Open through Mother’s Day, the Flower Fields are fun for the whole family

Need an instant mood booster? Take your little “buds” to see the amazing colors of the ranunculus bloom at The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch. You’ll have a bushel of farm-related fun on a wagon ride through a sea of blossoms (on a clear day you can see the ocean from your wagon ride, which is pretty spectacular) and at the sweet pea maze and U-pick blueberry field. Read on to learn how to get the most flower power out of your visit and where to go for the best food and shopping near the Fields, which are open through Mother’s Day, May 14.

Kate Loweth

Blooming Flower Fields From March-May
The nearly fifty acres of Giant Tecolote Ranunculus flowers are the showstopper at The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch. They’re in bloom for approximately six to eight weeks each year so a visit during this annual burst of color is such a treat. Introducing your kiddos to nature’s official way of announcing the arrival of spring in Southern California can help them appreciate the beauty and bounty of Mother Earth. In addition to the ranunculus flower, roses, orchids, poinsettias, petunias, sunflowers, and petunias are planted in stages so there is never a shortage of blooming plants. Kids can run around the spacious garden checking out the fields of flowers, visit the artists’ gardens, and find their way through a living maze of sweet peas.

Insider’s Tip: Tickets are only available online so make sure you snag those before you head over. Wear close-toed, comfortable shoes to make it easy to walk on the dirt pathways, and be sure to check out the full event calendar for other happenings (ahem, sunset wine tastings!) going on throughout the season.

Wondrous Wagon Ride
Make sure you bring pocket money for an open-air wagon ride through The Flower Fields. The tractors will take you and the kiddos right through the gorgeous flowers. Rides are $4 for little ones (ages 3-10) and $8 for adults. This is truly the best way to experience the rainbow of blooms right in front of you and a view of the Pacific Ocean in the background. Tickets can be purchased after you enter The Flower Fields on a mobile device or with a credit card. Cash will not be accepted.

Insider’s Tip: Don’t leave without checking out the full-size American Flag created completely out of red, white, and blue petunias. It’s hidden from the main flowers, but worth the view.

Activities for Kids

"Eight Flags" Treasure Hunt
Boredom will not be a complaint when you take the kids to The Flower Fields. Aside from the thrill of a tractor ride, little explorers should make sure to pick up a copy of their Flower Fields passport when they enter the site. They will then embark on a "treasure hunt" to find eight flags hidden throughout the Field. At each flag is a stamp that goes into the passport.

Carlsbad Mining Company
The Flower Fields is also home to the Carlsbad Mining Company. Kids will love using the miner’s old method of sifting sand in water to find polished gemstones.

Butterfly Garden
Wander and wonder in the renovated garden celebrating the butterflies that help make flowers bloom. Be sure to get a photo on the colorful butterfly bench.

U-pick Blueberry Field
This year, the U-pick blueberry field is available. When open, you can purchase your 1-pint baskets for $8 each at the blueberry stand to enjoy the U-Pick experience.

Sea of Sunflowers
Escape in the 5-acre sea of sunflowers.  The test patch features all colors, shapes, and sizes. Some are as big as small moons and others over 12’ high! The best time to visit and see the sunflowers is mid-April.

The last stop of the day should be Santa’s Playground. Yes, we said Santa! Nestled in The Flower Fields is a playground that’s home to whimsical playhouses and gigantic mushrooms that were part of Santa’s Village in Lake Arrowhead years ago. Come see the dollhouse and crooked treehouse, and play on the structures to get those last-minute wiggles out.

Insider’s Tip: The Flower Fields is family-friendly with plenty of restrooms, picnic areas, and lots of free parking.

Where to Eat and Shop-In and Around the Flower Fields

There are plenty of food and drink options in and around The Flower Fields. If you’d like to stay within the fields you can start your day with a lavender latte from Rollin’ Beans Coffee Co. located right at the ranch and then enjoy lunch at The Pizza Trolley. The Pizza Trolley serves only the best authentic artisan pizzas and fresh salads. Everything is made from scratch on the trolley from dough to sauce. Close out your day with a cool treat from The Strawberry Shack which serves soft-serve ice cream, strawberry shortcake, and strawberry cannolis. Yum!

Or you can walk a short distance to the Carlsbad Premium Outlets where you’ll find lots of great places to eat and shop. We love Blaze Pizza, the perfect restaurant for families who have picky eaters and/or a variety of preferences. Each person orders their own inexpensive pie and can pick their own perfect toppings. There’s also a gluten-free pizza crust option.

Another family favorite is the 1940s-themed Ruby’s Diner. Kids will be captivated by the trains that move overhead and they’ll marvel at the airplane models hanging throughout the restaurant. Each young diner also receives a cardboard train or automobile they can assemble and decorate at the table.

After lunch or dinner, indulge in some retail therapy at The Disney Store Outlet, Carter’s, Baby Gap, Sketchers, Stride Rite, OshKosh B’gosh, and more.

Insider’s Tip: Carlsbad Premium Outlets offers stroller rentals and has clean bathrooms with changing tables.

Make the most of summer’s sunny days with everything from cloud dough and water play to DIY ice cream and splatter paint

Why does summer always seem to go by so fast? We can’t slow it down, but we can help you make sure it’s packed with fun and amazing memories with activities that take full advantage of the summer season. While you won’t find any indoor activities on this list (hint: you can find indoor play ideas here), what you will find is 21 summer activities for preschoolers that are so easy to do anyone can pull them off. Balloon tosses. making homemade ice cream, and plenty of water-filled activities are on our list. Your job? Squeezing them all in before the weather cools down.

1. Make Homemade Popsicles

An icy popsicle on a hot summer day is a snack everybody loves. Especially teething littles, who get soothing comfort along with their sweet treat. Make them at home as a family using these awesome recipes.

2. Break Out the Bubble Machine

Babies love bubbles like new moms love a full night of sleep! So turn on the bubble machine and watch your sweet babe try to catch those bubbles before they burst. Who knows, maybe they’ll get so worn out they’ll sleep better so you can sleep better.

3. Run Through Sprinklers

Nothing screams childhood like running through sprinklers in the summertime. Babies not walking yet will shriek with delight as you take them through the droplets.

4. Design a Masterpiece on Your Sidewalk

Get chalkin’ with some sidewalk art. It’s a great way to be creative outdoors, especially in the evenings. If you need inspiration, try these 15 fun chalk ideas that are sure to bring you and your mini-Matisse hours of fun. Younger babes will love to explore the chalk’s texture and bright colors.

5. Read a Book in the Shade

Being outside in the summer months doesn’t have to be about high-energy, sweaty activities. Slow it down with a children’s book under your favorite tree. Choose one of these kid classics or opt for one of baby’s faves. Either way you’re fostering a love of reading and spending time outdoors.

6. Go on a Picnic

Move meals outside by packing some easy snacks and a few toys in a diaper bag or wagon, and you’re ready for a no-fuss summer adventure with minimal clean-up.

7. Have a Water Balloon Toss

On a hot summer day, a water balloon toss is always a hit. Younger babies can touch and roll the squishy, colorful balloons, and toddlers will be all about throwing them.

8. Set Up a Sensory Station

Nothing engages preschoolers quite like a sensory bin filled with things to touch, smell, and see. Find recipes and ideas for cloud dough, sponge bombs, rainbow spaghetti and more in our sensory play guide

9. Visit a Farmers Market (or Plant a Garden at Home)

Here’s the upside of kids who wake up super early—you can be the first to arrive anywhere on the weekend. Farmers markets open early, so they’ll be ready for you and your sweet pea. If you want to avoid crowds, plant herbs or flowers and watch them grow with your kids at home. When it comes to summer activities for preschoolers, you can’t go wrong with this one.

10. Watch a Movie in the Backyard (or Living Room)

Skip the high-priced local cinema and cuddle up under the stars to watch your family’s favorite flicks. An outdoor theater is not hard to set up, and it’ll be a summer memory everyone cherishes. No yard? Find a blank wall in your home (or hang up a white sheet), and set up blankets and pillows on the floor to re-create the experience indoors.

11. Make Homemade Ice Cream or Gelato

Once you’ve perfected your popsicle recipe, move on to the creamier stuff. Making homemade ice cream or gelato is easier than it sounds; there’s a reason it makes out summer activities for preschoolers hit list. We found a kid-friendly recipe that shows how you can make it with just a Ziploc food-storage bag.

12. Visit a Petting Zoo

Summer is the perfect time to take advantage of local petting zoos, where kids can spend hours meeting and greeting their favorite furry animals.

13. Go to a Concert at the Park (or Dance to Laurie Berkner)

Check your neighborhood listings to see if there are concerts in nearby parks. If not, check out kid-favorite singer Laurie Berkner’s website for videos you can sing and dance along with.

14. Go Stargazing

Clear, mild summer nights are ideal for gazing at the stars. Here are handy tips on how to have a stargazing adventure that your toddler will be talking about for years to come. Download one of the many apps that tell you what you’re looking at.

15. Visit a Water Park (or Set Up an Epic Kiddie Pool at Home)

Water parks can offer hours of fun on a hot summer day. Choose a weekday, if you can, when they tend to be less crowded. You can also wow your kids with an epic kiddie pool at home (hint: it’s one of our favorite summer activities for preschoolers because it’s an easy win). Dress up a plastic or inflatable pool with a plastic kiddie slide and small chairs, adding bubble bath to the water, and tossing in plastic balls, bath toys, or pool noodles.

16. Host an Outdoor Tea Party

A royally fun way to move an indoor activity outside for the summer. Set up your tea party under a shady tree or in a kiddie pool for maximum fun. Drink chilled tea or water; the fun comes in nibbling on pastries and small sandwiches.

17. Fly a Kite

On the next windy day, go fly a kite. One of the easiest summer activities for preschoolers this one doesn’t take much prep. Simply, choose a smaller kite that kids can control. Once it’s up, let your child help hold the string to watch it soar and glide.

18. Paint Rocks

Painting outdoors is an easy way to let toddlers get messy without worrying about destroying the furniture. First, gather and clean some rocks, and then paint them. Finally, place them together in the yard for all to enjoy.

19. Splatter Paint

Summer is a great time for kids to take it outside. And that means their art projects too. Check out our guide to messy, fun outdoor art projects to get kids splatter painting on a massive canvas, making bubble art, and even using squirt guns to color a canvas.

20. Host a Family Bike Wash

Get your whole family outside to give your tricycles and bikes a good washing. Suds plus water always equals a good time, especially when the temps heat up.

21. Pitch a Tent in the Backyard (or Living Room)

Not ready to take the plunge into a full family camping excursion? Test the waters by pitching a tent outside to play in or sleep in. Your little one will feel all of the excitement and you’ll have none of the stress of realizing you forgot something your baby needs! No yard? Camp in the living room!

From only-in-San Diego events to nature galore, here are 100 reasons why San Diego is the best place for kids and families

Lucky for us, San Diego is one of the top vacation destinations in the nation. And while it may be the 2nd biggest city in the state, its laid-back lifestyle and easy-breezy attitude make it feel more like a beach town (with all the glorious bells and whistles of metropolitan hub like access to cultural events, world-class museums and food—let’s not forget the delicious food). From incredible parks that kids will love, and only-in-San-Diego bucket-worthy activities to hidden gems sprinkled around SoCal, we’ve rounded up the best 100 things to do in San Diego—whether you’re a local and are looking for some things to do or just visiting for a bit—this list will keep your calendar full and your memories stacked all year long.

1. With over 30 beaches dotting San Diego's gorgeous coastline, hitting the sand and surf tops our list of must-dos. With so many options, you can find a sandy stretch that's right for your crew. Our detailed beach guide highlights the best beaches for babies, toddlers and big kids, as well as where to go to learn how to catch a wave or putter around a tide pool.

2. Show your kiddos what life was like living on a floating city with a visit to the USS Midway Museum—the largest aircraft carrier in the world that you can tour. The self-guided audio tour, narrated by former sailors, offers a lot of history and drops loads of knowledge like the fact that over 200,000 sailors have worked there throughout the years. PS: Your budding pilot can earn Junior Pilot Wings—visit the information booth for more intel.

3. Take your little minifigs to LEGOLAND but before you go, be sure to read all of our must-know tips when visiting LEGOLAND like how to reserve 'n' ride to avoid lines or what it's like to spend the night at the LEGOLAND Hotel. And make sure to catch their newest attraction, The Ferrari Build and Race where your little Danica Patrick can design, build and race their own car.

4. Spend the day exploring the magnificent 1,200-acre urban cultural park, Balboa Park, hands down one of the best things our city has to offer its residents and guests. Our insider guide to Balboa Park has everything you need to know to make the most of your visit with kids, including hidden gems like the California Tower where you can climb a secret staircase and get one of the best views of the city, and how to reach Junior Ranger status by completing the Junior Ranger Scavenger Hunt.

5. Ride the historic Carousel at Seaport Village. Handcarved in 1895 and only four bucks a whirl, it's both affordable and iconic. When you’re done with the spin you can stroll along the bay, grab a pretzel and lemonade, then head out to watch kites flying in the air in the park near Seaport Village.

6. People from all around the world flock to the world-famous San Diego Zoo. The most popular exhibits are the panda bear family and the polar bear plunge. Both have long lines so hit these spots first or be prepared to wait. Also keep an eye out for the oldest resident of the zoo, a 100 year old Galapogos tortoise named Speed. And in the summer, you can rock and roar into the dark with Night Time Zoo experience where you can hang with the animals in the evening.

7. A trip to Cabrillo National Monument is another must-visit. It's where explorer Juan Rodriguez Carbrillo became the first European to set foot on the west coast in 1542. Ask for a free Cabrillo Journal newspaper at the Visitor Center. The back of the paper has a section with tasks for kids ages 3 and up—if they complete it, they'll become a Junior Ranger. Cabrillo also hosts plenty of workshops and camps devoted to youth interested in STEM activities.

8. This year, celebrate the 50th anniversary of the San Diego Zoo Safari Park with a visit to see white rhinos and roaming giraffes. In honor of their golden anniversary, the park is hosting a 90-minute tour of the Safari Park's Nairobi Village where you'll see iconic wildlife including gorillas and elephants as well as get a chance to go behind the scenes to areas not typically available to the public.

9. Unwind with a day of endless play at The New Children’s Museum, where all of the super-fun, interactive exhibits will entertain and educate kids. Did you know they also have a north county location in Del Mar? Remember, February is Museum Month in San Diego and all museums are half-price!

10. If your crew loves some healthy competition, this will get them jazzed up. Follow our list of San Diego's quirky landmarks (think the Crab Carillon Musical Bridge and an outrageous topiary garden) and see how many you can visit.

11. Go back in time to the 1850s with a visit to Old Town where kids can sit in a stagecoach, eat homemade tortillas, visit an old schoolhouse and learn some hands-on skills of the trades of yesteryear. It’s also where Father Junipero Serra established the first of California’s 21 missions in 1769, which also became the first permanent Spanish settlement in the region.

12. Descend into Sunny Jim Sea Cave, the only cave you can access by land on the California coastline. There are 144 stairs involved so come prepared to both descend and climb. Tours are about 15-20 minutes and are self-guided.

13. Get up close and personal with a dazzling array of sea creatures from sea horses and jellyfish to sharks and sting rays at Birch Aquarium. Also, if you have kids interested in learning what it's like to be a scientist, Birch Aquarium offers opportunities to interact with staff members, STEM events, summer camps and other outstanding resources.

14. Venture from San Diego to San Juan Capistrano or Solana Beach all the way to Disneyland on the train! The Coaster, The Trolly & The Sprinter all make for an adventurous day trip that train-loving kids will go loco for.

15. San Diego has more farms than any other county in the country and 92% of the farms are family-owned so it's easy to get outside, dig in some dirt, learn where your food comes from and meet and greet animals from camels to alpacas. For a real adventure, check out Oasis Camel Dairy where you can try some chocolate made from camel’s milk.

16. Expose your kiddos to the world of art without worrying about museum etiquette at one of these must-see outdoor art walks in San Diego. Queen Califia’s Magical Circle created by artist Niki de Saint Phalle at Kit Carson Park is a favorite. Her freestanding, whimsical sculptures (9 of them!) are sure to delight.

17. Can you tell the difference between a seal and a sea lion? Take a trip to La Jolla Sea Caves to see both and keep a lookout for external ear flaps. Sea Lions have them and seals don't. The caves are also a great place to go kayaking for families with kids 6 and up.

18. Bask in the gentle bay breeze and soak in the sounds at the Rady Shell Stadium. A stunning mix of the Sydney Opera House and the Hollywood Bowl, this outdoor venue tops the list of best outdoor music experiences in the world. Insider Tip: Some shows have rehearsals during the day that are completely free—bring your kiddos to one of these and enjoy the show.
