It happens so fast. You wake up to your phone, earbuds, tablet, whatever, fully charged. 100%. And, since technology has come so far, it stands to reason that even if you’re an active user, it’ll stay charged, or at least, charged enough, until the end of the day. Or at minimum, until dinner. Maayyyyybe faster on vacation (Spring Break is coming up, afterall), but still. Except for the days when it doesn’t. Enter: a serious need for portable phone chargers.

Letting your kids play games on your phone while you drive 20 minutes out of the way to the one Whole Foods that always has the Sonoma Chicken Salad (maybe we’re having a craving at the moment, but you get our point). The days when you have soccer practice to daycare pickup to a late Zoom meeting to a dance recital barely give you enough time to catch your breath, much less charge your phone. Family vacations when it’s camera-critical. And, of course, when your little ones are particularly cranky and will only calm down if that one aquarium video with the lo-fi music plays on a loop. All of that drains your batteries (physically and mentally, we know). Don’t get stuck without a full backup power source with these pretty darn cute portable phone chargers. Hey, you need all that juice to share those day-to-day (even the ultra-busy ones) pictures to your Tinybeans app, right?

Start your family band by crafting some awesome homemade instruments. Most of these are super easy to make, and kids will have a blast banging on a tin can drum, shaking DIY maracas, and making some tunes. Looking for other creative projects for kids? Check out our collection of crafts for toddlers, classic paper crafts for kids, and things kids can make with toilet paper rolls.

Why Are Homemade Instruments Important?

Making and playing homemade instruments allows kids to use not only their artistic creativity but their musical creativity as well. In addition, according to the Ethnomusicology Review, “When fully engaged in musical invention, children can develop their naturally imaginative and participatory approach to learning.”

Rubber bands stretched around a loaf pan will produce a similar effect.

We know it’s so easy to get wrapped up in the day-to-day grind, and we’re right there with you. But we’ve also noticed that life moves a lot more smoothly when we feel especially connected with our partners. Problems get solved faster, stress is reduced, and that feeling of being supported just can’t be beat. And you know what? You’re both due for one of those little romantic getaways where PDA is highly encouraged (public and private displays of affection, that is), chicken nuggets aren’t on the menu, and remembering why you love each other is almost guaranteed. These romantic Airbnbs are just the place to do it.

Below are some of our favorite leave-the-kids-at-home-for-this-trip destinations around the U.S. Beaches, forests, cottages, and mansions are all included in these romantic getaways. You and your honey can start reconnecting just by picking one together (and isn’t that part of the fun?). Now, you two love birds, pick your pleasure (wink) and get ready for some well-deserved alone time.

Birthday Party Ideas Little Kids Will Love

A Unicorn Party

Unicorns are always a popular birthday party idea for kids, but in 2024, with Thelma the Unicorn heading to Netflix, we think they’ll be even bigger. Get some ethereal inspiration from San Diego’s Starry Eyed Events’ gorgeous Elegant Pastel Unicorn Soiree gallery (because, you know, unicorns don’t do parties. They do soirees).

Want to keep young unicorn lovers busy? Try this DIY unicorn horn headband that is an absolute must for your little guests.

Messy Parties

Ditch the nice clothes and let your kids get messy! Our original messy art party uses squirt guns, mega-canvases, shaving cream, and paint-filled eggs to get kids' creative juices flowing. You can also throw a slime party (check out our favorite videos on making slime here), a DIY craft party or a mad scientist party complete with a potion-making station.

Sleep-Under

Parents treat their children to a colorful evening birthday celebration
iStock

Instead of a sleepover, why not a sleep-under? Perfect for younger kids or kids who aren't ready to make the jump to a whole night, invite friends over around dinner time, and plan fun "nighttime" activities like karaoke, a dance party, glow-in-the-dark games, outdoor games you can play in the dark or even crafts.

Sonic the Hedgehog Birthday Party

Does your little gamer love Sonic? Turns out, a lot of other people’s kiddos dig the feisty blue hedgehog, too. Since Sonic 3 hits theaters in 2024, we’re betting this kids’ birthday party idea will be everywhere this year. Find a plethora of Sonic birthday party supplies on Amazon.

Super Mario Bros. Party Theme

A picture of a super mario themed party, a good kids birthday party idea
Kara's Party Ideas

The new Super Mario Bros. movie is now streaming, and kids love it just as much as when it was in theaters. Since the classic Nintendo game never goes out of style, we think this birthday party idea will be even more popular in 2024. Get inspired with tons of ideas over at Kara's Party Ideas.

Spa Party

iStock

Who wouldn't want to celebrate their birthday with a full spa treatment? Drop cucumber slices in water, offer cozy robes and slippers, and twirl their hair up in a towel for a day of pampering that includes manicures, pedicures, and facial masks.

Star Wars Birthday Party

DIY lightsabers, a droid-decorating station, and a Death Star piñata from Spaceships and Laser Beams.
Sweet Pea Parties

The Star Wars franchise may be decades old, but the force is still going strong thanks to The Mandalorian, Andor, Ashoka, and the Star Wars attractions at Disney parks. Young Jedi will love this party plan that includes DIY lightsabers, a droid-decorating station, and a Death Star piñata from Spaceships and Laser Beams.

Want something female-centric for your budding Rey? This Millennium Falcon party from Kara's Party Ideas will get your little girls ready for action.

Birthday Party Themes Big Kids Will Love

Taylor Swift Birthday Party

Gather round, swifties! Between her sold-out Eras tour and being Time’s Person of the Year, Taylor is hotter than ever. Expect her fans to want to celebrate with friendship bracelets, her songs on shuffle, and a lip sync contest.

Active Parties

Booking time at a ropes course, zipline, rock-climbing venue, trampoline park, or laser tag arena is a kids’ birthday party idea that’ll still be strong in 2024.  While most of these courses tend to be for children ages 8 and up, it can sometimes depend on kids’ comfort levels. It’s always good to let parents know in advance, usually a necessity because waivers need to be signed and grownups need to have some kind of activity alternative for kids who decide against it at the last minute (including the birthday kid) like a simple art or hands-on craft. Most places will have a party room for rent.

Video Game Truck Parties

a video game truck is a popular birthday party idea
iStock

If you have a game-obsessed kiddo at home, consider renting a video game truck to show up for a few hours. This birthday party idea has been popping up more in the last year or so, and we expect it to be even bigger this year.

Movie Theater Party

iStock

With so many new family movies coming in 2024, a fun kids' birthday party idea we think will be extra popular is a movie theater party! Either look into options for renting out a theater or opt to purchase a row of seats for your kid and their friends.

Glamping Parties

a fun birthday party idea for 2023 is at-home glamping

Okay, so maybe your child loves a good indoor fort or tent, but the Great Outdoors isn't an option for a party venue. A fun birthday party idea for 2024 is an at-home glamping party! Arrange for a glamping scavenger hunt, a hot dog charcuterie board, plenty of ingredients for s'mores, and even kid-friendly ghost stories

President’s Day is a National Holiday that celebrates both George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. The official day is celebrated on the third Monday of February. From where he was born to how much education he had, read on for a few more fun facts about George Washington.

1. He was born on Feb. 22, 1732, at Pope’s Creek, Virginia

2. His family arrived in America in 1657 on a ship called the Sea Horse of London.

3. He was an excellent dancer.

4. He did throw a silver dollar across the Potomac River. The Potomac is over a mile wide, and silver dollars did not exist then. His grandson once said that George threw a piece of slate across the Rappahannock River in Fredericksburg, which is narrower.

5. He had no middle name.

6. The cherry tree story is just that: a story. The tale is that as a little boy, Washington chopped down a cherry tree in his family’s yard and told his father the truth even though it meant punishment. This story was fabricated by Mason Locke Weems, a bookseller who wrote the first biography about Washington (after George died in 1799).

7. George Washington had bad teeth and was afflicted with many dental diseases and pain, but his teeth weren’t wooden.

8. Washington’s white hair was not a wig, although he did powder his hair for the white appearance. Click here for a tutorial on how to rock the style.

9. He only had a grade-school level education.

10. George Washington never had any biological children.

11. A fun fact about George Washington is that he was the United States’ first mule breeder.

12. He was the first person to sign the Constitution of the United States of America.

13. His signature hairstyle was real hair. It looked white because he powdered it.

Time to learn what “Bruh, you left no crumbs on the field” means

When it comes to middle school slang, the first thing that comes to mind is Timothée Chalamet’s hilarious skit on SNL. And while kids today aren’t exactly that bad, some of the phrases they’re using are… confusing, to say the least. In a TikTok video, Mr. Lindsay, a middle school SPED teacher, shares all the words he’s heard in just one week. Though you’ve probably heard a few of them, most are going to require translation.

After all, as Mr. Lindsay points out, “If we don’t know what they’re saying, how do we know if they’re being inappropriate or not?” From “riz” to “left no crumbs,” here’s a breakdown of common middle school slang words parents should know. (Note: A number of these terms have been adopted from African-American Vernacular English.)

On God: A way of saying someone is telling the truth, a version of “I swear to God.”

She ate: Describing someone who looked amazing or did something perfectly.

Left no crumbs: A shortened version of “ate and left no crumbs,” meaning someone did something so well they took all the talent or skills for themselves and left none for anyone else.

Riz: Romantic appeal or charm/charisma. Being a smooth talker, having that “something special,” willing to put oneself out there.

GYAT: A shortened version of Godd*&*, typically used when referring to someone with a curvy backside. You might even hear something like “level 1 GYAT” or “level 10 GYAT.”

Fanum Tax: This word originated with a Twitch streamer who would jokingly eat parts of his friend’s meals. According to this YouTube video, Fanum himself claims it means “feed your friends.”

Cap: Lying for no reason. “Bruh, why you capping? I know you’re grounded from your phone.”

Bet: Kids use this term for a few different meanings, but the most common use is as “okay” or “agreed.” It also is a way of confirming a true statement.

Bruh: While this term stems from the word “brother” or “bro,” nowadays, it can be used for just about anything: to say hello, to convey disappointment, excitement, boredom, or whatever.

Gassing you up: To inflate a person’s ego, give them props and compliments, or lift them up when they feel down.

It’s giving: This is used to convey a similarity to a person or thing or even an era. For example, “Her outfit is giving ’90s.” It can also be shortened to convey a positive vibe. “It’s giving,” meaning you like it.

For real for real: Used to emphasize complete honesty. “For real for real, I aced that test.”

This goes dummy hard: A term often heard on TikTok that’s used to express admiration for something or someone exceptionally awesome. If you hear your kid say, “He went dummy hard on the field,” it means the player had a fantastic game.

Simping: From the word “simp, which has been shortened from “simpleton.” It refers to a boy who is so into a girl they can’t do anything but think about them. Someone who is “simping” on someone else will do almost anything for that person. For example, Kid A says, “I can’t wait to leave class, find Annie, and see what she’s doing.” Kid B says, “You’re simping,’ bro.” Usually has a negative connotation.

You’re not him: You aren’t that guy, and you’ll never be that guy.

Yeet: To throw something fast and hard, preferably screaming “Yeet” while doing so. It’s typically used when throwing something forcefully that you don’t care about.

Snatched: Popularized by the LGBTQ+ community, it takes the place of “perfection” or “on point.” For example: Your makeup is snatched.

Pick-me energy: Comes from the term “pick-me girl,” a person who does almost anything for male validation, including changing styles, interests, and hobbies to be accepted. It has turned into an insult, not unlike “simp,” and is almost always used negatively.

Slay: First popularized among the Black LBGTQ+ communities in the ’80s and ’90s, this term describes incredible fashion, music, and dance performances; it has expanded to mean “amazing job” for almost anything, similar to the term “killed it.” “Yes, girl, slay!”

Dead a**: A Gen Z and Gen Alpha way of saying “in all seriousness.”

Drippy: Used to express something cool or awesome, especially regarding fashion and clothes. It can be used to emphasize that a person has so much swag.

Bussin: Something is delicious. “My mom’s chicken casserole is so bussin.”

Safe to say, middle school slang has changed drastically from when we were roaming the halls. But hey, now that you’re more familiar with these terms, you might be able to work them into conversation with your big kid. Whether that makes you cool or a total dork remains to be seen.

Brrr! Baby, it’s cold outside. But have no fear. Even when the weather’s chilly and you’re snowed in, there’s lots that you and your little one can do to fight cabin fever and explore the winter wonderland. Here you’ll find nine of our favorite snow day activities for babies and young toddlers.

1. Indoor Beach Day

It’s too cold outside for swimwear, but that doesn’t mean you can’t go swimming. Try a mid-day bath to break up tired routines. Most babies adore water play anytime. Throw in a few plastic cups and floating ducks and you have the makings of your own beach party.

2. Shadow Puppet Show

When it’s dark and dreary outside, lights shine even more brightly inside. Bust out the flashlights and shadow puppets and impress your little one with an oversized bunny hopping across the wall and the silly interpretive dance her teddy bear can do under the spotlight.

3. Sensory Play with Snow

Snow can be used in place of sand or play dough, at least until it melts. Scoop up a bunch and bring it inside. Then, set your little one up on towels, get out measuring cups and spoons, and watch your baby build, scoop, and explore the squishy, cold wonder. You can find eight more fun snow sensory play ideas here.

4. Play With Your Food

When you’re trapped inside, sometimes you need to throw the rules out the window. Plain yogurt with a little food coloring added in makes the perfect medium for finger painting. Edible play dough is also easy to mix up. Try this simple oatmeal dough or a brightly-colored mix with Kool-Aid.

5. Go Sledding

They may not be ready to careen down hills, but little ones sitting up independently can chill in a sled, like this one, and enjoy the snow. Bundle up your babe and play Rudolph by pulling them around with a rope. Bonus: you get to battle cabin fever with a little exercise.

6. Snow is Your Canvas

Take a cue from childhood fave The Snow Day and head outside to make tracks in the fresh, pristine snow. Pull on snow boots and stomp around. Budding walkers love to follow a trail or build a new one. Then, make patterns in the snow by drawing lines with a stick.

7. Bubbles

Blow a few bubbles inside for instant baby-mesmerizing magic. Then, if you’re willing to brave the chilly weather, go outside and make your own frozen bubbles. The temperature needs to be 10 degrees Fahrenheit or below for the trick to work. If that’s too cold for you, create semi-solid creations indoors by carefully freezing soap bubbles on a plate in your own freezer.

8. Paint Some Snow

Sometimes the best canvas for a young toddler is a frosty one. Bundle up your little Picasso to sit in the snow outside or fill a bin with snow for some indoor artistry. Now fill a few bowls with water and a few drops of a different food color in each to create the “paint.” Give your baby or toddler a paintbrush and let them craft a melty masterpiece. Bonus: No worries if they taste the paints.

9. Dance Party

If all else fails, turn up the tunes and boogie!

Grand Palladium White Sand Resort & Spa | Riviera Maya

Grand Palladium is, through and through, the classic type of all-inclusive resort for families you imagine visiting in Mexico. But while other brands may have gotten too big or crowded, with the quality of food and service inevitably decreasing, these guys do it right. White Sand is one of four resorts on their Riviera Maya compound (sister resorts “Colonial” and “Kantenah” are also family-friendly, whereas the fourth, TRS Yucatan Hotel, is adults-only), which allows guests the unique opportunity of having both an intimate resort feel while being able to access the amenities (restaurants, pools, and more) of the neighboring resorts. If your kids (or spouse!) tend to get bored in one place quickly, this is the perfect answer.

Kids will love the interesting animals they encounter, whether real (there is a large flock of flamingos that live on the property, as well as plenty of cute coatis, iguanas, and more) or “Raggs” (the resort mascots, colorful dog characters that entertain children throughout the resort by singing, dancing, reading stories, and posing for photos)

The Fairmont Mayakoba underwent a serious makeover that was completed in 2022 and it now has a sleek new beach club, two more restaurants, an adults-only bar overlooking the ocean, two beautiful kids clubs, and freshly redesigned rooms and suites, too. Fairmont Mayakoba is hidden in 240 acres of tropical forest, marked by crystal clear waterways and cobbled roads suitable only for walking, bikes, and golf carts. The setting in nature makes it hard to believe you’re only 40 minutes south of Cancún. It feels remote, exclusive, and quiet in the ways you want it to be quiet when you’re on vacation.

Golf carts are the main mode of transportation around Fairmont Mayakoba, which made for lots of fun, and also made you appreciate the grandness of the property. It truly feels like neverending miles of jungle tucked away alongside the Caribbean Ocean. It’s a 3-5 minute ride from the main rooms of the hotel to the beach, which makes even the journey to the beach an adventure.

The beach is great for walking or frolicking in the waves and is not too far from the pool, the beach bars, and restaurants. The rooms are on the side of the resort closest to the beach, and the waterpark is on the other side. It’s easy to get around the resort with shuttles and golf carts driven by staff and running continuously all day. If you are not experiencing mobility challenges, it’s about a 5-minute walk from the rooms to the waterpark once you’ve familiarized yourself with the layout of the property.

Margaritaville Beach Resort | Playa Flamingo, Costa Rica

A short drive from Playa Conchal, you’ll find Playa Flamingo, a golden sand beach with stunning sunsets. Whether you are going for a wedding or a family trip, Margarita Beach Resort goes all out. With daily beach and resort activities and many excursions for you to explore, you won’t have trouble staying busy (if that’s your jam). Their family suites have the family in mind, offering kids their own bunk bed and space, even in a shared room. The beach is excellent for long walks. Since Flaming Beach is along Brasilito Bay, the waters tend to be calmer than many other beaches in Costa Rica.

Do you, like me, seem to run on anxiety, caffeine, and your children’s leftovers? Are you perpetually in a rush and pretty sure you’ve forgotten… something? (What was it?!) What if, and stay with me here, you were able to set aside that feeling of chaos and actually find joy?

Yes, it sounds cheesy. But don’t roll your eyes just yet. It’ll only take a few minutes a day. OK, so that sounds like a late-night infomercial (remember those?), but it’s true. While you can’t move to a commune and cultivate free-range sunflowers, you can take a few minutes to hit the pause button. Here are some easy ways to switch things up and make the whole family happier.

1. Have a whatever-makes-you-happy hour or a “yes day.”

One mom changed her life (yes, really) with what she calls a “whatever-makes-you-happy hour.” You know that ferocious hour sometime around dinner when kids turn feral? Rather than fighting it, this mom runs with it. For those 60 minutes, her kids do whatever they’d like, barring cruelty or serious danger, while she and her husband kid back with the adult beverages of their choice. This sounds daringly 1970s-ish, but it works. Her kids experience the joy of running wild. She has time to kick back. When it’s over, they come together and eat dinner as a calm, reconnected family (and clean up before bed).

Alternatively, try a “yes day.” We spend our lives telling our kids no. Why not spend a day, an afternoon, an hour, saying yes? Yes to board games or jump-rope competitions or ice cream for dinner or fairy wings in public. Check all the ground rules in this post (note: No danger allowed and set a budget!), then go forth and make some incredible memories together.

2. Make time to play.

You can waste your whole life on your phone, so set it down. Actually, stuff it in a drawer because it’ll inevitably go off. Everyone, including kids, now gets to spend an electronic-free hour doing . . . well, whatever they love other than electronics (remember books? They’re made of paper). Before dinner is a great time for this, so is the hour before bed. Hang from the ceiling if you want, but do what you love.

3. Remember that absence makes the heart grow fonder.

You’ll love your children even more if they aren’t around all the time. I promise. Prioritize alone time—for them and you. You could go the cheesy self-care route and take a bubble bath. You could craft. You could watch a TV show that isn’t geared toward five-year-olds. You could also go on a date, which I hear is something adults do from time to time. Reconnecting with your partner will help you find some sanity. Leave your phone in your bag while you’re at it!

4. Show some love.

Snuggle with your kids—science says it’s good for you. Hugging makes us happier, healthier, and less anxious, which is something your whole family deserves. After cuddling with the younger set (so long as they’re game), set your sights on your significant other. Sex therapist Vanessa Marin shares that a nightly makeout session that doesn’t lead to anything more is a pretty solid idea and may even prevent those in long-term relationships from becoming “touch-avoidant.” Sounds like a fun thing to try. I mean, a therapist recommended it.

5. Surprise and delight.

Life can be a real grind. While we can’t permanently decamp to a tropical paradise, we can break up the mind-numbing routine with moments of unexpected fun. No, you don’t have to go all manic pixie to do it: Give your kids dessert for dinner. Surprise them with a night of mini golf. Announce an impromptu movie night or declare a pajama day.

6. Un-schedule from time to time.

No, you can’t drop everything, but you can pick and choose. You don’t have to do every single activity presented to you. Take a weekend off from planned fun. Part ways with that sport your kid doesn’t love. Skip the birthday party. There are so many demands on your time; prioritize a few and let the others go. After all, kids spend their lives hurrying up. Give them—and yourself—a chance to chill.

7. Dedicate 10 minutes a day to each kid.

The experts behind Big Little Feelings call it the “10-minute miracle.” No phones, no siblings, just dedicated parent-and-kid time with no correcting or criticizing. For those 10 minutes, go all in on whatever game/bonkers make-believe scenario/craft activity your kid wants. Doing so should help curtail acting out—after all, many kids get extra unruly when they’re in need of connection and attention. Spend a bit of time every day giving it to them.

8. Practice gratitude.

There are lots of ways to do this. You can sign up for volunteer opportunities, talk about the things you’re thankful for (on more than just Thanksgiving), make a good deed calendar—whatever works for your family. But make sure you insist on the importance of giving back to others and being grateful for what you’ve been given. Life can seem too big and too busy, so stop and count your blessings, then pass them on to someone else. It’s one of the most important things you can do for your kids.

9. Share the smallest moments for the biggest smiles.

Remember those family photo albums with the plastic sheets you’d peel apart to lay down your favorite printed pics? That ship has sailed. Now you can create the most amazing time capsule for your family on the Tinybeans App (your kids will thank you one day when they’ve stopped rolling their eyes) and share all of your sweetest and silliest moments with family and friends. They’ll delight in seeing that first waddle or goofy smile each time they get an alert, and you’ll get a solid dose of joy every time they comment or react.

10. Host an impromptu dance party.

Turn up that music and dance! Oh, and sing along. Toddlers will love it. Older kids might try to hide. Don’t let them. Instead, crank the volume louder. Dancing is good for you. So is joy. Give yourself room to feel it.

11. Always have something to look forward to.

Make sure there’s always something good on the way—a trip to the ice cream shop, a birthday party, a night with friends. This goes for your kid and you. Then when times get tough, there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel. We need this more than you’d think: If the slog seems endless, we’ll quit. But with our eyes on the prize, we’re all. gonna. make. it.
