the trunk.

About 25 minutes into our drive, I told my husband I’d probably have to pump upon arriving and once again before the reception starts. His response, “Well, did you bring your pump?” I looked at him and said, “Well duh, you packed the bags in the car, right?” Nope. He only grabbed one bag. My purse. Which, thanks hunny, I did need that. But I really needed the pump more.

At this point, the panic started to set in. This was our first long outing without my son. It was about 50 miles away from home. And already late at night. Once I calmed down, I figured I could just run to a local Target or Walmart and pick up a little cheap hand pump. Well get this, we get to Target, run in, and they were sold out of hand pumps. The next best thing was a $100 electric pump.

At this rate, I was thinking I could just grab some bottles, a little cooler and manually express myself. We were now running about 15 minutes late to this wedding we had already driven so far to get to and decided that would be the plan. During the first “manual” pump, I sat in the car all by myself with my husband’s shirts hanging on the windows for some privacy. I was trying so hard to express anything but just kept getting a drop, drop, drop. I never even had a letdown, yet my breasts felt so full and engorged by this rate.

I sat in the car and shed a few tears, I mean come on, can ya blame a girl with breasts full of milk who is pumpless and it’s the first long outing away from her baby? Talk about the worst-case scenario. I tried going back inside and running some paper towels under warm water to try and warm compress, but that didn’t work either.

Looking back I think I was so stressed it definitely played into my ability to have a letdown. Also looking back, I will never let my husband pack my pump again, well I probably will, but that trust is hard to regain. I mean, lesson truly learned. By the time we got home that night (and yes, we ended up leaving early), I was able to nurse my son and relieve all the pain and pressure from the milk.

So new mama, my tip to you? Take a moment to double-check that you’ve packed your breast pump and that it’s also in the car.

Many of us rang in 2020 with high expectations and exciting resolutions. Little did we know a global pandemic was on its way. COVID-19 changed how most Portland families lived their daily lives. Everything from Portland schools to all the many Portland kid activities and events shut down. But, because we are an innovative community, Portland parents pivoted and found new ways to make daily life awesome for their kiddos. With a vaccine being distributed and 2021 on it’s way, there’s hope that some of our favorite family-friendly Portland activities and businesses will reopen. The following are just some of the things we are looking forward to in 2021!

Warren County CVB via flickr

Going to the movies

While families have been able to stream entertainment at home, there's nothing quite like taking the kids out to the theater. There are several Portland movie theaters that cater specifically to families with kids. They offer special movie times and awesome snacks too!

Being in Awe at OMSI

Where can we even begin? OMSI is one of our favorite spots for Portland families and kids to explore. We can't wait to get our science on with OMSI's awesome featured exhibits, hands-on experiences and fantastical theater. 2021 can't get here fast enough.

Exploring at the Portland Children's Museum

Oh how we miss the Portland Children's Museum. We can't wait until Portland kids can once again spend hours exploring our world through hands-on play at this amazing museum created just for little ones. It also offers parties for little ones and camps! We are counting the days...

Getting Wet & Wings and Waves Waterpark

Summer, fall, winter or spring; Wings and Waves Water Park is the perfect place to let the kids splash and play. We miss shooting down the slides and splashing in the vortex pool. Then there's the attached Aviation and Space Museum offering hours and hours of galactic discovery. This Portland family activity and attraction is one of our very favorites.!

Hitting Pins

There's nothing quite like the sound of bowling a strike at one of Portland's local bowling alley's. And our local bowling alleys are as cool as Portland is weird. For kids who don't want to bowl, many of them have arcades and next level nibbles for hungry competitors. We can't wait to get back to gathering together to avoid the gutters while listing to groovy music, playing, dining and drinking together. You can find our favorite bowling alley's here.

Getting Our Game On

Speaking of playing, we can't wait to hit the arcades again! Portland arcades are truly awesome. In fact, there are even a couple nickle arcades that make letting your kids play for hours pretty darn cheap. You can prop up and munch on snack while your little ones go wild playing pin ball, Donkey Kong, or whatever it is that the kids are playing these days!

Festivals, Festivals & More Festivals

Portand is one of the most festive places on earth. We bring the family-friendly music and events like nowhere else and we simply can't wait to get back to celebrating anything and everything we can find to celebrate with festivals. There are festivals that celebrate flowers and festivals that celebrate balloons. Portland has festivals that celebrate seasons and people who turn giant pumpkins into canoes. We even have a host of parades that celebrate things like mermaids!

Eating Out Inside

Eating out has been nearly impossible since COVID hit unless you are eating outside. While we love the outdoors, we aren't going to lie...we miss eating inside when we are eating out! Portland is packed with amazing family-friendly restaurants and we want to get back to gobbling down their offerings while our kids play and eat at the same time. From pizza to burgers to veggie spots and more, we are excited about going out to eat at Portland restaurants again!

Sending Kids to Classes & Camps

Portland parents love their kids. They really, really do. But man! We can't wait to send them off to camps and classes again. Dance classes, summer camps, art classes, science camps...we love them all, and so do our kids! We are counting the days until our little artists and dancers and scientists can head out with their peers while we sit in sweet, oh-so-sweet silence all by our lonesome again.

Oaks Park via Yelp

Playing at Oaks Park

This amusement park has been in operation for over a hundred years. A whole year without the wonderland that is Oaks Park is enough. We can't wait to get back to enjoying the rides, racing across the roller rink, playing mini golf and more. We can't wait for Oaks Park to open up again in 2021!

Dancing at Concerts

Portland has always been a musical town. And our local musicians love kids. From concerts in the park to musicians at local stores and restaurants we can't wait until we can move and groove to their family friendly tunes again.

Going on Train Rides

2020 was full of road trips, but what we just can't wait to do in 2021 is hop on a nearby train. We miss seasonal trips through the wood and watching nature pass by while riding the rails. When things open up again, you'll want to check out these awesome train rides.

Going for the classic canned cranberry sauce this year? Kick your tradition up a notch with a perfectly festive and super easy twist: just slice the cranberry sauce as usual and then use small cookie cutters to cut out shapes. Stars, hearts, holiday trees or even little people can all become part of the meal. This is a great idea for the kid’s table, too. Serve on a pretty platter and bam! You've got whimsy on a dish (and a dime).

Classic Cranberry Garland

String the fun along with a simple popcorn and cranberry garland that can be draped over a centerpiece or used as decor along a wall, mantel or on your holiday tree. You can even use it for outdoor decoration/snack for the birdies. For the easy how-to click here. We love the idea of subbing Cheerios for popcorn, which can be easier for little chubby fingers to string.
