Several Gaming YouTubers have become global superstars in recent years
Like a lot of eight-year-olds, my daughter Alex loves video games. If given unfettered access, I imagine that she’d play video games for hours, if not days, pausing only for occasional snack and potty breaks. And like so many of her peers, in addition to playing, my kid also thoroughly enjoys watchingothers play video games. Whether it’s Roblox, Minecraft, or Mario Kart, watching other video gamers play IRL, via live-streaming platforms like Twitch or on video-sharing sites like YouTube, has become a preoccupation for her.
While the phenomenon of kids watching others play video games isn’t anything new, the trend of video gaming as a spectator sport has gained steam in recent years. Known as “Let’s Play” videos, this genre of video content (either live-streamed or pre-recorded) features video gamers sharing screens and commentary over gameplay, often with the addition of personal storytelling, humorous anecdotes, and lots of enthusiastic yelling and screaming (iykyk). What was once deemed a niche endeavor has grown into big business and turned some video-gaming content creators like PewDiePie, Markiplier, JuegaGerman, and DanTDM (to name just a few) into global superstars.
Today, Amazon-owned Twitch boasts more than 140 million monthly active users, and YouTube Gaming reported more than 40 million active gaming channels and 100 billion hours of watch time in 2020, the vertical’s biggest year since it launched.
Experts say kids’ interest in watching gaming YouTubers play is similar to watching any other sport. “The truth is, watching video games is not that much different from watching football games, poker, racing, golf, or some reality shows. Viewers learn a bit about the game, are entertained, and have something to share with like-minded friends,” said Dr. Randy Kulman, founder and president of LearningWorks for Kids.
For many parents, the practice of watching someone else play video games instead of playing the games yourself doesn’t make much sense. But for kids who have been raised on a steady diet of digital media and entertainment, watching others play video games can be both fun and educational.
“As humans, we have been playing since the beginning of time. Play is important for human well-being throughout our lifespan, and crucial to creativity and happiness. As a video game researcher, I was happily surprised to see this shift highlighting the positive uses and effects of games,” author and video gaming expert Dr. Rachel Kowert wrote in a blog post.
So what’s with the fascination of watching others play video games? Experts say there are many reasons why our kids enjoy watching others play video games, including:
There’s plenty to learn from others: Upskilling is a big reason why kids like watching others, especially seasoned gaming experts, play video games. By observing more skilled players, like gaming YouTubers, newbie gamers pick up tips and tricks that they can apply to their own gameplay.
Trying out new games: Some video games are expensive or are rated for older audiences, so watching others play games that are new or out of reach gives kids the opportunity to “test drive” a game before committing to making a purchase.
Building social connections: Viewing something together is inherently social, and watching others play video games on platforms like Twitch or YouTube lets kids connect with others who have shared interests and have the chance to discuss the games they are watching.
Creating a sense of community: Many online video games are multiplayer and require collaboration and teamwork to succeed. Watching other gamers work together to achieve success as a team can help build community and a sense of belonging, allowing kids to feel like they are part of a larger group of fans.
It’s fun and entertaining: Simply put, watching others play video games is entertaining and engaging, especially if the players are skilled, funny, and have big personalities. Kids enjoy the thrill of watching their favorite gaming YouTubers or Twitch streamers play games they love and succeed in challenging tasks.
As parents of young children, we often receive a stream of cautionary advice about the harms of our kids’ overexposure to too many video games and too much screen time. While the negative aspects of excessive video gaming and screen time have long been documented, ranging from increased social isolation to impaired mental health, a growing body of research is showing heretofore unknown benefits to playing video games, particularly for developing young minds.
In a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers found that children who played video games showed enhanced cognitive performance compared to those who did not play video games. “In contrast to the negative associations with mental health, video gaming has been proposed to enhance cognitive flexibility by providing skills that can be transferred to various cognitive tasks relevant to everyday life.”
Researchers found that video-gaming kids fared better than their non-gaming counterparts in cognitive flexibility, such as certain decision-making skills, as well as better visual and spatial memory. Another recent study by researchers at the University of Houston College of Education examined the video-gaming habits of diverse urban public-school preteen students and concluded no direct linkage between video game playing and diminished cognitive performance.
If you’re concerned about your kid’s video-gaming habits, here are a few considerations:
Moderation is key: Most experts agree that video gaming can be a healthy and enjoyable activity for kids as long as it’s done in moderation. Parents should monitor their kid’s gaming habits and make sure they aren’t trading video gaming time for other important activities such as homework, physical play, and socializing with friends and family.
Establish clear screen time guidelines: The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that children between the ages of 2 and 5 years old should have no more than one hour of screen time per day, while children ages 6 and up should have consistent limits on the amount of time they spend on screens.
Monitor game content: The content of the games that children play can have a significant impact on their development and behavior. Parents should be aware of the content of the games their children are playing and make sure that it is age-appropriate and aligns with their family values.
Consider positive effects of gaming: While there can be potential negative effects of video gaming, such as addiction and exposure to violent content, there also are potential positive effects, such as improved cognitive skills, problem-solving abilities, and social connections with other gamers.
Get involved: Experts agree that parental involvement and monitoring are key to ensuring that video gaming is a healthy and positive activity for children. Parents should talk to their children about their gaming habits, set clear rules and boundaries, and be aware of warning signs of problematic gaming behavior.

Why it made our list: This family movie streaming now blends action and humor perfectly. Nimona also discusses important themes about judgment and acceptance.

Why it made our list: Parents have been reading these wildly popular books to their children since 1997, and it is interesting to see the on-screen adaptation. While the humor can be simple-minded, it guarantees giggles and has a stellar cast including Ed Helms, Kevin Hart, and Jordan Peele.

Why it made our list:Coraline is a formidable female character who realizes that sometimes real life, while not perfect, is far better than fantasy. Even her parents learn important lessons about being engaged and involved in their daughter’s life.

In this 2022 remake of the classic film, Andy Garcia plays the father of the bride who does his best to get through his daughter’s wedding. Gloria Estefan is the mother of the bride in the comedic journey parents go through when their children grow up and get married.
Why it made our list: The film features a tight-knit Cuban-American family and modern ideals surrounding marriage. Positive messages also abound in the latest version of this well-loved film.

A remake of the 1984 David Lynch film, based on the 1965 sci-fi novel by Frank Herbert, Dune tells the story of the noble Atreides family and their battle for control of a valuable resource that holds great potential for humanity.
Why it made our list: The film features an award-winning cast including, Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem, and Josh Brolin. If the cast isn’t reason enough to watch, Dune also won six Oscars.

8-Bit Christmas
It’s Christmas in July! In this family movie streaming on MAX, a father played by Neil Patrick Harris, returns home and relays the story of one amazing childhood Christmas in the late 1980s. All he wanted was a Nintendo entertainment system, and he was willing to do almost anything to get it.
Why it made our list: Parents may enough the nostalgic return to the yesteryear of late 1980-something featured in the film, which includes music and items from the era. Kids will love the camaraderie and comedy between the group of friends who share a love of video games.

The Batman
The latest installment in the Batman film franchise features Batman, played by Robert Pattinson, investigating his own family and corruption in Gotham to catch a serial killer targeting important political figures.
Why it made our list: In addition to Robert Pattinson as the caped crusader, there’s a fantastic cast including Zoë Kravitz, Colin Farrell, John Turturro, and Peter Sarsgaard. The film was nominated for three Oscars and features a diverse representation of characters.

Video game legends Mario Brothers (Mario and Luigi) must travel to an underground labyrinth and battle the villainous Bowser to save Princess Peach. Based on the popular video game, the film stars Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Jack Black.
Why it made our list: The film may appeal to parents who grew up playing the video game the film is based on. With realistic animation and nods to the Nintendo game around every turn, kids and parents will find reasons to watch.

Based on the popular children’s book series by Norman Bridwell, the film adaptation finds Emily Elizabeth navigating life as a middle school kid in New York City. When her mom goes out of town, she stays with her uncle. Emily Elizabeth rescues a red puppy, Clifford, who continues to grow and grow.
Why it made our list: The movie is as sweet and heartwarming as the book series. Emily Elizabeth is kind and gentle toward Clifford, and the film offers positive messages about empathy and teamwork.

Why it made our list: With social and emotional life skills like working together as a team and being responsible as a focus in the film, kids might learn these lessons right along with the furry blue hedgehog. Parents may enjoy Jim Carrey’s outlandish portrayal of the villain, Dr. Robotnik.

This science-fiction sequel returns audiences to Pandora where Jake Sully now lives. When threatened by the RDA, the Na’vi work with Jake and Neytiri to save the home they’ve worked hard to create and maintain.
Why it made our list: The long-awaited sequel took over a decade to make it to the big screen and filled with positive messages about acceptance and peace, this blockbuster lives up to the hype.

Whether searching for a lost relic or fighting off the bad guys, Indiana Jones has been a staple in the action-film genre for four decades. The first film, Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark won four Oscars and was directed by legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg.
Why it made our list: With the fifth in the series, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, coming to theaters this summer, it is a perfect opportunity to either rewatch the former films or to see them for the very first time. Filled with history, adventure, and some of the best action sequences on celluloid, this collection of family movies is a cinematic gem.

Why it made our list: This computer-animated film, though brief, tells the sweet story of a relationship that grows over many years. It’s perfect if you are short on time but want to watch something with the family.
Bravery is not just about plunging down a slide or scaling a climbing wall: it’s about having the courage and confidence to do what’s right, stand up to bullies and naysayers, and be a fearless believer in oneself. These tips on raising a brave kid will help you instill courage and healthy risk-taking in your kids. And maybe even remind them that they shouldn’t apologize when there’s no need to.
1. Make courage part of the conversation. We tell our kids they are brave when they brush themselves off after falling or finish that swim lesson they’ve been dreading. But do we teach them what it all means? Laura Markham, the parenting expert (and a true toddler whisperer, we swear), has a great definition on her site, Aha! Parenting, which is packed with resources for every age and stage. “Courage doesn’t mean not being afraid. In fact, in many situations that might qualify as stupidity. Courage means being afraid and doing the right thing anyway.” Like when we talk about being brave enough to admit to wrongdoing despite fearing the consequences. So get a conversation going with a dinnertime question for all to answer: What did you do today that was brave?
2. Let them express themselves—fearlessly. How wonderful that “you do you” is a saying these days. It’s a great one to give your kids, whether that means they dress themselves for school picture day or they get the haircut they want. These may seem like trivial things, but the more you allow your kids to be who they are (without fear of criticism for it), the more they get to know that incredible feeling of just being themselves. Teacher, life coach and mentor Lindsay Sealey, author of Growing Strong Girls: Practical Tools to Cultivate Connection in the Preteen Years, identifies connection as the foundation of strength and includes being “curious instead of critical” in her four tips for cultivating connection. 3. Recognize risk-taking heroes. After figure skater Adam Rippon courageously told the world exactly who he is, he became the first openly gay male athlete to win an Olympic medal for the U.S. Marie Curie challenged the established science industry and discovered radioactivity. By exposing kids to risk-takers who rock, you can provide admirable role models and expand their understanding of healthy risk-taking (We aren’t talking about any kind of risk that hurts oneself or others.). And it’s never too early to start teaching kids about the heroes and heroines who came before—listen to this two-year-old recites the names of historical African-American leaders.

4. Read books about courage. We read them books about using the potty, preparing for a sibling, and every other major transition of childhood. Courage should also be on their reading list, and a good start is The Adventures of Lily Huckleberryin Scandinavia. “We want Lily’s stories to give children a love for trying new things and teach them that it is ok to take risks—that the best adventures in life often come from being courageous enough to do things that felt a little scary in the first place.” co-author Audrey Smit says. 5. Model bravery. Did you just nail a big presentation at work? It was scary, right? Tell your kids all about it! It’s helpful for them to know about times their parents were scared and followed through anyway. And if you missed the mark, share that story too, so they also learn how to cope and hopefully try again.
6. Question the narratives. When it comes to movies, thankfully, we now have complex and diverse heroines and heroes to show our daughters and sons (thank you, Raya, Moana, and Miguel). But even in 2021, cultural messages abound about what girls should be, and how boys should act. No one knows this better than Jennifer Siebel Newsom, Founder and CEO of The Representation Project and mom of four. Two of her documentaries, Miss Representation and The Mask You Live In should be required watching for parents. Each looks at just how entrenched these gender stereotypes are and how they inhibit things like the courage to be who we are—inspiring all of us to work harder to break free of them.

7. Teach tools to take a stand. It’s hard to make it through childhood without being impacted by bullying—now more than ever with the advent of social media and opportunities for cyberbullying. We weighed in with experts Lauren Paul and Molly Thompson, the co-founders of Kind Campaign, a nonprofit that aims to prevent and treat girl-against-girl bullying with viewings of their documentary, Finding Kind, and nationwide school assemblies that help kids connect, converse, apologize, and pledge kindness. “We will often see this respect and courage strengthen kids’ ability to speak up and act with conviction in other areas of their lives now and in the future,” Paul says. “For any child that is experiencing bullying, our advice to parents is to share their own past experiences with bullying and let their child know that they are not alone in this journey.”
8. Let them try (and fail) and try again. If “I do it!” was your child’s first three-word sentence, then you know exactly what we’re talking about. While you rarely have all the time in the world for your independent kiddo to get into the car seat, tie shoes or spill the open cup (again), summon a little extra patience during these moments and resist the urge to step in and “help.” When they look up and confidently exclaim, “I did it!” they are learning much more than the task at hand—they are building a belief in themselves that will carry over when it is time to make riskier moves, like raising their hands in class or running for office.
9. Play act at overcoming fears. When we do something new, let’s talk about what we’ll do. Try and convince us those Daniel Tiger songs don't still come in handy! Now, there’s also Mightier and its bioresponsive video games that use a heart rate monitor to help kids learn emotional control as they play, leading to greater success at the game. “The same brain circuitry that gets used in the games gets used when you’re facing something scary or hard,” says Dr. Jason Kahn, Mightier’s Chief Scientific Officer. Mightier was developed at Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, so parents can feel good about this screen time and the strategies it can help instill.
10. Remind them you needn't be big to be brave. Whether it’s blowing their minds with the knowledge that an ant can carry 5,000 times its body weight or inspiring them with stories of other kids braving the odds to do amazing things, show them that small is strong and capable. Doing so will also serve as an empathetic reminder to you that the world is big for a little kid. Take that extra moment to look at things from their level as they take those courageous steps that will lead to—and reveal—their best selves.

A mockumentary that lives somewhere between Wet Hot American Summer and Waiting for Guffman, Theater Camp deserves its round of applause.

Yes, bankable action star Jason Statham will be the man taking on the beast, but perhaps the most interesting bit of news is the thriller’s director—Ben Wheatley, the convention-defying helmer behind indie gems Kill List, Sightseers, and High-Rise.

Another day, another story about a useless man who thinks his wife is automatically his personal chef, maid, secretary, and handler. In today’s edition, we’re heading to the always hilarious-yet-rage-inducing “Am I the A**hole” subreddit, where a woman is asking the internet to weigh in on her fight with her mother-in-law over whose job it is to remember family birthdays.
“My MIL’s birthday was about two months ago. They live on the other side of the country, so it would typically mean a phone call and maybe a birthday card. Well, I guess my husband forgot about it and didn’t call her or send her a card,” she writes. “I found this out because she called and was disappointed that she didn’t hear anything from us. I told her that my husband probably should have put her birthday in his calendar and set a reminder, and that he never does.”
She continues, “She asked me why I didn’t keep track of this stuff for him, because ‘he’s a guy, they don’t care about that stuff.’ She mentioned he’d skipped his sister’s birthday and niece’s and nephew’s birthdays too, and that I should start trying to remind him. And then she said ‘And don’t forget Mother’s Day, either.'”
“She got annoyed and told me that like it or not, it’s kind of ‘my job’ to keep track of this stuff, because again, guys don’t care,” she says. “I said ‘Well, if he doesn’t care, he doesn’t care. I’m not his mom.'”
To no one’s surprise, husband took his mom’s side.
“He said that we’re a team and that he’s obviously not good at this, so I should step up,” she writes. “I asked him what the release date for a video game he’d been talking about was. He said the exact date. I just looked at him for a minute, and he got pretty defensive and said ‘That’s totally different.'”
Right.
So the wife came up with a great solution: she and her husband would start a shared family calendar with important dates like birthdays entered in, with reminders. That makes sense, right? Except, of course, husband couldn’t be bothered to pull his weight, once again.
“I started the calendar, entered in my dates, and it has been sitting there, unused for the past two months. What happened? He missed another birthday, and the whole thing started again,” the rightfully frustrated wife writes.
So amid this ridiculous war with her husband’s family, she’s asking the internet if she’s the a**hole in the situation. The internet, thankfully, sees reason, and the response is overwhelming: she is not. Obviously.
“I hate this stuff, the mental work load that is automatically assigned to women. You’re his wife, not his secretary. Also nice move with the video game date. A wonderful comeback would have been ‘Oh you’re right, it is different, you actually care about the game,'” one commenter wrote.
Another weighed in, “Send him back to his mother so she can finish raising him.”
This scenario is all-too-common—research shows that in heterosexual marriages, it is virtually always women who do more child-raising, housework, and mental and emotional labor, even when both parents work full-time jobs. And husbands (and MILs) like this one are only perpetuating that problem.

Circle members also receive a bonus once in a while, so be sure to search the app before you hit the aisles.
Hit the Dollar Spot. Bullseye's playground can be a treasure trove of bargain items, especially when needing goody bag items, stocking stuffers, or Easter basket fillers.
Pick the best day to shop. According to RetailMeNot, Target pushes out clearance items in each department on specific days, so the day you shop can impact your savings. These are the days rumored to be the best clearance prices for each item: Mon.: electronics, accessories, kids' clothing, books, baby items; Tues.: women's clothing, pets, food; Wed.: men's clothing, health, and beauty, diapers, lawn, and garden, furniture; Thu.: housewares, lingerie, shoes, toys, sporting goods, luggage, decor; Fri.: auto, cosmetics, hardware, jewelry.
Check the weekly ad. Like the classic coupon section of the newspaper, Target still offers a weekly ad. You can even sign up to have savings emailed to you.
Check the Promotions. Target lists all their promotions, from Buy One Get One to Free Gift with Purchase on their website, so check it before you go.
Shop during Deal Days. They pop up right around Amazon Prime Day, so be on the lookout to save up to 50% on items like electronics, home items, clothing, and more.
You can also sign up for Target's RedCard to earn 5% cash back. If you don't feel like getting another credit card, Target also offers a debit card that links to your existing checking account and offers the same benefits.
Stack your coupons. Target allows you to combine store coupons with manufacturer's coupons, Cartwheel offers, and RedCard discounts so you can save four ways at the same time.
If the store is out of stock on a sale item, simply ask for a raincheck. Target will generally guarantee any sale price, other than clearance items and limited-edition lines.
Don't miss the aisle endcaps or the back of the store. You'll often spot Target's red sticker clearance items that can score you up to 70% off on certain items.
Set up a registry. You'll get 15% off any items on your registry that aren't purchased, so even if you think you're not going to be gifted something add it anyway.
You can never manage to make it out of Target with just what you came for, so if you really want to save money your best bet is to skip the store altogether and order online. Target also offers same-day drive-up service at over 1,250 stores so you can just pull up, get your items and go. Don't forget that you can shop for clearance items online as well.

It's not often you can save money on gift cards, but Costco is one of the best places to score a deal on buying what is essentially money. You can score big discounts on gift cards, like $100 worth of Build-A-Bear credit for $80. This comes in handy over the holidays or for end-of-the-school-year gifts.
If you're looking to save money on prescriptions, then head to the Costco pharmacy where you can earn deep discounts even without insurance coverage.
