U-Cut Christmas Tree Farms in Connecticut
Sabia Tree Farm
Head to this charming and quaint farm nestled in Fairfield County for neatly lined rows of trees. A handsaw is available to borrow and staff will assist you with baling and securely tying the tree to your car. You can also buy a pin stand that is customized for your tree here. Bonus: Professional photographers are available for a photo session you can book. Visit the farm stand for fresh farmed eggs and handmade gifts from local vendors.
Weekend visits for both harvest-your-own trees and fresh-cut trees require a reservation. Come on a weekday when it's less busy and reservations are not required. Guests that plan to harvest their own tree should arrive no later than 4 p.m. Trees are sustainably grown and pruned every year during the eight-to-10-year period it takes to grow to full size, and every buyer of a cut-your-own tree gets a free commemorative Woodbury pewter ornament. The farm’s Barnyard Shop sells holiday treats and decor including wreaths, handmade crafts and tree stands, and an outdoor Holiday Courtyard Market offers open-air shopping. Payment is by cash or check only. U-cut trees are $92 on weekdays and $97 on weekends.
This farm has practiced sustainable farming for well over 200 years. Choose between spruce or fir by using their nifty online map. Did you know that fir and pine trees will hold their needles the longest over a spruce tree? Trees at Maple Farm are guaranteed so if you bring home one that loses a large amount of needles, return it to the Farm before Christmas for a replacement or a certificate for the following year. All trees are discounted $10 on weekdays. It’s generally less busy too. Cut your own trees on weekends are $118 and pre-cut trees start at $118. You will be provided with twine but will need to ask them to help you tie it to your car. You can also purchase wreaths and other holiday items. The weekend offers hayrides, refreshments and tailgating is allowed. Your whole family will have a great time!
Spend a fun day at this family-owned farm nestled in Warren County near the Delaware Water Gap. Not only do they grow award-winning trees, they've also provided trees to the White House. This is also the spot to get colorful Christmas trees, in hues like red, pink, purple, and blue. They have over 5,000 trees and several varieties to choose from. You can cut your own tree or pick a fresh-cut tree. Fresh-cut trees vary by type and size. Stop by the Christmas Barn for all your holiday decor needs.
This family-owned and operated farm in Middlesex County promises one of the most affordable cut-your-own Christmas tree options in the area. Staff is on hand to help you pick the right tree, providing saws, squaring off and shaping branches as well as netting and securing the tree to your car. Douglas and Fraser firs are the farm’s bestsellers. Experience the spirit of the season at this one-stop shop on the North Fork of Long Island. Santa's Christmas Tree Farm carries over 8,000 Douglas Fir trees to choose from with an average tree height between 6-7 feet tall. Field-cut trees are $90 while pre-cut Frasier firs start at $90. Santa's helpers will be around to provide you with a handsaw, as well as trim and tie your tree to your car. The farm offers a synthetic ice skating rink, a petting zoo, make-your-own s'mores, and a photo op with Santa on weekends. The farm is also known for its Christmas shop with ultra-festive displays and decorations. Sensory-friendly visits with Santa also take place here. Come for a tree and stay for the fun!
This small home-run lot has more than 4,000 trees and is one of Long Island’s most westerly Christmas Tree farms. Bring your own saw and you can take home one of their many tree varieties including firs, pines and spruces. (They also sell pre-cut trees and will cut one for you with your saw.) Set on a picturesque spot on a slight hill, the farm is low frills but gets super busy. Trees are reasonably priced based on the height and species you select. Call for reservations.
Tilden Lane Farm offers three types of spruce trees to cut yourself (a type good for holding the weight of lights and decorations) and two kinds of firs, which tend to last longer. Stock is extremely limited if you want to cut your own, so head there on Thanksgiving weekend for the best selection. The farm also offers fresh-cut Fraser fir trees. Hand saws are available or you can bring your own and staff can help with tree wrapping and securing to your vehicle. Trees are $80 and wreaths are $40. Don’t miss the farm-produced honey and you may be able to see some of the bees working on a warm day. Although there are no bathroom facilities on-site, you can make a lovely day of it in the nearby villages of Huntington or Northport by visiting some great restaurants and shops. They are open weekends starting Nov. 25 through Dec. 10.
It's a bit further afield in Mount Bethel, Pennsylvania, but people love this tree farm for its selection, service and extreme affordability. Beck's can loan you a saw, and tree bailing and drilling are free. More than 50,000 trees in innumerable shapes and sizes spread over 75 acres await the opportunity to become the centerpieces to your holiday season at Richardson Adventure Farm. Wagon rides to the fields are available daily. While you gorge on kettle corn, donuts, hot chocolate, and coffee, employees haul your find from the field and bale it in plastic netting. Note: When the farm planted six years ago, they didn't realize Fraser and Canaan Fir would be their most popular tree, and thus they don't have as many available this year. If you come later in the season, be prepared to choose from a wider selection, including White Pine, Concolor Fir, Douglas Fir, and Norway Spruce.
Can't wait to start trimming your tree? This non-profit tree farm just an hour outside Chicago has one of the earliest opening days in the area. Stomp through the dirt as you hunt for pine and spruce options, and score a free doughnut and hot chocolate with each tree purchase! And on select weekends in December, you can complete your trip with a private visit with Santa. If you prefer to get a Michigan pre-cut tree, you'll just need to make a free reservation in advance. Reservations are required for the first four weeks of the season.

Christmas Around the World & Holidays of Light at MSI
What began in 1942 as a single tree, is now an international winter wonderland at Christmas Around the World & Holidays of Light. Club Med Punta Cana is the brand’s flagship family property and you can see the focus on kids before you even arrive. Once your reservation is booked and paid in full, you can sign your kids up for the Mini Club program that offers a full-day kids club experience. Activities like crafts, tennis, archery, circus school, and so much more are included for ages 4 and up at Club Med. For kids under age 4, on-demand care is available for an additional fee. You can even get care for your kids during dinner hours so they can head off with their friends while you enjoy a quiet meal with your partner.
The property’s Mini Club facilities were quite impressive. There’s a zero-entry splash zone for cooling off when the temps creep up. Rooms for dining and activities along with playground equipment are also available. While we were on the property, we saw tons of kids participating in everything from water games to a pirate scavenger hunt!
Accommodations at Club Med Punta Cana
We stayed in the two-bedroom family room while at Club Med Punta Cana and it was very well-appointed for families of up to five people. There’s a parent room with a king-size bed and bathroom, along with a couch that can be arranged as a bed for a child if needed. A separate bedroom with two twin beds for the kids has plenty of storage area and a door that closes. There’s also a second bathroom in the hallway and a balcony. The family rooms are conveniently located in the middle of the property with easy access to Mini Club and the main restaurant, Hispaniola.
Club Med
If you have a baby coming along with you, the Club Med Baby Welcome Kit can be reserved in advance without additional cost and it comes with a baby bathtub, bottle warmer, changing table, umbrella bed, and stroller (this is also available at Michès).
In addition to the family accommodations, you can upgrade your stay to the Exclusive Collection space where you’ll have even more room to spread out. This part of the resort offers room service for breakfast, as well as a private pool and bar.
Head to the Zen Oasis when the kids are at Mini Club for some time in the adults-only pool. Accommodations are also available in this more secluded area of the property if you are traveling without little ones.
Dining at Club Med Punta Cana

Club Med Punta Cana has three restaurants available as part of the all-inclusive package. Hispaniola is your go-to spot for buffet dining which kids really love. Breakfast is our favorite with the omelette station taking top marks, but the dinner buffet with the chocolate fountain is a kid favorite. Hispaniola offers a gorgeous oceanfront view, was recently renovationed, and is open for all three meals.
For a la carte service with ocean views, Indigo is your spot. We especially enjoyed our dinner at Indigo with perfectly grilled meats and delicious sides. The Dominican offerings like the curry plate were also quite tasty. Samana Restaurant was closed for yearly maintenance during our stay but it offers a variety of cuisines including Caribbean, French, Italian, Asian, and more.
Things to Do at Club Med Punta Cana
If you want a full day of activities, Club Med Punta Cana is ready to provide. The Club Med app will lay out all the activities available for the day from organized beach volleyball games to power walking. There are different nightly performances and the Michael Jackson show was particularly fun.
Before you arrive, check out the themes for the nights you’ll be there. This ranges from white night to black/gold or floral. We were surprised how much the guests got into this while we were there! It’s not mandatory of course but most people would dress up in that night’s theme before they headed to dinner. It brings a festive vibe to the dining and nightly activities.
During the day, you can head to the beach for some time on the lounge chairs or watersports like snorkeling and sailing. Gear is available to check out but if your kids have their own goggles or floaties they like, you might want to bring them with you. We did find that the lobby shops were quite well stocked with anything we might have forgotten to bring with us.
Adults should definitely plan to spend some time at the onsite spa while you are there. Services like massages and facials are available for an additional cost but we think it’s definitely worth it for access to the gorgeous indoor/outdoor spa space. You can even book a couple’s massage with a view of the ocean.
Getting to Club Med Punta Cana
If you are looking for convenience, this is the spot for you. Fly into Punta Cana International Airport and then grab your shuttle to the resort. The property is located just a 20-minute drive from the airport so you don’t have a long van ride after your flight. Couldn’t be easier!
Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda is an oasis in the Dominican jungle and you’re going to want to check it out. A 1.5-hour shuttle ride will get you from the airport to this Exclusive Collection property and you’ll be impressed by your gorgeous surroundings from the minute you walk through the open-air lobby and are treated to a refreshing drink.
At Michès, you’ll find the service to be elevated from access to a pre-arrival concierge to the superior room amenities. All rooms have access to breakfast room services which is very convenient when traveling with kids.
Club Med Michès is focused on sustainability and they even have a water bottling facility on-site, eliminating the need for single-use plastic bottles. You will find glass bottles available in your room and they replace them as you use them throughout your stay. You can also find bottle-filling stations around the property.
Accommodations at Club Med Michès

Four villages make up the accommodations and you’ll find a different vibe in each. Explorer Cove is where we stayed and it had good access to the main area of the resort with pool, as well as the Mini Club and beach. Families will enjoy the Deluxe Family Room which has an adult room with a bathroom, a separate room with two twin beds for the kids, plus a second bathroom. Limited snacks and beverages are available in the in-room fridge and you’ll have a Nespresso machine as well.
Other areas of the property include Caribbean Paradise (a colorful area for families and couples), Zen Oasis (a relaxing area for everyone), and Archipelago (an adult-exclusive area with suites). No matter where you stay, adults have access to the Zen Pool (pictured above). Believe us when we say that you won’t want to leave this area once you’ve seen it! This gorgeous green pool has lots of spots for sunbathing or reading in the shade, as well as a swim-up bar where you can get fresh-made smoothies or cocktails as you like. Claim one of the hammocks and you’ll be in heaven.

Just like at the Punta Cana property, kids ages 4 and up have access to the Mini Club program at Michès with similar offerings like circus school, water play, crafts, theater, and more. Infants from 4 months and up can have booked care for an additional price. The splash pad in the Mini Club area is available to families even if you aren’t using Mini Club that day. The dump bucket was a huge hit as you can imagine!

The gourmet food offerings at Michès really shine and you can see that from the moment you wake up. Head over to the coffee shop where you can find hot and cold coffee drinks, frozen yogurt, pastries, and small sandwiches.
The buffet at Cayuco had pretty much everything you could want from fresh fruit to Asian bowls to fresh-made pancakes. Adults dining without their kids can enjoy their meals in the adults-only area if they wish. Don’t miss Club Med’s signature white chocolate bread while you are there! Be sure you check the schedule for nights when they offer the Secret Chocolate Room experience. The kids will go wild when they learn that they can have as much chocolate as they can fit on their plates.
Coco Plum focuses on local specialties with many different seafood options as well as non-meat options. Try the fish tacos while you enjoy the waves crashing nearby.
Coal & Copper is the resort’s steakhouse that welcomes guests for an additional fee. We had an amazing meal here and the staff was very attentive. The portions are massive so make sure you are hungry when you arrive!
Things to Do at Club Med Michès
Take advantage of all the activities offered at Club Med Michès as there really is something for everyone. The treetop palapa is a lovely venue for morning yoga before you head to the nearby Zen Pool. Tennis lessons, fitness classes, watersports, circus lessons, and so much more are on the agenda. The tough part—balancing the relaxing with all the activities.
Club Med Michès has an excellent spa that we got to visit during our stay. Enjoy your time before or after your treatment trying out the three plunge pools that go from refreshingly cold to hot. Any way you like to relax is available here.
Nighttime brings all sorts of performances like traditional Dominican dancers and circus acts. Be sure to check the Club Med app for the schedule for the day so you know what to expect.
Things to Know about Visiting Club Med in the Dominican Republic
You can arrange a day trip to Club Med Punta Cana from Michès if you want to check out the other property. Some people even split their visit between the two properties if they want a little variety.
The mosquitos come out at dusk in Michès. The resort provides bug spray and sprays the property as well but keep that in mind if you are sensitive.
Mini Club can book up so if you are sure you want to use it during your stay, book it as soon as you arrive at the resort or in advance if possible.
Many families bring strollers or foldable wagons with them. Floaties for the swimming pool are also allowed (and sold at the gift shop at both locations).
Club Med does a great job welcoming families, setting space aside for parents to relax without their kids, and bringing visitors together for shows and parties. It really is quite the fun all-inclusive family vacation!

What’s the History Behind Pumpkin Carvings and Jack-O’-Lanterns?
The tradition of carving pumpkins has origins in the Irish myth of Stingy Jack. People began carving faces in turnips to keep Jack’s (and other evil spirits) soul away, and when immigrants came to the United States, they started using pumpkins. Halloween is rooted in the Gaelic celebration of Samhain, which starts on Oct. 31 and ends on Nov. 1 and celebrates bringing in the harvests and ushering in the dark winter months. People would go from house to house in search of food and drink. They would also often carve makeshift lanterns out of potatoes and other root veggies, and as the years passed, several of these traditions blended to become what we now celebrate as Halloween.
How to Use a Pumpkin Carving Template
So, you’re ready to pick your pumpkin carving stencil and get to work. But, do you know the tips and tricks for carving a pumpkin? Contact your state elections office or just ask a friendly poll worker about rules and limitations on bringing your children along with you to the voting booth
Election Day is almost here and…well, maybe you have a preschooler, toddler, or newborn in tow. Now what? Um, go ahead and bring your kid with you to vote! Yep, that’s right. Take your pint-sized politician (in the future sense, of course) into the booth.
Many parents wonder if they’re legally allowed to bring their children with them into the voting booth. Even though this civic duty is a highly private one, the government allows minor children to accompany their voting parents in every state. That said, some states have their own laws setting maximum ages for kids who can come into the voting booth.
Don’t worry, your kindergarten kiddo can still go with you. States that do have age restrictions have set limits that are well into the teenage years. But keep in mind that each state has different rules, so ask questions and be prepared. In Virginia, for example, only children 15 years old and younger are allowed in the booths, according to NBC News. The same goes for Connecticut. But in California and other states, parents can bring along any minor under the age of 18.
If you’re not sure what the legal maximum age for a child accompanying a parent into a voting booth is, just ask. Call your state’s elections office before you go, or just ask the helpful friendly faces at your local polling place when you arrive. Go in knowing that every. single. state. in the country allows parents to bring their minor children into the voting booth with them, so if a poll worker turns you and your child away, remind them of their state’s laws not only dictating voting booth rules, but also voter suppression.
Along with age restrictions, some states also have total child maximums. Depending on your state, the law may limit the number of kids you bring into the booth to one or two. Again, always ask ahead of time. If you have three kids and your state only allows two, consider setting up an Election Day babysitting collective in your community or bring a friend with you to vote.
Okay, so what happens if your toddler throws a tantrum while you’re waiting in line to vote? Disrupting the voting process is a no-no. If your child’s not-so-pleasant behavior is impeding others from voting, distracting them, or causing problems for the other voters, polling place helpers could ask you to leave. Hey, you can go back to vote later on—after the babysitter comes.
So here’s the big question, “Why should you bring your kids with you to vote?” Taking your kids into the voting booth gives them a chance to see democracy in action and encourages them to think critically about what’s in the news. According to a study by the University of Chicago, nearly half of young people aged 15 to 25 get news at least once a week from family and friends via Twitter or Facebook. And it can be difficult to tell fact from fiction. One of the study’s conclusions is: “Youth must learn how to judge the credibility of online information and how to find divergent views on varied issues.”
There’s no reason to wait until they’re 18 (and of legal voting age) to start talking about their civic rights and responsibilities. Going into the voting booth with mom or dad makes our country’s political process concrete and tangible for them, helping your young child to better understand it.
